In this study, the growth, age composition, sex ratio, condition factor and spawning period of whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus Nordmann, 1840) on the eastern part of the Trabzon-Yomra coast were investigated. During the study, a total of 1730 fish (1122 females and 608 males) ranging in age from group I to IX were examined. The chi squared test was used to calculate ratios between female and male specimens and no significant difference was found (P>0.05), and the relative growth length and the relative growth weight differences between females and males were not found to be statistically significant (P>0.05). …

The Effect Of Starter Culture Use In Pastırma Production On The Properties Of End Product, Muhammet İrfan Aksu, Mükerrem Kaya

The effects of three different starter preparations (Staphylococcus carnosus, Staphylococcus carnosus + Lactobocillus pentosus and Staphylococcus xylosus + Lactobacillus sakei) on the end product of pastırma were investigated. In the production of pastırma samples, dry curing was performed using NaCl, KNO_3, glucose and saccarose, and starter culture was added together with curing compounds to the meat. The starter culture used affected the counts of total aeophilic mesophilic Micrococcus/Staphylococcus and lactic acid bacteria. In this study, congenital malformations are described in one calf. In the calf, accessory tongue, which is a rare condition, was determined together with palatoschisis and growth malformations of cranial bones. The accessory tongue observed in this study is the first case described in calves.

In this research, which investigated the quantitative histomorphologic development of the parabronchi and atria of lungs at 1, 3, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days old, 60 male quail were used. The interparabronchial septa were absent among the lung units which consist of parabronchi, atria and gas exchange tissue. It was observed that on the 1^{st} day of hatching, the lungs had the same properties as adults and that there was no structural difference between the right and left lungs. The morphology of the spinal cord in 15 chickens, 15 ducks and 15 pigeons obtained from the Ankara region were examined. The spinal cord consisted of 15 cervical, 7 thoracic, 14 lumbosacral and 5 coccygeal segments (a total of 41 segments) in the chickens; 15 cervical, 8 thoracic, 16 lumbosacral and 5 coccygeal segments (a total of 44 segments) in the ducks and 13 cervical, 6 thoracic, 13 lumbosacral and 5 coccygeal segments (a total of 37 segments) in the pigeons. This research was carried out with the aim of improving the conservation and feed value characteristics of citrus pulps. In order to ensure and improve citrus pulp conservation even for short periods (1 week), several methods intended to inhibit yeast activity were examined. Orange and grapefruit pulps were used as feed materials and three heads of merino male yearlings fitted with rumen cannula were used as animal materials. This study was carried out to investigate the fattening performance, and slaughter and carcass characteristics of Chios x Akkaraman F_1 and B_1 crossbred lambs. The data for the fattening study were obtained from 8 F_1 and 10 B_1 crossbred lambs. Five male lambs from each genotype were slaughtered to determine the slaughter and carcass characteristics. This study was carried out in Kıvırcık ewes to increase reproductive performance and synchronize oestrus by using progestagen pessaries (40 mg FGA) and different doses of PMSG (0, 500 and 700 IU) during the breeding season. One hundred and twenty thoroughbred breeder mares with endometritis or infertility were investigated for the detection of antibodies to Taylorella equigenitalis by the passive haemagglutination (PHA) test and ELISA between 1997 and 1999 in the Marmara region and the two tests were compared. Fifty-eight (48.33 %) of 120 sera were found to be positive by the PHA test and 52 (43.33%) by ELISA. 22 of the sera were found to be positive by the PHA test reacted at 1/64 titer, 27 at 1/128, 7 at 1/256 and 2 at 1/512 titer. Mathematical models have been developed to explore the population dynamics of viral diseases among wildlife. However, assessing the predictions stemming from these models with wildlife databases adequate in size and temporal duration is uncommon. An epizootic of raccoon rabies that began in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States in the late 1970s has developed into one of the largest and most extensive in the history of wildlife rabies. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Puppies antibody titer response to Canine Distemper virus (CDV) before and after vaccination with a CDV-combined vaccine was studied using a serum neutralization test (SN). A total of 201 samples were obtained from puppies at the Small Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. The result showed that 100%(82/82) of the puppies, before vaccination, had no detectable SN titre (CDV SN-titer <2). Puppies 14 days after the first and second vaccination had a log2 (geometric mean titer, GMT) of 5.2 and 7.8. A group of 20 puppies in which the antibody response was followed after vaccination for a period of time showed the comparable results (log2 [GMT] = 5.3 and 8.5, respectively). There was no difference in the CDV SN-titers among puppies of different ages at vaccination, nor those with a vaccination history for their mothers (p>0.05).

