The vasovagal tonus index (VVTI) is a time-domain analysis method of heart rate variability acquired over a short period. It is a useful measurement for evaluating severity and prognosis heart failure in dogs. Behavior responses can be used to evaluate stress in each dog individually. Stress during clinical examination may interfere with the VVTI since it influences the sympathetic nervous system. Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is an ornamental fish. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of diet supplemented with anthocyanin from roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) on survival, growth, and chromatophores identification in skin of goldfish (C. auratus). Three experimental diets were prepared from commercial feed for tilapia added with 40, 80 or 160 mg of pigment from roselle/kg. Survival and biometric parameters such a growth, weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio were evaluated. Histological analyses from some tissues were made. Causes Of Relinquishing The Dogs Adopted From Animal Shelters In Taiwan, Ying-Bin Fuh, Meng-Chih Tung, Kwong-Chung Tung, Jeng-Tung Chiang, Chang-Young Fei

This study investigated the causes of relinquishing the dogs adopted from animal shelters. The subjects were the adopters of public animal shelters in Taiwan in 2003~2005. Random sampling was conducted upon 10% of the population. This study collected data by telephone survey, and 1,185 calls were made, with 626 valid samples. According to this investigation, when being adopted, most of the animals were below one year old (71.7%; 449/626); among 626 dogs investigated, 229 were relinquished (36.6%; 229/626). They were mostly relinquished within half year after the adoption (45.4%; 104/229). The main cause of abandonment is “behavior” (31.9%; 73/229); “barking” …

Three female mongrel dogs were cytologically diagnosed as transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) and had clinically developed resistance to vincristine treatment. One dog was treated with four treatments of 10,000 IU/m2 body surface area of L-asparaginase combined with 0.025 mg/kg body weight of vincristine sulfate every two weeks while this combination was administered to the others once a week for four weeks and only vincristine sulfate once a week for four treatments. Both treatments resulted in a complete remission. Side effects such as gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, depression, and decrease in appetite were observed in the dogs administered with the later protocol. …

