Vigna unguiculata is an important food legume crop in the semiarid tropics. It suffers from a host of agricultural constraints including damage due to diseases and pests. Judicious application of biotechnological methods can lead to considerable improvement in this important crop. Shoot regeneration from unsliced and longitudinally sliced cotyledon node explants obtained from 3-day-old to 5-day-old seedlings grown in vitro was achieved on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1.11, 2.22, 3.33, and 4.44 \muM benzylaminopurine (BA) supplemented with 1.0 mg/L polyvinylpyrrolidone and 500 mg/L bacteriostatic Augmentin. Two New Species Of Cephalaria (Caprifoliaceae) From Turkey, Ramazan Süleyman Göktürk, Hüseyi̇n Sümbül, Ayten Çelebi̇, Leyla Açik

Two new Cephalaria Schrad. ex Roem. et Schult. species (Caprifoliaceae) from Turkey, Cephalaria davisiana Göktürk & Sümbül and Cephalaria sumbuliana Göktürk, are described and illustrated. A map showing their distribution and other related taxa is given. The morphological differences of the 2 new species are discussed and comparisons are made with the similar Cephalaria speciosa Boiss. & Kotschy and Cephalaria elmaliensis Hub.-Mor. & V.A.Matthews. In addition to morphological observations, C. davisiana, C. sumbuliana, C. elmaliensis, and C. speciosa were analysed by applying RAPD-PCR techniques. RAPD methods clearly distinguished between the new species and the 2 species that they resemble.

Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae pollen represents an allergenic risk for pollen-sensitive people. The aim of this study was to describe the Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae pollen dynamics in the atmosphere of Salamanca (mid-west Spain) during the years 2000-2007. Measurements were performed by the volumetric method using a Burkard spore trap located in the urban centre at the height of 20 m above ground level. This pollen type was mainly detected in the atmosphere between late spring and late summer, with an Atmospheric Pollen Season (APS) registered between late May and early October and maximum concentrations detected in August. In Vitro Plant Regeneration Via Petiole Callus Of Viola Patrinii And Genetic Fidelity Assessment Using Rapd Markers, Gururaj Chalageri, Uddagiri Venkanna Babu

Viola patrinii DC. (Violaceae) petiole explants were used for inducing calli. Significant callus proliferation was observed on MS medium supplemented with 16.12 \muM NAA and 13.33 \muM BA. Shoot regeneration was achieved upon transferring the green friable calli to MS medium with a 2-fold dilution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate supplemented with 23.25 \muM Kn and 2.68 \muM NAA. Maximum shoot regeneration was achieved in 4 weeks. Multiple shoots were separated and further cultured in half-strength MS medium supplemented with 9.85 \muM IBA with 2% sucrose. Ecological Aspects Of The Arid And Semi-Arid Truffle In Turkey: Evaluation Of Soil Characteristics, Morphology, Distribution, And Mycorrhizal Relationships, Mehmet Akyüz, Sevda Kirbağ, Murat Kurşat

We undertook an evaluation of the physical and chemical quality of soil characteristics, micro- and macroscopic features of morphology, distribution, and mycorrhizal relationships of Terfezia boudieri Chatin. The topsoil was found to be 54.73% sand, 21.97% clay, 23.30% dust, 45.27% dust-clay, 0.126% nitrogen, 1.848% organic matter, and 3.78% total lime. Investigations revealed that the soil contained 40.92 ppm P_2O_5, 613.0 ppm K_2O, 28.82 ppm Na, and 0.164 mmhos/cm salt. It had a pH of 7.12 and the soil type was determined to be sand-clay-slimy. Capnobotryella Isiloglui, A New Rock-Inhabiting Fungus From Austria, Hacer Bakir Sert, Michael Wuczkowski, Katja Sterflinger

A new rock-inhabiting fungal taxon was isolated from St. Margarethen Church in Vienna, Austria. Based on small subunit and internal transcribed regions of rDNA sequencing, the new taxon was described as Capnobotryella isiloglui Sert & Sterflinger. The type culture of the taxa is in the ACBR culture collection (Vienna, Austria, MA 3619, EMBL Accession Number: AM746201.1).

A new genus (Pseudodelphinium H.Duman, Vural, Aytaç & Adıgüzel) and 3 new species (Pseudodelphinium turcicum H.Duman, Vural, Aytaç & Adıgüzel; Iberis halophila Vural & H.Duman; and Frankenia salsuginea Adıgüzel & Aytaç) from the Tuz Gölü (Salt Lake) basin (Central Anatolia) are described. Illustrations, ecological habit, and a distribution map are given. The relationships of the new genus and species are discussed in terms of related taxa.

