The vegetation mosaic around the Second Center of Tourism Development in Uludağ (Bursa) was determined by aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques. The vegetation characteristic of the area is composed of dwarf shrub formation (Vaccinium myrtillus-Juniperus communis-comm. and Juniperus communis-comm.). In addition, a database related to the vegetation mosaic of the area was prepared.

All known pyrimidine and pyrimidine-derived secondary producs originate from uracil or its precursor, uracil-6-carboxylic acid. The biosynthesis of these products has been suggested to be uracil detoxication mechanisms. The possible toxic effects of uracil on the germination and growh of Pisum sativum L. cultivar Meteor, Lathyrus tingitanus L. in which pyrimidine-derived secondary products occur naturally, and of Phaseolus aureus Roxb. and Glycine max (L.) Merr., in which these compouns do not occur, were examined. During the vegetation period, a total of 52 plant specimens were collected from Uludağ National Park (Bursa) between 1988 and 1989. At the end of this investigation, 23 liverwort species were identified, belonging to 15 families and 17 genera. Of these, 4 taxa are new for the Al grid-square. Jungermannia hyalina Lyell, Marsupella funckii (Web. & Mohr) Dum and Calypogeia azureaStotler & Crotz, are reported for the second time from Turkey.

The bimolecular interaction between Plastocyanin and Photosystem I under steady-state illumination was studied. The dependence of the O 2 consumption rate on Plastocyanin concentration, electrostratic effect in the presence of mono- and divalent cations and pH-dependence were investigated. A mechanism of activating complexes formation between Plastocyanin and Photosystem I in frame of trimeric structure of Photosystem I is proposed.

Airborne Pollen Concentration In Kütahya, Adem Biçakci, Osman Nuri̇ Benli̇oğlu, Di̇lek Erdoğan

Turkish Journal of Botany

The airborne pollen cocentration in the atmosphere of Kütahya was determined by gravimetry with a Durham sampler in 1996. During this study, 23 taxa of arboreal and 14 taxa of herbaceous pollen grains were collected and identified. Pollen from the following taxa were also found to be prevalent in the atmosphere of Kütahya: Pinus L., Cupressaceae, Platanus orientalis L., Quercus L., Oleaceae, Gramineae, Urticaceae, Chenopodiaceae/ Amaranthaceae, Compositae and Plantago L. The effects of meteorological factors (temperature, humidity, wind speed, rainfall) on pollen production, dispersal and concentration in the atmosphere of Kütahya were observed.

Top Senescence In Sternbergia Lutea(L.) Ker-Gawl. Ex Sprengel And Narcissus Tazettal. Subsp. Tazetta, Hamdi̇ Güray Kutbay

Sternbergia lutea (L.) Ker-Gawl. ex Sprengel and Narcissus tazetta L. subsp. tazetta are two autumnal geophytes belonging to Amaryllidaceae. N. tazetta subsp. tazetta consist of some vomitory alkaloids. S. lutea has also important alkaloids too. In this study nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) analysis were carried out in two taxa during vegetative and generative growth phases and the results belonging to vegetative and generative growth phases were compared with each other. As a result of these analysis macroelement concentrations are higher during generative growth phase in under ground parts due to "top senescence".

A method for in vitro micropropagation of sainfoin was developed. Following optimization of the growth regulator combinations in the media, large numbers of shoots were propagated from a single embryonic axis within 8 weeks on Murashige and Skoog (MS) media supplemented with combination of different 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), indole-butyric acid (IBA) and ?-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) concentrations. A Palynological Survey Of Aquatic Flora Of Karachi-Pakistan, Anjum Perveen

The pollen morphology of 16 species of aquatic angiosperms, distributed in 14 families from Karachi was examined by light and scanning microscope. Pollen grains are usually free, rarely united, mostly radially symmetrical, isopolar-apolar, occasionally-heteropolar. Simple aperturate (porate or colpate) pollen are more frequently found. Number of apertures varies from 1-3 or more than 30, rarely compound aperture as in Enhydra fluctuans Lour. Tectum of the families also is quite variable, ranging from reticulate to rugulate, striate, fossulate, echinate or scabrate/areolate. In this work, the forest, macchie and hygrophilous vegetation of Kelkit Valley was studied. Interesingly the study area is a transitional zone along the boundries of Central Anatolia and the Central and East Black Sea regions. From the phytogeographical point of view this area is situated between the Euro-Siberian and Irano-Turanian floristic regions. This study was carried out according to the Braun-Blanquet method. Twelve plant associations and 2 subassociations were identified belonging to four different vegetation types. Ten of the associations and two subasociations here are determined as new associations. Vegetation tables are given.

Rubia tinctorumL. seeds were collected from 4 different regions of Turkey. Plants were grown in greenhouse and cotyle-dons were inoculated with Agrobacterium rhizogenes strains 15834, 2628, R1000 and 9365. Rubia tinctorum plants were also grown in the field for comparative analysis of root anthraquinone content. Agrobacterium rhizogenesstrain 2628 induced only callus formation on the cut surface of cotyledon explants while strains 15834, R1000 and 9365 produced hairy roots on the same explants. Possible variations in the morphology, anatomy, ecology and phenology of Origanum onites L. ( Lamiaceae/Labitae) in rela-tion to altitudinal variations was studied together with the differences in etheric oil content. A decrease in the stem and lower leaf lengths was observed compared with an increase in the cortical area and vascular tissues in parallel with altitudinal increases. The number and size of stomata also varied with this factor. Etheric oil content was found to be different in relation to altitude.

