The first genetic transcript map of the soybean genome was created by mapping one SNP in each of 1141 genes in one or more of three recombinant inbred line mapping populations, thus providing a picture of the distribution of genic sequences across the mapped portion of the genome. Singlenucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were discovered via the resequencing of sequence-tagged sites (STSs) developed from expressed sequence tag (EST) sequence. This study concerns the evaluation of leaf anatomical characters (7 qualitative and 12 quantitative characters) among 26 accessions of the Aegilops L. species. The results of this study showed that the anatomical characters have high variation in the width of stomata, the number of long cells in the adaxial epidermis, the number of short cells in the abaxial epidermis, the number of stomata in the abaxial epidermis, the occurrence of prickles in the adaxial epidermis, and the width of phloem cells. Phytoplankton (Except Bacillariophyceae) Flora Of Lake Gölköy (Bolu), Abuzer Çelekli̇, Meri̇ç Albay, Muzaffer Dügel

The phytoplankton composition of Lake Gölköy was studied by monthly sample collection from 3 littoral and 2 pelagic stations during a 2-year period (June 2003-June 2005). In total, 152 taxa belonging to Chlorophyta (61.8%), Euglenophyta (12.5%), Cyanoprokaryota (10.5%), Pyrrophyta (5.3%), Chrysophyta (4.6%), Cryptophyta (3.9%), Xanthophyta (0.7%), and Prasinophyta (0.7%) were identified. Spirogyra and Scenedesmus were the most abundant genera, with 13 and 10 species, respectively. Some species found in the lake were new records for the Bolu region (e.g., Gonium pectorale Müller, Polytoma cylindraceum Pasher 1927, Provasoliella ovata (Jacobsen) Loeblich, and Anabaena crassa (Lemmermann) Komárková-Legnerová & Cronberg).

Construction Of A Genetic Linkage Map Of Citrus With Random Amplified Polymorphic Dna (Rapd) Markers Using A Progeny Population From A Complex Intergeneric Cross, Mehtap Şahi̇n Çevi̇k, Gloria A. Moore

This study included 30 plants that were randomly selected from a larger progeny population obtained from a complex intergeneric cross of {C. grandis (L.) Osb. x [C. paradisi Macf. x Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.]} x {[(C. paradisi Macf. x P. trifoliata (L.) Raf.) x C. reticulata Blanco] x [(C. paradisi Macf. x Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.) x C. sinensis (L.) Osb.]}. Genomic DNA was extracted from leaf samples of these plants and analysed for polymorphisms by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), using 10-mer random primers. The Phytoplankton Community (Except Bacillariophyceae) Of Lake Abant (Bolu, Turkey), Abuzer Çelekli̇, Olcay Obali, Okan Külköylüoğlu

A total of 162 phytoplankton species found monthly from 3 littoral and 2 vertical stations between June 2003 and June 2005 were identified from Lake Abant (Bolu, Turkey). Some species, such as Trachelomonas volvocina Ehrenberg, Cryptomonas ovata Ehrenberg, and Ceratium hirundinella (Müller) Dujardin showed frequent occurrence almost every month, but others had specific seasonality. Phytoplankton composition of this lake was dominated by Chlorophyta, accounting for about 58.6% of the species richness. Phytoplankton composition in Lake Abant included many new reported (> 30) taxa for the algal flora of Turkey.

Evaluation Of Karyotype Status Of Musa L. Somaclonal Variants (Musaceae: Zingiberales), Gordian C. Obute, Philip C. Aziagba

Tissue culture regenerated materials of Musa L. spp. (banana and plantain) along with their somaclonal variants were assessed for karyotype abnormalities to be used as indicators for rapid cytological marking. The results show that although slight variations were noted in karyomorphometric characters, like chromosome number, arm length, total chromosome length, and total chromosome volume, these were not significant (P £ 0.05). Therefore, chromosomal abnormalities may not be accurate markers for somaclonal variation in these species. The need to not overemphasise chromosomal instability resulting from culture techniques was highlighted. Other possible causes of somaclonal variations were proposed to explain this phenomenon …

