Characterisation Of Chemosensory Trigeminal Receptors In The Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus Mykiss: Responses To Chemical Irritants And Carbon Dioxide, Jessica J. Mettam, Catherine R. Mccrohan, Lynne U. Sneddon

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

Trigeminally innervated, mechanically sensitive chemoreceptors (M) were previously identified in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, but it is not known whether these receptors are responsive only to noxious, chemical irritants or have a general chemosensory function. This study aimed to characterise the stimulus–response properties of these receptors in comparison with polymodal nociceptors (P). Both P and M gave similar response profiles to acetic acid concentrations. The electrophysiological properties were similar between the two different afferent types. To determine whether the receptors have a nociceptive function, a range of chemical stimulants was applied to these receptors, including non-noxious stimuli such as ammonium …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this experiment 72,000 broiler breeder eggs (Ross 308 strain) collected from 36-week-old flocks were subjected to cold stress during transportation. Eggs were allocated to 4 temperature groups (treatments): 1.2 °C, 1-2 °C, 2.5-3.9 °C, 4-6 °C, and a control group, 21-22 °C. Each treatment had 14,400 eggs, and data were analyzed in a completely randomized design. The results of this study showed that cold stress had a significant effect on percentage of egg weight loss (P < 0.001), and minimal egg weight loss occurred in the control group. The percentage of exploders and early hatched chicks and chick weight were higher in the below zero temperature treatment than the other groups (P < 0.01). Cold stress had a significant effect on chick length, hatchability, and the hatching of fertile eggs (P < 0.001). The effects of cold stress on chick yield and body weight uniformity were significant (P < 0.01). The effect of cold stress on hatchery byproduct efficiency was significant (P < 0.001), but did not affect fertility. Cold stress also had significant effects on early (1-8 days), middle (9-17 days), and late mortality (20-21 days); total embryo mortality; and exposed brain. Ectopic viscera was significant (P < 0.001), and most mortality was observed in below 4 °C treatments. Total percentages of malpositions and deformity (P < 0.001) and egg contamination at 1-9 days (first stage) and 10-21 days (second phase) were affected by cold stress (P < 0.001). Cold stress also had a significant impact on the number of cull chicks; percent of string navel, button navel, total string, and button; omphalitis; full body cavity; red hocks; dehydration; dirty chickens; and stubby down. Cold stress affects performance during incubation and overall chick quality.

Immune System Dysfunction In Broiler Chickens Experimentally Inoculated With Fowl Adenovirus Serotype-4 Associated With Inclusion Body Hepatitis Hydropericardium Syndrome, Iftikhar Hussain, Muhammad Shahid Mahmood, Muhammad Imran Arshad, Masood Akhtar, Fazal Mahmood, Azhar Rafique Jan 2012

Immune System Dysfunction In Broiler Chickens Experimentally Inoculated With Fowl Adenovirus Serotype-4 Associated With Inclusion Body Hepatitis Hydropericardium Syndrome, Iftikhar Hussain, Muhammad Shahid Mahmood, Muhammad Imran Arshad, Masood Akhtar, Fazal Mahmood, Azhar Rafique

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Inclusion body hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (IBH-HPS) in broilers is caused by an adenovirus, here referred to as inclusion body hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome virus (IBH-HPSV). This study describes the immune status of broiler chickens experimentally inoculated with an isolate of fowl adenovirus-4 serotype-1, involved in IBH-HPS in various trials. When compared with the unchallenged controls, IBH-HPSV-inoculated broilers had significantly higher atrophy of the bursa of Fabricius (BF) by up to 2-fold, as well as of the thymus (up to 9-fold) and spleen (up to 1.5-fold) (P < 0.05), with up to 60% mortality. Upon challenge with sheep red blood cells (SRBCs), IBH-HPSV-inoculated birds had from 2- to 3-log lower anti-SRBC antibody titers than the control. Response to phytohemagglutinin-P (PHA-P) was significantly reduced in IBH-HPSV-inoculated birds (P < 0.05) as compared to the control. Results of the studies revealed that the immune status of broilers is compromised significantly during IBH-HPSV infection in terms of lymphoid organ integrity, humoral, and cell-mediated immune responses, respectively. These findings suggest that immune dysfunction could be a contributing factor in the increased mortality of birds affected by IBH-HPS, which renders the birds immunosuppressed for the rest of their lives.
