The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The applications of molecular detection using nested PCR and the routine microscopic examination of ehrlichiosis were applied to 43 clinically affected dogs residing in Bangkok and Samutraprakarn. This study, performed in 2005-2006, has determined that 79.5% (31/39) of the buffy coat smears were having the ehrlichial morulae plus initial bodies found in monocytes and lymphocytes. The nested PCR was used to confirm the occurrence of ehrlichiosis after tested by morulae identification. Both tests demonstrated that neither Ehrlichia chaffeensis nor E. ewingii, the zoonotic agents of human, were found in this area. However, the prevalence of E. canis alone detected by …

Tube Realignment For Patellar Luxation Repair In Dogs, Chalika Wangdee, Marissak Kalpravidh
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Grade II patellar luxations in dogs were repaired by trochlear wedge recession in 5 stifles (group 1) and by proximal tube realignment in 5 stifles (group 2). A combination of the two techniques was used to correct grade II luxation in 10 stifles (group 3) and grade III luxation in 5 stifles (group 4). The position of the patella, weight bearing, and animal gait were postoperatively examined for 12 weeks. Satisfactory results were observed in 1(20%), 3(60%), and 9(90%) stifles with grade II luxation in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Good recovery from grade III luxation was observed in …

An immunohistochemical study describes the localization of IgM containing cells involved in the primary immune organs of tilapia and the fate of E. tarda antigen distributed in the tissues during a course of intraperitoneal challenge. The E. tarda antigen was diffusely detected in various organs except the brain and spinal cord. The positive signals were identified within various cell types, including phagocytic cells, serosal mesothelia, myocardia, intestinal and gill epithelia and glomerular capillary endothelia. No extracellular deposition of bacterial antigen was observed. The bacterial antigen can persist up to 1 month in the granuloma and melano-macrophage center, confirming the intracellular …

The present study was conducted to synchronize estrus and fixed time insemination in dairy cattle during the hot and humid months (July to November) in Thailand. Thirty-four cows and heifers were treated by using norgestomet+PGF2α+equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) program. Norgestomet was implanted subcutaneously at the back of the ear for 10 days. PGF2α was administered IM on day 8 and one injection of eCG was given on the day of implant removal. Fixed time artificial insemination(AI) were performed twice, at about 54-60 and 70-74 h, after the eCG injection. Blood samples were collected at 22 days after AI for progesterone …

The amount of new information of the last seven years regarding Lawsonia intracellularis sensitivity to antimicrobial drugs, prevention/control based on treatment and vaccination, diagnosis and, finally, genome is amazing. Nevertheless, not much is known about the epidemiology of the disease, mainly regarding the source of infection, resistance of the bacteria in the environment and possible biological vectors that could spread the infection among farms. It was learned that as few as 1,000 to 10,000 bacteria are enough to induce infection and fecal shedding two to three weeks after inoculating susceptible pigs. The samples from the infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus and uterotubal junction (UTJ) of the Thai swamp buffalo oviduct were taken immediately after slaughter at the local abattoir. The histological changes of the epithelium including general characteristics, intensity of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining, cell height and immune cell distribution were investigated by light microscopy. The degree of the histological and morphometric changes was shown to be high in the ampulla and infundibulum compared with that of the isthmus and UTJ at both follicular and luteal phases of the estrous cycle. The experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of supplementing a commercially available probiotic (an Active Elements®; AE) containing Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, an antibiotic; Chlortetracycline (CTC), and the probiotic plus antibiotic, via the drinking water on broiler production performance, mortality rate and the antibiotic residue in meat. Four hundred one-day-old male Cobb broiler chicks were randomly allocated to 4 treatments; a non-treated control, a 0.05% CTC, a 1:500 AE, and a combination of CTC and AE. The safety of permethrin at a prophylactic dose for ectoparasite infection in dogs was evaluated by the measurement of cholinesterase activity (ChE). On day 0, eight healthy dogs were exposed to spot - on formulation of permethrin. The results of serum ChE activity in all the dogs which measured on day 1 and 4 after exposure to permethrin showed no significant different comparing to those before exposure. There were no clinical signs in all dogs throughout the experiment. The result suggests that using spot-on formulation of permethrin at a prophylactic dose for ectoparasite infection is safe in dogs.

The genus Mycobacterium is of utmost importance in veterinary medicine. Members of the genus cause serious diseases to livestock and they also could be transmitted to humans. Bovine tuberculosis, principally caused by M. bovis, is a widespread disease and causes serious economic losses to farmers worldwide. Paratuberculosis or Johne’s disease caused by the M. avium complex, is a slow-developing disease present in several species, particularly cattle, and it has been associated with Chrone’s disease of humans. The aim of this research was to preliminarily investigate the potential of earthworms to reduce clogging by introducing into the lab-scale wetland-like reactors receiving high strength wastewater, which were swine wastewater in Thailand, and domestic wastewater in Germany. The preliminary results indicated that every unit with earthworms had no sign of clogging regardless of the type of wastewater, whereas clogging was the case in the units without earthworms receiving swine wastewater. Both studies reflected similarity, which exhibited little treatment in every microcosm. It could be implied that earthworms could thrive within the wetland body due to the survival rate of …

Polymorphism of microsatellite DNA in Thai domestic elephants (Elephas maximus) was studied using five genetic markers including LaT05, LaT07, LaT16, LaT17 and LaT26, in order to determine the efficiency of such markers in parentage identification. Eleven elephants from 5 families and 10 unrelated ones located in the northern, northeastern and central parts of Thailand were tested. It was found that LaT05, LaT16, LaT17 and LaT26 possessed marker sizes of 250-500 bp with numbers of alleles ranging from 4-13, heterozygosity 0.62-0.88 and PIC 0.56-0.87 whereas LaT07 could not be detected in all specimens used. While the use of frozen-thawed semen has been hampered by poor cryopreservability of equine sperm, the technique of choice in equine practice remains artificial insemination (AI) using cold storage semen. This study examined the effect of cold storage on semen quality and pregnancy rate after AI. In experiment I, ejaculates were collected from 3 stallions of proven fertility and then diluted to a final concentration of 25-50 x 106 sperm/ml. The withdrawal of antibiotic growth promoters is likely to increase the incidence of enteric disease in pig and broiler farms; especially in poorly sanitised conditions.
