Seed Micromorphology In Dactylorhiza Necker Ex Nevski (Orchidaceae) And Allied Genera, Roberto Gamarra, Pablo Galan, Henrik Aerenlund Pedersen, Emma Ortunez, Ernesto Sanz

Seeds of 21 taxa of the genera Dactylorhiza (incl. Coeloglossum), Gymnadenia (incl. Nigritella) and Pseudorchis were examined by light microscope and SEM. Qualitative and quantitative characters were analyzed. In Dactylorhiza, the seeds are fusiform, but some populations of D. viridis show clavate seeds. According to the ornamentation of the periclinal walls, 3 types of seeds are recognized in this genus. The considerable variation in the seed coat ornamentation pattern in the taxa belonging to majalis, maculata, and praetermissa groups of the genus Dactylorhiza is congruent with the genetic processes that occurred during the history of this genus. The current research aimed to evaluate the possible impacts of foliar supplementations of selenium (Se) and/or ascorbic acid (AsA) on basil. Seedlings were foliarly treated with 4 concentrations of Se (0, 30, 60, and 120 mg L-1) and/or 2 levels of AsA (0 and 200 mg L-1), 2 times with 2-week intervals. In contrast to Se30, chla contents were significantly decreased by Se120 compared with the control. Se applications had a reducing effect on chlb contents. Se and/or AsA treated plants exhibited higher contents of carotenoid. The antioxidative system was affected by the applied treatments as it was indicated by …

The aim of the current study was to reveal the syntaxonomical structure of Pinus brutia Ten. Forests and the preforest communities in the vicinity of Antalya Gulf. Of the preforest communities, Dorsytaecho hastatae-Oleutum oleastri ass. Nova is individualized as a paraclimax association. Although little is known about the syntaxonomy of the communities of cliff, rupicolous, and mural communities in the thermomediterranean zone, these are connected with the classes Asplenietea trichomanis (Br.-Bl. A survey of both ectomycorrhizal (ECM) root tips and fruiting bodies of ECM fungi was carried out during a four-year period (2009-2012) in two similar forest stands in central Italy, previously investigated in detail being habitats of the Italian white truffle Tuber magnatum Pico. This research is one of the few conducted in mixed forest stands and, for the first time, it took into account the cryptic fungi (corticiaceous, hypogeous, and sclerotia). Lyophyllum Turcicum (Agaricomycetes: Lyophyllaceae), A New Species From Turkey, Ertuğrul Sesli̇, Alfredo Vizzini, Marco Contu

A new species, Lyophyllum turcicum, from the Kümbet plateau of the Dereli district in Giresun Province, Turkey, is described, taxonomically delimited, and illustrated based on morphological and molecular data. The new species belongs to a small group of species in the Lyophyllum sect. Difformia as traditionally circumscribed. Lyophyllum turcicum is easily distinguished mainly by the light tinges of the basidiomes, filiform-fusiform to cylindro-flexuose marginal cells, and elongate, ellipsoid spores.

