An Illustrated Survey On The Morphological Characters In Three Species Of The Diatom Genus Mastogloia (Bacillariophyceae), Fatma Sabanci

The valve morphology of Mastogloia braunii Grunow, Mastogloia pumila Cleve, and Mastogloia vasta Hustedt were investigated using field material. Specimens for study were collected from Homa Lagoon, İzmir Bay, Turkey (4-29 °C; salinity 35%o-54%o) as epipelic and epiphytic (Ulva lactuca L.). The valve morphological characteristics of the 3 species were measured by calibrated ocular micrometer using 20 specimens from each species per station. The valve of M. braunii was 35.15-80.20 µm in length and 12.35-19.85 µm in width, the valve of M. pumila was 13.70-31.85 µm in length and 5.75-9.00 µm in width, and the valve of M. vasta was …

Phytoremediation is an emerging technology for cleaning industrial and urban contamination (Peuke and Rennenberg, 2005). Many factors including germination rate, biomass changes, biochemical changes, and nutrient changes must be determined in order to utilize a plant for phytoremediation. Our results showed that Prosopis pubescens (Screw bean mesquite) is a hyperaccumulator of copper from copper sulfate and a feasible option to remediate fields with up to 200 ppm of copper sulfate.
Screw bean mesquite seeds are viable even after 30 years of storage. Both copper sulfate and copper nitrate decreased the germination rate of screw bean mesquite seeds. In soil grown …

Grain polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity can cause discoloration of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) food products. Five crosses (PI 117635/Antelope; Fielder/ NW03681; Fielder/Antelope; NW07OR1070/Antelope; NW07OR1066/OR2050272H) were selected to study the genetic inheritance of PPO activity. STS markers, PPO18, PPO29 and STS01, were used to identify lines with putative alleles at the Ppo-A1 and Ppo-D1 loci conditioning low or high PPO activity. ANOVA showed significant genotypic effects on PPO activity (P\0.0001) in all populations. The generations and generation 9 genotype effects were not significant in any population. Modifying lignin content and composition are targets to improve bioenergy crops for cellulosic conversion to biofuels. In sorghum and other C4 grasses, the brown midrib mutants have been shown to reduce lignin content and alter its composition. Bmr12 encodes the sorghum caffeic O-methyltransferase, which catalyzes the penultimate step in monolignol biosynthesis. From an EMS-mutagenized TILLING population, four bmr12 mutants were isolated. DNA sequencing identified the four missense mutations in the Bmr12 coding region, which changed evolutionarily conserved amino acids Ala71Val, Pro150Leu, Gly225Asp, and Gly325Ser. Double polyethylene Quonset-style greenhouses offergrowers and farmers a more cost-effective structure than glass- or acrylic-covered structures for growing plants off-season. These greenhouses are especially applicablefor producing off-season high value crops such as fruits and vegetables for local markets. Soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] are susceptible to many diseases including fungal diseases such as soybean sudden death syndrome (SDS). Several studies reported SDS resistance quantitative trait loci (QTL) on the soybean genome using different recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations and low density genetic linkage maps. High density exclusively single nucleotide polymorphisms-based (SNP-based) maps were not yet reported in soybean. Genome-wide structural and gene content variations are hypothesized to drive important phenotypic variation within a species. Structural and gene content variations were assessed among four soybean (Glycine max) genotypes using array hybridization and targeted resequencing. Many chromosomes exhibited relatively low rates of structural variation (SV) among genotypes. However, several regions exhibited both copy number and presence-absence variation, the most prominent found on chromosomes 3, 6, 7, 16, and 18. Interestingly, the regions most enriched for SV were specifically localized to gene-rich regions that harbor clustered multigene families. Increasing seed yield is an important breeding goal of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] improvement efforts. Due to the small number of ancestors and subsequent breeding and selection, the genetic base of current soybean cultivars in North America is narrow. Soybean rust (SBR), caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi Sydow, is one of the most economically important and destructive diseases of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and the discovery of novel SBR resistance genes is needed because of virulence diversity in the pathogen. The objectives of this research were to map SBR resistance in plant introduction (PI) 561356 and to identify single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) haplotypes within the region on soybean chromosome 18 where the SBR resistance gene Rpp1 maps. Gene expression is controlled by the complex interaction of transcription factors binding to promoters and other regulatory DNA elements. One common characteristic of the genomic regions associated with regulatory proteins is a pronounced sensitivity to DNase I digestion. We generated genome-wide high-resolution maps of DNase I hypersensitive (DH) sites from both seedling and callus tissues of rice (Oryza sativa). Approximately 25% of the DH sites from both tissues were found in putative promoters, indicating that the vast majority of the gene regulatory elements in rice are not located in promoter regions. Factors essential for plant life include adequate levels of light, moisture, mineral nutrients, and temperature; though the list is small, each is crucial for survival. This article is a contemplation of how one of these critical factors, light, impacts the biology of our 2012 Wildflower of the Year, Mitchella repens, partridge berry. Aside from issues of reproductive biology, ecological literature on partridge berry is meager. Consequently most of what follows is derived from general works on woodland ecology, perusal of which provides sufficient insight about the biology of Mitchella to inspire ideas worthy of further study.