Pollen morphology of the Turkish Romulea Maratti taxa (Iridaceae) was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The taxa are similar in some aspects, such as pollen size and spinulate-microperforate exine sculpturing. Most taxa are monosulcate; however, in 2 taxa, R. bulbocodium (L.) Seb. & Mauri var. crocea (Boiss & Heldr.) Baker and var. leichtliniana (Heldr. ex Hal.) Bég., growing sporadically in south-western Turkey, the existence of pollen type variability (monosulcate, disulcate, trisulcate, trisynsulcate, tetrasulcate, penta-aperturate (with longer and shorter sulci), and monoporate) from single pollen sacs was recorded for the first time. Antioxidant responses were analysed in Catharanthus roseus (L.) G.Don. under 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl in order to investigate the plant´s protective mechanisms against long-term salt-induced oxidative stress. The NaCl treatments were repeated in 4 different stages of growth, i.e. 30, 45, 60 and 75 days after sowing (DAS). The plants were uprooted randomly 90 DAS and the non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant potentials were analysed. High salinity caused a decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) and an enhancement in total ascorbate (AA) content and the antioxidant enzyme and ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11) activities. Specimens of macrofungi were collected from localities on Honaz Mountain (Denizli) in 2005 and 2006, particularly during autumn and spring. Field and laboratory studies revealed a total of 109 taxa belonging to 64 genera, 32 families and 2 classes. Six taxa belong to Ascomycetes and 103 to Basidiomycetes.

Plantago holosteum Scop. and P. atrata Hoppe plant communities contribute to the vegetation mosaic in the humid places on different substrata in the sub-alpine and alpine belts of Uludağ Mountain, Bursa, Turkey. Nitrogen mineralisation in the soils of these 2 mat communities was investigated under controlled conditions (60% WHC, 20 °C). Different N mineralisation rates in the soils of the communities were found. This difference was clearer in the upper layer (0-5 cm) of soil, in which the organic matter accumulation was high. Two New Records From Lebanon: Chamaesyce Nutans (Lag.) Small (Euphorbiaceae) And Eleusine Indica (L.) Gaertner (Poaceae), Ricardus M. Haber, Myrna T. Semaan

Chamaesyce nutans (Lag.) Small (Euphorbiaceae) and Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertner (Poaceae) are described as new records for the flora of Lebanon. Specimens of C. nutans collected from roadsides and rocks in a middle mountain forest confirm the occurrence of the species on the western slopes of the Mount Lebanon Range. Additionally, specimens of E. indica were collected from wasteland and roadsides in the coastal town of Kaslik. The species were observed to thrive abundantly in similar habitats along the coastal urban zone of Lebanon.

Isoetes L. is an ancient, primitive genus of lycopsids. The genus occupies a unique position in plant evolution as the closest relatives of tree lycopods. The morphological characters, namely leaf size, comb, and sporophyll size, are used diagnostically to help in the identification of the Isoetes species. This investigation was carried out between 1997 and 2002 in order to research the forest vegetation of Karagöl-Sahara National Park (Artvin). This vegetation was studied according to the traditional Braun-Blanquet approach. A total of 114 quadrats were examined. Flowering, breeding mechanisms, and pollination biology of Cucurbita moschata (Duch. ex Lam) Duch. ex Poir. varieties were studied. C. moschata carries male and female flowers on the same plant and is pollinated by thrips and bees with nectar and pollen as major rewards for the pollinators. Both flowers begin opening between 0330 and 0400 hours. The male flower opens for about 8 to 9 h and the female opens for 6 h 30 min to 7 h. This paper describes a floristic study of Akçadağ. The research was carried out between 2000 and 2002. During the study period, 2650 vascular plant specimens were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the flora was determined to include 891 taxa (at specific and intraspecific ranks) belonging to 738 species, 328 genera, and 70 families. The distribution of Campanula radula Fisch. in Turkey is recorded for the first time. Thirty-five taxa were defined as new records for the B9 square. This is the first paper on systematic research into Boletaceae s.l. (excluding Boletus L.) in the Republic of Macedonia. A total of 31 species belonging to 8 genera are registered in the Republic of Macedonia. Two genera (Gyrodon Opat. and Phylloporus Quél.) and 8 species (Chalciporus amarellus (Quél.) Bataille, Gyrodon lividus (Bull.: Fr.) Opat., Leccinum variicolor Watling, Leccinum vulpinum Watling, Phylloporus pelletieri (Lév.) Quél., Suillus mediterraneensis (Jacquet. & J.Blum) Redeuilh, Xerocomus ferrugineus (Schaeff.) Bon, and Xerocomus rubellus (Krombh.) Quél.) are reported as new for Macedonia.