Marrubium sivasense Aytaç, Akgül & Ekici sp. nova (Lamiaceae) is described and illustrated from Central Anatolia, Turkey. The new species most resembles Marrubium depauperatum, but it differs by 3-10 flowered verticillasters, crenate to crenulated leaf margins, and unequal calyx teeth. The ecology and phenology of the new species as well as its etymology, conservation status, and diagnostic features are discussed.

Allium shirnakiense L.Behçet & Rüstemoğlu sp. nova (sect. Melanocrommyum Webb & Berth.) is described as a species new to science on the basis of material collected from Şırnak Province. Morphologically, it is related to A. rhetoreanum Nab., which is an species endemic to South-eastern Turkey. A diagnosis, a taxonomic description, and some illustrations are given.

The present study describes the developmental features of the embryo sac and ovular structures, particularly the obturator, during development in Gagea bohemica (Zauschn.) Schult. & Schult. f. The nucellar epidermis is poorly developed and composed of 1-2 layers of cuboidal cells. The tissue at the chalazal end of the nucellus differentiates into a hypostase. The micropyle is formed by the inner integument and composed of 4-5 cell layers that include starch grains. The functional megaspore results in an 8-nucleated embryo sac and conforms to a tetrasporic, Fritillaria L. type. Cytoplasmic nucleoloids consisting of protein and RNA are obvious during megasporogenesis. …

The role of smoke as a fire-related germination cue is well known in many parts of the world, including Mediterranean-type ecosystems; however, it has been neglected in the Mediterranean Basin (MB). We studied the germination response of 5 woody species found in the eastern MB (south-western Turkey) to smoke solutions derived from different plant species. Of the 5 species examined, 2 [Sarcopoterium spinosum (L.) Cassia tora L. (CT) is a widely growing weed in India with medicinal value and has been reported to show allelopathic potential causing biological suppression on crops. The present study was conducted to observe its suppression on Brassica campestris L. (mustard). This study was conducted on the macrofungal specimens collected from Uşak in 2006^-2009. In field and laboratory studies, 100 taxa belonging to 30 families and 2 classes were identified. Ten taxa belong to Ascomycetes and 90 to Basidiomycetes. Seven of them, i.e. Pseudoplectania sphagnophila (Pers.) Kreisel, Conocybe pulchella (Velen.) Hauskn. & Svrcek, Entoloma politoflavipes Noordel. & Liiv, Entoloma saundersii (Fr.) Sacc., Entoloma serrulatum (Fr.) Hesler, Hygrophorus nemoreus (Pers.) Fr., and Rugosomyces ionides (Bull.) Bon, are new records for Turkey.

Fifteen species of corticioid fungi with heterobasidia are recorded from the forests in the middle of the Seversky Donets River basin (eastern Ukraine) from 2007 to 2011. Of them, 11 species are new to Ukraine. Allium saxatile M.Bieb. was collected from the north-western corner of European Turkey (Demirköy, Kırklareli) during the field survey of the "Yıldız Mountain Biosphere Project". It has been reported as a new record for the Turkish flora. A description based on the collected specimens, photographs of its habitat and flowering plants, map of the distribution area, and its karyotype are given.

Micromorphological and anatomical traits in relation to physiological characteristics were studied in the leaves of 4 mulberry (Morus sp.) cultivars (V_1, TR_{10}, S_{34}, and Mysore local) by scanning electron microscope. The results revealed that leaf thickness was lowest (124.42 ± 2.21 µm) in the TR_{10} genotype and highest in V_1 (263.77 ± 5.17 µm). Cultivar S_{34} ranked second in respect to leaf thickness (203.57 ± 1.98 µm), followed by Mysore local (127.94 ± 2.19 µm). Seasonal Variations In Phytoplankton Communities In Zayandeh-Rood Dam Lake (Isfahan, Iran), Masoumeh Shams, Saeed Afsharzadeh, Tahi̇r Atici

Variations in the phytoplankton of Zayandeh-Rood Dam Lake were studied seasonally from September 2005 to August 2006 at 4 different stations. A total of 112 species and 53 genera belonging to 6 divisions were identified. The species belonging to Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Euglenophyta, and Dinophyta were found frequently. Chrysophyta species were found in low numbers. Cyclotella meneghinina Kütz., a centric diatom, was the dominant species at all stations. The density of the phytoplankton was between 470 and 150,470 cells/cm^3. Samples were collected from different habitats (plankton, epipelon, epiphyton, and epilithon) at 20 stations situated on rivers and dam systems in the Tigris Basin between December 2004 and November 2005. Twenty-five new records were identified for the Turkish freshwater algae. They belong to the following divisions: 3 to Cyanobacteria, 1 to Rhodophya, 1 to Euglenozoa, 2 to Myzozoa, 1 to Ochrophyta, 9 to Chlorophyta, and 8 to Charophyta.

