In recent years there has been an increase in the number of outbreaks of human listeriosis and contaminated foods have been considered to be a potential source of infection. In this study, a total of 100 minced beef samples were obtained from different butchers and supermarkets in Ankara and examined for the presence and degree of contamination with Listeria species. The minced beef samples were collected in aseptic conditions and transported to the laboratory in cold storage. Determination Of Cyanide Levels In Sorghum Halepense At Different Vegetation Stages In The Aydın Area, Mustafa Sari, Ferda Akar, Fatma Karataş
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, HCN levels in 150 Sorghum halepense samples obtained from the province of Aydın during 3 different vegetation periods were determined. The analysis was carried out using spectrophotometry. According to the results of the analysis, average HCN levels during the tiller, flowering, and postflowering stages in Sorghum halepense leaves, were 460.8, 144.8, and 44.22 ppm respectively. It was concluded that HCN levels in Sorghum halepense growing in the province of Aydın would be toxic for herbivores during the tillers and flowering stages.

The aim of this project was characterization of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against O 1 Man. 69, a vaccine strain of the Ankara Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Institute and detection of the antigenic variation in field virus strains. For that purpose,17 MAbs were used. Activities of MAbs against 146S, enzyme treated 146S (146S-T) and 12S antigenic particles of O 1 Man. 69 virus strain were estimated by indirect ELISA. We studied a group of 59 cases with renal amyloidosis. Mean age (45 male, 14 female) was 33.05±13.04 years. All of the cases had secondary amyloidosis. The causes of secondary amyloidosis were as follows: familial mediterranean fever (FMF) 18(30.5%), pulmonary tuberculosis 12(20.33%), chronic osteomyelitis 8(13.55), bronchiectasia 9(15.25%) rheumatic diseases 4(6.4%), Castleman's disease 1(1.6%), unknown etiology 7(11.86%) Hypertension was detected in 15.3% of the cases. In patients with less than 20 ml/min creatinine clearance (Ccr) hypertension was 20%. This study was conducted to evaluate the breast skin collagen content and electrophoretic analyses of type I collagen in heterozygous naked neck and normally feathered commercial chicks. A total of 72 birds from each genotype were randomly selected at 7 weeks and slaughtered. Breast skin was separated from each carcass and was analysed for collagen content and gel electrophopresis of type I collagen was performed. Males had significantly higher level of skin collagen content than females in both genotypes. This study was conducted to determine the effects of some different antibacterial drugs used in the poultry industry for their effects on the immune system of poultry. This experiment was carried on a hundred and fifty Ross PM-3 type, daily broiler chicks. Oxytetracycline and amoxicillin used in treatment of drinking water, and zinc bacitracin and salinomycin capable of being continuously added to feed in anabolic and preservative concentrations were chosen as antibacterial drug samples. The effect of glazing with the solutions contained ascorbic acid (AA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), BHT/BHA combination and only water, and storage time on lipid oxidation of chub mackerel were determined during frozen storage at -18°C for 10 months. Glazing with some antioxidants or water of the fish retarded lipid oxidation when compared to control samples during frozen storage. The results of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), peroxide value (PV) and free fatty acids (FFA) as lipid oxidation parameters increased slowly in all the samples glazed with antioxidants as a function of time but they retarded lipid oxidation …

The mandibles of thirty-five German shepherd dogs without skeletal disorders were measured morphometrically. The length and the angle of the mandibles were measured and the correlation was determined between the female and male dogs. Mandible measurements increased with the age of the animals. In males, the value of the 1A and 2A angle was not statistically significant when considering age. In females, a decrease in the 1A and 5A angles was determined while no statistically significant value was determined in 2A, 3A and 4A with age. Endothelin-1 levels in normal and preeclamptic pregnant women were determined serially to investigate the correlation between renal function tests and the severity markers of preeclampsia. Plasma endothelin-1 levels were determined in 45 serial plasma samples from 15 pregnant women who subsequently developed preeclampsia, and in 43 plasma samples from 25 women with uncomplicated pregnancies retrospectively. Renal function tests, complete blood counts, urinalysis and blood pressure measurements were performed during antenatal follow-ups of these patients. Migraine is considered to be a functional neurological disorder. For several years cerebral blood flow studies have been fueling the controversy surrounding the pathophysiology of migraine headache. Tc 99m-HM PAO SPECT brain imaging was performed during the headache-free period of 29 migraine sufferers (24 without aura, 5 with aura). The findings were compared with those of an age-and sex-matched control group of 17 people. The SPECT images revealed clear interhemispheric asymmetry in the right frontal, temporal and occipital lobes of the brain in the study group. Slight hypoperfusion was observed in patients who had interictal EEG abnormalities.

