Arginine metabolism plays a pivotal role in the mammalian reproductive system by controlling various physiological processes of the reproductive organs including follicular development, ovulatory mechanisms and egg production. However little is known about the molecular mechanisms regulating arginine metabolism at early stages of folliculogenesis. The objective of the current study was to determine the arginine metabolic pathways in prehierarchical follicles of Zi geese through the Illumina Hiseq 2500 platform and their transcripts through the de novo assembly. In this study, five different stages of the geese prehierarchical follicles transcriptome were sequenced. A total of 31722729162 bp from 224929214 high quality …

A Simple And Rapid Method For The Extraction Of Genomic Dna From Piglet Tails Without Using Proteinase K, Nathamon Yimpring, Komkrich Teankum, Prapat Suriyaphol, Nutthee Am-In, Gunnaporn Suriyaphol
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Genomic DNA (gDNA) is a prerequisite for genomic research. However, the collection of blood samples from young animals for gDNA extraction is not practical. Since piglet tail docking is routinely performed in pig farms to prevent injury from tail biting, docking tails served as a practical source for gDNA in piglets. However, extraction of gDNA from piglet tails is difficult because of inelasticity and cartilage. The purpose of this study was to develop a rapid and simple method of isolating gDNA from piglet tails for downstream molecular purpose. Chopped piglet tails with ceramic beads in lysis buffer were vortex-homogenized prior …

After the introduction of the pandemic H1N1 swine influenza virus (pdmH1N1 SIV) in Thai swine farms in 2009, a mild clinical outcome was observed and its role in porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) is questionable. A highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (HP-PRRSV) has become endemic in Thai swine farms, recently. This study was conducted to determine the pathogenicity of the pdmH1N1 SIV when co-infected with a HP-PRRSV. Thirty-two weanling pigs from a free PRRSV, SIV, porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) and Mycoplasma spp. commercial farm were randomly divided into 4 groups; Negative, PRRSV, the SIV and Co-infection …

The study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility of L. intracellularis field isolates from Korean pig farms. The novel four field isolates successfully obtained from clinical cases were prepared in IEC-18 cells to conduct the in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) by determining minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC)s; either intracellular (InMIC) or extracellular MICs (ExMIC). The final MICs were assessed by counting the number of heavily infected cells (HICs;> 30 bacteria per cell) using an immunoperoxidase monolayer assay. Enrofloxacin (0.125 to 0.25 μg/mL: InMIC and 2 to 16 μg/mL; ExMIC) presented the most notable antimicrobial susceptibility, and marbofloxacin (0.25 to …

Publications and Research
Sublethal effects of oil spills may dampen seabird rehabilitation success due to lingering negative impacts of contamination and stress on reproduction and long-term survival. These effects can be difficult to measure while birds are in care as well as once birds are released. Expression of sexually selected traits that are sensitive to condition can provide information on physiological status of birds. We evaluated plumage molt and gular pouch skin color of California brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis californicus) following oil contamination and rehabilitation to test for differences between previously oiled and rehabilitated (post-spill) and presumably uncontaminated pelicans. Post-spill pelicans released with …

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae is a globally distributed pathogen that has been associated with pneumonia in both domestic and wild Caprinae. It is closely related to M. hyopneumoniae, a respiratory pathogen of swine that is associated with decreased growth rates of pigs as well as clinical respiratory disease. In order to assess the effects of M. ovipneumoniae on lamb performance, we generated a cohort of lambs free of M. ovipneumoniae by segregation of test negative ewes after lambing, then compared the growth and carcass quality traits of M. ovipneumoniae-free and -colonized lambs from weaning to harvest. Some signs of respiratory disease …