The vascular flora of Saline County, Arkansas was collected from March 2002 to November 2007 resulting in a total of 1,510 taxa (52% of the known flora of Arkansas), representing 165 families, 617 genera, and 1,457 species. Of these, 241 (15.9%) are non-native and 99 (6.6%) are of state conservation concern. Of these, 20 taxa (1.3%) are considered to be of global conservation concern (G1-G3). Twenty-seven habitats and plant communities are qualitatively described from the county. Previous work on the adaptation of maize (Zea mays) primary roots to water deficit showed that cell elongation is maintained preferentially toward the apex, and that this response involves modification of cell wall extension properties. To gain a comprehensive understanding of how cell wall protein (CWP) composition changes in association with the differential growth responses to water deficit in different regions of the elongation zone, a proteomics approach was used to examine water soluble and loosely ionically bound CWPs. Soybean rust (SBR), caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi, was first discovered in North America in 2004 and has the potential to become a major soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] disease in the USA. Currently, four SBR resistance genes have been identifi ed but not mapped on the soybean genetic linkage map. One of these resistance genes is the Rpp1 gene, which is present in the soybean accession PI 200492. The availability of molecular markers associated with Rpp1 will permit marker-assisted selection and expedite the incorporation of this gene into U.S. cultivars. This report describes a set of 23 informative SNPs (BARCSoySNP23) distributed on 19 of the 20 soybean linkage groups that can be used for soybean cultivar identification. Selection of the SNPs to include in this set was made based upon the information provided by each SNP for distinguishing a diverse set of soybean genotypes as well as the linkage map position of each SNP. The genotypes included the ancestors of North American cultivars, modern North American cultivars and a group of Korean cultivars. In previous works using ethylene inhibitors and precursors, it has been shown that ethylene participates in the regulation of several Fe-deficiency stress responses by Strategy I plants, such as enhanced ferric reductase activity, rhizosphere acidification, and subapical root hair development. Furthermore, recent evidence suggests that ethylene could regulate the expression of both the ferric reductase and the iron transporter genes of Strategy I plants by affecting the FER (or FER-like) transcription factor. Fertility restoration of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] lines carrying the IS1112C (A3 group) male-sterile cytoplasm has been documented as a two-gene gametophytic mechanism involving complementary action of restoring alleles designated Rf3 and Rf4, as derived from IS1112C. Fertility restoration capability has also been reported from sudangrass (S. bicolor subsp. drummondii) populations. We describe characteristics of a fertility restoration system derived from sudangrass, in which male-sterile individuals were observed at high frequency in backcross and F2-F3 segregating populations. Background: Golden Promise is a salt-tolerant spring barley closely related to Maythorpe. Salt tolerance in Golden Promise has been attributed to a single mutation at the Ari-e locus (on 5H) resulting from irradiation of Maythorpe. Golden Promise accumulates lower shoot Na+ compared to Maythorpe when growing under saline conditions. This study focused on elucidating the genetic basis and mechanisms involved in this difference. Results: The level of polymorphism between the two genotypes was explored using the Barley1 GeneChip for single feature polymorphisms (SFPs) and an oligonucleotide pool assay for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Mineral fertilizers have sustained world agriculture and thus global population and wealth growth for more than 100 years (Smil, 2001; Stewart et al., 2005). Their contribution to increasing crop yields has spared millions of hectares of natural ecosystems that otherwise would have been converted to agriculture (Balmford et al., 2005). However, lacking, imbalanced, inappropriate or excessive use of nutrients in agricultural systems remains a concern. Nutrient mining is a major cause for low crop yields in parts of the developing world, particularly Africa. In other situations, nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) often move beyond the bounds of …
