Metcalf-Hatch Campaign

The Metcalf-Hatch Act forces tax supported pounds and shelters to turn over unwanted cats and dogs to New York laboratories. This creates difficulties for shelters/pounds. People who are aware of Metcalf-Hatch (MH) will tend to abandon animals rather than risk having them recycled into labs. And this places additional tax burdens on communities for rounding up abandoned strays. The cost of stray animals is already $400 million a year in the USA.

It has been shown previously that a root surface which has been scaled, root planed and demineralized by topical application of citric acid in vitro, is dominated by exposed collagen fibrils. The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanism of healing and possible reattachment of soft periodontal connective tissue to the root planed and subsequently acid treated root surfaces and to determine whether new collagen fibrils produced in the connective tissue could attach to these exposed fibrils.

For the past decade, evidence has accumulated which suggests that the resistance of the teeth to dental decay is in part under systemic control. It was shown that the resistance is accomplished through the optimal operation of a dentinal fluid transport mechanism which is believed to be hormonally controlled by the hypothalamic-parotid gland endocrine axis. Although circumstantial evidence for such an endocrine function was strong, the isolation of a parotid hormone which stimulates the dentinal fluid transport mechanism remained to be accomplished.

Using modern biochemical techniques, a methodology was designed to isolate and purify the hormone from porcine parotid glands. …

It has been concluded from this study that nerve fibers in the superior laryngeal nerves have an influence on the development of C-cells in the mouse thyroid. This conclusion is based on the results of two types of investigation. The first is an analysis of the effect of age on the number of C-cells and the second is an investigation of the influence of denervation and hemithyroid-parathyroidectomy on the age related changes in C-cells numbers.

The possible effects of ablastin, a reproduction-inhibiting antibody which is produced during the infection of the blood parasite, Trypanosoma musculi in the mouse, were investigated by fractionating the parasite into a supernatant fraction (designated as Group A test mice) and a pellet fraction (Group B test mice). These groups A and B mice were injected with the respective fractions, plus Freund’s Complete Adjuvant (FCA). Control mice were injected with FCA only. Human Placental Alkaline Phosphatase And Steroid Metabolism By Rat Adrenals, Allen G. Meier

Human placental alkaline phosphatase was purified by butanol extraction, methanol precipitation and chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. The pH optimum was found to be 10.9. The enzyme was competitively inhibited by di-ethyl-p-nitrobenzyl-phosphonate and copper sulfate. An increase in enzymatic activity occurred in the presence of the phosphate ion (HPO₄) and ATP.

The enzyme was crystallized from a 40% saturated solution of ammonium sulfate and shown to be homogeneous by sedimentation analysis. Homogeneity of the enzyme was also demonstrated using poly-acrylamide-gel-electrophoresis. At a pH of 7.5% the electrophoretic pattern yielded a single band and showed no significant contamination.

Endodontic therapy was evaluated as a possible control or prevention modality of radiation type dental caries in dogs. Two adult male dogs with permanent dentitions had endodontic therapy performed on alternating teeth in each jaw. The nontreated teeth served as controls.

The dogs were irradiated with 7000 rad Cobalt-60 radiation fractionated over an eight week period. The dogs were killed at 60 and 182 days post-irradiation. The teeth were removed from the jaws and immersed in methylene blue dye, sectioned, and the dye penetration pattern photographed. Diffusion of the dye into the tooth structure was quantified and statistically analyzed.

This study compared the ability of three different bone growth factor combinations with that of Ca(OH)₂ to stimulate apical closure as well as the effectiveness of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) as an apical barrier. Fifty-six roots of second and fourth mandibular premolars of seven six- month old beagle dogs were used. Periradicular lesions were created over a four week period. The canals were cleaned and shaped and filled with Ca(OH)₂ for one week. They were then irrigated and received one of seven different treatments in a balanced design. In April and May, 1977, 397 (14 species) amphibians were collected from southwestern and central West Virginia and examined for parasites. Five species of trematodes and two species of cestodes were found from 93 hosts. The total of 397 amphibians was subdivided, for convenience, into six categories of amphibians; aquatic male and female, terrestro-aquatic male and female, and terrestrial male and female. Nine of 24 (37.5%). female aquatic amphibians was the highest incidence found, while terrestro-aquatic females contained the highest mean number (6.0) worms per incidence, and parasite loads of host. Hosts, each platyhelminth specimen are given.

The possible effects of ablastin on Schistosoma mansoni were investigated by (1) establishing a concurrent infection of Trypanosoma musculi and Schistosoma mansoni in mice, and (2) by obtaining Trypanosoma lewisi immune rat serum (ablastin) and injecting it into S. mansoni infected mice. These procedures were followed on days 4, 14 and 28 of S. mansoni infection. For the groups that were given immune rat serum, controls were kept into which normal rat serum was injected.

