On The Rediscovery Of Euphorbia Amygdaloides Subsp. Robbiae And Its Type, Levent Can, Osman Erol, Gill Challen, Orhan Küçüker

Euphorbia amygdaloides L. subsp. robbiae (Turrill) Stace was first collected by Mrs Mary Anne Robb. She collected a wild growing Euphorbia L. specimen in 1891 from an unknown locality near İstanbul, and carried this plant in a bonnet box to England. Since 1891, this well-known cultivated plant has not been collected from any wild locality. This paper reports the wild specimens from İstanbul with morphological detail. We also present the composite image illustrations of the specimen, and images of the type specimen. Drought stress is one of the most important yield-reducing factors in crop production. Sunflower, an oilseed crop, is severely affected by abiotic stress. In this study, 2 sunflower cultivars (Musala and Aydın) were evaluated in terms of various biochemical and physiological responses under 2 different polyethylene glycol-mediated drought stress conditions. Stress-determining parameters such as malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H_{2}O_{2}), and proline contents were determined. Both cultivars showed similar responses at osmotic potentials of both -0.4 and -0.8 MPa. Aydın was less affected than Musala under these stress conditions. Macrofungi Of Nakhchivan (Azerbaijan) Autonomous Republic, Hami̇de Seyi̇dova, Elşad Hüseyi̇n

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this article, an attempt has been made to establish the species composition of the macrofungi of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. A total of 73 species of macromycetes were registered, 2 belonging to the division Ascomycota and 71 to the division Basidiomycota. The trophic structure for the fungal species is as follows: 22 lignicolous and 51 terricolous. Fifty-three species were added to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic mycobiota; 8 species of them were added to the mycobiota of Azerbaijan as new records.

Peduncle anatomy was investigated in 20 species of Onobrychis Miller sect. Heliobrychis Bunge from Iran by light microscopy. Ten quantitative and qualitative characters were studied in the peduncle cross sections. Results showed that qualitative characters represent considerable variations within the section, some of which such as outline shape of the peduncle cross section, density of papillae on hair surface, and position of cavities in peduncles are taxonomically important characters to differ annual species from perennials in the section. Diatoms are an important group of aquatic ecosystems. To date, there have been many important algological studies in different river basins in Turkey. However, the use of diatoms in biomonitoring (according to diatom indices, Watanabe's or Van Dam's systems) is relatively new in Turkey. In the present study, 41 samples of epilithic diatoms were collected from 5 stations along Felent creek between June 2006 and February 2007 and a total of 117 diatom taxa were identified. As a part of a revisional study of Stachys L. sect. Eriostomum (Hoffmanns. & Link) Dumort. (Lamiaceae), 4 taxa [S. tymphaea Hausskn., S. thracica Davidov, S. cretica L. subsp. cretica, and S. cretica L. subsp. salviifolia (Ten.) Rech.f.] were recorded for the first time from Turkey. S. cretica subsp. trapezuntica Rech.f., which was described based on 3 syntypes [Bourgeau 695; Sintenis 3432 (designated here as the lectotype); Handel-Mazzetti 324] near Trabzon, had not been collected again since 1907. The relationship among antioxidant enzyme activities, such as iron-superoxide dismutase (FeSOD) and ascorbate-dependent peroxidase (AsA-POD), and phycocyanin, chlorophyll, total carotenoid, ascorbate contents, and lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels were investigated in Spirulina maxima SAG 84.79 in nitrate limited (10 mM), control (30 mM), and supplemented (50 mM) conditions. In the present study, extracellular nitrate and intracellular iron, magnesium, and copper levels were also investigated. Mycorrhizas play key roles in important ecosystem processes and functions. To enhance our understanding of the impact of mycorrhizal strategies on important foliar traits of host plants and their response to climate changes, we analysed 6 selected foliar traits among 54 plant species in 129 sampling sites of ascertained mycorrhizal types on the Tibetan Plateau based on their functional groups. A review of bryophyte dispersal studies over the last sixty years revealed that the role of gametophytic fragments in bryophyte population dynamics has not been adequately addressed. In this dissertation, I investigate the dispersal potential of wind blown bryophyte fragments on Adirondack alpine summits using a combination of field and laboratory methods.

The taxonomy of the genus Physaria (Brassicaceae) has been continually under revision as many species groups have proved difficult to resolve. Physaria intermedia (S. Watson) O'Kane Al-Shehbaz, has been a species whose circumscription has more recently been questioned and in need of clarification. The uncertainty surrounding the species stemmed from a combination of its geographical distribution, inhabiting two disjunct locations, as well as some minor differences in morphology that warranted a closer look. This study examined the long-term patterns in vascular plant composition on three islands in Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. It also tested the role of island biogeography in ecology as it analyzed the effectiveness of a land use plan implemented on the islands. Samplings were made on the islands in the summer of 2011 and were compared to earlier samplings in 1978, 1991, and 2001. The flora was observed and measured in 25 permanent plots that were established on the three islands in 1978. RNA interference (RNAi), a pathway capable of silencing genes, has until recently only been achievable in the laboratory by the use of one method, expression of inverted repeat sequences of DNA. These constructs generate a double-stranded RNA, which in turn induce post-transcriptional silencing of other genes that bear sequence homology with the transgene. This approach of targeted gene silencing is extremely useful for studying the function of genes and engineering new traits in both plants and animals. Phenolic compounds function as stress indicators because they accumulate to high levels in many plant tissues in response to a wide range of biotic and abiotic signals. These compounds are involved in pollen development, pollination, pollen germination, and pollen tube growth. The mature pollen grains of Spartium junceum L., Lagerstroemia indica L., Thuja orientalis L., and Petunia hybrida L. collected from control (less polluted) and polluted areas [mainly SO_2, NO_2, CO, hydrocarbons (HC), and airborne particulate material (APM)]. Assessment Of Morphological Variation In Irish Brassica Oleracea Species, Mohamed El-Esawi, Paula Bourke, Kieran Germaine, Renee Malone