In plants, pyrophosphate (PPi), generated in a wide range of reversible anabolic reactions, is hydrolyzed by pyrophosphatases. The presence of tonoplast- and Golgi-integral H+-translocating pyrophosphatases in plants led to the conclusion that plant cytosol has no soluble pyrophosphatase activity. However, the Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. Genome also encodes five soluble pyrophosphatase isoforms (Ppas). There are almost no data in the literature on their redundancy in plant metabolism; therefore, we performed expression analyses of A. Thaliana soluble pyrophosphatase isoforms in response to external stimuli including carbohydrate status, hormone action, and stress exposure. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of nutritional formulations, viz. Bristol's medium (BM), water extract of dairy waste (DW), commercial fertilizers mix (FM), and carbon sources such as NaHCO3, CaCO3, and wheat flour hydrolysate on the biomass productivity and oil content of the algal species Sirogonium sticticum, Temnogyra reflexa, Uronema elongatum, and Chroococcus turgidus. Among the nutritional formulations tested, BM showed the highest average effect, followed by DW, on the biomass and oil contents of the species. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to examine the alleviating role of thiourea (TU) on antioxidants and some vital physiological attributes in salt-stressed plants of two maize cultivars. The maize cv. DK 5783 performed better than cv. Apex 836 in an initial experiment. Of the six TU levels used in the initial experiment, 400 and 500 mg L-1 were chosen for subsequent studies. Several attempts have been made to increase its production by altering the expression of different genes. However, no approach has been cost-effective. In this study, the expression levels of SQS and DBR2 genes were quantified by qRT-PCR, and artemisinin content was measured by HPLC in Artemisia annua cell suspension culture under nano cobalt particles elicitation. Differentially responding genotypes are comparatively used to understand mechanisms of metal tolerance in higher plants. The feasibility of the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was evaluated to screen for metal tolerance within plants as an alternative to physiological growth parameters. Eight hydroponically grown barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes were exposed to different concentrations (75, 150, and 225 μM) of cadmium and copper for 7 days and subsequently harvested for determining metal tolerance indices by comparing dry biomass to genomic template stabilities based on their RAPD profiles. This paper presents a taxonomic contribution to the genus Pyrus L. P. Georgica and P. Pseudosyriaca are reported from Turkey for the first time. The status of P. Pseudosyriaca is discussed and it is treated as a new variety of Pyrus syriaca. Notes on the chorology, morphological descriptions, figures, and taxonomy are provided. Moreover, P. Serikensis and P. Boissieriana are reduced to synonyms of P. Cordata. An endemic subspecies, P. Elaeagrifolia subsp. Kotschyana, is compared with the related species P. Identification of vacuolar Na+/H+ antiporters facilitates the basis of salt stress tolerance mechanisms. Na+ accumulation into the vacuole is crucial for the avoidance of cytoplasmic Na+ toxicity. In this study, we show that the introduction of AtNHX1 into tobacco generated more tolerant plants when compared to wild-type plants. Transgenic tobacco plants exhibited higher germination rates in the presence of increasing salt concentrations compared to wild-type plants. In addition, proline levels were higher under salt stress conditions in both the shoots and the roots of transgenics compared to wild-type plants. In North Africa, Allium roseum L. Has been treated as a polymorphic species comprising 12 different taxa. More than 80 individuals in the Allium roseum complex were sampled from 20 populations at different localities in Tunisia and investigated karyologically. Basic chromosome number was confirmed as x = 8. Three cytotypes, diploid (2n = 2x = 16), triploid (2n = 3x = 24), and tetraploid (2n = 4x = 32), were found. It is well documented that the homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-Zip) transcription factors play diverse roles during plant growth and development. The Class I HD-Zip genes are shown to be involved in the regulation of abiotic stress responses and tolerance. Herein, a novel Class I HD-Zip gene, EsHD1, was isolated from Eutrema salsugineum, and an investigation was performed of its physiological functions in response to drought stress. The analyses of gene expression profiles revealed that the EsHD1 transcripts quickly accumulated upon exposure to various abiotic stress conditions or abscisic acid treatments. Two drought-tolerant transgenic rice lines, L-8 (single copy) and L-23 (two copy), expressing the Capsicum annuum methionine sulfoxide reductase B2 (CaMsrB2) gene were selected for stress tolerance phenotyping under drought stress conditions. The two transgenic lines were selected on the basis of laboratory experiments and for performing well against drought. Iron (Fe) deficiency is one of the major yield-limiting factors in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), especially when grown in calcareous soils. The soils of the Pothwar region in Pakistan are calcareous in nature, exposing peanut to Fe deficiency. Local adaptation is characterized by higher reproductive fitness by individuals present in their native habitats relative to nonlocals. This study utilized Campanulastrum americanum as a model for assessing whether an environmental gradient can facilitate local adaptation. In particular, I determined if a latitudinal gradient across eastern United States has influenced the phenology and reproductive fitness of five northern and four southern C, americanum populations. These populations were reciprocally transplanted into two common garden sites positioned in the most northern and southern extent of the species distribution: Hastings, MI and Columbus, GA. Bacterial Auxin Signaling: Comparative Study Of Growth Induction In Arabidopsis Thaliana And Triticum Aestivum, Basharat Ali

