A Perspective On Multiple Waves Of Influenza Pandemics, Anna Mummert, Howard Weiss, Li-Ping Long, José M. Amigó, Xiu-Feng Wan

CVM Publications

BACKGROUND: A striking characteristic of the past four influenza pandemic outbreaks in the United States has been the multiple waves of infections. However, the mechanisms responsible for the multiple waves of influenza or other acute infectious diseases are uncertain. Understanding these mechanisms could provide knowledge for health authorities to develop and implement prevention and control strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We exhibit five distinct mechanisms, each of which can generate two waves of infections for an acute infectious disease. The first two mechanisms capture changes in virus transmissibility and behavioral changes. The third mechanism involves population heterogeneity (e.g., demography, geography), where …

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Strongyle parasites are ubiquitous in grazing horses. Strongylus vulgaris, the most pathogenic of the large strongyles, is known for its extensive migration in the mesenteric arterial system. The lifecycle of S. vulgaris is characterised by a long prepatent period where the migrating larvae are virtually undetectable as there currently is no test available for diagnosing prepatent S. vulgaris infection. Presence of S. vulgaris larvae in the arterial system causes endarteritis and thrombosis with a risk of non-strangulating intestinal infarctions. Emergence of anthelmintic resistance among cyathostomins has led to recommendations of reduced treatment intensity by targeting horses that exceed a …

Navigating Diversity And Inclusion In Veterinary Medicine, Lisa M. Greenhill, Kauline Cipriani Davis, Patricia M. Lowrie, Sandra F. Amass

New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond

This book addresses the continued lack of the diversity in veterinary medicine, the least inclusive of all medical professions. Effective navigation of the complexity of diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine requires clear enumeration, recognition, and understanding of key issues, challenges, and opportunities. In a nation with rapidly changing demographics, public needs and expectations of the veterinary profession will continue to evolve. A more diverse scientific workforce is required to feed the veterinary profession, not just for the purposed of equity, but as necessity for its sustainability and relevance. The book lays out the history of diversity in the veterinary profession, …

The Role Of Kisspeptin Signaling In Reproduction Of Ruminant, Thuchadaporn Chaikhun, Pongsiwa Sotthibandhu, Siriwat Suadsong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

In the present decade, kisspeptin has been a fascinating topic in the reproductive spotlight. Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide, produced mainly in the hypothalamus from Kiss1 gene. This gene was initially discovered in 1996 as a tumor suppressor gene in human malignant melanoma. Then in the year 2003, researchers found that mutations of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPR54), which is the strongly cognate receptor of kisspeptin, were associated with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in mice and humans. There are many kisspeptin distribution and function studies (both in vitro and in vivo) in mammals. In ruminants, kisspeptin has been studied mainly in sheep and …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Mutation of the G6S gene in Anglo-Nubian (AN) goat causes non-function of the N-acetylglucosamide 6- sulfatase enzyme within lysosomes, which increases heparin sulfate accumulation and induces pathogenesis of the internal organs. Transversion of base C to T at nucleotide 322 changes decoding of an amino arginine to a stop codon (R322X) and produces a truncated protein. This mutation is detrimental to the health of a goat kid leading to delay in nervous development and death. It was found first time in goats of a Michigan herd in the US, but has not yet been reported in Thailand. This study aimed …

Morphological Aspects By Light And Scanning Electron Microscopic Studies Of Swamp Buffalo Endometrium At Follicular And Mid-Luteal Phases, Paisan Tienthai, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study was carried out to observe morphological changes of swamp buffalo endometrium at follicularand mid-luteal phases. Uterine horns were collected from female buffaloes at a local abattoir and the selected estrousstages were categorized into the follicular (n = 10) and mid-luteal (n = 10) phases. General histology andhistomorphometry were examined under light microscope (LM) whereas a scanning electron microscope (SEM) wasused to study surface epithelial changes. The results showed that the height of the endometrial epithelium, thenumber of superficial endometrial glands and the number of capillaries were significantly greater (p < 0.05) at thefollicular phase. By SEM examination, the ciliated and secretory cells with different patterns, i.e. abundant microvillion the apical part or secretory protrusion in various degrees, distinctly increased at the follicular phase. In themeantime, numerous secretory cells with stubby microvilli were covered throughout the endometrial surface withsecretory vesicles on endometrial glandular orifices at the mid-luteal phase in which the ciliated cells were sparselyseen. It was concluded that the swamp buffalo endometrium obviously revealed modifications during the estrouscycle for physiological events, i.e. sperm transport, early embryonic development and implantation.

Role Of An Iron-Dependent Transcriptional Regulator In The Pathogenesis And Host Response To Infection With Streptococcus Pneumoniae., Radha Gupta, Minny Bhatty, Edwin Swiatlo, Bindu Nanduri

CVM Publications

Iron is a critical cofactor for many enzymes and is known to regulate gene expression in many bacterial pathogens. Streptococcus pneumoniae normally inhabits the upper respiratory mucosa but can also invade and replicate in lungs and blood. These anatomic sites vary considerably in both the quantity and form of available iron. The genome of serotype 4 pneumococcal strain TIGR4 encodes a putative iron-dependent transcriptional regulator (IDTR). A mutant deleted at idtr (?idtr) exhibited growth kinetics similar to parent strain TIGR4 in vitro and in mouse blood for up to 48 hours following infection. However, ?idtr was significantly attenuated in a …
