Chaetomorpha crassa (C.Ag.) Kütz. was sampled from the brackish water of Beymelek Lagoon (Antalya). During the seasons in which the water temperature is between 18.9°C (autumn) and 23.4°C (summer), the development density of this species in this area is considerably higher than at other times.

Establishment Of Cell Suspension Cultures And Plant Regeneration In Sugar Beet (Beta Vulgaris L.), Songül Gürel, Ekrem Gürel, Zeki̇ Kaya

The establishment of cell suspension culture from the callus of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) breeding lines and plant regeneration from suspension-derived callus are described in this study. Using different concentrations and combinations of BAP and 2,4-D, the growth patterns of cell suspension cultures were examined during a range of culture periods (0, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 days). In all lines, the growth rates of cells were initially slow but as the culture proceeded, they increased significantly and accumulated great amounts of biomass over a period of 15 days. Age Mediated Effects On The Alternative Respiratory Pathway In Leaves Of Rhodiola Rosea And Ajuga Reptans, Natalia V. Pystina, Roman A. Danilov

The influence of aging processes on respiration and the ratio of respiratory pathways in the leaves of Rhodiola rosea L. and Ajuga reptans L. under natural conditions was investigated. Young leaves had a higher respiration rate and higher activity of the alternative respiratory pathway than did mature leaves. The capacity of the alternative respiratory pathway did not show significant differences between the young and mature leaves of R. rosea and increased in the mature leaves of A. reptans (from 60% up to 88%). This fact may be explained by the higher requirements of growing tissues for metabolites. In this case, …

Phytoplankton Species' Succession And Nutrients In The Southern Black Sea (Bay Of Sinop), Muhammet Türkoğlu, Tufan Koray

The succession, annual cycle and diversity of phytoplankton species and seasonal changes in nutrients in the southern Black Sea (around Sinop peninsula) were investigated between August 1995 and July 1996. One species of Cyanophyceae, 83 taxa of Dinophyceae, 1 species of Prymnesiophyceae, 5 taxa of Dictyochophyceae, 88 taxa of Bacillariophyceae and 1 species of Euglenophyceae were identified. A list of phytoplankton species together with annual variations was prepared. Changes in community structure, density and diversity are discussed in relation to the physico-chemical features of the water column.

Thirty myxomycetes species are new records for Turkey. Among these species, Craterium minutum (Leers) Fries, Dianema repens G.Lister & Cran., Lindbladia tubulina Fries and Tubifera ferrruginosa (Batsch) J.F.Gmel. are also new genus record taxa for the myxomycetes flora of Turkey.

The dinoflagellate genus Histioneis F.R. von Stein 1883 and six species belonging to this genus are reported for the first time from the coastal waters of Turkey (north-eastern Mediterranean, lat. 36° 06' N - 36° 07' N, long. 33° 28' E - 33°30' E). Descriptions of the species Histioneis depressa J.Schiller, H. expansa L.Rampi, H. para Murray & Whitting, H. marchesonii L.Rampi, H. striata Kof. & J.R.Michener and H. elongata Kof. & J.R.Michener are given.

The Effects Of Gamma Irradiation On The Pollen Size Of Gossypium Hirsutum L., Çi̇ğdem Savaşkan

Gossypium hirsutum L. (cotton) is cultivated widely in the south of Turkey. In this study, seeds of the cotton cultivar Çukurova 1518 were irradiated with gamma at 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 Gray doses in a Co^{60} source. The size of morphologically normal pollen grains was measured in generation M_1 and found to be 120.35 µm in the control group, while this value was different in the irradiated groups. However, there was no significant difference in the size of pollen grains of normal morphology and shape between the irradiated and control pollens.

Seasonal changes in selected chemical, ecological and morphological characteristics of Flabellia petiolata (Turra) Nizam. and Halimeda tuna (Ellis & Sol.) J.V.Lamour., which are commonly found in the Gulf of Antalya, were studied. Crude protein content of F. petiolata was found to be higher than that of H. tuna, whereas the crude fat contents of the two species were similar. On the other hand, compared to F. petiolata, H. tuna was rich in inorganic material. Both species were observed to be dense on a seasonal basis in the sampling area and they reached their maximum length during summer.

A checklist is given of 34 discomycetous fungi of the Leotiales growing on substrates of the Betulaceae in Bulgaria. The fungi were distributed between the host-genera as follows: 14 species on Alnus Mill., 10 on Betula L., 11 on Carpinus L. and 15 on Corylus L.

A floristic study of Kazankaya Canyon was carried out. Sixty families, 216 genera and 308 taxa were identified. A species new to science was found from the genus Scorzonera L. (Compositae). Fifty-two taxa (16.9%) are Irano-Turanian, 41 (13.3%) Mediterranean and 11 (3.6%) Euro-Siberian phytogeographic region elements. The remaining 195 (63.3%) taxa are multi-regional and 9 (2.9%) are not from a determined phytogeographic region. The life forms were determined according to Raunkiaer. The number of endemic taxa is 24 (7.8%). Four taxa show variations not previously reported in the literature. Thirty-four taxa are new floristic records for the square A5.

This paper deals with a floristic study of Karagüney Mountain (Kırıkkale/Turkey). The study was carried out during 1989-1991 and 2500 vascular plant samples were collected. Eight hundred and sixty-eight taxa of 378 genera have been identified. Fabaceae, Asteraceae and Poaceae are the largest families and Astragalus L., Silene L. and Salvia L. are the largest genera in the area. The endemism rate of the area is 13.1%. The classification of the taxa into three main chorological units shows that Irano-Turanian elements are predominant. Threatened categories were proposed for 109 taxa according to IUCN categories.