The Morphology And Evolution Of The Primate Brachial Plexus, Brian M. Shearer
The Morphology And Evolution Of The Primate Brachial Plexus, Brian M. Shearer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Primate evolutionary history is inexorably linked to the evolution of a broad array of locomotor adaptations that have facilitated the clade’s invasion of new niches. Researchers studying the evolution of primates and of their individual locomotor adaptations have traditionally relied on bony morphology – a practical choice given the virtual non-existence of any other type of tissue in the fossil record. However, this focus downplays the potential importance of the many other structures involved in locomotion, such as muscle, cartilage, and neural tissue, which may each be influenced by separate selective forces because of their different roles in facilitating movement. …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Swine are important in the ecology of influenza A virus (IAV) globally. Understanding the ecological role of wild pigs in IAV ecology has been limited because surveillance in wild pigs is often for antibodies (serosurveillance) rather than IAVs, as in humans and domestic swine. As IAV antibodies can persist long after an infection, serosurveillance data are not necessarily indicative of current infection risk. However, antibody responses to IAV infections cause a predictable antibody response, thus time of infection can be inferred from antibody levels in serological samples, enabling identification of risk factors of infection at estimated times of infection. Recent …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Two small Indian mongooses (Herpestes auropunctatus) were live-captured in 2012 at separate locations on the Hawaiian Island of Kaua'i, which was previously considered to be free of this invasive species. Genotypes from these two individuals were compared to genotypes of H. auropunctatus from the islands of Hawai'i (n =39), O'ahu (n =91), Maui (n = 39), and Moloka'i (n = 19) to determine the island of origin of the Kaua'i individuals. Genotypes were generated from each individual using five microsatellite loci. Genetic clustering was estimated by Bayesian inference of spatial clustering of individuals and …
Reducing Prairie Dog Populations And Damage By Castration Of Dominant Males, Gary W. Witmer
Reducing Prairie Dog Populations And Damage By Castration Of Dominant Males, Gary W. Witmer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) occur widely across the prairie states of North America. They compete with livestock for forage, transmit plague, and damage lawns, landscaping, and property. Interest in non-lethal methods, such as immunocontraception, is growing; however, reductions in the population due to contraception may be offset by increases in survival because adults and yearlings are not subject to the energetic demands of reproduction, and lower densities may increase the amount of resources available to growing offspring. Surgical sterilization provides a means for modeling these effects. Thus, we castrated males prior to the 1998 breeding season to simulate the …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A finishing study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding corn bran plus solubles, a new feed resulting from a pre-fermentation fiber removal process, compared to wet distillers grains plus solubles at two levels of inclusion (20% and 40% of diet DM). Intake increased with inclusion of byproduct, and steers fed 20% wet distillers had the greatest intakes numerically. Byproduct inclusion, regardless of type, increased daily gain over the corn-based control. Feed conversions were improved with increased inclusion of both Bran + Solubles and wet distillers, and both were superior to the control. Increased inclusion of both byproducts resulted …

Effects Of Prepartum Nutrition On May-Calving Cows And Progeny, Alicia C. Lansford, Jacki A. Musgrave, T. L. Meyer Meyer, Rick N. Funston
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
May-calving dams grazed either sub-irrigated meadow or upland range from Jan. 5 to May 1 each year for 6 years. Within grazing system, dams received either no supplement or 1 lb/d of a 33% CP supplement from Jan. 5 to April 1. Dams grazing meadow in the prepartum period weighed more and had a greater body condition score prior to calving. They also tended to have greater pregnancy rates in the subsequent breeding season and tended to wean heavier calves than dams grazing upland range. Allowing May-calving dams to graze meadow in late gestation may increase herd profitability through increased …

Comparison Of Traditional And Alternative Curing Ingredients On Curing Reactions In A Model Meat System, Faith D. Rasmussen, Gary A. Sullivan
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
To meet consumer trends, alternative curing ingredients are used to replace sodium nitrite and cure accelerators. Due to the complexity of meat, it is challenging to compare traditional and alternative ingredients for curing reactions. Using a model system, sources of nitrite (traditional, sodium nitrite and alternative, cultured celery juice powder), salt, and cure accelerators (traditional, sodium erythorbate, or alternative, cherry juice powder) at ingoing sodium nitrite concentrations of 10, 50, 100, 150, or 200 ppm were evaluated for curing reactions. More complete curing reactions were indicated by a higher concentration of cured meat pigment, and lower sulfhydryl groups. Lower residual …

A pooled analysis of 21 finishing trials (2002–2016; 1530 animals) with cattle individually fed in Calan gate barns was conducted. Mixed model regression analysis following random coefficient methodology was used to evaluate relationships between performance variables and carcass characteristics. Gain had a greater effect on efficiency (R2 = 0.72) compared to intake (R2 = 0.02). The relationship between gain and efficiency was cubic, while intake had a quadratic relationship. The cubic response of gain relative to efficiency was continually increasing with relatively slight curves in the line heavily influenced by points that lay on the ends of the …

The effects of adding urea to a dry rolled corn based finishing diet containing low inclusions of distillers grains was evaluated. Treatments were designed as a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement with factors consisting of wet distillers inclusion (either 12 or 20% of diet DM) and urea inclusion (0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.2% of diet DM). There were no significant interactions observed between distillers inclusion and urea inclusion in the diet. Increasing inclusion of distillers grains improved carcass adjusted average daily gain and feed conversion and reduced dry matter intake. Increasing distillers inclusion also increased 12th rib fat and had a …

A finishing study evaluated the effect of feeding a new, high protein distillers grains along with corn bran plus condensed distillers solubles compared to traditional wet distillers grains, traditional dry distillers grains and a corn-based control. Each byproduct replaced corn at 40% of the diet dry-matter. Intake was not affected by treatment; however gain and carcass weight were greater and feed conversion improved for high protein distillers and corn bran plus solubles than either type of traditional distillers grains or corn. Based on feed efficiency, the feeding values of high protein distillers grains and corn bran plus solubles are 121% …
