In working with the galumnids in my collection of oribatid mites I found that a number of specimens from Nebraska showed several characteristics which differentiated them from other species of pilogalumnids. The description and drawings of the new species is based upon a study of these specimens.

Lemmings of the genus Lemmus Link, 1795, have long attracted interest because of the high numerical densities attained at intervals by their populations. In earlier times, in northern Europe, such events seemed so remarkable as to be explained by some as a consequence of the animals' having fallen from the sky (HaGSTROM 1749). During the last 25 years, lemmings have been the object of intensive ecological investigation in Eurasia and North America, although there has been no consensus concerning their taxonomic relationships. I. Gunter and Christmas (1973) described the events leading to the stranding of a baleen whale on Ship Island, Mississippi, in 1968, giving the species as Balaenopteru physalus, the Rorqual. Unfortunately the identification was in error, but fortunately good photographs were shown. The underside of the tail was a splotched white, but there was no black margin. The specimen also had fewer throat and belly grooves than the Rorqual, as a comparison with True’s (1904) photograph shows. In January 1973, large numbers of Mugil cephalus (striped mullet), weighing approximately 250 gm each, died in two freshwater localities in tidewater bayous of Jackson County, Mississippi. Fish identified as Mugil curema, M. cephalus, Megalops atlantica, Dormitator maculatus, and Fundulus grandis were found dead in other low saline estuarine areas. Fish-kills during cold periods are less commonly encountered in Mississippi than in Texas or Florida. This particular incident is attributed to conditions of stress for fishes incompletely acclimated to the encountered low temperatures. The most deleterious stress was the low saline water which probably allowed a breakdown in the …

From August 1971 to June 1973, 351 gobies representing three species, Ilypnus gilberti (Eigenmann and Eigenmann), Clevelandia ios (Jordan and Gilbert), and Quietula y-cauda (Jenkins and Evermann), were collected by Brooks from Mission Bay, San Diego, California, and examined for helminths. The worms were removed from the organs to saline solution, fixed in 40% isopropyl alcohol or warm AFA, and stored in 70% ethanol. All platyhelminths were stained in Mayer's hematoxylin and mounted in Canada balsam. Nematodes were cleared in glycerine and mounted in glycerine gel. Representative mounts are on deposit with the H. The new genus Inodosporus was erected to accept I. spraguei, a new species having eight sporoblasts per pansporoblast with each subsequent spore possessing three or four basal spore-tails and one branched apical one. It is primarily by the apical tail that the species is separated from the only other recognized species, I. octospora (Henneguy, 1892) comb. n., formerly Thelohania octospora.
Spore-tails of I. spraguei are membranous channels which originate within differentiating pansporoblasts during genesis of sporonts into sporoblasts. During the switch from vegetative to spore-forming development, cytoplasmic constituents of I. spraguei segregate into two distinctive domains for which …

Three species of anoplocephaline cestodes, Anoplocephalinae gen. et sp. indet., Schizorchis cf. altaica Gvozdev, 1951, and Ectopocephalium abei gen. et sp. n., are reported from pikas, Ochotona roylei (Ogilby) and O. macrotis (Giinther), from central Nepal. The taxonomic status of Schizorchis esarsi Lovekar et al., 1972, and of Schizorchodes dipodomi Bienek and Grundmann, 1972, is discussed, with the conclusion that both species belong in the subfamily Linstowiinae, near the genus Atriotaenia Sandground, 1926. The Chromosomal Complement Of The Yellow-Cheeked Vole, Virginia R. Rausch, Robert L. Rausch

The karyotype of Microtus xanthognathus (Leach) is described, based on material from one female and one male vole. The diploid chromosomal number was found to be 54, and the fundamental number 62. The metacentric X-chromosome was of medium size and averaged 6.6% of the haploid complement. The designated Y-chromosome was near acrocentric. The specific distinction of M. xanthognathus and Microtus chrotorrhinus (Miller) was confirmed by the recognition of major differences in karyotype and differences in fundamental number. The distributional history of M. xanthognathus is briefly discussed.

