Atamasco lily is a perennial herb that grows from a subterranean bulb. The bulb is dark, with a short neck and papery tunic formed by remnants of old leaf bases. Leaves are glossy green, linear, flat to somewhat concave, up to one half inch wide, approximately one foot in length and, overall, rather grasslike. When not in flower the plants can be easily overlooked. Flowering stems are leafless scapes that are about as long as the leaves. In crosssection the scapes are hollow. Hymenocrater bituminosus Fisch. & C.A.Mey. is the only species of the genus Hymenocrater Fisch. & C.A.Mey. in Turkey. In this study, the morphological features of the species, such as stem, leaf, flower, and nutlet, are described in detail. The morphological results were compared to the Flora of Turkey, Flora Iranica, and Flora of the USSR. As a result of this study, the description of this species has been expanded, contributing to the knowledge of the flora of Turkey. Temporal Changes In Environmental Characteristics And Diversity Of Net Phytoplankton In A Freshwater Lake, C. Chattopadhyay, T. C. Banerjee

Temporal changes in the species composition, seasonal abundance, and diversity of net phytoplankton (NPP) were investigated in relation to some environmental characteristics of the water and sediment of Lake Krishnasayer, an ancient man-made shallow freshwater lake, located at Burdwan, India, between January and December 2003. In all, 43 species and 7 genera were identified from the weekly samples taken from a 1 x 1 x 1-m water column at sites I and II. The most abundant taxa were Cyanophyta (34.8%-37.8%) and Bacillariophyta (34.2%-34.3%), whilst Euglenophyta was the least abundant (4%-5.3%). The relationships (r) were significant (P < 0.05) and positive between water temperature and abundance of Euglenophyta, Secchi transparency, and Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta, dissolved oxygen and Chlorophyta, dissolved chloride, and Cyanophyta and Euglenophyta, phosphate-phosphorus and Cyanophyta, and organic carbon and Bacillariophyta. In contrast, the relationships (r) were significant (P < 0.05), but inverse between water temperature and abundance of Bacillariophyta, Secchi transparency and Euglenophyta, dissolved chloride and Bacillariophyta, nitrate-nitrogen and Euglenophyta, and organic carbon and Euglenophyta. Furthermore, regression coefficients (b) indicated a significant (P < 0.05) positive relationship between Secchi transparency and overall NPP abundance, and a significant (P < 0.05) inverse relationship between silica and overall NPP abundance. The diversity indicated high values with peaks in species abundance in March, May, and September at site I, and in May, September, and November at site II. The seasonal abundance and frequency of occurrence for a few dominant species of Cyanophyta (e.g., Anabaena circinalis, Nostoc carneum, Oscillatoria formosa, Rivularia haematitis, and Spirula subsalsa), Chlorophyta (e.g., Spirogyra communis, Ulothrix tenerrima, and Zygnema pectinum), Euglenophyta (e.g., Euglena viridis), and Bacillariophyta (e.g., Cyclotella glomerata, Navicula capitata, Nitzschia acicularis, and Pinnularia major) in the surface water of this lake were 3.3%-5.5%, respectively.

The vascular supply of the proximal, middle, and distal parts of the petiole were studied in 11 caesalpinioid species with the aim of documenting any changes in vascular anatomy that occurred within and between the petioles. The characters that proved to be taxonomically useful include vascular trace shape, pericyclic fibre forms, number of abaxial and adaxial vascular bundles, number and relative position of secondary vascular bundles, accessory vascular bundle status, the tendency of abaxial vascular bundles to divide, distribution of sclerenchyma, distribution of cluster crystals, and type of petiole trichomes. A new late flowering, reddish brown Iris L. species from the subgenus Scorpiris Spach, Iris nezahatiae Güner & H.Duman, is described and illustrated from north-east Turkey. Its distinguishing characters, affinities, and ecology are discussed and its threat category is assessed as 'Critically endangered (CR)'.

The morphological and anatomical characteristics of Anchusa leptophylla Roemer & Schultes subsp. leptophylla and A. leptophylla subsp. incana (Ledep) Chamb. (Boraginaceae), which are distributed in the Black Sea region, were investigated. The morphological features of various organs of the plant such as the stem, flower, and fruit are given in detail. Features related to characteristics of the leaf and calyx were found to be important in separating the subtaxa morphologically. Lenzitopsis oxycedri Malençon & Bertault was collected on a living branch of Juniperus foetidissima Willd. from Thermessos national park, Antalya, situated in the southern Mediterranean part of Turkey. This very rare species belongs to a monotypic genus of Thelephoraceae and was previously only known from Morocco, Spain, and Italy. This fungus causes white rot in juniper wood.

Qualitative and quantitative variations in the surface flavonoids in relation to phenological development of Artemisia vulgaris L. and Artemisia absinthium L. were examined. Plant material was harvested at different phenological stages (vegetative, before budding, floral budding, flowering, and fruiting) of the life cycle of the species. In A. vulgaris and A. absinthium acetone exudates, 6 and 4 flavonoid aglycones were identified, respectively, by TLC analysis. Quercetin 3,7,3'-trimethyl ether is the main flavonoid in the exudates of A. vulgaris while quercetagetin 3,6,7,3',4'-pentamethyl ether is the predominant flavonoid in A. absinthium. Qualitative variations in the flavonoid composition of A. vulgaris were established. …

Several macrofungi specimens were collected during field studies in Kayseri province. After field and laboratory studies, 6 species belonging to 6 families were identified as new records for Turkey. These species are Clitocybe catinus (Fr.) Quél., Conocybe appendiculata J.E.Lange & Kühner, Coprinus macrocephalus (Berk.) Berk., Guepinia helvelloides (DC.) Fr., Psathyrella leucotephra (Berk. & Broome) P.D.Orton, and Russula olivaceoviolascens Gillet.

