We demonstrated the using of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) of ribosomal DNA as a tool for identification of medically and veterinary important Muscidae flies in Thailand. A total of 27 fly samples were collected from various regions of Thailand. Six fly species in three subfamilies including Azeliinae (Hydrotaea spinigera), Muscinae (Musca domestica, M. sorbens) and Stomoxyinae (Stomoxys calcitrans, S. indicus and S. sitiens) were identified base on morphological taxonomy. PCR amplicons of the ITS2 gene of these flies varied between 312-377 bp with A+T content of 76.6%. ITS2 sequences of the flies in this study were 93-100% identity to …

This study was conducted to investigate Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection in mammal and avian byusing mice and baby chickens as model animals. Thailand 2010 and Ross/186 strain (reference strain) were used inthis study. 104, 106 and 108 CID50 of CHIKV were inoculated to four- and six-week-old mice. Warm-water streptococcosis outbreaks in Thai cultured tilapia are caused by Streptococcus iniae and S.agalactiae. However, distinguishing between these two species of streptococcus are very difficult due to their similarmicrobiological appearance and clinical signs of infected fish. In this study, we proposed a new duplex-PCR basedmethod for simultaneous detection of these pathogens. The duplex-PCR amplified partial lctO and 16s rRNA gene ofS. iniae and S. agalactiae at 870 bp and 220 bp, respectively. A seroepidemiological survey was carried out to investigate seroprevalence of Neospora caninum in swamp buffaloes from five provinces in north-eastern Thailand, and to compare infection status in swamp buffaloes and beef cattle at one area of Thailand. A single serum sample was collected from each of 532 swamp buffaloes and 78 beef cattle during January and July 2009. Antibodies against N. caninum were analyzed by a commercial ELISA test. Chisquare tests were used to compare the seroprevalence between species, gender and age groups in Khon Kaen. The present study was performed to find the therapeutic effects of 2 mg/kg prednisolone orally fed twice a day in cats with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). Six IMHA positive cats were diagnosed with Coomb’s test. Mean age of IMHA cats was 4.4 years old. They were considered as having secondary IMHA. The mortality rate of IMHA cats received prednisolone treatment was 33.3%. Complete blood count and blood chemistry values were all within the normal limit.

Early Selection According To Repeatability Of Body Measurements Of Turkish Arabian Foals, Süleyman Çilek

In this study, body measurements of Turkish Arabian foals at different ages was obtained from Anadolustate farm in Turkey which included body length, cannon bone circumference, heart girth and withers heightmeasurements. Effects of sex, birth month, birth year and age of foal at different growth periods on withers height,body length, heart girth and cannon bone circumference were significant (p<0.05). Effects of environmental factors onall body measurements were standardized additively. Using intra-class correlation method, repeatability was 0.55 forwither height, 0.47 for heart girth, 0.26 for cannon bone circumference for forelimb and 0.31 for body length.According to moderate level results of repeatability for especially heart girth and wither height measurements,selection of Turkish Arabian foals may be conducted at an early age according to body measurements at 6 months ofage.

