Panderia pilosa Fisch. & C.A.Mey. (Chenopodiaceae) was never previously reported for the flora of Lebanon, although it occurs in all neighbouring countries. Specimens collected from Mount Mnaitra in the Mount Lebanon range confirm its presence.

The present study obtained 12 isolates from Rhizoctonia solani Kühn isolated from Cotton L., Trifolium L. and Vicia faba L. from different localities in the Nile Delta of Egypt. All strains were pathogenic and caused seed rot, wilt, stunting, and pre-emergence and post-emergence damping-off. The isolated strains produced different forms of infection cushions that ensure the pathogenicity of these strains. SDS-PAGE of the 12 R. solani isolates showed that although the R. solani isolates were isolated from very divergent host plants, the total soluble protein patterns among them were similar. Serratula Oligocephala Dc. (Asteraceae), A New Record For The Flora Of Lebanon, Myrna T. Semaan, Ricardus M. Haber

Serratula oligocephala DC. is currently reported as an endemic species of Turkey, where it has limited distribution in east and south Anatolia. Specimens collected from the continental humid slopes beneath the northern summits of the Mount Lebanon Range in the eastern Mediterranean confirm the occurrence of the species in Lebanon.

Phytoplankton (Except Bacillariophyceae) Flora Of Lake Gölköy (Bolu), Abuzer Çelekli̇, Meri̇ç Albay, Muzaffer Dügel

The phytoplankton composition of Lake Gölköy was studied by monthly sample collection from 3 littoral and 2 pelagic stations during a 2-year period (June 2003-June 2005). In total, 152 taxa belonging to Chlorophyta (61.8%), Euglenophyta (12.5%), Cyanoprokaryota (10.5%), Pyrrophyta (5.3%), Chrysophyta (4.6%), Cryptophyta (3.9%), Xanthophyta (0.7%), and Prasinophyta (0.7%) were identified. Spirogyra and Scenedesmus were the most abundant genera, with 13 and 10 species, respectively. Some species found in the lake were new records for the Bolu region (e.g., Gonium pectorale Müller, Polytoma cylindraceum Pasher 1927, Provasoliella ovata (Jacobsen) Loeblich, and Anabaena crassa (Lemmermann) Komárková-Legnerová & Cronberg).

Flora Of Rahat Mountain (Burdur, Turkey), Esat Çeti̇n, Serdar Gökhan Şenol, Özcan Seçmen

The investigation area is within the C2 grid-square and located within Burdur province. This research was conducted between 1999 and 2002. Nearly 1000 plant specimens were collected and 413 Spermatophyta taxa belonging to 55 families were identified from these specimens. Among the identified taxa, 3 are from Gymnospermae, and 410 from Angiospermae (51 of the Angiospermae are Monocotyledones and 359 are Dicotyledones members). The number of endemic taxa was 83 and this number constitutes 20.1% of the total flora.

Germination And Seedling Behaviours Of Seeds Of Peltophorum Pterocarpum D.C.Baker Ex K.Heyne Growing Under Motor Vehicle Emission, Muhammad Shafiq, Muhammad Zafar Iqbal

Motor vehicle emission showed toxic effects on seed germination and seedling growth of Peltophorum pterocarpum D.C.Baker ex K.Heyne. Germination and growth of P. pterocarpum seeds were significantly (P < 0.05) affected in the seeds collected from the polluted areas as compared to the less polluted areas. A higher percentage of decrease in seed germination was found for the seeds collected from the extremely polluted area, followed by very much polluted, polluted, and a little polluted areas as compared to the unpolluted area (control). Seedling and root lengths were also highly decreased for the seeds of the same species collected from the extremely polluted area as compared to the control. A high percentage of seedling dry weight was found for the seeds of the same species collected from the extremely polluted area (62%), followed by very much polluted area (58%), polluted area (38%), and a little polluted area (28%) as compared to the control. According to the tolerance test, seedling growth of P. pterocarpum showed the lowest percentage of tolerance in the samples collected from the extremely polluted area (53%), followed by very much polluted area (71%), polluted area (89%), and a little polluted area (92%) as compared to the campus.

