Este trabajo plantea una evaluación de prioridad biológica para la conservación de aves en la región sur de Tamaulipas, México. La metodología empleada fue la técnica Evaluación Rápida de Prioridad Biológica (ERPBIO). Esta permite determinar las principales zonas y grupos a conservar en flora y fauna para amplias zonas de estudio de manera rápida y precisa. La región sur de Tamaulipas comprende los municipios de Aldama, Altamira, Ciudad Madero, González y Tampico, con una superficie total de 8,969.05 km2. El Parque Nacional Malintzi comprende una superficie de 45,852 hectáreas, de las cuales corresponden 14,544 al estado de Puebla. Los conglomerados humanos, presentan espacios públicos abiertos (EPA´s), sobre todo arbolados, con funciones estéticas, sociales y ambientales. Se requiere información e indicadores con un enfoque ecológico, para que su atención descanse sobre una planeación documentada. Así, se pretende conocer la composición arbórea, su distribución y la biodiversidad en los Espacios Públicos Abiertos (EPA´s) de la Zona de Monumentos del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de Puebla (ZMCHP). Despite their importance, the dynamics of urban floras are not well understood and quantitative historical data are rare. The current study used three data sets for trees in Indianapolis/Marion County, Indiana, U.S., to document change over 200 years to the original beech-maple forest and to examine future implications of contemporary tree planting efforts in light of these changes. Data on tree composition and size collected before significant settlement in the early 1800s are compared with recent surveys of trees in remnant natural areas and with trees found on city streets and rights-of-way. The vascular flora of Boyle County, Kentucky, was conducted from March 2013 to March 2015. Boyle County is located in central Kentucky and is part of the Bluegrass Physiographic Section. A total of 127 families, 392 genera, and 722 species, varieties, and subspecies were documented from Boyle County. Twelve plant communities were described: acidic mesophytic forest, acidic sub-xeric forest, acidic xeric forest, Bluegrass woodland, bottomland ridge/terrace forest, calcareous mesophytic forest, calcareous sub-xeric forest, depression pond/mudflat, dry limestone cliff/outcrops, riparian forest, wet prairie/meadow, and one rare state-listed plant community, the shale/siltstone glade. A Comparison Of Management Strategies For The Federally Endangered Running Buffalo Clover (Trifolium Stoloniferum) On The Blue Grass Army Depot, Ky, Alexi David Dart-Padover

Running buffalo clover (Trifolium stoloniferum) is a federally endangered plant that appears to depend on habitat disturbance, although proposed management strategies such as cattle grazing, mowing, and herbicide application have never been compared in a controlled study. We evaluate the efficacy of these techniques on the Blue Grass Army Depot (BGAD) in Madison County, KY, where one of T. stoloniferum’s largest populations occurs. Fifty-nine patches of T. stoloniferum on the BGAD were treated annually between 2012 and 2014 with combinations of mowing and grass-specific herbicide. Reducing lignin concentration in lignocellulosic biomass can increase forage digestibility for
ruminant livestock and saccharification yields of biomass for bioenergy. In sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and several other C4 grasses, brown midrib (bmr) mutants have been shown to reduce lignin concentration. Putative bmr mutants isolated from an EMS-mutagenized population were characterized and classified based on their leaf midrib phenotype and allelism tests with the previously described sorghum bmr mutants bmr2, bmr6, and bmr12. Most African countries are far from self-sufficient in meeting their rice consumption; in eight countries the production: consumption ratio, ranged from 0.16 to 1.18 in 2012. We show that for the year 2025, with population growth, diet change and yield increase on existing land (intensification), countries cannot become fully self-sufficient in rice. This implies that for the future, a mixture of area expansion and imports will be needed on top of yield gap closure. Further research is needed for identification of most suitable new land for rice area expansion and areas that should be protected.

Patch burning can be a potential management tool to create grassland heterogeneity and enhance forage productivity and plant biodiversity, but its impacts on soil and environment have not been widely documented. In summer 2013, we studied the effect of time after patch burning (4 mo after burning [recently burned patches], 16 mo after burning [older burned patches], and unburned patches [control]) on vegetative cover, water erosion, and soil properties on a patch-burn experiment established in 2011 on a Yutan silty clay loam near Mead, NE. En el presente trabajo se realizó un análisis sobre la percepción de calidad de vida, contaminación y riesgo en nueve comunidades rurales del Municipio de Tecoanapa, Guerrero. Para ello, se seleccionaron nueve comunidades que cumplieran con tres aspectos: rezago social (muy alto, medio y muy bajo); ubicación (cerca de ríos); y vivencias en conflictos y embates ambientales. Se levantó una encuesta a jefes de familia en febrero de 2014. Registrando que el 70% de los habitantes afirmaron tener una buena calidad de vida. Existen muy pocos trabajos etnobotánicos realizados en la Reserva de la Biosfera Barranca de Metztitlán, por lo que el objetivo de este estudio fue generar un listado preliminar de plantas útiles de la Reserva. Se aplicaron entrevistas a habitantes de localidades ubicadas en la zona, para colectar las plantas útiles mencionadas se hicieron recorridos de campo en compañía de informantes, posteriormente las especies fueron identificadas con el uso de claves dicotómicas. Se registraron 83 especies de plantas útiles, distribuidas en 39 familias y 20 categorías de uso, siendo la medicinal la mejor representada por número de especies. Conocer el uso …

