In Alaska, as in arctic and subarctic Eurasia, important natural-focal zoonoses are rabies, brucellosis, tularemia, trichinosis, alveolar hydatid disease, cystic hydatid disease, and diphyllobothriasis. Most frequently affected are aboriginal peoples in villages within biocenoses that include the natural parasite-host assemblages. Pathogens are transmitted to man from wild animals and from dogs, which are important as synanthropic hosts. The prevalence and rate of transmission of certain pathogens in natural foci are related to the numerical density of small mammals, especially rodents, which may themselves be involved as hosts, and on which the numbers of their predators ultimately depend, such as is …

Two Species Of Acanthocephala From Australian Fishes With Description Of Arhythmacanthus Paraplagusiarum Sp. N., Brent B. Nickol

Two South Australian garfish, Hemirhamphus melanochir, collected near Adelaide, South Australia, harbored 14 and 15 specimens of Micracanthorhynchina hemirhamphi. Arhythmacanthus paraplagusiarum sp. n. is described from 10 specimens collected from Paraplagusia guttata taken from Moreton Bay, Brisbane, Queensland. A. paraplagusiarum differs from other species of the genus in length of the enlarged subapical proboscis hooks. These hooks are 120 to 132 μm long in females and 113 to 120 μm long in males of A. paraplagusiarum, 188 to 210 μm long in A. fusiformis, and 60 μm long in A. septacanthus. A New Microphallid Trematode From The Blue Crab In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Robin M. Overstreet, Harriet M. Perry

Levinseniella (Monarrhenos) capitanea n. sp. is described from metacercariae on the hepatopancreas and gonads of Callinectes sapidus Rathbun from Louisiana and Mississippi. It can be distinguished from all other members of the genus by possessing 11–21 atrial pockets and an acetabulum larger than the oral sucker, not possessing a pharynx nor well-developed ceca, and being 1.9–3.6 mm in length. Heardlevinseniella Yamaguti, 1971 is considered a synonym of Levinseniella Stiles & Hassal, 1901.

Thirteen of 16 Siren intermedia collected in Union County, Illinois, were infected with from two to 49 specimens of Fessisentis fessus Van Cleave, 1931. There are no previous reports of identified specimens of Acanthocephala from Siren. This is also the first report of F. fessus since the original description and represents new host and locality records. Old siren harbor more and larger specimens than do young siren. Intensity of infection and host age do not, however, relate to variability of other morphological features. Echinococcus vogeli sp. n., from a bush dog, Speothos venaticus (Lund), captured in the Province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador, differs morphologically from the three species of Echinococcus recognized as valid. E. vogeli sp. n. is distinguished from E. granulosus (Batsch 1786) by its larger rostellar hooks, different proportions of the strobila, tubular, sac-like gravid uterus, and different arrangement of the female genital ducts. from E. multilocularis Leuckart 1863 by its larger rostellar hooks, different proportions of the strobila, position of genital pore, and greater number of testes; from E. oligarthrus (Diesing 1863) by different proportions of the strobila, position of genital …

Parasite prevalence, intensity, and diversity in Nebraska pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) were studied during the fall of 1971. Fifty-four of 63 (86%) pheasants examined for helminths harbored at least one parasite species. Heterakis gallinarum (65% of the pheasants), Choanotaenia infundibulum (48% ). Echinoparyphiuin recurcatum (1 .6% ), and Zygocotyle lunata (1 .6% ) were recovered. Two of 15 (13% birds examined for coccidia possessed Eimeria phasiani. None of 35 pheasants examined for hematozoa had patent infections.

Morphological information is given on the adults of four trematodes from Mugil cephalus from estuarine waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico with complementary information from specimens from Georgia. Lasiotocus glebulentus sp. n., from the Gulf, possesses a submedian genital pore and apparently differs from all known species by containing several large concretions in the excretory vesicle. Data are presented for Hymenocotta manteri Overstreet, 1969, Saccocoelioides beauforti (Hunter and Thomas, 1961) comb. n., and Dicrogaster fastigatus Thatcher and Sparks, 1958. This paper reports the results of a comparative study of the development of the larval Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863), and associated tissue reaction in naturally and experimentally infected mammals representing 31 species. The histogenesis of the larval cestode was traced in detail in arvicoline rodents of several species, and interspecific differences were defined.
In arvicoline rodents, the developing larva exhibited host-specific characteristics within about a month after infection was established. The tissue reaction in Microtus oeconomus was characterized by the production of a large quantity of detritus around the larva, and by the formation of a thick epithelioid zone. In …

Glaucivermis spinosus is described from the intestine and pyloric ceca of Menticirrhus americanus collected near Ocean Springs, Mississippi, in the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent waters. The genus is characterized primarily by having a preacetabular intestinal bifurcation, a preacetabular sinistral genital pore, a bilobed vitellarium, a swelling of Laurer's canal to form the seminal receptacle, and tandem to diagonal testes. It is most similar to the genus Diphtherostomum from which it differs primarily in the arrangement of the testes.