The effect of seed mass on germination, seedling survival and growth was investigated in Prunus jenkinsii Hook.f. & Thoms. (Rosaceae), an evergreen tree species. Seed mass varied from a minimum of 0.5 g to a maximum of 2.72 g. Seed mass had a significant effect on the percentage of seeds that germinated: 28%, 41% and 42%, respectively, of light- (1.5 g), intermediate- (> 1.5 to 2 g) and heavy-weight (> 2 g) seeds germinated. This paper presents a floristic study of Pirreşit Mountain. The research was carried out in 1997 and 1998, and 3500 vascular plant specimens were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the flora was determined as 820 taxa (at specific and infraspecific ranks) belonging to 767 species, 309 genera, and 65 families. The largest families were Asteraceae (125 taxa), Poaceae (89 taxa), and Fabaceae (72 taxa). The largest genera were Astragalus L. (28), Silene L. (23), and Centaurea L. (16). Scilla siberica Haw. subsp. armena (Grossh.) Mordak (Liliaceae) has not been previously reported among the flora of Lebanon. In spring 2005 it was collected from the rocky cliffs of a natural rocky bridge in the high mountain zone of the Mount Lebanon Range.

Hymenocrater bituminosus Fisch. & C.A.Mey. is the only species of the genus Hymenocrater Fisch. & C.A.Mey. in Turkey. In this study, the morphological features of the species, such as stem, leaf, flower, and nutlet, are described in detail. The morphological results were compared to the Flora of Turkey, Flora Iranica, and Flora of the USSR. As a result of this study, the description of this species has been expanded, contributing to the knowledge of the flora of Turkey. The vascular supply of the proximal, middle, and distal parts of the petiole were studied in 11 caesalpinioid species with the aim of documenting any changes in vascular anatomy that occurred within and between the petioles. Temporal Changes In Environmental Characteristics And Diversity Of Net Phytoplankton In A Freshwater Lake, C. Chattopadhyay, T. C. Banerjee

Temporal changes in the species composition, seasonal abundance, and diversity of net phytoplankton (NPP) were investigated in relation to some environmental characteristics of the water and sediment of Lake Krishnasayer, an ancient man-made shallow freshwater lake, located at Burdwan, India, between January and December 2003. In all, 43 species and 7 genera were identified from the weekly samples taken from a 1 x 1 x 1-m water column at sites I and II. The most abundant taxa were Cyanophyta (34.8%-37.8%) and Bacillariophyta (34.2%-34.3%), whilst Euglenophyta was the least abundant (4%-5.3%). The relationships (r) were significant (P < 0.05) and positive between water temperature and abundance of Euglenophyta, Secchi transparency, and Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta, dissolved oxygen and Chlorophyta, dissolved chloride, and Cyanophyta and Euglenophyta, phosphate-phosphorus and Cyanophyta, and organic carbon and Bacillariophyta. In contrast, the relationships (r) were significant (P < 0.05), but inverse between water temperature and abundance of Bacillariophyta, Secchi transparency and Euglenophyta, dissolved chloride and Bacillariophyta, nitrate-nitrogen and Euglenophyta, and organic carbon and Euglenophyta. Furthermore, regression coefficients (b) indicated a significant (P < 0.05) positive relationship between Secchi transparency and overall NPP abundance, and a significant (P < 0.05) inverse relationship between silica and overall NPP abundance. The diversity indicated high values with peaks in species abundance in March, May, and September at site I, and in May, September, and November at site II. The seasonal abundance and frequency of occurrence for a few dominant species of Cyanophyta (e.g., Anabaena circinalis, Nostoc carneum, Oscillatoria formosa, Rivularia haematitis, and Spirula subsalsa), Chlorophyta (e.g., Spirogyra communis, Ulothrix tenerrima, and Zygnema pectinum), Euglenophyta (e.g., Euglena viridis), and Bacillariophyta (e.g., Cyclotella glomerata, Navicula capitata, Nitzschia acicularis, and Pinnularia major) in the surface water of this lake were 3.3%-5.5%, respectively.

Two New Records From Lebanon: Chamaesyce Nutans (Lag.) Small (Euphorbiaceae) And Eleusine Indica (L.) Gaertner (Poaceae), Ricardus M. Haber, Myrna T. Semaan

Chamaesyce nutans (Lag.) Small (Euphorbiaceae) and Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertner (Poaceae) are described as new records for the flora of Lebanon. Specimens of C. nutans collected from roadsides and rocks in a middle mountain forest confirm the occurrence of the species on the western slopes of the Mount Lebanon Range. Additionally, specimens of E. indica were collected from wasteland and roadsides in the coastal town of Kaslik. The species were observed to thrive abundantly in similar habitats along the coastal urban zone of Lebanon.

