Estimation Of Genetic And Phenotypic Parameters For Daily Milk Yield Of Black Bengal Does, Md. Mohan Mia, Mobarak Akter Md. Yahia Khandoker, Syed Sakhawat Husain, Md. Omar Faruque, David Russell Notter

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic and phenotypic parameters for daily milk yield (DMY) in Black Bengal does. Genetic parameters were estimated using a residual maximum likelihood procedure, fitting an animal model while ignoring maternal genetic or permanent environmental effects. The least squares mean for DMY was 354.76 g. DMY was significantly (P < 0.01) affected by parity, litter size, and season of kidding. The heritability of DMY was low (0.15) and the fact that the trait can only be measured in females suggests that progeny testing may be the best sire selection method for this trait.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In the present study, sensitive and mutant colonies of some ruminal bacterial species isolated from sheep, cattle, and buffalo were detected. We counted and considered \"mutant colonies\" the bacterial colonies grown in the clear inhibition zone in the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion susceptibility test. Detected mutant colonies were higher in buffalo than in cattle and sheep. Duricef and metronidazole caused no mutations in any species. The others formed mutant colonies, where roxithromycin = polymyxin = chloramphenicol = gentamicin < erythromycin < vancomycin < piperacillin = cefotaxime < streptomycin < cefoperazone < ciprofloxacin < amikacin. Sheep had the highest number of sensitive isolates, and the number of sensitive isolates was dramatically lower in cattle and buffalo. There were no sensitive isolates with the antibiotic metronidazole, and there was a low number of sensitive isolates with duricef. The other antibiotics had more sensitive isolates (gentamicin = ciprofloxacin = amikacin > streptomycin = piperacillin > erythromycin > vancomycin = cefoperazone = cefotaxime > roxithromycin > polymyxin > chloramphenicol). The number of sensitive isolates of the different ruminant species for …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Dietary supplementation effects of 0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1% glutamine were investigated on the performance and development of the gastrointestinal tract in broilers reared under hot conditions. No significant differences were observed between the treatments for feed intake and feed conversion ratio during the starter period, grower period, or entire experiment (P > 0.05). During the grower period, only 0.5% glutamine-fed birds had higher body weight gain than others (P < 0.05). For the entire period, body weight gain of 0.5% glutamine-fed birds was greater than that of 0.00% and 0.25% glutamine-fed ones (P < 0.05). Furthermore, 0.5% glutamine-fed birds showed longer villus height than other birds (P < 0.05). In the jejunum, both 0.5% and 1% glutamine consumption caused longer villus height as compared to 0.00% and 0.25% glutamine (P < 0.05). Villus height of 0.25% glutamine-fed birds was higher than that of 0.00% glutamine-fed ones (P < 0.05). None of the ileum morphological parameters were affected by glutamine supplementation (P > 0.05). In conclusion, supplementation of 0.5% glutamine improved the intestinal morphology and body weight gain of broilers under heat stress. Higher dietary glutamine (1%) increased the villus height in the jejunum …

Caspase-1, -2, And -3 Gene Expression Is Enhanced In The Heart And Lung Of Chickens With Pulmonary Hypertension (Ascites), Hossein Hassanpour, Masood Teshfam, Hassan Momtaz, Hamed Zarei, Shahab Bahadoran

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

To investigate the involvement of apoptosis in the pathogenesis of T3-induced pulmonary hypertension in broiler chickens, caspase-1, -2, and -3 gene expressions were evaluated by semiquantitative RT-PCR in the lungs and left and right heart ventricles. One-day-old fast-growing chickens were randomly divided into 2 equal groups with 3 replicates per group. Chicks were reared for 7 weeks under standard conditions. T3 as a thyroid hormone was added to the ration after week 1 of rearing. Pulmonary hypertension was induced at 49 days based on RV/TV ratio index. The caspase genes were constitutively expressed in the lung and right and left …

Disturbance Of Antioxidant Protection And Natural Resistance Factors In Rats With Different Availabilities Of Trivalent Chromium, Vasyl Vlizlo, Ruslana Iskra, Ihor Maksymovych, Marcin Wojciech Lis, Jerzy Wojciech Niedziólka

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to examine the influence of trivalent chromium ions (Cr^{3+}) supplementation on antioxidant status and immune defense of rats. During the 30 days of the experiment, the male rats (n = 10 per group) were supplemented with CrCl_3, dissolved in distilled drinking water in doses of 0, 70, or 140 µg Cr^{3+}/dm^3. Next, the contents of hydroperoxides of lipids (HPL) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in plasma were determined, as well as the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and reduced glutathione (GSH) in erythrocytes. Lysozymic and …

Immunohistochemical Distribution Of Glutathione Peroxidase And Its Gene Expression Via Rt-Pcr In The Liver Tissue Of Melatonin-Administered Mice, Serap Koral Taşçi, Nurhayat Gülmez

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of exogenous administration of melatonin, which is a strong antioxidant agent, on the gene expression of glutathione peroxidase, which is one of the antioxidant enzymes, in the livers of mice and also to examine the immunohistochemical localization of the enzyme. The 24 male Swiss albino mice used in the study were divided into 3 groups: experimental (n = 8), sham (n = 8), and control (n = 8). A 10 mg/kg dose of melatonin was administered intraperitoneally to the experimental group for 4 weeks. Only ethanol and a serum physiological …