Tumors of the Harderian gland occurred frequently in red-backed voles, Clethrionomys rutilus (Pallas), in a captive colony maintained since 1957. Although the tumors became obvious only in animals about a year old and older, early stage changes were histologically evident in glands from younger, clinically normal voles. The tumors ranged in type from poorly differentiated adenoma to adenocarcinoma, with invasion of adjacent tissues and characteristic deformation of the zygomata. Electron micrographs disclosed viral particles in the cytoplasm of glands from clinically normal animals as well as in glands showing malignant changes. More Information On The Coccidian Parasites (Protozoa: Eimeriidae) Of The Colorado Pika, Ochotona Princeps, With A Key To The Species, Donald W. Duszynski

The prevalence of 7 species of Coccidia is reported from 137 Colorado pikas, Ochotona princeps, collected on Mt. Evans, Clear Creek County, Colorado, during the summers of 1968, 1969, and 1971. Identification of the parasites was based on the structure of the unsporulated oocysts which, at least for those species that have been described to date from North American pika hosts, are highly distinctive for most species. Photographs illustrate the differences in size, shape, and form of the oocysts of the various species. A key to the Coccidia of pikas, based on the descriptions of sporulated oocysts, is presented.

Four trematodes, all new host records, were found in synaphobranchid eels from the continental slopes in the Gulf of Mexico and the Straits of Florida. Hypertrema ambovatum Manter, 1960 (Fellodistomidae), previously known only from near New Zealand, is reported from Synaphobranchus oregoni, including data in addition to the original description; Pseudopecoelus vulgaris (Manter, 1934) (Opecoelidae) and Hirudinella sp. (Hirudinellidae) are reported from S. affinis and S. oregoni, respectively, and commented upon briefly; and Helicometra robinsorum sp. n. (Opecoelidae) is described from S. oregoni and Ilyophis brunneus. The latter trematode most closely resembles H. antarcticae Holloway and Bier, …

A rubber band permanently girdled an Atlantic croaker, Micropogon undulatus, resulting in considerable malformation and pathological alterations of the fish. On 12 July 1973 at Graveline Bayou, Jackson County, Mississippi, Mrs. Buster Blades caught on hook and line a 175 mm standard length (102.1 g) croaker that she immediately separated from the rest of her catch as a suspected parasitized fish. Later upon closer examination, she realized that a rubber band encircled the fish, and so she brought the fish to us. The band had deformed the prepelvic isthmus, restricted movement of the pectoral fins, and permanently encircled the …

Heligmosomoides johnsoni sp. noy. is described from the cecum of the heather vole, Phenacomys intermedius Merriam, from the Olympic Mountains, Washington. The absence of longitudinal cuticular ridges dorsally separates H. johnsoni from species of Heligmosomoides other than H. hudsoni (Cameron, 1937), which occurs in varying lemmings, Dicrostonyx spp., and from which H. johnsoni is distinguished by its longer spicules, form of the dorsal ray, and other characters. Both Phenacomys and Dicrostonyx have a specialized cecum, with long villi around which the nematodes are found tightly coiled. The zoogeography of heligmosomid nematodes in Phenacomys is briefly discussed.

The estimate of needs in 1973 called for about 63 million USD for the next five years just to keep the US National Collections from disintegrating and to get them in shape to mount the huge effort needed to fully inventory the biota of the earth (a plan that was not even dreamed of until about the year 1995).

A non-sodic, non-saline sandy loam soil was salinized to anion-cation ratios similar to those naturally occurring in Iraq and California. The interactions of saline soils (conductivities 4, 8, 12 and 16 mmhos/cm) with a moderately salt-tolerant plant (Lycopersicon esculentum 'Marimond') and a plant parasitic nematode (Meloidogyne favanica) were investigated. Plant parasitic nematodes were shown to be an important modifying influence within the plant environment, either accentuating or ameliorating salinity stress effects.

Particles of fanleaf and yellow mosaic viruses are reported in the lumen of the esophagus of Xiphinerna index. Differences in cuticular morphology suggest differences in charged receptor sites which may offer an explanation for virus location and orderly arrangement.