This study aimed at assessing the morphological variation in 25 accessions of an Irish collection of Brassica oleracea using 44 morphological traits. The morphological traits showed a pronounced variation among accessions. Vegetative preflowering and maturity traits revealed higher variation than seedling traits. Of the 44 morphological descriptors used, 28 were significantly different and proved useful in examining diversity and differentiating among accessions studied. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed variation among accessions, where 87.24% of the total variation in the morphological data was separated on the first five components, indicating a high degree of correlation among traits studied. Intercropping cereal grains and legumes has potential as an alternative cool-season forage crop in low-input farming systems. The objectives of this study were to quantify the effects of density, species proportion, and nitrogen (N) supply on the biomass accumulation of field pea and spring oat grown as sole or intercrops. Greenhouse experiments were conducted using an additive series experimental design. Treatments included three fertilizer N rates and 20 density/proportion combinations in a randomized complete block with four replications. Aternanthera (Amaranthaceae) is a diverse genus (80-200 species) largely restricted to the American Tropics. With Pedersenia and Tidestromia, it makes up the Alternantheroid clade in Gomphrenoideae. Parsimony and Bayesian analyses of nucleotide sequences of nuclear (ITS) and plastid (rpl16, trnL-F) and morphological characters identify that the capitate stigma of Alternanthera is a synapomorpy within the Alternantheroids. Within Alternanthera, two major clades were resolved, both of which were marked by otherwise homoplasious characters of the gynoecium: Clade A [99% jackknife (JK); 1.0 posterior probability (PP)] with nine species and Clade B (60% JK; 0.98 PP) with 22 …

Our study examines the structural peculiarities of the generative sphere at different phases of development, and the processes of pollination, fertilisation, and seed formation in 2 species of wild flora: Arbutus andrachne L. Symphytum anatolicum Boiss. is an endemic species in the Flora of Turkey and the East Aegean Islands. It was first collected by d'Urville on the island of Cos in 1820 and named Symphytum asperrimum d'Urv. The plant was again collected by Boissier near İzmir (Smyrna) in 1842, and described by him as S. anatolicum in 1844. There are 4 collections mentioned in the protologue in Boissier's Flora Orientalis (1879). The herbarium specimen "Hab. in umbrosis montium circa Smyrnam", housed in G-Boiss. Herbarium, was chosen as lectotype as it best represents the species description.

The current conservation status of the Salvia L. (sage) taxa of the family Lamiaceae distributed in the East, South-East, Central, North Anatolian, and Marmara geographic regions of Turkey was reassessed at regional, national, and global levels using IUCN Red List categories and criteria. In accordance with the present taxonomic revision of the genus since 2005, the study area seems to cover 79 taxa, 36 of which are endemic and 4 of which are rare nonendemic; the remaining 39 taxa are widely distributed. A New Species Of Ornithogalum (Hyacinthaceae) From East Anatolia, Turkey, Bi̇rol Mutlu, Şükrü Karakuş

Ornithogalum malatyanum Mutlu is described as a new species from Malatya Province, East Anatolia, Turkey. A description, photographs, and an identification key including related species are given. The International Union for Conservation of Nature threat category and observations on the ecology of the populations are noted. The chromosome number of the new species is 2n = 24. The morphological differences between the new species and related taxa are also discussed.

A Simple Technique For Cross-Sectioning Gymnosperm Needle Leaves Using Microtome, Jukyeong Eo

If a staining-permanent slide is not needed, this simple and faster microtome technique is very useful for cross-sectioning gymnosperm needle leaves. The technique employs 2× polyvinyl alcohol-lactic acid-glycerol (PVLG) without the steps of fixation, dehydration, clearing, embedding, deparaffinisation, and hydration. Conveniently, this technique can also be applied to thick leaves and other organs of angiosperms. The procedure is very simple and is suggested for use in plant anatomy research.

Chromosome numbers and karyotypes of some species belonging to the genus Artemisia L. (Asteraceae) were investigated, and chromosome counts of 12 species, 1 of which was counted for the first time, are presented with a thorough compilation of previously published data. All of the species studied belong to the subgenus Artemisia Chromosome numbers of 6 taxa confirmed the previous data. Additionally, karyotypes of 8 species were reported.