Urinary-tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infectious diseases in children; however, the significance of combined infection in the pathogenesis of UTI remains uncertain. Of 48,382 patients discharged from Texas Children's Hospital from July 1, 1991, to June 30, 1994, 1,221 (2.5%) were discharged with a diagnosis of UTI. We retrospectively reviewed the files of these 1,221 patients to assess for concomitant infections and causative microorganisms in patients with first-time UTI, no urologic abnormalities, and no other major diagnoses. Pheochromocytoma is known as chromaffin cell tumor frequently originated from adrenal medulla and results in hypersecretion of catecholamines (1). Typical clinical findings include headache, palpitation, excessive sweating and paroxysmal hypertension, which persistently maintains in 60% of the cases. Generally, paroxysm or attacks are often, but they can appear with intervals of weeks or months (1, 2). Semi-thin and thin sections were used to observe the morphogenesis of peripheral nerves regenerating in silicone tubes. The progress of peripheral nerve regeneration across a 10 mm gap within the silicone tubes was examined after 3, 6 and 9 months. The left sciatic nerves of rats were transected. The proximal and distal nerve stumps were inserted into a silicone tube, in which they were separeted by a 10 mm gap. A tissue cable formed inside the silicone tube with regenerated axons. The effects of Rumex patientia and Urtica dioica on levels of blood glucose, plasma amino acids and other parameters, urine excreta, and liver and kidney histology were examined in diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin. Streptozotocin increased blood glucose and changed the levels of amino acids and other parameters, and caused degenerative changes in the liver and kidney. Rumex patientia had some protective effect on these parameters changed by streptozotocin, while Urtica diocia had no protective effects.

The histochemical localization of thymosin \beta_4 was investigated for the first time in several bovine tissues, using the indirect immunofluorescent technique and the newly applied alkaline phosphatase anti-alkaline phosphatase (APAAP) antibody method. A polyclonal antiserum raised against the N-terminal fragment (1-14) of thymosin \beta_4, showing less than 0.1% crossreactivity with the second b-thymosin in calf tissues, thymosin \beta_9, was used. Positive reaction for thymosin \beta_4 was observed in the cytoplasm of all tissues studied, i.e., bovine spleen, thymus, lung, liver, kidney, lymph nodes and cardiac muscle. This study was planned to compare recurrence of goiters after thyroidectomy in patients who received prophylactic levothyroxine and patients who received no therapy. One hundred and twenty-six patients had been treated by bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy in the General Surgery Clinic of Karadeniz Technical University from 1987 to 1992. Eithy-eight of these patients were included in this study while the remaining patients were excluded as they were non contactable. They were divided into two groups. For most infectious diseases, increased formation of reactive oxygen species is secondary to the primary disease process. Some microorganisms are highly susceptible to exogenous reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) remove H 2 O 2 , and selenium is requird for the activity of GSH-Px. Therefore, to assess the status of GSH-Px and selenium in cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), we determined serum selenium concentration and blood GSH-Px activity in 52 patients with CL and in 38 healthy controls. Cyclosporine-A (CsA) is widely used to prevent organ rejection in recipients of transplanted organs and also in the treatment of various systemic diseases. CsA has a number of side effects, including gingival overgrowth (GO). However, the pathogenesis of CsA-induced GO remains uncertain. It has been postulated that CsA alters fibroblast activity. CsA is transported in plasma by binding to lipid components. It is possible that changes in serum lipid levels could alter the interaction between the CsA and gingival fibroblasts within the gingival tissues.