This paper describes a floristic study of Akçadağ. The research was carried out between 2000 and 2002. During the study period, 2650 vascular plant specimens were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the flora was determined to include 891 taxa (at specific and intraspecific ranks) belonging to 738 species, 328 genera, and 70 families. The distribution of Campanula radula Fisch. in Turkey is recorded for the first time. Thirty-five taxa were defined as new records for the B9 square. The nature of the inheritance of plant height at 60 days, number of flowers per cluster, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per plant, and number of seeds per fruit was studied from a 10-parent diallel cross of Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. Due to their high general combining ability effects, Pusharubi, Bari-4, and Dynasagor parents were suggested for future hybridisation programmes. This study concerns the evaluation of leaf anatomical characters (7 qualitative and 12 quantitative characters) among 26 accessions of the Aegilops L. species. The results of this study showed that the anatomical characters have high variation in the width of stomata, the number of long cells in the adaxial epidermis, the number of short cells in the abaxial epidermis, the number of stomata in the abaxial epidermis, the occurrence of prickles in the adaxial epidermis, and the width of phloem cells. A new variety from Turkey is described and illustrated: Juniperus oxycedrus L. subsp. oxycedrus var. spilinanus Yalt., Eliçin & Terzioğlu. This variety grows in forest clearings of Pinus brutia Ten. and P. nigra J.F.Arnold subsp. nigra var. caramanica (Loudon) Rehder, and on stony slopes (800-1400 m) in Spildağı National Park, Manisa (B1) in West Anatolia. Its diagnostic morphological characters are discussed.

Four moss species, namely, Tetraphis pellucida Hedw. (Tetraphidaceae), Ulota crispa (Hedw.) Brid. (Orthotrichaceae), Haplohymenium triste (Ces.) Kindb. (Anomodontaceae), and Rhynchostegiella litorea (De Not.) Limpr. (Brachytheciaceae) are recorded from Iran. The specimens were collected from Kheiroodkenar Forest, Mazandaran Province (north of Iran).

The lichen diversity of the Maslak Campus of İstanbul Technical University is presented in this study. In total, 23 lichen species belonging to 14 genera were recorded. Strangospora pinicola (A.Massal.) Körb. is a new record for the Turkish lichen flora and 5 species are new records for İstanbul province.

Field studies were carried out to determine the vascular flora of the Gölcük area (Bolu) during 1997-1998. At the end of the evaluation of the identification of the collected specimens and the results of previous studies, 80 families, 277 genera, 461 species and 475 taxa in total were determined. The rates of species belonging to certain phytogegraphical regions are as follows: the Euro-Siberians 30.8% (142 spp.), the Irano-Turanians 1.5% (7 spp.), the Mediterraneans 5.2% (24 spp.), and phytogeographically unknown 58.4% (269 spp.). The number of endemic taxa found in the research area is 16; thus the endemism rate is 3.5%. …

The Phytoplankton Community (Except Bacillariophyceae) Of Lake Abant (Bolu, Turkey), Abuzer Çelekli̇, Olcay Obali, Okan Külköylüoğlu

A total of 162 phytoplankton species found monthly from 3 littoral and 2 vertical stations between June 2003 and June 2005 were identified from Lake Abant (Bolu, Turkey). Some species, such as Trachelomonas volvocina Ehrenberg, Cryptomonas ovata Ehrenberg, and Ceratium hirundinella (Müller) Dujardin showed frequent occurrence almost every month, but others had specific seasonality. Phytoplankton composition of this lake was dominated by Chlorophyta, accounting for about 58.6% of the species richness. Phytoplankton composition in Lake Abant included many new reported (> 30) taxa for the algal flora of Turkey.

Seed germination, seedling growth, and some enzyme activity of nucleic acid metabolism were studied in 5 members of Chenopodiaceae [Beta vulgaris L., Chenopodium quinoa Willd., Spinacea oleracea L., Allenrolfia occidentalis (S.Watson) Kuntze, Atriplex hortensis L.] under NaCl salinity alone or combined with 0.5 mM CaSO_4. High salinity delayed radical emergence and decreased germination percentage in all plants. Combined CaSO_4 reduced inhibition of seed germination in B. vulgaris, S. oleracea, and A. hortensis, but increased it in C. quinoa and A. occidentalis. CaSO_4 reduced plant growth to a greater degree than high salinity did. High salinity decreased total nucleic acid content …
