Changes In The Distribution Of Lepidopteran Maize Stemborers In Kenya From The 1950s To 1990s, Zhou Guofa, William A. Overholt, Moses B. Mochiah

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Three hundred and ninety-two maize fields in the southern arable zone of Kenya were sampled for lepidopteran cereal stemborers from 1996-2000. Chilo partelhis (Swinhoe) was the most abundant stemborer, and was found at all locations with elevations below 1500 m, and at some locations between 1500 and 2300 m. The highest density of C. partelhis was in the semi-arid ecological zone of eastern Kenya. Chilo orichalcociliellus (Strand) was found in the lowland southern coastal area, and a few inland sites on the border of Tanzania in southeastern Kenya. Busseola fusca Fuller was dominant in highland areas. In the Lake Victoria …

Farmers’ Perceptions Of Importance, Control Methods And Natural Enemies Of Maize Stemborers At The Kenya Coast, M. J. Bonhof, A. Van Huis, F. G. Kiros, N. Dlbogo

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

A survey among 240 resource-poor farmers at the Kenya coast indicated that insect pests were considered to be the main production constraint. Over 70% of respondents mentioned stemborers to be the most important insect pest. Unlike the eggs and adults, stemborer larvae and pupae were frequently seen by farmers. Alternative gramineous host plants for pests were common near maize fields and were often not destroyed until after the first rains. Nearly all farmers left dry stems and stubble in the field after harvest. Farmers knew of many methods for controlling stemborers, but only 32 and 56% of farmers in Kilifi …

Impact Of Solar Radiation Rainfall And Cannibalism On Disappearance Of Maize Stemborers In Kenya, M. J. Bonhof, W. A. Overholt Jan 2001

Impact Of Solar Radiation Rainfall And Cannibalism On Disappearance Of Maize Stemborers In Kenya, M. J. Bonhof, W. A. Overholt

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The effect of solar radiation, rainfall and cannibalism on the disappearance of eggs and larvae of the cereal stemborer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) were studied. Disappearance and nonviability of egg batches was higher on plants exposed to solar radiation than on shaded plants. Significantly fewer small larvae were recovered from plants exposed to rainfall than from shielded plants. Cannibalism among larvae of the same size was not common except at high larval densities. Contrary to the common belief that disappearance is the result of prédation, these studies show that solar radiation and rainfall might also play an important role in the …

Greenhouse Trials Of New Bacillus Thuringiensis Isolates For Control Of Chilo Partellus Larvae In Sorghum, Michael Brownbridge

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Eight new Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) isolates originally recovered from different source materials and geographic locations in Kenya were tested against Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) on sorghum grown in a greenhouse. All isolates had been demonstrated previously to be toxic to this pest. Bt strains were cultured in a liquid growth medium and preserved as powders for experimental application. Three-week-old sorghum plants (4-6 leaves) were artificially infested with 20 neonate C. partellus and sprayed 24 h later with Bt suspensions. Non-infested sorghum and infested non-treated sorghum served as the comparative checks within each experimental trial. Plant development and dead-heart formation were …

Surveys were conducted to determine the species composition of stemborers and their natural enemies in maize and sorghum in 1999 and 2000 in eastern, northern, southern and western Ethiopia. The six species of stemborers found attacking maize and sorghum were Cltilp partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Busseolafiisca Fuller, Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), S. nonagrioides botanephaga Tarns and Bowden (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Rhynchaenus niger (Horn) (Coleoptera: Rhynchophoridae) and Pissodes dubious (Stroöm) (Coleoptera: Rhynchophoridae). Twenty species of primary parasitoids of eggs, larvae and pupae of Ch. partellus, B. fusca and S. calamistis were recorded. Other natural enemies, including predators, fungi and nematodes, were …

Planning And Design Considerations For Hybrid Poplar Timberbelts, Scott J. Josiah, Gary Kuhn Dec 2000

Planning And Design Considerations For Hybrid Poplar Timberbelts, Scott J. Josiah, Gary Kuhn

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

The demand for wood products and wood fiber has led to the development of a production system based on fast growing trees known as Short Rotation Woody Crops (SRWCs). Traditionally, SRWCs are grown in large, intensively managed blocks, but the technology may also be used on agricultural lands in integrated applications such as timberbelts. Timberbelts are multiple row windbreaks that are planted with commercially valuable trees to produce wood products. Trees such as hybrid poplar (typically cottonwood and to a lesser extent aspen), hybrid willow, hybrid pine, paulownia, etc., are particularly suited for use in timberbelts because of their rapid …

How To Set Up A Mediterranean Fruit Fly Community Baiting Scheme, Sonya Broughton

Biosecurity published reports

Second edition.

The Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) is one of the most serious economic pests, infesting over 300 fruit and vegetable species worldwide. Medfly is thought to originate from Africa and is a pest in many countries including North America, Central America, South Africa, Europe and Australia. In Australia, Medfly is present only in Western Australia where it is considered to be naturalised. Although Medfly are occasionally detected in eastern Australia, these outbreaks are eradicated at considerable expense by local agricultural departments.

For Western Australia, Medfly poses a serious threat to backyard and commercial fruit production, and restricts access to …

Profiting From Adversity - Meeting The Challenge Of Salinity Through New Industry Development, Andrew Quinn, Tamara Law, Peter Rowe

Natural resources published reports

Salinity in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia is one of the most significant challenges facing the State's agricultural sector.

Efforts to manage the increasing effect of salt influenced and threatened farming land requires not only the implementation of new farming systems, but a new way of thinking and attitude to production more in tune with environmental and technological limitations.

While past environment lobby pressures have significantly focused on other production activities such as mining and forestry, the future is likely to see increased community interest in agricultural production systems.

Consumers World wide are becoming more environmentally sensitive, with global media …

Two Large-Insert Soybean Genomic Libraries Constructed In A Binary Vector: Applications In Chromosome Walking And Genome Wide Physical Mapping, K. Meksem, K. Zobrist, E. Ruben, D. L. Hyten, T. Quanzhou, H-B. Zhang, D. A. Lightfoot

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Large DNA insert libraries in binary T-DNA vectors can assist in the isolation of the gene(s) under-lying a quantitative trait locus (QTL). Binary vectors facilitate the transfer of large-insert DNA fragments containing a QTL from E. coli to Agrobacterium sp. and then to plants. We constructed two soybean large-insert libraries from cv. Forrest in the pCLD04541 (V41) binary vector after partial digestion of genomic high-molecular-weight DNA with BamHI or HindIII. The libraries contain 76,800 clones with an average insert size of 125 kb, and therefore represent 9.5-fold haploid genome equivalents. Colony hybridization using a chloroplast-specific probe infers that …

Escherichia coli O157:H7 causes Shiga toxin (Stx)-mediated vascular damage, resulting in hemorrhagic colitis and the hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans. These infections are often food-borne, and healthy carrier cattle are a major reservoir of E. coli O157:H7. We were interested in knowing why cattle are tolerant to infection with E. coli O157:H7. Cattle tissues were examined for the Stx receptor globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), for receptivity to Stx binding in vitro, and for susceptibility to the enterotoxic effects of Stx in vivo. TLC was used to detect Gb3 in tissues from a newborn calf. Gb3 was detected …

Degradation In The Brockman River And Ellen Brook Catchments, Western Australia, Brian Lloyd

Natural resources published reports

An eight day survey of degradation in the Ellen Brook and Brockman River catchments revealed several areas of concern. Key concerns are:

Erosion and sedimentation

Various forms of erosion were observed during the survey that would cumulatively have an effect on the quality of both the Ellen Brook and the Brockman Rivers, and ultimately the Swan River. Erosion resulted from many situations including landholder management, subdivision design and infrastructure maintenance. Raising awareness as to consequences of erosion and sedimentation, along with remedial techniques and best management practices is recommended for the various levels of stakeholders.

Eutrophication

Eutrophication has been established …

Comparison Of Three Leaf Area Index Meters In A Corn Canopy, Wally Wilhelm, K. Ruwe, Michael R. Schlemmer Jul 2000

Comparison Of Three Leaf Area Index Meters In A Corn Canopy, Wally Wilhelm, K. Ruwe, Michael R. Schlemmer

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Measurement of leaf area index (LAI) is critical to understanding many aspects of crop development, growth, and management. Avail- ability of portable meters to estimate LAI non-destructively has greatly increased our ability to determine this parameter during the cropping season. However, with several devices on the market, each with an independent set of protocols for gathering accurate estimates of LAI, it is necessary for scientists to have comparisons of these meters under field conditions before selecting one for purchase and use. The objective of our study was to compare the LAI estimates by three meters (AccuPAR, LAI-2000, and SunScan) to …

Simulating Inbred-Maize Yields With Ceres-Im, Daniel P. Rasse, Joe T. Ritchie, Wally Wilhelm, Jun Wei, Edward C. Martin

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

CERES-Maize, which was designed for simulation of hybrid maize (Zea mays L.), cannot be applied directly to seed-producing inbred maize because of specific field operations and physiological traits of inbred maize plants. We developed CERES-IM, a modified version of CERES-Maize 3.0 that accommodates these inbred-specific operations and traits, using a set of phenological measurements conducted in Nebraska (NE), and further tested this model with a set of field data from Michigan (MI). Detasseling (i.e., removal of the tassels from the female plants) was conducted prior to silking. Male rows were removed approximately 10 d following 75% silking. The thermal …