In this taxonomic study, myxomycetes of Tayfur Sökmen Campus (Hatay) were collected during 2010-2011. As a result of field and laboratory studies we reported 44 species of protosteliomycetes and myxomycetes. Three of these species (Diderma deplanatum Fr., Didymium megalosporum Berk & M.A.Curtis, and Lamproderma atrosporum Meyl.) are recorded for the first time from Turkey. Lamproderma atrosporum was treated with the moist chamber cultures method in the laboratory but Didymium megalosporum and Diderma deplanatum were determined naturally. The distribution, habitat, and collection numbers of the identified species are given.

Phytoremediation has been proposed as a low-cost, environmentally friendly alternative to clean highly contaminated sites. Phytoremediation using trees offer the advantage of metal immobilization (phytostabilization), high hydraulic pumping pressures, produce large plant biomass, absorption of total dissolved salts within their tissue, long life spans, less frequent irrigation and, a massive root system that helps soil attachment. This area is protected and is one of the important plant areas in Turkey. In the field and during laboratory studies 186 taxa belonging 2 divisions and 44 families were identified. Among them, 6 families and 10 species belong to Ascomycota, and 38 families and 186 species belong to Basidiomycota. Moreover, 4 taxa-Cortinarius aureifolius, Inocybe hygrophorus, Ramaria suecica, and Scytinostroma portentosum -were found in the Turkish mycobiota for the first time.

Fritillaria montana Hoppe ex W.D.J.Koch (Liliaceae) is a rare perennial geophyte growing in south-eastern Europe. In this research, lepiotaceous fungi belonging to the family Agaricaceae were collected and identified from the Iranian part of Caucasia. As a result of these investigations, 14 species belonging to 6 genera (Chlorophyllum Massee, Cystolepiota Singer, Lepiota (Pers.) Gray, Leucoagaricus Locq. ex Singer, Leucocoprinus Pat., and Macrolepiota Singer) were identified. Of the species identified, Chlorophyllum molybdites (G.Mey.) Massee, Cystolepiota seminuda (Lasch) Bon, Lepiota clypeolarioides Rea, Lepiota felina (Pers.) P.Karst., and Leucocoprinus ianthinus (Cooke) P.Mohr are new for Iranian fungus biota.

Scorzonera zorkunensis Coskuncelebi & S.Makbul (Asteraceae) is described and illustrated from Turkey. It grows on serpentine in alpine steppe vegetation together with several endemic Scorzonera L. species in southern Anatolia at altitudes of 2075-2100 m. It is morphologically similar to S. pisidica Hub.-Mor., but it differs in its habit and stem and leaf pubescence. Additionally, the size and micromorphological characters of the achenes and some anatomical traits of the leaves, stems, and roots are helpful in distinguishing these closely related taxa. We investigated the relationship between leaf age and trichome/stomata densities in the snake tomato (Trichosanthes cucumerina L.). In a second experiment, the effects of different salinity levels on trichome and stomatal densities and their micromorphology were investigated. The leaf age investigation utilised young, semiold, and old leaves, while the salinity study utilised 0, 60, 120, and 180 mM NaCl for the investigation. This research project was conducted to evaluate the use of different waste materials as potting media for the dwarf variety Dahlia hortensis 'Figaro.' A total of 10 treatments were used where each treatment, consisting of 9 plants, was replicated 3 times. We investigated the role of antioxidant compounds (e.g.,\alpha-tocopherol, phytochelatins, glutathione, and other non-protein thiols) in the cadmium (Cd) tolerance of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L. cv. Arak2811) seedlings exposed to different concentrations of Cd (0-100 \muM) for a week. A concentration- and tissue- dependent response to Cd was observed. Increasing Cd supply markedly reduced the dry weight of roots. Plants accumulated a substantial amount of Cd, especially in the roots. Levels of \alpha-tocopherol showed a significant increase with an increase in the concentration of Cd in leaves.