Karyotypes are defined for two nearctic species of marmots, Marmota olympus (2n = 40) and M. vancouverensis (2n = 42), and supplemental information is included on the karyotypes of M. flaviventris, M. monax ochracea, and M. marmota. The six North American species of Marmota (NF = 66) comprise a distinct group as compared with the middle Asian species (NF = 70) for which the karyotypes are known. Karyologic findings and zoogeographic evidence based upon the distribution of two nearctic species of host-specific cestodes indicate that M. broweri, in northern Alaska, is a pre-Würm relict. The cryptogonimid trematode Neochasmus sogandaresi n. sp. is described from the intestine and pyloric caeca of a single specimen of the striped bass Morone saxatilis (Walbaum, 1792) from the West Pascagoula River in Mississippi. The species is 1.3–1.7 mm long and has 31–37 oral spines, a sucker width ratio of 1:0.45–1:0.54, a forebody 13–18% of the body length, and an elongated muscular pad. It is compared with the five other species in the genus.

Red foxes, Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus), and small mammals were collected and examined during 1965-1969, to investigate parasite-host relationships of Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, in North Dakota. Comparative studies of this cestode were carried on concurrently through experimental infection of carnivores and rodents. In winter, red foxes in North Dakota exhibited high rates of infection of comparatively low intensity. Deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus (Wagner), and voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus (Ord), were important intermediate hosts, but the larvae in deer mice produced fewer protoscolices. Two new species of Digenea are described from the euryhaline fish, Leiostomus xanthurus, from near Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The first, Apocreadium manteri, is most like A. uroproctoferum Sogandares-Bernal, 1959, from which it differs by having multispined scales and larger eggs and not possessing a uroproct. The second, Lecithaster leiostomi, is most like L. gibbosus (Rudolphi, 1802) from which it differs primarily by having a more elongated seminal vesicle and stockier vitelline lobes. Lecithaster musteli Srivastava, 1966, is considered a synonym of L. confusus Odhner, 1905.

Cestodes representing six species of the genus Diphyllobothrium Cobbold, 1858, were collected from naturally infected terrestrial mammals in Alaska during the period 1949-1970. Additional specimens were reared in experimentally infected animals. Of the species identified, viz., D. latum (Linnaeus, 1758), D. dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824), D. lanceolatum (Krabbe, 1865), D. ursi Rausch, 1954, D. dalliae Rausch, 1956, and D. alascense Rausch and Williamson, 1958, all but D. alascense were obtained from man after treatment with quinacrine. D. latum occurred most commonly in humans; D. ursi is reported for the first time from this host, and D. lanceolatum in humans was represented …

The monorchiid trematode Lasiotocus trachinoti sp. n. is described from the intestine and the pyloric ceca of young Trachinotus carolinus. It is most like L. mulliof Bartoli and Prévot, 1966, but differs from it primarily by being smaller and having cirrus spines more evenly dispersed.

Examinations of 18 consecutive fecal samples collected at 6-hr intervals from infected rats showed that oocysts increased in length and width by approximately 40% from the beginning to the end of the patent period. Unsporulated oocysts were first observed in the 3rd fecal collection, 84 to 90 hr post-inoculation (PI) and 100 of these measured 9.9 to 14.3 by 8.8 to 12.1 μ (mean 11.7 by 10.1). Patency ended with the 15th fecal collection, 156 to 162 hr PI, and 100 unsporulated oocysts from this sample measured 14.3 to 17.6 by 13.2 to 15.4 μ (mean 16.3 by 14.2). Despite …

