Gender disparity is well documented in the mouse model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) induced with proteolipid protein (PLP) 139–151, in which female, but not male, SJL mice show a chronic relapsing-remitting paralysis. Furthermore, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) has been shown to ameliorate the severity of EAE, but the underlying mechanisms of its protective effects are unclear. Using major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II dextramers for PLP 139-151, we tested the hypothesis that DHT selectively modulates the expansion and functionalities of antigen-specific T cells. Unexpectedly, we noted that DHT induced cell death in antigen-specific, autoreactive T cells, but the effects were not …

The purpose of the project was to evaluate the use of an interactive workshop designed to teach novel practical welfare techniques to beef cattle caretakers and decision makers. Following training, respondents reported being more likely to use or recommend use of local anesthesia for dehorning and castration and were more inclined to use meloxicam for pain management. Respondents also reported improvement in performing all skills taught in the workshop. These results suggest instructional techniques used to teach practical concepts/techniques relevant to beef cattle welfare led to improvements in both perceived competency and estimated likelihood that the material will be used. …

Saposin B (Sap B) is an essential activator protein for arylsulfatase A in the hydrolysis of sulfatide, a lipid component of myelin. To study Sap B’s role in hearing and balance, a Sap B-deficient (B-/-) mouse was evaluated. At both light and electron microscopy (EM) levels, inclusion body accumulation was seen in satellite cells surrounding spiral ganglion (SG) neurons from postnatal month 1 onward, progressing into large vacuoles preceding satellite cell degeneration, and followed by SG degeneration. EM also revealed reduced or absent myelin sheaths in SG neurons from postnatal month 8 onwards. Hearing loss was initially seen …

Reactivation from latency results in transmission of neurotropic herpesviruses from the nervous system to body surfaces, referred to as anterograde axonal trafficking. The virus-encoded protein pUS9 promotes axonal dissemination by sorting virus particles into axons, but whether it is also an effector of fast axonal transport within axons is unknown. To determine the role of pUS9 in anterograde trafficking, we analyzed the axonal transport of pseudorabies virus in the presence and absence of pUS9.

Introduction: Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) cause haemorrhagic colitis and haemolytic uraemic syndrome in humans. Although EHEC infection typically results in haemorrhagic colitis in all ages of human patients, in cattle it is usually limited to 1- to 5-week-old nursing calves.
Case Presentation: A 1-year-old feedlot beef heifer was moribund with neurological signs and bloody diarrhoea. At necropsy, the colonic mucosa contained multiple grossly visible haemorrhagic erosions, each measuring <1 mm in diameter. Histologically, foci corresponding to the gross erosions had E. coli O165 antigen-positive bacterial rods adherent to the apical surfaces of degenerate and necrotic colonic mucosal epithelial cells in association with attaching and effacing lesions, and also within cytoplasmic vacuoles in …1>

Infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV) causes significant economic losses in farmed shrimp, where associated mortality in ponds can reach 70%. To explore host/pathogen interactions, a next-generation sequencing approach using lymphoid organ tissue from IMNV-infected Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp was conducted. Preliminary sequence assembly of just the virus showed that there were at least an additional 639 bp at the 5′ terminus and 23 nt at the 3′ terminus as compared with the original description of the IMNV genome (7561 nt). Northern blot and reverse transcription-PCR analysis confirmed the presence of novel sequence at both ends of the genome. Using 5′ RACE, an …

The advent of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) tetramer technology has been a major contribution to T cell immunology, because tetramer reagents permit detection of antigen-specific T cells at the single-cell level in heterogeneous populations by flow cytometry. However, unlike MHC class I tetramers, the utility of MHC class II tetramers has been less frequently reported. MHC class II tetramers can be used successfully to enumerate the frequencies of antigen-specific CD4 T cells in cells activated in vitro, but their use for ex vivo analyses continues to be a problem, due in part to their activation dependency for binding with T …

As feral swine continue to expand their geographical range and distribution across the United States, their involvement in crop damage, livestock predation, and pathogen transmission is likely to increase. Despite the relatively recent discovery of feral swine involvement in the aetiology of a variety of pathogens, their propensity to transmit and carry a wide variety of pathogens is disconcerting. We examined sera from 2055 feral swine for antibody presence to six serovars of Leptospira that can also infect humans, livestock or domestic animals. About 13% of all samples tested positive for at least one serovar, suggesting that Leptospira infection is …

Implementing Innovative Farm Management Practices On Dairy Farms: A Review Of Feeding Systems, Şeyda Özkan, Julian Hill
Implementing Innovative Farm Management Practices On Dairy Farms: A Review Of Feeding Systems, Şeyda Özkan, Julian Hill
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The Australian dairy industry relies primarily on pasture for its feed supply. However, the variability in rainfall negatively affects plant growth, leading to uncertainty in dryland feed supply, especially during periods of high milk price. New feeding (complementary) systems combining perennial ryegrass with another crop and/or pasture species may have the potential to mitigate this seasonal risk and improve productivity and profitability by providing off-season feed. To date, the majority of research studying the integration of alternative crops into pasture-based systems has focused on substitution and utilization of alternative feed sources. There has been little emphasis on the impacts of …