The diagnosis of canine distemper (CD) by a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique using 2 sets of primer which were specific to two regions on the cDNA of nucleocapsid protein (NP) gene of the canine distemper virus (CDV), Onderstepoort strain. Together with pathology and immunohistochemistry, the RT-PCR test was used to confirm the diagnosis of canine distemper in 20 dogs. Histopathological examination revealed that 70% (14/20) had pneumonia, 50% (10/20) had non-suppurative encephalitis, 33% (7/20) had splenic follicular necrosis and 35% (7/ 20) had gastroenteritis. Brain adaptation to hyposmolarity is accomplished by loss of both electrolytes and organic osmolytes, including amino acids, polyalcohols and methylamines. In brain in vivo, the organic osmolytes account for about 35% of the total solute loss. This review focus on the role of amino acids in cell volume regulation, in conditions of sudden hyposmosis, when cells respond by active regulatory volume decrease (RVD) or after gradual exposure to hyposmotic solutions, a condition where cell volume remains unchanged, named isovolumetric regulation (IVR). Nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of Brazilian bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) field isolates identified four viruses belonging to the genotype 2. Comparison of 5’ UTR sequences from these isolates to those of North American BVDV type 2 revealed genomic variations that correlated with the geographic origins of the isolates. Two of the Brazilian type 2 viruses were isolated from clinical cases of gastroenteric/respiratory disease and two were isolated from healthy bovine fetuses. According to the ‘developmental constraint hypothesis’ of comparative mammalian neuroanatomy, brain growth follows predictable allometric trends. Therefore, brain structures should scale to the entire brain in the same way across mammals. Evidence for a departure from this pattern for cerebellum volume has recently been reported among the anthropoid primates. One of the mammalian groups that has been neglected in tests of the ‘developmental constraint hypothesis’ is the cetaceans (dolphins, whales, and porpoises). Thompson and Sawtell report that the Promega Anti-PARP p85 antibody did not recognize cleaved PARP in mouse or rabbit cells in their experiments, and conclude that the results reported with this antibody by Perng et al. (1) are an artifact. The Promega antibody was generated against a peptide based on the sequence of human p85. Although the corresponding bovine sequence differs by two amino acids, the antibody reacts with both human and bovine p85 (2). An epidemiological investigation of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Sawang Arom Dairy Co-operatives farm, between September-December 1998, found that 59 dairy farms holding 720 cattle, reported outbreak of the disease. Clinical examination revealed clinical signs in 65.55% of farms. Abortion (2.08%), stillbirth (0.83%) and mortality (0.83%) were found among the sick animals. The outbreaks were evident after introducing animals into farms where pregnant cows and calves were not vaccinated. An outbreak of leptospirosis in a 2600 sow breeding herd, in which 5% of the sows aborted, was investigated. Serum samples from 11 aborted sows were examined for leptospira antibodies. Using a Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), containing only 12 serovars, no leptospira serovars were detected. However, after using a Microcapsule Agglutination Test (MCAT) kit, a further MAT using the additional three serovars (sejroe, hardjo and bratislava) revealed that the cause of abortion was Leptospira interrogan serovars bratislava and sejroe. Protein profiles of crude extracts from adult male and female Haemonchus placei, Mecistocirrus digitatus and Cooperia spp. were studied. The parasites were collected from the abomasum and duodenum of cattle at Pathumthani and Nonthaburi’s abattoirs. SDS-PAGE analysis of the crude extracts revealed, protein bands of various intensities ranging from 13- 24 bands with a molecular mass of between 19-130 kDa. The protein band patterns of each parasite at a molecular weight of between 48.2-111 kDa were similar whereas other protein bands at a molecular mass below 48.2 kDa were different. The Antimicrobial Resistance Of Salmonellae Isolated From Animals, Indhira Kramomtong, Channarong Rodkhum, Waree Niyomthum

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A total of 39 salmonella isolates were obtained from organ samples taken from duck, chicken and pig carcasses on 34 farms. They were tested for resistance to 11 antimicrobial drugs. 69.2% of isolates were resistant to at least one drug. Most resistances was shown to tetracycline and sulfamethoxazole while most isolates were susceptible to norfloxacin, enrofloxacin, flumiquine and furazolidone. Ampicillin and cephapirin were effective on the salmonella isolates from ducks and chicken, whereas kanamycin was effective on the isolates from chicken and pigs. Serum Cholinesterase Levels In Elephants, Piyarat Subhachalat, Wara Panichkriangkrai, Sittidet Mahasawangkul, Taweepok Angkawanich, Sirintorn Yibchok-A-Nun

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Serum cholinesterase (ChE) levels were determined in adult elephants in the summer, the rainy season and in the winter by a colorimetric method using acetylthiocholine as the substrate. The results showed that ChE levels in adult males were lower than those in adult females, in all three seasons (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the ChE level was at it’s highest in the rainy season, falling lower inมthe summer and lower again in the winter season. The difference was found in both sexes. This study is the first report on the measurement of ChE levels in elephants.
