A Comparative Study Of The Growth Of Polyoma Virus In Two Secondary Cell Lines: Mouse Lymphoma And Normal Mouse Fibroblasts, Rheeta M. Stecker

In comparing the growth of polyoma virus in secondary cell cultures of a mouse lymphoma (P388D₁, a known polyoma-supporting strain) and normal mouse fibroblasts (Earle’s L cells), the following observations have been made.

The L cell is capable of supporting the growth of the polyoma virus with reproduction and release of infectious particles. Viruses appear in the fluid from time to time over a period of several weeks. This probably represents a carrier state of the virus in L cells. Many of the L cells in infected cultures are not killed by the virus infection.

New evidence is presented to clarify to some extent the significance of the gradient of rhythmicity in the small intestine of the unanesthetized dog. The gradient of rhythmicity was studied on five dogs prepared with duodenal fistulas. Rhythmic contractions were recorded from the small intestine by a small rubber balloon. The gradient of rhythmicity was found to decrease in a stepwise manner as the distance from the pylorus is increased. Roughly, the rhythmic contractions were found to be 18 to 19 per minute in the duodenum and 14 to 15 per minute in the ileum. In the terminal ileum there …

SUCCESS well beyond what was anticipated has been achieved in a two year trial of a modified version of the rabbit "killer" method.

In the "killer" method, trained officers are employed to kill rabbits instead of to inspect and supervise the activities of farmers and, in fact, these officers do all the actual work of destruction.

This system was advocated by the W.A. Royal Commission which reported on Vermin Control in this State in 1944, and it was used successfully in New Zealand.

Farmers have usually found the destruction of galahs damaging standing crops and bagged, or stored grain, fairly difficult.

Past methods of boiling grain and adding sweetened substances are rather laborious and require a lot of time.

Now, a quick and relatively simple method is available to farmers, using paraffin oil to adhere poison to the grain.

THE annual report of the Agriculture Protection Board of W.A. for 1958-1959 indicated that while vermin control had continued at a relatively high standard throughout the State, most of the animal and bird pests were at the lowest level within the memory of most people.

However, there were ample warnings that any relaxation in control work could have rapid and serious consequences.

Rehmannia glutinosa, Atractylus ovata, and Polygonatum chinense have all been employed by the Chinese as oral antidiabetic agents and reported by Min (1928), Kin (1931), and Li et al. (1936) to possess hypoglycemic activity. This prompted the pharmacological studies of these herbs.

Materials and methods. Their pharmacognosy was condensed from all available Chinese and scientific literature. Preliminary chemical and physical analyses included determinations for moisture, ash, crude fat, carbohydrates, protein, phosphorus, pH, alkaloids, melting point, and spectroscopy.