Auxin-producing rhizobacteria were evaluated for the role of their auxin signaling in enhancing the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. and Triticum aestivum L. Arabidopsis thaliana wild type Columbia (Col-0) in comparison with phytohormone mutant lines aux1-7 (insensitive to auxin and ethylene), axr4-1 (insensitive to auxin), and eir1-1 (insensitive to ethylene) was used as a model system. Bacterization of wild type Col-0 recorded significant increases in shoot length (38%) and number of siliqua (180%) with Bacillus subtilis TpP-1 over the controls. Inoculation with aux1-7 and axr4-1 showed statistically comparable results for growth parameters as compared to their respective controls. Treatment …

Lectotypes are selected for Andersonia R.Br (Ericaceae) and eight taxa within the genus: A. aristata Lindl. A. brevifolia Sond., A. heterophylla Sond., A. involucrata Sond., A. sprengelioides R.Br., A. lehmanniana subsp. lehmanniana (Sond.)L.Watson and A. lehmanniana subsp. pubescens (Sond.)L.Watson. Andersonia patens Sond. is lectotypified in synonymy with A. sprengelioides.

In the present study, chromosome morphology of 32 Scorzonera L. Taxa, including 19 species endemic to Turkey, was analyzed. The plant materials were collected from different natural populations of Turkey between 2005 and 2011. The classification of chromosomes, the length of the long and short arm, haploid chromosome length, arm ratio, and relative chromosomal length were measured by software image analyses. The basic chromosome numbers were determined as x = 6 and x = 7. Two types of ploidy levels were observed as diploidy and tetraploidy. Nitrogen management for corn (Zea mays L.) may be improved by applying a portion of N in-season. This investigation was conducted to evaluate crop modeling (Maize-N) and active crop canopy sensing approaches for recommending in-season N fertilizer rates. These approaches were evaluated during 2012–2013 on 11 field sites, in Missouri, Nebraska, and North Dakota. Nitrogen management also included a no-N treatment (check) and a non-limiting N reference (all at planting). The Cedars Natural Area Preserve supports ex ceptional natural communities including rocky, dry limestone glades and woodlands located across nearly 20 square miles in Lee County near the Powell River. The karst landscape, where thin soils develop over easily dissolved limestone bedrock, creates terrain that tends to be rolling, rocky, rugged, and full of sinkholes, caves, and sinking streams. Monochoria C. Presl, an extreme morphological variable genus, belongs to an aquatic plant family, Pontederiaceae. According to the Flora of Thailand, there are 3 monotypic species, i.e. M. elata Ridl., M. hastata (L.) Solms and M. vaginalis (Burm.f.) C. Presl ex Kunth. Previously, their morphological plasticity led to ambiguous identification and classification of the species members. This research was designed to clarify taxonomic status and species boundary of the genus. The purpose of this study was to determine physiological differences in drought response among Garry oak (Quercus garryana Douglas ex Hook. [Fagaceae]) seedlings that grow in distinct populations in Washington state, in order to aid in restoration efforts by informing growers of the potential differences between the acorn collection sites. Acorns from six Washington populations east of the Cascades, as well as one population from Whidbey Island, were collected and grown in containers under controlled conditions. Our previous research defined two tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) genotypes: high cadmium (Cd) accumulator YSL189 and low Cd accumulator HZ903. Further hydroponics experiments investigated the different tolerance mechanisms to Cd stress between YSL189 and HZ903 at the seedling stage. When Cd concentration was >20 µM in the growing medium, the uptake rate of Cd was significantly higher in roots of YSL189 than it was in roots of HZ903. When plants were supplied with 50 and 100 µM Cd in the growing medium, there were higher Cd concentration, higher biomass and plant height, shorter roots, and higher expression levels of transporter genes …
