Development Of A Comprehensive Base-Level Environmental Training Program For Total Environmental Compliance, William M. Barrett Jr
Development Of A Comprehensive Base-Level Environmental Training Program For Total Environmental Compliance, William M. Barrett Jr
Theses and Dissertations
The leadership of the Air Force has established a goal of total environmental compliance because it is the right and necessary thing to do. Commitment to this goal can be accomplished through strong leadership, however, achieving this goal can only be accomplished through effective training. The lack of consistent guidance for developing and executing comprehensive base- level environmental training programs has forced bases to develop these training programs by whatever means available to them. This has resulted in a broad variation in the thoroughness of base-level training programs throughout the Air Force. This research effort investigates the relationship between the …
Development Of Field Guidance For Assessing Feasibility Of Intrinsic Bioremediation To Restore Petroleum-Contaminated Soils, John T. Enyeart
Development Of Field Guidance For Assessing Feasibility Of Intrinsic Bioremediation To Restore Petroleum-Contaminated Soils, John T. Enyeart
Theses and Dissertations
This research evaluated the process of intrinsic bioremediation, also called natural attenuation, and the parameters that affected it. The goal of this study was to use these intrinsic bioremediation parameters to develop a valid prediction of the cleanup duration using this restoration technology. This analysis was limited to a JP-4 release and focused on the remediation of the BTEX constituents to a cleanup level of 10 ppm total BTEX. The review of intrinsic bioremediation found that the BTEX hydrocarbons can aerobically and anaerobically biodegrade. Of the many factors that affect intrinsic bioremediation, those that most influenced its occurrence were the …

Validation Of A Bag Sampling Method For 1,3-Butadiene, Lori Eckenrode
Validation Of A Bag Sampling Method For 1,3-Butadiene, Lori Eckenrode
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
At this time there is no NIOSH approved means for bag sampling 1,3-butadiene. An attempt was made to use the application of cold (0°F) to inhibit the reactivity of the gas prior to analysis. The State of California Air Resources Board has an approved method for the gas chromatographic analysis of 1,3-butadiene from stationary sources. The method was utilized in the application of industrial hygiene monitoring of affected workers. The application of cold was found to be ineffective at inhibiting the highly reactive nature of 1,3-butadiene. Analyte losses were too great to classify the method as an accurate measure of …

Aspects Of Air Pollution, And Its Effect On The Respiratory System, Jennifer Randall
Aspects Of Air Pollution, And Its Effect On The Respiratory System, Jennifer Randall
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
This report centers around one of today's most prominent environmental issues-- air pollution. First, the major pollutants are defined and explained. Chloroflourocarbons, ozone, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and suspended particulate matter all receive attention.
Next, air pollution's effect on the Earth is explained. The "greenhouse effect", global warming, acid rain, and ozone depletion all have an enormous impact on Earth's climate and atmosphere.
The report proceeds on to discuss options for controlling and so lving the air pollution problem. Se+ective catalytic reduction, noncatalytic reduction, tradeable permits-- these three processes are examples of large scale attempts …

Sediment Denitrification Potential In The Elizabeth River, Virginia, Surena Fazeli-Matin, Andrew S. Gordon, Harold G. Marshall
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Sediment denitrification potential from two sites in the Elizabeth River estuary was studied over a nine-month period using the acetylene blockage method. Rates of microbial processes in this environment are of interest because of the high concentration of toxics present in some parts of the system. Highest rates were found in the highly polluted Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River with nitrate amended sediment ranging from 2-262 nmol N20/h per 20ml of sediment and exhibiting maximal rates during spring and fall. Rates in the Main Stem of the Elizabeth River were lower, with less than 1-85 nmol N …
Effects Of Applied Soil Repellent Finish On Pesticide Residues In Work Clothing, Sandra L. Prior
Effects Of Applied Soil Repellent Finish On Pesticide Residues In Work Clothing, Sandra L. Prior
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
This study explores the feasibility of using an applied soil repellent finish, Scotchgard, on 100% cotton denim fabric in order to enhance the removal of atrazine and alachlor residue during the laundering process. The experimental findings provided no statistically significant evidence that Scotchgard fabric protector reduced pesticide residuals on the 100% cotton denim fabric either before or after laundering. A significant finding secondary to the study involved the possible interaction of Scotchgard with the pesticide alachlor, leaving greater amounts of residual on the fabric after laundering than those found with no fabric treatment. This suggests that agricultural workers be cautioned …

Can We Guarantee The Safety Of Genetically Engineered Organisms In The Environment?, Kathleen H. Keeler, Frances E. Sharples
Can We Guarantee The Safety Of Genetically Engineered Organisms In The Environment?, Kathleen H. Keeler, Frances E. Sharples
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Can we guarantee the safety of genetically engineered organisms in the environment? To anticipate my remarks, the answer to the title question is “No, we cannot guarantee the safety of genetically engineered organisms released into the environment.” Indeed, it is a tenet of the scientific method that nothing can be proved, only disproved. Thus, we can never show that a release will be safe. We could only show that it would be unsafe, if that were the case. However, if the question is posed differently, for example, can we safely release genetically engineered organisms into the environment?, the answer is …
