Herbivore damage is generally detrimental to plant fitness, and the evolutionary response of plant populations to damage can involve either increased resistance or increased tolerance. While characters that contribute to resistance, such as secondary chemicals and trichomes, are relatively well understood, characters that contribute to a plant’s ability to tolerate damage have received much less attention. Using Helianthus annuus (wild sunflower) and simulated damage of Haplorhynchites aeneus (head-clipping weevil) as a model system, we examined morphological characters and developmental processes that contribute to compensatory ability. The Chromosome Number Of Schaffnerella Gracilis (Gramineae, Chloridoideae), J. Travis Columbus, Nancy F. Refulio-Rodriguez

The first ever chromosome report for the monotypic genus Schaffnerella (Grarnineae, Chloridoideae) is 2n = 20 (10 II) from pollen parent cells at diakinesis, which indicates diploidy and a base number of 10. The close relative Lycurus likewise has x = 10, but is tetraploid (2n = 4x = 40).

In this study, the seasonal variations in the macro-algal biomass in the Gulf of Antalya (north-eastern Mediterranean) were investigated. The seasonal variations of the macro-algal biomass were found to be related to the biology of the abundant species during less favourable seasons. These variations occurred usually as a result of a significant reduction in algal density [Padina pavonica (L.) J.V.Lamour., Dasycladus vermicularis (Scopoli) Krasser, Chondrophycus papillosus (C.Agardh) Garbay & Harper] or loss of major part of their thallus [Cystoseira spp., Liagora distenta (Mertens ex Roth) J.V.Lamour., Liagora viscida (Forssk.) Effect Of Indole-3-Butyric Acid On In Vitro Root Development In Lentil (Lens Culinaris Medik.), Khalid Mahmood Khawar, Sebahatti̇n Özcan

Lentil is an important crop of the family Leguminosae and is notoriously recalcitrant to rooting in vitro. Shoots of cultivar \"Ali Dayı\" of lentil obtained after culturing seeds for 10 days on MS medium were isolated and rooted on MS medium containing indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/l. The primary response was obtained after 4 weeks; 0.25 mg/l IBA gave the best results, with a rooting percentage of 25%, mean number of 7.87 roots along with mean root length of 7.13 cm. However, all other concentrations of IBA failed to induce roots.

Fruiting specimens of Cheilothela chloropus (Brid.) Lindb. were collected and illustrated for the first time from the southwest of Turkey. A description and the distribution of the species are given to provide a contribution for further studies on Turkish mosses.

The macrofungi collected during field trips from the Değirmenboğazı picnic area between 1998 and 2001 were investigated taxonomically. As a result of these field and laboratory studies, 54 taxa belonging to 19 families were identified. These species are presented as a list. Eleven of these taxa are new records to the Turkish Macromycota.

Liverworts (Marchantiopsida) Of The Dilek Peninsula National Park, Hati̇ce Özenoğlu Ki̇remi̇t, İsa Gökler

In this study, the distribution of liverworts in the Dilek Peninsula National Park was investigated. The study area is near Kuşadası in Aydın and within the C11 square of Turkey. Twenty-six species were determined from this plant group belonging to the class Marchantiopsida (Hepaticae) of the division Bryophyta. These species are collected into 18 families. Of these, Pellia neesiana (Gott.) Limpr., Gymnocolea acutiloba (Schiffn.) K.Müll., Jungermannia hyalina Lyell, Calypogeia sphagnicola (H.Arn. & J.Perss.) Warnst. & Loeske, Radula lindenbergiana Gott & Hartm. and Lejeunea lamacerina (Steph.) Schiffn. are reported for the first time from the C11 square of Turkey.

The Flora And Vegetation Of Kunduz Forests (Vezirköprü / Samsun), Fazil Özen, Mahmut Kilinç

The research area, Kunduz Forests, is located on Kunduz Mountain, which is about 35 km south-west of Vezirköprü (Samsun). This area is in the A5 square in the grid scheme of Davis and is in the Euxine sector of the Euro-Siberian floristic region phytogeographically. The distribution of 306 specific and infraspecific taxa forming the flora of the research area according to floristic regions is as follows: Euro-Siberian 28.43%, Mediterranean 11.44% and Irano-Turanian 4.90%. The Planktonic Diatoms Of Lake Çıldır (Ardahan-Turkey), Aydin Akbulut, Kazim Yildiz

This paper describes the planktonic diatom flora of Lake Çıldır. Samples were collected monthly between May 1991 and September 1993 at three different stations. A total of 94 diatom taxa were identified. In the study period, the most dominant and abundant taxa were Cyclotella meneghiniana Kütz., Aulacoseria granulata (Ehrenb.) Simonsen, Melosira varians C.Agardh and Navicula Bory spp. The diatom flora of the lake is rich in species and varieties and is similar to that in other parts of Turkey.

P-Protein Structure In Functional And Non-Functional Secondary Phloem In Armeniaca Vulgaris Lam. (Rosaceae), Gönül Algan, H. Nurhan Bakar Büyükkartal

P-proteins (phloem proteins) and their conformational changes in the functional and non-functional sieve elements in secondary phloem of Armeniaca vulgaris Lam. (Rosaceae) were examined with an electron microscope. Scattered throughout the cell, the fibrillar components of p-protein in active sieve elements were much denser sieve plate surfaces. P-proteins in inactive sieve elements, different from those of active ones, were observed to appear as disordered, short, thread-like fibrils with fern-like crystalline structure.