The complete life cycle for a species of Syncoeliidae Odhner, 1927, is unknown. Adults are known from the branchial cavity and mouth of marine fishes which are usually found offshore, and second intermediate hosts have been reported. Sars (1885, Challenger Rept. Zool. 13: 228 p.) described the metacercaria of Syncoelium filiferum from the perivisceral cavity of the euphausiids Nematoscelis megalops Sars, 1883, and Thysanoessa gregaria Sars, 1883, in the South Atlantic. Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xlv. Schistotaenia Srivastavai N. Sp. (Cestoda: Amabiliidae) From The Red-Necked Grebe, Podiceps Grisegena (Boddaert), Robert L. Rausch

The genus Schistotaenia Cohn, 1900, at present includes six species, all parasites of grebes (Podicipediformes). Among helminths found in a red-necked grebe, Podiceps grisegena (Boddaert), on October 18, 1966, at Anchorage, Alaska, were cestodes representing two species of Schistotaenia, of which one is described here as new. The host was an adult bird which evidently had been injured during migration.
This cestode is named in honor of Dr. H. D. Srivastava, in recognition of his significant contributions to helminthological research.

Spinitectus beaveri sp. n. from the stomach of Albula vulpes is described. In the male, the maximum length is 6 mm, the esophagus is approximately 30% of the body length, the spicule ratio is 1:2.5 to 3.0, and there are 4 pre- and 5 postcloacal papillae. In the female, the maximum length is 7 mm, the esophagus is approximately 27% of the body length, and approximately 38% of the body length is posterior to the vulva. A number of terms applied to structures of digenetic trematodes are defined. The hermaphroditic sac of haploporids is distinguished from the sinus sac of hemiurids. The term sinus organ is applied to a cirrus-like organ in the sinus sac of several genera of Dinurinae.
Glomericirrus septemlobus Teixeira de Freitas and Kohn, 1965 is a synonym of Lecithochirium microstomum Chandler, 1935.

The purpose here is to suggest a method which will permit understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of contemporary representatives of the phylum Nematoda without fossils. It is not my intent to again offer a phylogeny for the Nematoda. To say that no real benefit or knowledge of phylogeny or evolution is possible without fossils is succumbing to apathy. One cannot deny or ignore that all systems, morphological, biological and chemical manifested in modern forms developed by evolutionary sequence. A Grahamella-like organism (Schizomycetes: Bartonellaceae) was found in erythrocytes of laboratory-reared northern voles, Microtus oeconomus Pallas, which had been inoculated intraperitoneally with a saline suspension of ground fleas, Megabothris abantis (Roths.), from wild northern voles captured at Lower Ugashik Lake, Alaska Peninsula. A live-trapped northern vole from the same locality harbored trypanosomes referable to T. microti (Mastigasida: Trypanosomatidae). Two morphologically similar but biologically different strains of piroplasms (Piroplasmasida: Theileriidae) of uncertain generic status were isolated from northern voles of Ugashik Lake origin and from northern red-backed voles, Clethrionomys rutilus Pallas, from the vicinity of Anchorage, Alaska. Digenetic Trematodes Of Marine Teleost Fishes From Biscayne Bay, Florida, Robin M. Overstreet

This study includes 111 species of Digenea from 69 of 113 species of teleost fishes examined from Biscayne Bay, Florida. Biscayne Bay represents the reported northern limit along the Atlantic coast for all but 22 of the 111 species. It represents the southern limit for only one, Didymocystis scomberomori. From the known collections reported in the literature, the Digenea from Biscayne Bay appear to consist primarily of a tropical fauna. Species previously known from the Pacific Ocean only are Botulisaccus pisceus and Pseudocreadium scaphosomum. There are 81 new host records.

One hundred eighty-three woodpeckers of eight species collected in Louisiana were examined for Acanthocephala. Only the red-bellied woodpecker, Centurus carolinus, was infected. One of 53 was parasitized by an immature specimen of Mediorhynchus grandis; three by Centrorhynchus spinosus; 12 by Mediorhynchus centurorum sp. n. The new species of Mediorhynchus is distinguished by a trunk which is very narrow in the anterior 3 mm, but is suddenly expanded farther posteriad. Cestodes of the genus Davainea Blanchard 1891, from grouse in various Eurasian and North American regions have been identified as D. tetraoensis Fuhrmann 1919, or less frequently as D. proglottina (Davaine 1860). Those from ptarmigan (Lagopus spp.) in Alaska, resembling D. tetraoensis in some details but having only a single row of rostellar hooks and fewer testes, were earlier reported as D. proglottina by Babero (1953). The study of additional material from grouse from Alaska indicates that this cestode is specifically distinct from the two species mentioned. It is described here as new.
