Anther culture of four different barley cultivars ( Hordeum vulgareL. cvs. Anadolu, Cumhuriyet-50, Obruk-86 and Tokak-157/37) currently cultivated in Turkey has been investigated. Two different culture media (BAC3 and FHG) were used and the effect of a 21-day cold pretreatment was studied. An Investigation On Rooting Of Juglans Regia L. Hardwood Cuttings, Tohi̇t Güneş

The rootinf of Juglans regia L. ( Juglandeceae) hardwood cuttings was investigated. The cuttings were treated with a solution of 100 and 1000 ppm IBA concentrations. One and two year old shoot cuttings were used and carbohydrate changes were recorded during rooting. No rooting was observed in any cutting, 32% callus formation was observed on the basal parts of the cuttings. The flower buds burst earlier than the vegetative buds and developed male or female flowers. Callus formation rate or bud burst was not significantly affected by the treatment of IBA. Pollen Flora Of Pakistan - X. Leguminosae(Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae), Anjum Perveen, Mohammad Qaiser
Turkish Journal of Botany
The pollen morphology of 11 species representing 5 genera of the subfamily Caesalpinioideae from Pakistan was examined by light and scanning electron microscope. Caesalpinioideae is ± a eurypalynous subfamily. The pollen grains are generallly radially symmetrical, isopolar, tricolporate and triangular-trilobed. The tectum is commonly reticulate-rugulate or fossulate-foveolate, and often striate. The pollen morphology of the subfamily is significantly useful at the generic and specific levels. On the basis of apocolpium, mesocolpium and tectum features, three pollen types were recongnized, namely, B auhinia variegata - type , Caesalpinia pulcherrima - type and Senna holosericea - type.

Karst., Hygrophorus ligatus Fr., Hgrophorus unicolor Gröger, Hy-pholoma epixanthum (Fr.) Quél , Inocybe olida R. Mre. and Lactarius flavidus Boud. were collected from the Trabzon region and identified as new records for the macrofungal flora of Turkey.

In our study, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and the total amounts of carotenoids in Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kuetzing, Ulva rigita L., Codium tomentosum (Huds.) Stackh and Cladostephus verticillatus Ag. species were determined. Methanol, acetone and diethyl ether were used as solvents. The chlorophyll amount in Cladophora glomerata L. Kuetzing, species and carotenoids in Cladostephus verticillatus Ag. were found the highest. It was observed that sonication had no much contribution to the extraction.

In the present study the effect of kinetin like synthetic hormone Polystimuline K (PS-K) on photosynthetic activity of salt stressed Trianea bogotensis Karst (Hydrocharitaceae) has been shown. Chlorophyll variable fluorescence (Fv) and slow fluo- rescence (SF) have been used to investigate the sensitivity of Photosystem II (PS II) to different salt stress treatments (103, 155 and 344 mM), at different time courses (15, 30, 60, 360 and 720 minutes). The composition of the benthic algal communities and seasonal changes in the densities of the epipelic algae of Uzungöl Lake from April, 1991, to March, 1993, were studied. While the maximum density of the epipelic community was found to be 131111 cells/cm 2 at station I in April, 1991 the maximum density at station II in November, 1991, was 64581 cells/cm 2 . Bacillariophyta was dominant in the benthic algal population. The main epipelic diatoms were Amphora ovalis Kütz. (Cym-bellaceae), Ceratoneis arcus Kütz. Effects Of Salt Stress Of The Respiratory Components Of Some Plants, N.A. Kasumov, Z.I. Abbasova, G. Gündüz
Turkish Journal of Botany
Oxygen absorption, kinetic regularities of free radical oxidation and anti-oxidation activity were studied in roots and isolated mitochondria for various groups of plants under salt stress of NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 and Na 2 CO 3 . The results show that spearation of oxidation and phosphorylation obviously stimulates the oxygen absorption by plants under salt strees. Therefore, the anti-oxidation activity of roots decreases abruptly, resulting in an uncontrolled acceleration of free radical processes. The obtained data is a definite contribution to the concept concerning the toxic effect of salt on plants.

The algal flora at 4 stations chosen on Aksu Stream were investigated between September 1993 and August 1994. The flora consisted of 73 taxa belonging to the Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Euglenophyta divisions. The species of Navicula Broy., Nitzschia Hassall, SurirellaTurpin, Amphora Ehr., Cymbella Agardh, Concconeis Ehr., Fragilaria Lyngbye and Synedra ulana (Nitz.) Ehr. were found to be widespread. Apart from members of Bacillariophyta, Oscillatoria limosa (Roth.). Two hundred forty-three lichen taxa are reported from the province of Hatay. Of these, 223 species are reported for the first time for the province of Hatay, 74 species are new records for the mediterranean region of Turkey, and 35 species are new records for Turkey. The effects of various concentrations of Cytozyme Crop Plus (CCP) on Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. plant yield have been examined in this study. Single doses of 50 and 100 ml per decare of CCP were pulverized on seedlings of 15 cm height after second flowering, which have been given normal care. In addition, 50 ml per decare has been aplied twice in a separate parcel. Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) In The Phytoplankton Of Keban Reservoir And Their Seasonal Variations, A. Kadri Çeti̇n, Bülent Şen