The floristical characteristics of Eğerli Mountain (Eğerli Dağı) are given and the vascular plant species growing there are documented. The research was carried out between 1996 and 1998. Approximately 2000 plant specimens were collected from the area. At the end of the study, 650 taxa (at specific and infraspecific ranks) belonging to 70 families and 298 genera were identified. Fifty-five taxa were defined as new records for the A5 square. The largest family was found to be Asteraceae (78 species) and the second largest one was Fabaceae (77 species). Eight lines of grain sorghum and their F1 hybrids were evaluated for contents of crude protein (CP), fat (FAT), and starch (STA); protein digestibility (PD); and in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD). The effect of seed weight (SW) on these traits and the potential use of near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) to predict them also were investigated. The male lines included three normal-seeded lines (TX2737, TX435, and P954063) and two largeseeded lines (PL-1 and Eastin1). Acquisition of metals such as iron, copper, and zinc by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is tightly regulated. High affinity uptake systems are induced under metal-limiting conditions to maintain an adequate supply of these essential nutrients. Low affinity uptake systems function when their substrates are in greater supply. The FET4 gene encodes a low affinity iron and copper uptake transporter. FET4 expression is regulated by several environmental factors. In this report, we describe the molecular mechanisms underlying this regulation. Clone size of plants of Andropogon gerardii from Konza Prairie Biological Station, Manhattan, Kansas was estimated from spatial patterns of genetic variation, using proteins detected by starch gel electrophoresis and DNA content (ploidy) measured by flow cytometry. Unique multi-locus protein banding patterns and differences in ploidy were used to exclude plants as members of the same clone. Individual clones averaged about 2 m in diameter and areas of prairie of 100 m2 were calculated to contain an average of 31.8 genetic individuals.

Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) was often associated with oaks (Quercus spp.) on upland sites in presettlement forests of the upper Great Lakes region, but widespread logging and subsequent fires in the late 1800s converted these upland sites to fire-tolerant oak forests. Although white pine regeneration is occurring in these second-growth oak forests, white pine regeneration patterns in oak forests of the Great Lakes region are not well documented. \Alpha -Difluoromethylornithine Inhibits The Growth Of Fungus Macrophomina Phaseoli, Narçin Palavan Ünsal, Ayşin Çotuk, Yeşi̇m Kalaç Martini

\alpha -Difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), a specific enzyme activated inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), significantly inhibited the mycelial growth of the fungus Macrophomina phaseoli (Tassi) Goidanich. Putrescine (Put), when added to the nutrient medium at a concentration of 0.25 mM, decreased the inhibitory effect of DFMO. These results suggest that polyamines (PAs) are essential for the growth of fungi and that DFMO is applicable to the alleviation or prevention of crop losses due to phytopathogenic fungi.

In this study carried out in Ankara-Kızılcahamam Çamlıdere and Çamkoru districts, 82 taxa were identified by the authors. These belong to 20 families and 42 genera of bryophytes. of these, 10 taxa are new for the A2 grid-square adopted by Henderson.

The seven species of Salvia L. growing naturally in West Anatolia (Salvia tomentosa Mill., Salvia fruticosa Mill., Salvia smyrnaea Boiss., Salvia argentea L., Salvia horminum L., Salvia verbenaca L., and Salvia virgata Jacq.) and a cultivated form (Salvia officinalis L.) were selected as the study materials. The phenolic compounds extracted from the leaves of the species were separated by two- dimensional thin-layer chromatography. This study was undertaken with the aim of examining the soil-plant interactions of Cistus creticus L. and Cistus salviifolius L. in West Anatolia. The soil analysis data showed that these plants grow in different kinds of soils with sandy-clayey-loam, clayey-loam and loamy texture. The soils in general are not saline but are moderately and slightly alkaline, being rich in nitrogen and having a low level of phosphorus and potassium. They are unaffected by the calcium carbonate content in soils. In our study, water samples were taken monthly between August 1997 and June 1998 from six selected stations in the region, from the source of the Nilüfer stream to the point where it joins the Marmara Sea. Temperature (Cº), pH, total dissolved substance (TDS), conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) values of the samples were measured. The epiphytic algal flora, and the population density and the abundance degree of species were determined. This investigation was carried out between 1994 and 1995 in order to determine the flora of Upper Ceyhan Valley. The research area is situated in the province of Kahramanmaraş and within C6 of the grid system. In the area, 412 taxa belonging to 68 families and 262 genera were determined. Twenty-eight (6.7%) taxa are endemics for Turkey. In the distribution of the taxa according to the floristic regions, Mediterranean elements with a rate of 23.5% are the most common. Macrofungi were collected during field trips in the Ağrı district between 1997 and 2000. At the end of field and laboratory studies, 45 taxa belonging to 3 classes and 18 families were identified. Three of these, Pluteus ephebeus (Fr.:Fr.) Gill. (Pluteaceae), Coprinus auricomus Pat. (Coprinaceae) and Inocybe tigrina Heim. (Cortinariaceae), are new records for the mycoflora of Turkey.

The natural and cultivated plants of Tuzaklı, Otluk, Gidefi mountains and their surroundings were studied between 1994 and 1997; 2486 herbarium specimens belonging to 1023 taxa, 484 genera and 98 families were collected and identified from the areas. Sixty-one taxa are cultivated and the rest are native plants. The phytogeographic elements are represented in the study area as follows: Mediterranean 360 (37.4%), Irano-Turanian 86 (8.9%) and Euro-Siberian 35 (3.6%). The phytogeographic regions of 481 (50%) taxa are either multi-regional or unknown.
