Prospects for utilizing whole-genome association analysis in autogamous plant populations appear promising due to the reported high levels of linkage disequilibrium (LD). To determine the optimal strategies for implementing association analysis in soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.), we analyzed the structure of LD in three regions of the genome varying in length from 336 to 574 kb. Arboreal palms have developed a variety of structural root modifications and systems to adapt to the harsh abiotic conditions of tropical rain forests. Stilt roots have been proposed to serve a number of functions including the facilitation of rapid vertical growth to the canopy and enhanced mechanical stability. To examine whether stilt roots provide these functions, we compared stilt root characteristics of the neotropical palm tree Socratea exorrhiza on sloped ( > 20°) and flat locations at two lowland neotropical sites. This summary revision of the species of Astragalus in North America, north of Mexico, was initially prepared for inclusion in the Flora North America Project. Fertility restoration of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] lines carrying the IS1112C (A3 group) male-sterile cytoplasm has been documented as a two-gene gametophytic mechanism involving complementary action of restoring alleles designated Rf3 and Rf4, as derived from IS1112C. Fertility restoration capability has also been reported from sudangrass (S. bicolor subsp. drummondii) populations. We describe characteristics of a fertility restoration system derived from sudangrass, in which male-sterile individuals were observed at high frequency in backcross and F2-F3 segregating populations. The eastern Mediterranean region is one of the main areas of the Mediterranean vegetation containing Calabrian cluster pine (Pinus brutia Ten., Pinaceae) forests and terebinth (Pistacia terebinthus L., Anacardiaceae) communities. This study was carried out with the leaves, shoots, leaf litters, and soils of Calabrian cluster pine and terebinth growing on both marl and conglomerate substrata in the eastern Mediterranean region (Turkey) to determine average C, N, P and K contents, and the amounts of humic and fulvic acid in these plant soils. The lichen diversity of the Maslak Campus of İstanbul Technical University is presented in this study. In total, 23 lichen species belonging to 14 genera were recorded. Strangospora pinicola (A.Massal.) Körb. is a new record for the Turkish lichen flora and 5 species are new records for İstanbul province.

Malcolmia exacoides (DC.) Spreng. (Brassicaceae) is recorded for the first time (C9 Siirt) for the flora of Turkey. The diagnostic characters of M. exacoides are given and its ecology and conservation status are discussed.

The Influence Of Certain Physical And Chemical Variables On The Seasonal Dynamics Of Phytoplankton Assemblages Of A Source Inlet And The Outlet Of The Shallow Hypertrophic Lake Manyas, Turkey, Kemal Çeli̇k, Tuğba Ongun

The relationships between water discharge, temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, nitrate, ammonium, phosphate and the seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton assemblages of one of the inlets, which is a source of waste for the lake, and the sole outlet of the shallow hypertrophic Lake Manyas, Turkey, were studied from January 2003 to August 2005. Conductivity, ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate concentrations were higher at the inlet than at the outlet. Diatoms and cyanobacteria were the dominant phytoplankton groups at both stations. Achnantes microcephala (Kütz.) Cleve was dominant throughout the year and Microcystis aeruginosa Kütz. was dominant in summer at both stations. Planktothrix rubescens …

Serratula Oligocephala Dc. (Asteraceae), A New Record For The Flora Of Lebanon, Myrna T. Semaan, Ricardus M. Haber

Serratula oligocephala DC. is currently reported as an endemic species of Turkey, where it has limited distribution in east and south Anatolia. Specimens collected from the continental humid slopes beneath the northern summits of the Mount Lebanon Range in the eastern Mediterranean confirm the occurrence of the species in Lebanon.

This study includes a list of hornwort and liverwort flora of Antalya province. It is composed of 2 species belonging to a family of the class Anthocerotopsida and 35 species belonging to 23 families of the class Marchantiopsida of the division Bryophyta. For the C12 grid square of Turkey, 14 liverworts are new records.

Effects Of Salinity: Calcium Interaction On Growth And Nucleic Acid Metabolism In Five Species Of Chenopodiaceae, Essam E. M. Abo-Kassem

Seed germination, seedling growth, and some enzyme activity of nucleic acid metabolism were studied in 5 members of Chenopodiaceae [Beta vulgaris L., Chenopodium quinoa Willd., Spinacea oleracea L., Allenrolfia occidentalis (S.Watson) Kuntze, Atriplex hortensis L.] under NaCl salinity alone or combined with 0.5 mM CaSO_4. High salinity delayed radical emergence and decreased germination percentage in all plants. Combined CaSO_4 reduced inhibition of seed germination in B. vulgaris, S. oleracea, and A. hortensis, but increased it in C. quinoa and A. occidentalis. CaSO_4 reduced plant growth to a greater degree than high salinity did. High salinity decreased total nucleic acid content …