The seasonal variations of planktonic diatoms occurring in the Keban and Içme regions of Keban Reservoir were in-vestigated over a 2-year period (January 1991 - December 1992). A total of 104 diatom taxa were determined. Cyclotella ocellata Pantocksek, C. kützingiana Thwaites (Centrales), Asterionella formosa Hassall and Fragilaria crotonensis Kitton (Pennales) were the most conspicuous diatoms in terms of frequency of occurrence and numbers of individuals in the phytoplankton. Nitrogen Mineralization In The Soils Of Some Grassland Communities In The Alpine Region Of Uludag In Bursa-Turkey, Gürcan Güleryüz

Nitrogen mineralization was investigated in controlled conditions (60% WHC, 20ºC) in the soil of some alpine grassland communities. A significant correlation was found between the mineralization of nitrogen and certain soil factors (pH, WHC, Total Nitrogen and Organic Carbon). It was concluded that ammonification takes place at higher rates in grasslands which are dominated by Nardus stricta L. (Poaceae) plant species, whereas nitrification occurs at a higher rates in grasslands which are dominated by Festuca cyllenica Boiss. et Heldr. and F. punctoria Sm. (Poaceae).

The plants listed in this study were collected in the districts of Dörtyol and Erzin (Hatay) between 1989 and 1992. The study area, situated at the middle of Amanos Mountains, has a climate typical of its topographic structure and geographical position in the Mediterranean region. During floristic studies, 629 vascular plant taxa, belonging to 328 genera and 98 families were de-termined. The distribution of these taxa according to phytogeographic regions are as follows: 29.9% Mediterranean, 10.3% Euro-Siberian, 5.8% Irano-Turanian and 54.0% cosmopolitan and unknown. The pollen morphology of 14 species representing 5 genera of the subfamily Mimosoideae from Pakistan has been examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Mimosoideae are eurypalynous subfamily. The pollen grains are united (polyads) or free. Single grains are tricolporate and triangular - trilobed. The pollen morphology of the subfamily is significantly useful at generic and tribal level. The 3 pollen types recognized ie, Acacia nilotica - type, Mimlosa hamata - type and Prosopis juliflora - type, correspond closely with tribal classifications.

Phytosociological And Ecological Structure Of Fraxinus Angustifoliasubsp. Oxycarpa Forests In The Central Black Sea Region, Hamdi Güray Kutbay, Mahmut Kilinç, Ali Kandemi̇r

Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl. subsp. oxycarpa (Bieb. ex Willd). Franco & Rocha Afonso forests formed pure stands along the alluvial delta of the Central Black Sea Region. These forests represent hygrophyllous azonal formations. This species usually forms mixed stands with other deciduous species in other regions. In this study the phytosociological structure and soil characteristics of F. angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa forests were investigated. Nutrient concentrations in the leaves of the dominant species F. angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa were also studied during mid-growing season and senescence. It was determined that nutrient concentrations tended to decrease during senescence.

The epipelic and epilithic algae of the Sana river, were investigated during the period January 1995 to December 1995. Sity taxa belonging to the Bacillariphyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Euglenopnyta divisions were identified. Melosira varians Ag. (Coscinodiscaceae), Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta (Ehr.) Cleve (Achnanthaceae), Cymbella minuta Hilse ex Rabh. (Cymbellaceae), Navicula cryptocephala Kütz. and N. cryptocephala var. veneta Kütz. Grun. (Naviculaceae), were abundant among epipelic algae. Of the epilithic algae, it was observed that Concconeis placentula var. euglypta, Cymbella mi-nuta and Didymosphenia geminata (Lyng.) M. S. (Naviculaceae) were abundant.

It is reported here that Galium recurvum Req. ex DC., collected from Ayvalik (province of Balikesir), is new to the Turkish flora. In this article a photograph, a short morphological description, including an illustration of the plant parts, and a distribution map are presented.

A new Lamiaceae species, Stachys cydni Kotschy Gemici & Leblebici is described from the Bolkar Mountains (Içel) in southern Anatolia. This species grows in rock crevices at an altitude of 1450-1560 m. The diagnostic features, a detailed description and a figure of the species are given with a discussion of its taxonomy.

In this study the possibilities of in vitro vegatitive propagation of almond ( Amygdalus communis L.) cv. Texas and cv. Nonpareil by shoot-tip culture were investigated. Different levels of IBA (0.0, 0.1 and 0.5 mg/l) and BAP (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mg/l) were tested by observing shoot development and growth during three successive stages, namely initiation, transplantation and multiplication. During the initiation stage, hormone-free medium or medium with low IBA (0.1 mg/l) only seemed favourable for shoot growth. The genus Placidiopsis ( Verrucariaceae) is recorded for the first time in Turkey and thirty-three of the species are recorded for the first time for the region. With the completion of this study, the number of known lichen species in the region reaches 201.
