Typically, a comprehensive orthodontic treatment requires two to three years of active tooth movement, which may not seem desirable for adults. Orthodontic appliances can impede proper oral hygiene and increase the risk of white spot lesions and caries. Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are attractive cell sources for tissue engineering application because of their ability to proliferate and differentiate into mesenchymal tissues. MSCs derived from human gingiva are readily accessible and highly proliferative with the ability to differentiate into an osteogenic lineage, making them ideal sources for tissue regeneration of craniofacial defects. While dexamethasone is a traditional inducer of osteogenic differentiation, studies have shown that its prolonged presence in culture medium may have toxic effects on osteoblasts. The purpose of this dissertation study was to investigate whether the ACA insurance expansion correlates with the number of visits made to emergency departments (EDs). The quasi-experimental design interrupted time series was utilized in the analysis. Precocious puberty, measured by thelarche or menarche, is a well-established breast cancer risk factor. Using a unique and patented tissue engineering system we established cell lines from 48 primary cultures of normal breast tissue from reduction mammoplasties and used them as an in vitro model of thelarche, quantifying episphere formation and ductal differentiation. Differential ductal formation was observed based on ancestry. In light of African American (AA) precocious thelarche both in vivo and as we observed in vitro, we hypothesized that AA women would exhibit an increased proportion of breast stem cells, with greater potency for differentiation. Latimer et al., have previously shown nucleotideexcision repair (NER) to be intrinsically deficient in stage I sporadic BC by function and gene expression. Previous work performed on 12 isogenically matched stage I tumors and non-tumor adjacent (NTA) samples identified 2 types of NTA tissue with regard to functional NER. However, Haitian Americans remain one of the underserved populations in the United States. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) include childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, and household dysfunction. Much has been reported about the detrimental outcomes associated with these experiences. The associated negative outcomes of ACEs can include addiction, suicide, disability, teenage pregnancy, and early death. However, it is well known that many people experience ACEs and do very well. Purpose: The purpose of this initiative was to develop and implement an interprofessional panel aimed to expose a university audience to the magnitude of opioid misuse and abuse, as well as demonstrate each health professional’s role in curbing the epidemic. Further, this experience was to provide a platform for interprofessional discussion and to share with attendees tangible action items to begin combatting the opioid epidemic.