Studies were undertaken for induction of resistance against acute ozone exposure in Rhinacanthus nasutus (L.) Kurz. plants using ozone. Callus induced from Rhinacanthus nasutus leaf explants on Murashige & Skoog's (MS) medium supplemented with 3.40 µM of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) were treated with different concentrations of ozone (T_1 = 1.0 µmol mol^{-1} (±0.2), T_2 = 1.5 µmol mol^{-1} (±0.2), T_3 = 2.0 µmol mol^{-1} (±0.2)), and for the control (C) filtered air was supplied. This paper presents a floristic study of Pirreşit Mountain. The research was carried out in 1997 and 1998, and 3500 vascular plant specimens were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the flora was determined as 820 taxa (at specific and infraspecific ranks) belonging to 767 species, 309 genera, and 65 families. The largest families were Asteraceae (125 taxa), Poaceae (89 taxa), and Fabaceae (72 taxa). The largest genera were Astragalus L. (28), Silene L. (23), and Centaurea L. (16). Flora Of Rahat Mountain (Burdur, Turkey), Esat Çeti̇n, Serdar Gökhan Şenol, Özcan Seçmen

Turkish Journal of Botany

The investigation area is within the C2 grid-square and located within Burdur province. This research was conducted between 1999 and 2002. Nearly 1000 plant specimens were collected and 413 Spermatophyta taxa belonging to 55 families were identified from these specimens. Among the identified taxa, 3 are from Gymnospermae, and 410 from Angiospermae (51 of the Angiospermae are Monocotyledones and 359 are Dicotyledones members). The number of endemic taxa was 83 and this number constitutes 20.1% of the total flora.

Scilla siberica Haw. subsp. armena (Grossh.) Mordak (Liliaceae) has not been previously reported among the flora of Lebanon. In spring 2005 it was collected from the rocky cliffs of a natural rocky bridge in the high mountain zone of the Mount Lebanon Range.

The nomenclature of 51 taxa in 27 genera of Turkish Brassicaceae has been updated to bring the account of the family in line with the current classification and nomenclature. An appendix listing the previous names, current ones, and pertinent bibliographical citations is provided, as well as another listing the taxa with relevant literature published after the second supplement of the Flora of Turkey. A comprehensive listing of the literature supporting the nomenclatural changes is provided. Pseudosempervivum amanum (Contandr. & Quézel) Al-Shehbaz, Mutlu & Dönmez and P. gurulkanii (Yild.) The morphological features of Colchicum L. species were studied based on samples collected from the Mediterranean region in Turkey between 2000 and 2004. Typifications, synonym lists, descriptions, ecology, and phytogeography are provided for all Colchicum species and relationships to similar species are discussed. New features were determined that were not previously given in descriptions of Colchicum species in the Flora of Turkey, and useful identification keys (for both flowering material and leafing-fruiting material) were prepared for all Colchicum species in the Mediterranean region of Turkey.

This study was conducted to identify the biodiversity of Myxomycetes growing in Derebucak (Konya) and Akseki (Antalya) districts. The specimens have been collected periodically during field trips in 2002 and 2004. While 2 samples were treated with the moist chamber cultures method in the laboratory, 1 taxon was determined naturally. The samples grown were observed using stereo and light microscopes. The 3 new records for the Myxomycetes in Turkey are as follows: Cribraria languescens Rex, Arcyodes incarnata (Alb. & Schwein.) O.F.Cook., and Macbrideola macrospora (Nann.-Bremek.) Ing.

The nature of the inheritance of plant height at 60 days, number of flowers per cluster, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per plant, and number of seeds per fruit was studied from a 10-parent diallel cross of Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. Due to their high general combining ability effects, Pusharubi, Bari-4, and Dynasagor parents were suggested for future hybridisation programmes. For yield, the crosses Deshy x Ratan, Deshy x Epoch, Dynasagor x Ratan, Bari-4 x Pusharubi, and Dynamo x Namdhari had good specific combining ability effects and they were recommended because they produce stable performing rare transgressive segregants. To facilitate conservation efforts within the BUL, vegetation surveys were conducted from July 5 to August 30, 2007 to provide additional information concerning the distribution and quality of native plant community and rare plant species occurrences within the area.

The dinoflagellate species Gonyaulax pacifica Kofoid is reported for the first time from northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey; it has not previously been reported for any Turkish coastal waters. • Minimal information exists on whole-plant dynamics of mineral flow through Arabidopsis thaliana or on the source tissues responsible for mineral export to developing seeds.