Incidence And Occurrence Time Of Clinical Mastitis In Holstein Cows, Ismail Boujenane, Jalila El Aimani, Khalid By
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of clinical mastitis (CM) and its risk factors in 1725 Holstein cows. Data were collected from a private farm from 2008 to 2012. The analysis of risk factors, performed with logistic regression, showed that cows at parity 2, 3, and 4 had 65%, 88%, and 115% risk of mastitis, respectively. This risk was higher (P < 0.001) than in cows at first parity. Cows that calved from October to January had the highest (P < 0.05) risk of mastitis. The number of mastitis cases in cows at lactation 2, 3, and 4 was 18.5%, 25.9%, and 40.7%, respectively, and was higher compared to cows at first lactation. Furthermore, cows that calved from July to September showed the highest number of mastitis cases. Gamma regression parameter estimates showed that the onset time of mastitis 1 and 2 in cows that calved from October to January occurred at 16.3 and 8.5 days, respectively. This was later than cows calving from July to September. The study concluded that it is necessary to examine cows for CM during the first 2 months of lactation in order to prevent mastitis and decrease its rate of incidence.

Rabies is a fatal infection of the central nervous system produced by a Lyssavirus of the family Rhabdoviridae. The virus is distributed worldwide and is primarily transmitted by rabid animal bites, with multiple reservoirs depending on the region. The vampire bat Desmodus rotundus is distributed in several states of Mexico and is considered the main vector of rabies in cattle. In the state of Baja California, no cases of paralytic rabies have been reported. In this work, we report the first three cases of rabies in feedlot cattle showing nervous signs, which were later confirmed in a reference laboratory by …

Effects Of Spray-Dried Porcine Plasma Replacement With Tryptophan, Pyridoxine, And Niacin Supplementation On Feed Intake And Growth Performance Of Weaning Piglets, Wantamas Jantasin, Liang Chou Hsia
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of feeding a low crude protein diet with supplemental dietary tryptophan in combination with pyridoxine and niacin compared with spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP) supplementation on the performance and feed intake of weaning pigs. A total of 36 crossbred (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc) weaned female pigs of 28 days old were reared under three dietary treatments. Treatments were 1) corn-soybean meal diet, 2) 0.30% synthetic tryptophan + pyridoxine + niacin, and 3) 5% SDPP. The experimental results indicated no significant difference (P > 0.05) in feed intake for pigs fed the …

The Effects Of High Setter And Hatcher Temperatures During Incubation On Slaughter Weight And Carcass Yield In Broilers, Aydin İpek, Arda Sözcü
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was carried out with the aim of determining the effects of higher setter and hatcher temperatures on slaughter weight and carcass yield. In experiment 1, setter temperatures were applied as control (37.8-38.2 °C) and high (38.9-40.0 °C) between days 10 and 18 during incubation. In experiment 2, hatcher temperatures were applied as control (36.8-37.0 °C) and high (38.8-39.0 °C) during the hatching period. A total of 240 chicks from each experiment were randomly selected after the hatching process was complete. At the end of the growing period, a total of 120 broilers from each experiment were weighed and …

The Effects Of Red Grape Pomace Inclusion In Grower Diet On Amino Acid Digestibility, Intestinal Microflora, And Sera And Liver Antioxidant Activity In Broilers, Martina Lichovnikova, Libor Kalhotka, Vojtech Adam, Borivoj Klejdus, Vojtech Anderle
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary red grape pomace (RGP) on amino acid digestibility (AIAAD), intestinal microflora, and antioxidant activity in the sera and liver. Sixty-six broilers were housed in battery cages. They were allocated to six cages corresponding to two dietary treatments with three replicates of each treatment. The treatments were administered from 10 to 36 days and included a control diet and a diet containing 1.5% RGP dry powder with the other components remaining unchanged, compared to the control. The RGP had a significant (P < 0.05) positive effect on the apparent metabolizable energy. The majority of coefficients of AIAAD were higher in the RGP. The ileal digestibility of threonine, serine, proline, and glycine was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in RGP. RGP had a positive effect (P < 0.05) on the content of Lactobacillus in the lower part of the ileum. The blood sera of broilers fed RGP had significantly (P < 0.05) lower 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and uric acid content. The RGP at a concentration of 15 g/kg in the grower diet did not affect the growth of broilers, and RGP is suitable for broiler diets to improve gastrointestinal tract functionality.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of tamsulosin (TAM) dosages on ejaculation and semen quality. Two sets of Latin square experiment design were applied to 6 bucks receiving normal saline (CON), TAM 134.8 nM/kg (LTAM), or 269.7 (HTAM) nM/kg at 1-week intervals. Semen collection, libido, and ejaculatory scoring were undertaken at 3, 6, 9, 12, and 24 h after injection. Heart rate and body temperature were measured before administration and at 30 min, and before semen collection. The results showed that libido score and heart rate were not affected by treatments. Ejaculatory suppression was observed in …