The pollen morphology of 10 species belonging to the 3 genera of the family Campanulaceae were investigated with a light microscope and sacanning microscope. It is eurypalynous in nature. Pollen grains are mostly oblate-spheroidal, rarely prolate-spheroidal or spheroidal, often suboblate. Tectum striate-rugulate, often subpsilate with spinules. On the basis of apertural types 2 distinct pollen types are recognized viz. Campanula latifolia - type, Codonopsis clematidea- type.

The leaves of Elaeagnus angustifolia L. (Elaeagnaceae) were tested as a possible biomonitor of heavy metal pollution in Kayseri. Concentration of Pb, Cd and Zn were determined in unwashed and washed leaves and soils. Differences between the unwashed and washed samples varied according to the metal pollutant levels. Significant correlations were obtained between the heavy metal concentrations in surface soil and washed leaf samples. E. angustifoliawas found to be a useful biomonitor of the heavy metals investigated.

Nitrate reductase activity (NRA) was investigated in diferent parts of some Verbascum L. species ( Scrophulariaceae) collected from different altıtudes of Uludag Mountain, Bursa Turkey. NR activities were compared with respect to (1) different plant organs, (2) different Verbascumspecies and (3) samples collected from different altıtudes (120-1850 m). The highest levels of NRA were found for all species in the leaves. Significant differences were determined between the samples collected from different altıtudes. In the present study, 484 plant specimens were collected and identified from the region. 139 taxa, belonging to 23 families and 63 genera were found. Brachythecium latifolium Kindb. is recorded as the first time to Turkish flora among the others. In addition 12 taxa are new records for square B6 according to Henderson's (1961) grid system.

This investigation englightens the morphological, anatomical and ecological characteristics of Kazdağı endemics namely Allium reuterianum Boiss. and Allium sibthorpianum Schultes & Schultes fil. (Liliaceae). A. sibthorpianum occurs in Bursa, Kütahya, Denizli, Isparta and Çanakkale (newly recorded), whereas A. reuterianum is found in Southwest Anatolia, Islands, Manisa, Denizli, Muğla, Isparta and Çanakkale (newly recorded). Root anatomy of A. sibthorpianum and A. reuterianum typically show exodermis and an empty pith. This study was carried out for to contribute to the flora of Istranca (Yildiz) Mountains Iying from northwest to southeast on the north of Thrace Region between 1996-1997. The study area is placed in A1 (E) square in grid system adopted DAVIS and in Euro-Siberian phytogeographical region. According to the results of this study; 321 taxa belonging to 219 genera and 65 families were recorded. Among these taxa, there are 4 Pteridophytes and 317 Spermatophytes (253 Dicotyledones and 64 Monocotyledones). The nuclear DNA contents and nuclear areas of some endemic Hedysarum L. species were investigated. A significant variation in the DNA content of Hedysarum species was established. The 2C nuclear DNA amount in the Hedysarum species (x = 8) ranged from approximately 4 to 6 picograms. It was found that the variation in the 2C nuclear DNA content was not related to chromosome numbers. However, there was a very high positive linear relationship between nuclear DNA content and nuclear area.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation of tobacco leaf discs was performed with plant transformation vec-tors of pBI 121 and pGus-Int. Both carry the neomycin phosphotransferase II ( npt II) gene and, unlike the pBI 121, pGus-Int car-ries a portable plant intron inside the beta-glucuronidase (GUS) gene. In addition to the integration of the marker genes into the genomes of primary transformants, R1 and R2 progenies were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern blot analyses. The possibility of transferring genes to mature wheat embryos ( Triticum aestivumL. and T. durum Desf.) via accelerated and DNA-coated tungsten particles was investigated. Mature embryos isolated from bread (cv. Atay) and durum (cv. Çakmak) wheat were utilised as targets for bombardment. DNA in the form of circular plasmid (pBSGUSINT) was precipitated on tungsten particles (ca. 2 \mum diameter) using the calcium nitrate method. Mature embryos were bombarded by a microprocessor-controlled particle delivery instrument (GENEBOOSTER TM ) driven by compressed nitrogen gas. An optimized regeneration protocol and a suitable transformation technique is a necessity in obtaining transgenic plants in a given plant species. This work summarizes a simple culture method to obtain rooted plants from leaf pieces of two tomato cul-tivars (ES58 and WC156) within 3-4 months. Here, we also present our preliminary results on transformation experiments carried out with 8-day-old cotyledon explants and Agrobacterium tumefaciensEHA105 strain.

Soluble Sugar Composition Of Elaeagnus Angustifolial.Var. Orientalis (L.) Kuntze (Russian Olive) Fruits, F. Ahmet Ayaz, Asim Kadioğlu, Ali̇ True

Soluble sugar composition from ethanolic extract of Elaeagnus angustifoliaL. (Russian olive) ( Elaeagnaceae) collected from six different populations in the Gümüshane-Bayburt Valley was determined by gas chromatography. In the fruits, fructose and glu-cose were determined to be the major sugars. The analysis showed the occurrence of fructose and glucose in concentrations (w/w) of 32.62-34.60% and 23.37-24.10% (minimum-maximum), respectively. Sucrose was not detected in mature fruits while fruc-tose and glucose were identified as the major sugars among these populations.