Cathetocephalus thatcheri gen. et sp. n. is described from the spiral valve of the bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas (Valenciennes), taken in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast of Florida. A new family is erected for the new genus. The species most closely resembles Pillersium owenium Southwell, 1927, in that both possess a scolex which is perpendicular to the long axis of the strobila. It differs, however, in having a single neck and holdfast organ rather than a bifurcate neck with two bothridia. Also, the surfaces of the scolex differ from those of P. owenium by possessing fleshy papilliform …

Lecithaster helodes n. sp. is described from Mugil curema and M. cephalus. It differs from the closely related L. mugilis Yamaguti, 1970 by having four rather than three ovarian lobes and other minor differences. Discussions and measurements are presented for L. confusus Odhner, 1905, L. leiostomi Overstreet, 1970, Hysterolecitha elongata Manter, 1931, Aponurus pyriformis (Linton, 1910) n. comb., and A. elongatus Siddiqi & Cable, 1960. Branchadena Linton, 1910 is considered a synonym of Aponurus Looss, 1907. New host records are listed for some of the above hemiurid trematodes. Oocysts of Eimeria banffensis Lepp, Todd, and Samuel, 1972, Eimeria cryptobarretti sp. n., Eimeria princepsis sp. n., and Eimeria calentinei sp. n. are described from the Colorado pika, Ochotona princeps, collected from 3 mountain sites in Colorado. Subspherical oocysts of E. banffensis measure 23 to 34 by 18 to 25 μ (mean 27.6 by 23.0 μ) with ovoid sporocysts 10 to 16 by 7 to 10 μ (mean 12.5 by 8.5 μ). A micropyle, oocyst residuum, and polar granule are absent, but a sporocyst residuum, Stieda body, and substiedal body are present. The ellipsoidal oocysts of E. cryptobarretti measure …

Acanthobothrium urolophi sp. n. is described from a common stingaree, Urolophus testaceus, from South Australia. It differs from all other species in being apolytic and acraspedote, in having hooks 105-115 μ- long, one accessory sucker 80-90 wide on each bothridinm, and 40-72 testes in two longitudinal rows.

Plagioporus hypentelii sp. n. (Trematoda: Opecoelidae) is described from the intestine of the hogsucker, Hypentelium nigricans (LeSueur), in streams of Adams County, Pennsylvania. It most closely resembles P. serotinus Stafford, 1904, but differs from it chiefly in its less elongate shape, smaller size, smaller testes, ovary, and eggs, straight cirrus sac, in hosts and geographic location of the hosts.

Tests indicate that the oral administration of diethyl 2-chlorovinyl phosphate (SD1836) and 2,2 dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate (DDVP) plastic-incorporated pellets significantly reduces the intestinal nematode parasite Sterliadochona pedispicula in wild rainbow trout. No evidence of fish toxicity was noted with the treatments and dosages tested.

The toxicity of diethyl 2-chlorovinyl phosphate (SD1836) and 2,2 dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate (DDVP) was tested as an "in-water" treatment of rainbow trout and in vitro against the internal nematode parasite of fish, Sterliadochona peclispicula. As an "in-water" anthelmintic treatment SD1836 was 100% effective at concentrations of 25 fL liters/liter for 24 hr and 5 μ liters/liter for 72 hr; no toxic effects to rainbow trout were noted with these treatments.

English abstract: The cytogenetic characteristics of the varying lemming, Dicrostonyx torquatus stevensoni, (2n = 34), were investigated, and diploid chromosomal numbers were reported for four other nominal subspecies (exsul, nelsoni, richardsoni, and rubricatus) of the torquatus-group in North America. The diploid complements ranged from 30 to 44 chromosomes, and the fundamental number from 50 to 55. Chromosomal polymorphism was observed in all forms. In cross-breeding experiments, the mating of F1 progeny was not productive. It is safe to say that the taxonomy of Digenea from fishes and invertebrates from Chesapeake Bay is in need of considerable attention. First, the knowledge of what flukes are present is lacking, with the exception of a few scattered papers dealing with a limited number of species. A few such papers about adult Digenea from fishes are by Hopkins (1) and Anderson (2) and about larval forms from second intermediate hosts are by Stunkard and Uzmann (3), Dillon (4), and Perkins (5).