Germination And Seedling Behaviours Of Seeds Of Peltophorum Pterocarpum D.C.Baker Ex K.Heyne Growing Under Motor Vehicle Emission, Muhammad Shafiq, Muhammad Zafar Iqbal

Motor vehicle emission showed toxic effects on seed germination and seedling growth of Peltophorum pterocarpum D.C.Baker ex K.Heyne. Germination and growth of P. pterocarpum seeds were significantly (P < 0.05) affected in the seeds collected from the polluted areas as compared to the less polluted areas. A higher percentage of decrease in seed germination was found for the seeds collected from the extremely polluted area, followed by very much polluted, polluted, and a little polluted areas as compared to the unpolluted area (control). Seedling and root lengths were also highly decreased for the seeds of the same species collected from the extremely polluted area as compared to the control. A high percentage of seedling dry weight was found for the seeds of the same species collected from the extremely polluted area (62%), followed by very much polluted area (58%), polluted area (38%), and a little polluted area (28%) as compared to the control. According to the tolerance test, seedling growth of P. pterocarpum showed the lowest percentage of tolerance in the samples collected from the extremely polluted area (53%), followed by very much polluted area (71%), polluted area (89%), and a little polluted area (92%) as compared to the campus.

In Brassicaceae a new combination is made: Nasturtiopsis integrifolia (Boulos) Abdel Khalik & Bakker, and in Rubiaceae Cruciata articulata (L.) Ehrend. is a new record for the flora of Egypt. Descriptions, photographs, useful differential morphological characters, and a distribution map are given. Problems of nomenclature and synonymy are discussed.

The present study obtained 12 isolates from Rhizoctonia solani Kühn isolated from Cotton L., Trifolium L. and Vicia faba L. from different localities in the Nile Delta of Egypt. All strains were pathogenic and caused seed rot, wilt, stunting, and pre-emergence and post-emergence damping-off. The isolated strains produced different forms of infection cushions that ensure the pathogenicity of these strains. SDS-PAGE of the 12 R. solani isolates showed that although the R. solani isolates were isolated from very divergent host plants, the total soluble protein patterns among them were similar. The effect of seed mass on germination, seedling survival and growth was investigated in Prunus jenkinsii Hook.f. & Thoms. (Rosaceae), an evergreen tree species. Seed mass varied from a minimum of 0.5 g to a maximum of 2.72 g. Seed mass had a significant effect on the percentage of seeds that germinated: 28%, 41% and 42%, respectively, of light- (1.5 g), intermediate- (> 1.5 to 2 g) and heavy-weight (> 2 g) seeds germinated. After 1 year of germination, the seedlings that arose from heavy-, intermediate- and light-weight seeds showed 80%, 63% and 42% survival, respectively. Seedling vigour, expressed in …

A new variety from Turkey is described and illustrated: Juniperus oxycedrus L. subsp. oxycedrus var. spilinanus Yalt., Eliçin & Terzioğlu. This variety grows in forest clearings of Pinus brutia Ten. and P. nigra J.F.Arnold subsp. nigra var. caramanica (Loudon) Rehder, and on stony slopes (800-1400 m) in Spildağı National Park, Manisa (B1) in West Anatolia. Its diagnostic morphological characters are discussed.

Four moss species, namely, Tetraphis pellucida Hedw. (Tetraphidaceae), Ulota crispa (Hedw.) Brid. (Orthotrichaceae), Haplohymenium triste (Ces.) Kindb. (Anomodontaceae), and Rhynchostegiella litorea (De Not.) Limpr. (Brachytheciaceae) are recorded from Iran. The specimens were collected from Kheiroodkenar Forest, Mazandaran Province (north of Iran).

Field studies were carried out to determine the vascular flora of the Gölcük area (Bolu) during 1997-1998. At the end of the evaluation of the identification of the collected specimens and the results of previous studies, 80 families, 277 genera, 461 species and 475 taxa in total were determined. The rates of species belonging to certain phytogegraphical regions are as follows: the Euro-Siberians 30.8% (142 spp.), the Irano-Turanians 1.5% (7 spp.), the Mediterraneans 5.2% (24 spp.), and phytogeographically unknown 58.4% (269 spp.). The number of endemic taxa found in the research area is 16; thus the endemism rate is 3.5%. …

Panderia pilosa Fisch. & C.A.Mey. (Chenopodiaceae) was never previously reported for the flora of Lebanon, although it occurs in all neighbouring countries. Specimens collected from Mount Mnaitra in the Mount Lebanon range confirm its presence.

Native plant succession studies were conducted in 2000 and 2001 at the Cedar Hills Sand Prairie northwest of Cedar Falls, IA. The study site consisted of a remnant sand prairie with an adjoining old-field that had been undergoing secondary succession since the mid-1970s. Vegetation was sampled over a 100 m transect of the remnant prairie and a 200 m transect of the old-field. The transect was sub-divided into 50 m subsites to examine progression of native species into the old-field. The habitats at the VCR LTER that were the focus of the current study are the Hog Island and Parramore Island 'pimples', small, rounded dunes forming along main dune ridges of the barrier islands. There are distinct plant assemblage zones found on pimples, although most of these dunes are 10–20 m in diameter. Hypotheses of the study were that fresh water availability was a main determinant of differences between assemblages and that pimple size and location would influence diversity and assemblage structure. The number of botany students, botany classes, botany departments in universities and botanists attending conventions has been declining over many years in North America. This is part of a general trend throughout the field of organismal biology, not just botany. The history leading up to the situation today in North America, is discussed and reasons are given for this trend over the last century of time. Seven ways to keep botany a viable occupation are discussed otherwise botany, in the 21st century, may go the way of the dinosaur. © 2007.