Bats are the reservoir hosts for several Paramyxoviruses including two serious zoonotic viruses, Hendra virus and Nipah virus which are responsible for fatal infections in animals and humans. These two viruses are sufficiently different from previously described Paramyxoviruses and are included in a new genus, Henipavirus. We report here a survey of cave-dwelling, insectivorous bats in Thailand for the presence of henipaviruses. Pooled urine samples were collected in nine caves inhabited by six different bat species in the northern (Chiangmai and Nakornsawan) and southern (Songkla and Satoon) provinces of Thailand. The objective of this study is to establish a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) laboratory for detection of multidrug resistance1 (MDR1) mutation in Thailand. Blood samples were collected from 67 dogs, namely 16 Collies, 9 Shetland Sheepdogs, 5 Border Collies, 6 Shih tzus, 13 German Shepherds and 18 mixed breeds. Genomic DNA was extracted and PCR was performed to amplify 341 and 577 bp fragments to detect homozygous wild-type (+/+) and homozygous mutant (-/-), respectively. Mosquito distribution and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection were studied in a bat cave and its surrounding area in Lopburi province, central Thailand. Mosquitoes were collected from May 2009 to April 2010 by using CO2-baited CDC-light traps, and dry ice as a source of CO2 to attract mosquitoes. Mosquitoes were identified and tested for JEV infection by using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). This study was designed to investigate the pathogenesis of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), a new variantgenotype and QX-like IBV, isolated in Thailand. Sixty, 28-day-old, female broiler chickens were divided into 3 groupsof 20 chickens each (groups 1-3) and sixty, 1-day-old, female broiler chickens were divided into 3 groups of 20chickens each (groups 4-6). Time of the first cleavage has been used as an indicator to determine developmental rate and quality of embryos in many species. The aim of this study was to examine effect of time of the first cleavage on cat embryo development and blastocyst quality. After in vitro fertilization, embryos were observed twice at 27 and 42 hours. The seroprevalence of Leptospira interrogans serovars in cattle was determined by analyzing 385 serum samples from 8 Rural Development Districts (RDD), in Tamaulipas, Mexico. A microscopic agglutination test (MAT) including 9 serovars of L. interrogans as antigens was used. Serum samples were considered positive when 50% or more of agglutination in a dilution of ≥ l:100 was observed. A total of 70.4% animals were reported positive for one or more serovars. The most frequent antibodies reported were those against serovars tarassovi (53.25%) hardjo (23.64%) and canicola (15.32%), whilst serovar bataviae (0.52%) was found at lower frequency. The present study was designed to evaluate the protection induced by different vaccination programs against Thai QX-like infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). The chickens were divided into 5 groups, 16 chickens in each. Groups 1-4 were vaccinated with different regimes of vaccination program against IBV. Groups 5 did not receive IBV vaccine and served as a positive control group. In this study the reproductive and dairy performances of swamp buffaloes under intensive farm conditions were evaluated. The data of reproduction and milk production were collected from forty-eight swamp buffaloes during the period of 2001 to 2010. The reproductive and dairy performances were analyzed as mean±SD of each index. The age at first calving was 47.1±8 months and the gestation period was 321.4±11.3 days. The service per conception was 3.5±2.5, with insemination by both natural and artificial mating. The calving interval and the days open were 486.2±75.02 and 166.2±69.7 days (n=99), respectively. Growth and survival of juvenile brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus) in a closed recirculation seawater system at two salinities (33 and 38‰) were evaluated during 4 weeks in experimental tanks. Although the specific growth rate (SGR) was slightly higher at the treatment of 38‰ than at 33‰, no significant differences were detected for the different time intervals analyzed; however, the growth in terms of both body weight and total length was significantly faster at 38‰. In general, artificial insemination (AI) in sheep using frozen-thawed (FT) semen in commercial scale islimited due to the fact that the FT semen of sheep needs to be deposited into the uterus to achieve an acceptablefertility rate. The objective of this study was to characterize the patterns of ovarian follicular waves, and FSH and P4concentration during estrous cycle in Thai native cattle (Bos indicus). Transrectal ultrasound examination of ovarieswas performed daily using a 7.5 MHz transducer and blood samples were collected after the ultrasound examinationduring May to August, 2010. There were 1-, 2- or 3-follicular waves per cycle in heifers, and 1-, 2-, 3- or 4-follicularwaves per cycle in cows. Moreover, in cows, only one cycle exhibited 4-follicular wave pattern. The objectives of this study were to describe (1) the form of body surface potentials for P, QRS and ST-Tcomponents using semiorthogonal ECG leads and vectorcardiograms (VCGs), (2) the instability of the QT usingcoefficient of variation compared with 3 other published methods, and (3) the frequency-domain characteristics of theQRS complex. The aims of this study were to optimize semen collection by electroejaculation and characterize ejaculatecharacteristics in Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus). Eight adult males (4-20 years of age) were anesthetized using acombination of medetomidine HCl (0.012-0.018 mg/kg), butorphanol tartrate (0.012-0.018 mg/kg),and ketamine HCl(5-7 mg/kg) administered intramuscularly via a dart and subjected to electroejaculation. Ejaculates (milky-white toyellowish color) were successfully collected from all males. Averages (Mean±SD) of the seminal traits (volume, pH,osmolality, sperm concentration, total sperm motility, and viability) were 10.3±9.4 ml, 7.4±3.4, 278.6±13.3 mOsm,206.2±185.4x106 spermatozoa/ml , 24±15.4%, and 35.1±6.5%, respectively. The purpose of this study was to report on the incidence of patellar luxation in 128 dogs out of a total of 317dogs (40.3%) treated at orthopedic clinics in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from October 2006 through May 2011. Patellarluxation was most frequently found in small breeds, among which Poodles were the most commonly affected (34.3%).Most luxations were medial (89%), and 57.8% of affected dogs were female. Uniluxation of the patella was found in63%, and biluxation in 37%. Most dogs were classified as patellar luxation grade III. This study was divided into two experiments. For the first experiment, heart rates during exercise of 21healthy male dogs were recorded. The animals were brought to swim every 2 days, 8 times in all, for 10 minutes.Heart rates were measured every minute using a pulse watch. For the second experiment, 134 healthy adult dogswere categorized into three groups: small (41), medium (51) and large breed (42). Their heart rates were measuredevery minute for 34 minutes after the 5th swimming. In the first experiment, the heart rates during the 1st–4thswimming were significantly higher (p<0.05) than during the 5th 8th swimming. In the second experiment, the heartrates were significantly different (p<0.05) between small, medium and large dogs. No correlations were foundbetween weight, age, and heart rate. From the results of the second experiment, we were able to formulate anequation for predictable heart rate of each group of dogs (small, medium and large dogs). From the results, werecommend that the limits on the length of time spent for aquatic exercise should be 15–30 minutes, depending on thebreed (size) of dog. Moreover, there should be trainers observing each dog to prevent over-exercise.

The aim of this study was to investigate the long term effect of dietary fiber, Ocimum canum and psylliumseed, on body weight and lipid level in blood of high cholesterol-diet fed rats. A total of 36 rats were divided into 3groups. There were 6-male and 6-female rats in each group. The control group (CTR) received the standard dietadded with 2.5% cholesterol of dry feed (HCD). Fifty isolates of Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) isolated from chickens during 2007-2010 were invitro tested to 21 antimicrobial discs. The highest sensitivity of APEC was to fosfomycin (84%). The second sensitivityagainst enrofloxacin and norfloxacin was 70%. The antimicrobial sensitivity to colistin, gentamicin, kanamycin,sulfametroxazole+trimethoprim, amoxicillin+clavulanic acid and doxycycline were 66, 64, 62, 60, 58 and 52%,respectively. The antimicrobial resistance of APEC to tylosin, tilmicosin, tiamulin, lincomycin, amoxicillin, ampicillin,erythromycin, cephalexin and neomycin were 100, 100, 100, 94, 86, 82, 80, 72 and 62%, respectively.

The toxicity of Kameng (Eclipta prostrate Linn.) and Kradhuawean (Spilanthes acmella (Linn.) Murr.) onzebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos was investigated. An aqueous crude extract of the leaves of each plant was tested withnewly spawned embryos in 96 well plates. The observed effect was based on the toxicity endpoint composed of lethal,sublethal and malformation effects appearing at 24, 48 and 144 hours post-fertilization (hpf). Fifty Aeromonas hydrophila isolates from farmed Nile Tilapia were characterized for expression of AheABCmultidrug efflux system and plasmid profile. Thirty nine isolates (78%) expressed AheABC with production of 1.7 to221.3 folds more than AheB of A. hydrophila ATCC35654, the reference. This suggests that the AheABC efflux systemis not always constitutively expressed in the A. hydrophila clinical isolates. The isolates with less AheB expressionwere more resistant to antibiotics than those with high AheB expression.