A two-step experiment was conducted in order to understand whether natural algal communities (fish-pond water) and selected macrophytes (Potamogeton pectinatus L. Elodea nuttallii (Planch.). St.John. and Utricularia L. sp.) + algae were limited by lack of inorganic carbon (IC). First, 0.6 ml 1 M KHCO_3- was added to the water of Vajgar and Ratmirovsky ponds, South Bohemia, and incubated for 180 minutes under 125 µE m^{-2} s^{-1} light. Then light intensity was increased to 150 µE m^{-2} s^{-1} and 0.6 ml 1 M KHCO_3- was added to selected macrophytes + Vajgar pond waters and incubated for 50 and 180 minutes. …

High-value specialty chemicals are usually obtained from natural products by extracting with generally regarded as safe (GRAS) solvents. Because organic solvents are quite often used, high operating and disposal costs occur. When compared to traditional solvents, water is an interesting alternative because of its low operating and disposal costs. Milk thistle contains compounds (taxifolin, silychristin, silydianin, silybinin A, and silybinin B) that display hepatoxic protection properties. Salinity depresses ion activities, decreases the ratios of plant nutrients to Na and Cl ions, and consecutively suppresses plant growth. The objective of the present study was to distinguish the effects of NaCl and Na_2SO_4 salinity on the growth, ionic relations and proline accumulation of tomato plants. Tomato plants were grown for two months. Plant growth was reduced, but proline accumulation was enhanced by salinity. Total N and NO_3-N content of plants were decreased by both NaCl and Na_2SO_4 salinity. Sulphur content was not affected by the salt treatments. Salinity caused nutrient imbalances. Variations in abscisic acid (ABA) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) concentrations were studied in Funalia trogii (Berk.) Bondartsev & Singer and Phanerochaete chrysosporium Burds. ME446 subjected to salt stress. The levels of ABA and IAA were determined by gas chromatography (GC) and UV-VIS spectrophotometry. The levels of hormones vary in the regulation of growth and in response to stress. It was found that ABA concentrations were higher in the salt stressed groups than in the control groups, whereas IAA concentrations were lower. These results show that, in fungi, ABA concentrations are positively and IAA concentrations negatively correlated with salt stress.

In order to test how both water depth and Lemna minor L. affect the growth rate of algae, two different experiments were designed. In the first experiment, Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turp.) Breb. was cultured in sterilized Steinberg solution with reduced N and P levels in plastic containers at depths of 5, 10, 15 and 20cm. In this study, the levels of endogenous free, bound and total auxin (Indole-3-acetic acid, IAA), gibberellic acid (GA_3), abscisic acid (ABA) and cytokinin (zeatin) were examined in some species of mosses and lichens. For determination of the levels of these plant growth regulators, spectrophotometry was used. Our findings show that the mosses and lichens used in this study produce the plant growth regulators IAA, GA_3, ABA and zeatin.
A Contribution To The Bryophyte Flora Of Western Turkey: The Bryophyte Flora Of Madran Mountain And The Çine Valley (Aydın, Turkey), Adnan Erdağ

This study presents a survey on the bryophyte flora of Madran mountain and Çine valley (Aydın, Turkey). One hundred and thirty-three bryophyte species belonging to 35 families and 69 genera were recorded from the area. Phaeoceros laevis (L.) Prosk. is the only member of the hornworts while liverworts are represented by 15 species. The remaining 117 taxa belong to the Bryopsida. Thirty-five species are new records for square C11 according to Henderson's (1961) grid system.

Seasonal changes in phytoplankton composition and phytoplankton abundance and physico-chemical factors affecting these parameters were investigated in this study. Quantitative and qualitative phytoplankton and nutrient analysis were carried out between 1998 and 1999 at 12 sampling stations located from inshore to offshore of Karataş, situated in the north-eastern Mediterranean. A total of 135 taxa were determined, belonging to four algae classes: Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae and Dictyochophyceae. Bacillariophyceae appeared to be the dominant group in terms of total species number and cell numbers during the research period. The effects of cold-shock treatment of Capsicum annuum L. buds at 4°C for 48 or 96 h, and the addition of 0.25% activated charcoal on embryo formation were examined. Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal nutrient medium was supplemented with combinations of 4 mg l^{-1} naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 1 mg l^{-1} benzyladenine (BA) or 1 mg l^{-1} NAA and 4 mg l^{-1} BA, together with 0.8% (w/v) agar and 3% (w/v) sucrose. The pollen grains of nine species of Convolvulus L. from Morocco were studied using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. The species belong to three sections and four subsections: sections Convolvulus, Acanthocladi Boiss. and Inermes Boiss. and subsections Convolvulus, Spinescentes Boiss., Oleifolii Peter, and Diffusi Boiss. The pollen grains in the genus examined are all 3-zonocolpate. The pollen is suboblate, oblate-spheroidal, prolate-spheroidal and prolate. The nexine is thinner than the sexine and the tectum is distinctly perforated in all species. The pollen grains show variation within the genus in polar and equatorial axes, colpus length and shape. Twenty-one genotypes of lentils (Lens culinaris Medik.), obtained from different sources in Turkey and Pakistan, were included in the study. Seeds were germinated in MS medium for 6-10 days with a 16 h photoperiod at 24°C, from which leaf and stem explants were isolated for inoculation with super virulent strain A281 (pTiBo 542) :: pBI121.1 agropine/mannopine type of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The binary plasmid pBI121.1 carried a GUS gene directed by CaMV 35S promoter in order to confirm transformation by GUS expression.