Data of purebred Landrace, Large White and their crossbreds taken from a commercial swine farm locatedin the north-eastern part of Thailand were used to evaluate the genetic associations of stillbirth with the total numberof piglets born and gestation length. The analyses were base on 28,275 litters born from 2002 to 2006. Analysis wascarried out with a multivariate animal model using average information REML procedures. Heritability estimates forstillbirth, the total number of piglets born and gestation length were 0.03±0.01, 0.03±0.01 and 0.16±0.01, respectively.The genetic correlation between the total number of piglets born and stillbirth was positive. The purpose of this study is to detect Babesia canis by using 18S rDNA amplification in order to confirm thepresence of the agents and to characterize molecularly the Thai B. canis. Three sets of primers, a Babesia canis-specificprimer (BcSP), Piroplasm-specific primer (PSP) and Babesia species-specific primer (BsSP), were tested for sensitivity.The results showed that BcSP and PSP were 50 times more sensitive than BsSP. Both BcSP and PSP were specificenough to detect this parasite in asymptomatic dogs. This study aimed to determine seasonal dengue infection rates in Ae. aegypti mosquitoes and dengueinfection in suspected patients in 4 central provinces of Thailand. Ae. aegypti mosquitoes collected during threeseasons and blood specimens taken from patients with suspected dengue were detected and serotyped for dengueviruses using RT-PCR. The biting behavior of Ae. aegypti females was studied by 24-hour mosquitoes collection once amonth using human bait for determination of seasonal biting rate. A total of 310 fecal samples of yellow cattle were collected in Taiwan and its offshore islands Penghu andKinmen for gastrointestinal parasite examination using coprological techniques. The overall prevalence was 73.2%.The infection rates of protozoa, nematodes, trematodes, and cestodes were 57.7%, 37.7%, 17.1%, and 0.6%,respectively. Among all parasites, Cryptosporidium spp. (41.6%) were the most predominant, followed by strongyles(36.1%) and Eimeria spp. (11.9%). There were significant differences in the prevalence of protozoa and nematodesbetween different distributional area groups. The present study demonstrates that gastrointestinal parasiticinfections, particularly protozoan infections, occur frequently in yellow cattle in Taiwan and its offshore islands. Matrix metalloproteinases are a family of calcium-dependent and zinc-dependent endopeptidases, which excrete from many cell types. These enzymes can hydrolyze extracellular matrix proteins. The most important inhibitor of MMPs is tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). The imbalance between MMPs and TIMPs causes pathological condition in human and animals. This cross-sectional study was introduced to determine the risk factors of subclinical mastitis in dairy farms. Sixteen small holder farms and 285 milking cows in Khon Kaen province were selected for the study. The mastitis investigation, feeding information and clinical inspection were applied in the farm visits. Milk samples from each quarter with a CMT score of 3 and bulk milk were collected for bacterial identification and somatic cell counts. The purpose of the present study was to investigate theinfluence of intracellular glutamine status on amino acid uptake activity in placental choriocarcinoma (BeWo) cells,analogous to normal placental trophoblasts. Plasmid Profiles Of Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia Coli From Clinically Healthy Swine, Khin Khin Lay, Nisit Chansong, Rungtip Chuanchuen

A total of 145 Escherichia coli isolates originated from clinically-healthy pigs were analyzed for plasmidprofiles. All but one isolate (n=144) carried one to nine plasmids with size ranging from 0.7-16.2 Mda. Fifty-sixplasmid profiles were defined based on sizes and numbers of plasmids in each strain, of which the most commonpatterns were 15.8, 4, 3.3, 1.7, 1.3 Mda and 16.2, 15.8, 4, 3.3, 2.3, 1.7, 1.3, 1, 0.7 Mda. The results indicate widedistribution of plasmids among the commensal E. coli isolates originated from clinically-healthy pigs.

Although neosporosis has long been detected in several wildlife species from different parts of the world,until now there has been no report of Neospora caninum infection in elephants in any country of the world. Serumsamples of 115 captive elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) from the westernmost province of Kanchanaburi, Thailandwere investigated for antibodies to N. caninum and Toxoplasma gondii. Antibodies of N. caninum were detected by thecompetitive ELISA (cELISA) test and T.gondii by the Latex agglutination (LAT) test. Streptococcal infection is a major problem in intensive tilapia farming. This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial activity of mucilage, distilled water- and 70% methanol-crude extract from Butea superba Roxb. against Streptococcal bacteria. The antimicrobial activity using disc diffusion assay showed that B. superba Roxb. had a broad antimicrobial range against twelve isolates of streptococcal bacteria: Streptococcus iniae (n=2) and Streptococcus agalactiae (n=10). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the 70% methanol-crude extract varied between 128 and 512 µg/ml depending on the tested streptococcal strains. This present study was carried out to use conventional and real-time PCR for detection and segregation of Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis in aborted bovine, ovine, caprine, buffalo and camel fetuses. All samples were collected and immediately transferred to laboratory, genomic DNA was extracted and the conventional and real-time PCR by specific primers for Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis was performed. A TaqMan analysis and single-step PCR was carried out in total 3710 DNA of abomasal contents of aborted fetuses. The objective of the present investigation was to ascertain the prevalence of antibiotic resistance amongst E. coli strains obtained from broiler chicken in two different poultry farms against antibiotics that have a limited or no use in poultry and to advocate a probable mechanism of antibiotic resistance transfer between strains. A high resistance rate was seen against azteronam (100%), streptomycin (88-92%) followed by amoxicillin (68-76%), ceftrioxone (60-68%) and cefepime (56-68%). However reasonably lower levels of resistance were seen towards coamoxiclave (40%), ciprofloxacin (24-28%), and ofloxacin (36-40%). Meropenem emerged as least resistant (16-28%) antimicrobial agent.