Ablastin does not have any effect on the development or morphology of the S. mansoni worms as tested in this study. Although ablastin inhibits glycolytic …

Hypothalamic and cortical extracts from various cariogenically grouped rats which had been maintained on either a Purina diet or a high sucrose diet (HSD) for three months were infused intravenously into 28 days old rats to determine if there was a titer of parotid hormone releasing factor (PRF) capable of facilitating fluid movement (FM) in the teeth. The hypothalamic and cortical extracts obtained from Purina-fed rats with 0-caries and the hypothalamic extracts from BSD-fed rats conclusively demonstrated FM stimulatory ability. Other Purina-fed groups were essentially biologically ineffective, however, extracts from HSD-fed caries groups including scores 11-40 demonstrated extremely potent FM …

Four Stump-tail monkeys (Macaca spiciosa) were used for this study to analyze, on a cellular level, the apical tissue of teeth overfilled versus teeth filled short 1-3 mm. of the radiographic apex with the Sargenti formula. In each animal four incisors were filled short and four incisors were overfilled. A final sample size consisted of 28 teeth. The time periods ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. After analysis of the histology it can be stated that the teeth filled short showed no inflammation to moderate inflammation in the periapical tissues. Determination Of Lead Content In Apical Tissue Following Root Canal Obturation With Sargenti's Formula, G. Merle Hickok

Four Stump-tail monkeys were used to help determine if the lead in Sargenti's formula diffuses out into the apical tissue while confined entirely within the root canal. In each animal two teeth were filled with Sargenti's formula 1-2 millimeters short of the radiographic apex, and two teeth were filled with gutta percha and Proco-Sol sealer for controls, making a total sample size of sixteen. The time ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. Lead analysis using the spectrophotometric method showed a higher lead content in the teeth filled with Sargenti's formula than with the gutta percha controls.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of insulin and fluoride on dentinal fluid movement (FM) in high-sucrose fed rats as mediated through the hypothalamic-parotid gland endocrine axis. In conjunction with the fluoride study, the possible involvement of cAMP was examined through the use of several methyl xanthines which are recognized as phosphodiesterase inhibitors.

Biological and ecological factors regulating diapause in the ichneumonid parasite of the alfalfa weevil, Bathyplectes curculionis (Thomson), were studied. In most experiments, both parasites and weevil larvae were maintained in the environmental conditions under study from the emergence of the adult parasite until the evaluation of results.

The factors either preventing or inducing diapause in B. curculionis were found to be an interaction of environmental factors. A long scotophase with cool temperatures prevented diapause. The percentage of nondiapausing parasites increased as the scotophase was increased to 15 hours. Over 15 hours of scotophase, fewer nondiapausing parasites were produced. The optimum …

The effects of morphine and codeine free-choice alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. Intakes of a 10% alcohol solution in milliliters per 100 gm. of body weight were on recorded weekly. No difference was found in the alcohol intake of rats given either a morphine-supplemented diet (0.01% of the diet) or daily injection of morphine sulfate (2 mg./kg.); however, there was a significant lower intake of water (p < .05) in those rats fed the diet with morphine. Total fluid consumption of both groups given the morphine-supplemented diet and daily injection of morphine sulfate was decreased (p < .05). It was found that morphine did not affect the percentage of total fluid consumed as alcohol or the weight gain.

Two levels of codeine phosphate (10 mg./kg. and 20 mg./kg.) were injected subcutaneously into rats twice a day. It was observed that the codeine significantly decreased alcohol intake in rats …

In concurrent infections of Trichinella spiralis and Trypanosoma equiperdum, the survival times vary in the early stages of the Trichinella infection. On Days 1 and 4, the mean survival times are significantly increased, and on Days 3 and 7 they are markedly decreased. This decrease is probably due to intestinal tissue invasion. Mice infected with trypanosomes after the 7th day of the Trichinella infection have survival time increases to a significant point and a steady leveling off to Day 21. It is suggested that the antibodies produced against the Trichinella worms slow down multiplication of trypanosomes and increase the …

Nonendodontically treated roots were submerged 1.5 to 2.0 mm. below the alveolar crest in three dogs. Twelve roots were treated in this manner. Regeneration of alveolar bone can be seen in three weeks with complete bone coverage in five weeks. A complete lamina dura can be seen around the amputated roots.

Bone failed to regenerate over two of the twelve roots. In one case there was delayed healing due to the early loss of some sutures. A sinus tract developed connecting the oral environment with the contents of the pulp. This led to bone resorption and a necrotic pulp. In …

A preliminary light microscopic study of the mouse hind limb revealed a group of about 20 Pacinian corpuscles extending from the mid-region of the fibula to the tibio-fibular fusion strategically located for the possible sensing of bone-transmitted vibration.

The fine structure of the corpuscles is described in four stages: primordial or prenatal (19 and 20 days); early differentiation (1-8 days postnatal); differentiated corpuscle (9, 10, 12, 14 and 21 days postnatal); and adult (28 days old).

The corpuscles commence development during the 19th prenatal day. The corpuscle then consists of a nerve ending surrounded by sheath-cells which appear to be …

This study compared endodontic overfills of N₂ and gutta percha-Grossman's Sealer from a histopathological basis. The study employed four male rhesus monkeys and a sample of 31 teeth.

The most obvious difference between the samples filled with N₂ and the gutta percha-Grossman's Sealer samples was the recurring presence of ankylosis in the N₂-treated teeth. Results also included bone necrosis, inflammation and root and bone resorption.

The N₂ samples were considered to have evidenced greater violence of reaction apically.

Thus we find the Indians in Peru, Bolivia and other neighboring countries (Ecuador and northern part of Argentina) consuming alcohol to the point that they become alcoholics, in addition to this they also chew coca leaves, plant from which cocaine is extracted.

Before the Department of Agriculture's Medina Pig Research Station was established in 1964, pig production research had been carried out on Denmark Research Station, Muresk Agricultural College and in some commercial herds.

However, with increasing specialisation in the pig industry better facilities were needed. Medina Research Station provides such facilities, allowing it to carry out research to provide detailed information of immediate practical value for both extensive and intensive pig production enterprises.
