Methadone For Treatment Of Pregnant Opiate Addicted Women: Is There A Safer Alternative? A Review Of Literature, Holly L. Tichelkamp, Thomas G. Parish

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Methadone is commonly used for the treatment of pregnant opiate-addicts. But, it can have severe effects on the neonate including Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, increased length of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, and intrauterine growth retardation. Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome includes neurological excitability, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and autonomic signs. Because of these adverse effects, studies have been conducted to determine what can help reduce the severe complications caused by methadone. Varied dosages of methadone and alternative medications, such as buprenorphine, slow-release morphine, and others have been studied. Most of the alternative medications, especially buprenorphine, are gaining popularity in Europe where there …

The Reliability And Validity Of The Elderly Mobility Scale In The Acute Hospital Setting, Joanne Stacey Nolan, Lucinda Elaine Remilton, Margaret Mary Green Oct 2008

The Reliability And Validity Of The Elderly Mobility Scale In The Acute Hospital Setting, Joanne Stacey Nolan, Lucinda Elaine Remilton, Margaret Mary Green

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Elderly Mobility Scale (EMS) in an acute hospital setting. Intra-rater (n=15) and inter-rater (n=18) reliability were investigated using physiotherapists who viewed and scored video-recorded mobility assessments using the EMS on two occasions, one week apart. Latent class analysis of EMS scores showed that neither the occasion of testing (intra-rater reliability) (R2=0.0035, p=0.72), therapist (inter-rater reliability (R2=0.0051, p=1.00), years of experience (R2=0.0058, p=1.00) nor number of EMS assessments previously completed (R2=0.0048, p=1.00) had any impact on the EMS scores. The only factor which impacted on clustering was the EMS score (R2=0.8263, …

Sex Differences In Angiotensin Signaling In Bulbospinal Neurons In The Rat Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla, Gang Wang, Teresa A. Milner, Robert C. Speth, Andrea C. Gore, Di Wu, Costantino Iadecola, Joseph P. Pierce Oct 2008

Sex Differences In Angiotensin Signaling In Bulbospinal Neurons In The Rat Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla, Gang Wang, Teresa A. Milner, Robert C. Speth, Andrea C. Gore, Di Wu, Costantino Iadecola, Joseph P. Pierce

HPD Articles

Sex differences may play a significant role in determining the risk of hypertension. Bulbospinal neurons in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) are involved in the tonic regulation of arterial pressure and participate in the central mechanisms of hypertension. Angiotensin II (ANG II) acting on angiotensin type 1 (AT(1)) receptors in RVLM neurons is implicated in the development of hypertension by activating NADPH oxidase and producing reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, we analyzed RVLM bulbospinal neurons to determine whether there are sex differences in: 1) immunolabeling for AT(1) receptors and the key NADPH oxidase subunit p47 using dual-label immunoelectron microscopy, and …

Do Multiple Stroke-Related Educational Opportunities Enhance Stroke Knowledge Among Students Enrolled In Communication Sciences And Disorders Programs?, Kristen S. Lankford, E. Lauren Marshall, Amanda D. Pittman, Charles Ellis

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Stroke education modules have been added to medical school curriculums to improve stroke knowledge in graduate physicians, and this has resulted in positive outcomes. These findings suggest that similar strategies may be successful in graduate programs such as Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of multiple stroke-related education opportunities on students enrolled in CSD programs. Methods: Seventy-six first and second year students enrolled in a Communication Sciences and Disorders program completed a survey of stroke risk factors and early warning signs of stroke. Results: Risk factor knowledge - 97% identified …

Undergoing Venipuncture In Healthcare Education: The Psycho-Biological Effect On Students, Orly Sarid, Ofra Anson, Dagan Schwartz, Arich Yaari

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Venipuncture training is an integral part of healthcare educational programs. Despite its extensive use, no previous studies have evaluated the psychobiological impact of this procedure among health-care students. Participants were 26 healthy students, practicing venipuncture on each other as part of their curricular activity. Self reported pencil and paper questionnaires aimed at assessing depression, anxiety and mood states were administered before and after venipuncture and saliva sample collection. Anti heat shock protein (Hsp) 70 and cortisol levels in blood and saliva were collected from the participants. A reduction in anxiety, anger and confusion mood states took place after venipuncture. All …

HPD Articles

AIMS: To determine whether the novel non-AT1, non-AT2 binding site for angiotensins recently discovered in rodent brains occurs in the human brain. MAIN METHODS: Radioligand binding assays of (125)I-sarcosine(1), isoleucine(8) angiotensin II binding were carried out in homogenates of the rostral pole of the temporal cortex of human brains containing 0.3 mM parachloromercuribenzoate (PCMB), 10 microM losartan to saturate AT1 receptors, 10 microM PD123319 to saturate AT2 receptors, with or without 10 microM angiotensin II to define specific binding. Competition binding assays employed a variety of angiotensin peptides, specific angiotensin receptor antagonists, several neuropeptides and an endopeptidase inhibitor to determine …

Drug Interaction Profile Of Posaconazole, Simon Leung, Mara Poulakos Apr 2008

Drug Interaction Profile Of Posaconazole, Simon Leung, Mara Poulakos

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Adverse drug events resulting from drug-drug interactions may lead to emergency department visits, hospitalizations, prolonged length of stays, increased medical care costs, and death. Despite the efforts of research, clinical studies, and active reporting to identify and explain these drug interaction pathways, clinicians are often unaware of such drug-drug interactions. Therefore, it is imperative for pharmacists to identify these potential drug-drug interactions and notify the clinicians as well as the patients so that appropriate safety measures and monitoring methods are implemented. Specifically, immunocompromised patients often receive multiple drug regimens which are associated with toxicities and are highly susceptible to drug-drug …
