Mammary gland infections occur due to bacterial changes in the mammary tissue. Studies conducted in recent years have reported variations in the most common bacteria differ according to geographical locations. California mastitis test (CMT), somatic cell count (SCC), and aerobic colony count (ACC) analyses were performed on approximately 50 mL of hygienically collected raw milk samples. Raw milk was also subjected to conventional bacteriological isolation and identification. Bacterial diversity and rates in raw milk were compared through metagenome analysis. Two samples, one from healthy milk and another from subclinical milk with mastitis, were independently tested to determine whether there were …

Influence Of Temperature-Humidity Index, Calf Sex, And Parity On Gestation Length In Holstein Cows, Lazoumi Ouarfli, Abdelmadjid Chehma

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study aimed to analyse the gestation length (GL) variability in locally born purebred Holstein dams (n = 1047), in a private farm, under Saharan climate. The overall GL mean was 278.73 ± 6.67 days. A general linear model revealed that the GL was significantly affected by calf sex (p = 0.035) with a minor increase of 0.19% in males, dam parity (p = 0.016) and calving season (p < 0.0001) including the shortest lengths recorded in heifers and during heat stress period. Moreover, a negative regression (-1.96%) in recent years was recorded in GL by the influence (p = 0.01) of years of birth, breeding, and calving of cows. Our findings show that cows that were inseminated and gave birth during the cold season (temperature-humidity index, THI < 74) had 11.54 days longer (p = 0.048) gestation period compared to animals that were inseminated and gave birth during the hot season (THI > 84). Similarly, the association (p = 0.003) between dam parity and calf sex revealed that the GL of multiparous cows that gave birth to male calves was higher (3.07 days) …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

To identify metabolic indicators in blood and urine for early pregnancy in dairy cows (32 crossbred and 12 purebred zebu cows), blood and urine samples were collected on days 0, 15, 20, 24, and 30 postbreeding. The plasma progesterone (P4) concentration was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in pregnant cows than in nonpregnant cows after day 15. The plasma blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration remained significantly (P < 0.05) higher in pregnant cows on day 15. The plasma concentrations of cholesterol, glucose, protein, and nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) did not differ between pregnant and nonpregnant cows. The urine protein concentration was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in pregnant zebu cows compared to nonpregnant zebu cows. Plasma P4 was significantly (P < 0.001) and positively associated with urine glucose levels in nonpregnant crossbred cows. In nonpregnant zebu cows, the correlation between P4 was positive (P < 0.05) with plasma cholesterol, glucose, urine glucose, and protein. In pregnant zebu cows, P4 was negatively associated with plasma BUN and positively (P < 0.05) associated with both plasma and urine glucose levels. Thus, urinary proteins can be used as a noninvasive tool for early nonpregnancy confirmation in cows with very high accuracy at around 24 days after artificial insemination.

Incidence And Occurrence Time Of Clinical Mastitis In Holstein Cows, Ismail Boujenane, Jalila El Aimani, Khalid By

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of clinical mastitis (CM) and its risk factors in 1725 Holstein cows. Data were collected from a private farm from 2008 to 2012. The analysis of risk factors, performed with logistic regression, showed that cows at parity 2, 3, and 4 had 65%, 88%, and 115% risk of mastitis, respectively. This risk was higher (P < 0.001) than in cows at first parity. Cows that calved from October to January had the highest (P < 0.05) risk of mastitis. The number of mastitis cases in cows at lactation 2, 3, and 4 was 18.5%, 25.9%, and 40.7%, respectively, and was higher compared to cows at first lactation. Furthermore, cows that calved from July to September showed the highest number of mastitis cases. Gamma regression parameter estimates showed that the onset time of mastitis 1 and 2 in cows that calved from October to January occurred at 16.3 and 8.5 days, respectively. This was later than cows calving from July to September. The study concluded that it is necessary to examine cows for CM during the first 2 months of lactation in order to prevent mastitis and decrease its rate of incidence.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the interval between artificial insemination and the onset of estrus on the sex ratio of offspring and fertility in Holstein cows. Standing to be mounted behavior was considered the beginning of estrus, and artificial inseminations were performed 6 h (Group 1), 9 h (Group 2), 12 h (Group 3), and 15 h (Group 4) after the onset of estrus in cows. Overall 119 (n: 85), 107 (n: 72), 120 (n: 80) and 119 (n: 83) artificial inseminations were performed in Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Pregnancy rates …

Treatment Of Infertile Cows: Efficacy Of Pgf_{2\Alpha} And Gentamicin Or Their Combination In A Prid Regime, Yavuz Öztürkler, Ömer Uçar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The efficacy of PGF_{2\alpha} and intrauterine gentamicin or their combination in a progesterone releasing intravaginal device (PRID) regime was investigated for treatment of infertility in cows. From 46 infertile cows, body condition scores (BCSs) were recorded and the cows were then divided into 4 experimental groups according to the synchronisation protocol and intrauterine gentamicin administration as follows: i) PRID (1.55 g of progesterone and 10 mg of oestradiol benzoate) for 12 days plus artificial insemination (AI) at 48 and 72 h (group 1, n = 8), ii) PRID for 12 days plus an i.m. injection of 0.150 mg of cloprostenol …