Eryngium babadaghensis G.Ecevit-Genç, E.Akalın & A.Wörz sp. nova (Apiaceae, Saniculoideae) is described as a new species from the Babadağ (Fethiye-Muğla) in south-west Turkey. The new species is closely related to E. kotschyi Boiss., which is endemic to Turkey. A Latin diagnosis; taxonomic descriptions; photos of the holotype, fruit, and transverse sections of the basal leaves, peduncles, and fruits; and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the calyx and surface of the scales on the mericarp of the new species are presented. Primula × Uzungolensis (Primulaceae): A New Natural Hybrid From Ne Anatolia, Sali̇h Terzi̇oğlu, Kami̇l Çoşkunçelebi̇, Mutlu Gültepe

Primula × uzungolensis Terzioğlu & Coşkunçelebi, a natural hybrid from north-eastern Anatolia, is described and illustrated with its parents. Based on its morphology and molecular characteristics, we conclude that P. × uzungolensis is a new natural hybrid between P. acaulis (L.) Hill subsp. rubra (Sm.) Greuter & Burdet and P. veris L. subsp. columnae (Ten.) Maire & Petitmengin. Maximum parsimony (MP) analysis based on nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) and chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) shows that P. veris subsp. columnae is the maternal parent of the putative hybrid, and the hybridisation between P. veris subsp. columnae and P. acaulis subsp. rubra is …

An experiment was conducted at the University Agricultural Research Farm to study the effect of inoculation with biological nitrogen fixers on growth and yield of chilli (Capsicum annum L.) cv. "Pusa Jawala" in relation to disease incidence caused by plant-parasitic nematodes. The growth, yield, and quality parameters of chilli increased significantly with the inoculation of biological nitrogen fixers using Azospirillum and Azotobacter. Performance of Azospirillum was found better as compared to Azotobacter. Simultaneous inoculation with biofertilisers (100% recommended dose of N-fertiliser 100 kg N per ha and farmyard manure 15 t per ha) resulted the maximum growth, yield, and quality …

A New Species Of Gypsophila And A New Name For Silene (Caryophyllaceae) From Turkey, Ergi̇n Hamzaoğlu

Gypsophila turcica Hamzaoğlu is described as a new species. The specimen was collected from gypsaceous hills, at an altitude between 1755 and 1835 m from Zara District (Sivas Province). The new species is similar to Gypsophila festucifolia Hub.-Mor. The differences between these 2 taxa are discussed. Moreover, Silene choruhensis Hamzaoğlu nom. nova should replace S. ispirensis A.P.Khokhr. 1997, which is an illegitimate name as a younger homonym of S. ispirensis Boiss. 1856.

Rugaspermum Minuta - A New Species Of The Seed Genus Rugaspermum From The Triassic Of Nidpur, India, Nupur Bhowmik, Shabnam Parveen

This paper provides a description of a new species of Rugaspermum D.D.Pant & Basu, R. minuta Bhowmik & Parveen, from the Nidpur Triassic beds. The dispersed seeds were recovered after macerating large chunks of shale in hydrofluoric acid. The structurally preserved compressed seed is platyspermic, orthotropus, and oval- to barrel-shaped with a short beak-like micropyle. The surfaces of the seeds are wrinkled and there is a wide lateral ridge running from the apex to the base on both the obverse and reverse sides. Upon maceration, the seed yielded 4 membranes: outer, inner, nucellar, and megaspore membranes. The outer cuticle of …

The epiphytic diversity of lichens associated with Quercus cerris L. and Quercus frainetto Ten. were investigated in 21 localities of the Marmara region. A total of 106 taxa belonging to 49 genera were reported on Q. cerris and Q. frainetto, and 16 of those taxa were recorded for the first time in the Marmara region. The number of lichen species found on Q. cerris was 83, while 85 taxa were found on Q. frainetto. There are 5 taxa of Erica L. growing in Turkey, 1 of which is endemic. These taxa are Erica arborea, E. manipuliflora, E. bocquetii, E. sicula subsp. libanotica and E. spiculifolia. In this study, microscopic characteristics of the leaves of 4 taxa native to Turkey are reported. Microscopic views of the transverse and surface sections of the leaves of each species were photographed and are described in detail. The leaves are channelled beneath or strongly revolute. Aloe vera L. is a valuable medicinal plant and is currently used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries worldwide. In the present study, the effect of various concentrations of Aloe vera leaf gel extracts was investigated on mitotic and phase indexes of Allium cepa L. root tip cells for 24 and 48 h durations. The EC_{50} value of gel extracts was found to be 20% and was used to determine the experimental concentrations. Natural plants in Turkish serpentine soils were surveyed to determine their Ni accumulation capability. Geographic distribution and diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable nickel contents of the western Anatolian serpentine soils and their vegetative contents were studied to find the possible relationships between the phytoavailable Ni amount in the soil and the Ni content of potential accumulator plants. Verbascum hasbenlii Aytaç & H.Duman sp. nov. (sect. Bothrosperma Murb.) is described and illustrated from Turkey. This new species was collected in B1 Çan (Çanakkale Province) area. V. hasbenlii appears to be closely allied to V. luciliae (Boiss.) O.Kuntze and V. haraldi-adnani Parolly & Eren. Its affinities with this and other related species are discussed. The characteristic features of pollen, seed, stomata structure, and hairs are studied using a scanning electron microscope and the distribution of the new species in Turkey is given.

Atmospheric pollen was collected by a Burkard Volumetric 7-Day spore trap in Konya, Turkey, in 2008. In the present study, the pollen concentration is presented in relation to meteorological parameters (mean temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and wind speed). Pollen grains of 35 taxa were identified. Of these, 18 taxa were arboreal plants, while the others were non-arboreal plants. The distribution of the total pollen grains was as follows: arboreal plants, 61.29%; Poaceae, 16.09%; non-arboreal plants, 20.25%; and undetermined, 2.37%. The paper presents the results from the taxonomic revision of Boletus section Appendiculati in Bulgaria. Descriptions are provided based on Bulgarian specimens for the 5 species of the section: Boletus appendiculatus, B. fechtneri, B. fuscoroseus, B. regius, and B. subappendiculatus. The priority of the name B. fuscoroseus against B. pseudoregius is briefly discussed. A dichotomous key for the determination of members is also included.