Investigating The Effect Of Stratospheric Radiation On Seed Germination And Growth, B. N. Fong, K. V. Newhouse, M. J. Huss, E. Roberts, J. T. Kennon, H. Ali

Three seed types: bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), corn (Zea mays) and radish (Raphanus sativus) were flown in a high altitude weather balloon into the mid-stratosphere to investigate the effects of high altitude radiation on germination success and seedling growth. After recovering and planting the seeds, the bean seeds showed lower germination success with exposure to high altitude radiation, and consequently stunted seedling growth. Cord and radish seeds experienced a statistically significant positive effect on germination success form radiation exposure compared to control seeds, but negative effect on seedling growth. Arkansas Endemic Flora And Fauna An Update With 13 Additional Species, H. W. Robison, C. T. Mcallister
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Arkansas supports a diverse variety of endemic biota with most found in the Interior Highlands (Ozarks and Ouachitas) of the state. Since 1988, several compilations have updated the number of endemics known while some former endemic species have been found in other states and subsequently removed from the state list. Here, update to the list by adding 13 taxa, several of which are fish parasites, making a grand total of 139 current endemic species in Arkansas.

County distribution in Utah is given for each species and infraspecific taxon. General geographical information is given for taxa that extend beyond the boundaries of Utah. As enthusiasts who enjoy native plants in natural habitats, we tend to focus on gross morphology— aspects of plant form that can be readily observed with the naked eye or with a hand lens. And there is plenty to see at the gross level. The Flora of Virginia contains 1,269 pages of keys and descriptions devoted to gross morphology of the commonwealth’s botanical treasures. Native tallgrass prairie is becoming increasingly rare due to conversion and degradation, putting pressure on endemic prairie species such as the federally threatened Dakota skipper butterfly (Hesperia dacotae). To develop a conservation plan for the butterfly in South Dakota, accurate vegetation classification, mapping, and characterization are critical. The idea that dominant invasive plant species outperform neighboring native species through higher rates of carbon assimilation and growth is supported by several analyses of global datasets. However, theory suggests that native and invasive species occurring in low-resource environments will be functionally similar, as environmental factors restrict the range of observed physiological and morphological trait values. We measured resource-use traits in native and invasive plant species across eight diverse vegetation communities distributed throughout the five Mediterranean-climate regions, which are drought-prone and increasingly threatened by human activities including the introduction of exotic species. Fusarium head blight (FHB), mainly caused by Fusarium graminearum, is a devastating disease of wheat that results in economic losses worldwide. During infection, F. graminearum produces trichothecene mycotoxins, including deoxynivalenol (DON), that increase fungal virulence and reduce grain quality. Transgenic wheat expressing a barley UDP-glucosyltransferase (HvUGT13248) were developed and evaluated for FHB resistance, DON accumulation, and the ability to metabolize DON to the less toxic DON-3-O-glucoside (D3G). Pointinoculation tests in the greenhouse showed that transgenic wheat carrying HvUGT13248 exhibited significantly higher resistance to disease spread in the spike (type II resistance) compared with nontransformed controls. Pilosella ilgazensis Vladimirov, Coşkunçelebi & Kit Tan, a new diploid (2n = 2x = 18) species from Ilgaz Mountain National Park, North Anatolia, Turkey, is described and illustrated. It grows in subalpine grassland and open Juniperus sibirica Burgsd. communities. Pilosella ilgazensis is morphologically intermediate between P. alpicola s.l., from the high mountains of Central and Southeast Europe, and the Euro-Asiatic Pilosella echioides s.l. The relationship of the species with other similar taxa is discussed. The name Hieracium leontocephalum Halácsy, from a morphologically similar taxon from the Balkan Peninsula, is lectotypified, and a new generic combination, Pilosella leontocephala (Halácsy) Vladimirov, Coşkunçelebi …

Utilization of diverse germplasm is required to enhance the genetic variability of cultivars. Opportunity to generate favorable gene combinations can be provided by genetically diverse lines; thus, the probability of creating unique cultivars increases. Genetic diversity analysis of chickpea can give important indications for understanding species relationships and may help in developing and planning breeding programs. This paper reports the morphological characters of 18 Iranian species of the genus Alchemilla using light and scanning electron microscopy. The pollen grains are monad, radially symmetrical, isopolar, or subisopolar; small to medium in size; tri- and tetracolporate; rectangular to cylindrical (from equatorial view) and triangular to circular (from polar view) in outline; and prolate-spheroidal to subprolate and prolate in shape. The exine ornamentation is psilate and microechinate. Based on the exine sculpturing and microechinate distribution pattern, three main types, four subtypes, and two categories of pollen grains were recognized.
