Polymorphisms, Linkage And Mapping Of Four Enzyme Loci In The Fish Genus Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae), D C Morizot, M J Siciliano

Electrophoretic variants at four additional enzyme loci--two esterases (Est-2, Est-3), retinal lactate dehydrogenase (LDH-1) and mannose phosphate isomerase (MPI)--among three species and four subspecies of fish of the genus Xiphophorus were observed. Electrophoretic patterns in F1 hybrid heterozygotes confirmed the monomeric structures of MPI and the esterase and the tetrametric structure of LDH in these fishes. Variant alleles of all four loci displayed normal Mendelian segregation in backcross and F2 hybrids. Recombination data from backcross hybrids mapped with Haldane's mapping function indicate the four loci to be linked as Est-2--0.43--Est3--0.26--LDH-1--0.19--MPI. An Electron Microscopic Examination Of Spermiogenesis In The Recessive Sex-Linked Male-Sterile Mutant, Ms(1)10s Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Lizabeth A. Perkins

Electron microscopy of the testes of mutant ms(1)10S of Drosophila melanogaster is characterized by three major defects in the tail region of the developing spermatid. One is the apparent lack of paracrystalline body formation. The second is the loss of the primary derivative as development proceeds, and the third is the breakup and incorporation of the plasma membrane and periaxonemal sheath into membranous whorls. The mutant shows different patterns of axonemal breakup depending on the stage of differentiation in which degeneration begins. Degeneration continues until only cellular debris, scattered axonemal profiles and membranous whorls are all that are seen …

Electrophoretic Analysis Of Blood Serum Proteins In Three Species Of Water Snakes (Genus Nerodia), Phyllis J. Garnett

Serum from three species of water snakes (Nerodia rhombifera, N. erythrogaster and N. fasciata) from one geographic region was analyzed electrophoretically on cellulose acetate, and anodic mobility and relative concentration of the fractions were determined by a recording densitometer with an automatic integrator. Classification of fractions was based on mobility (Rf, values), and for identification purposes, bands were labeled in order of decreasing mobility (albumin and alpha₁, alpha₂, alpha₃, beta₁, beta₂, gamma₁, and gamma₂ globulins). Seven fractions were identified in each species with alpha₃ being absent from N. rhombifera and N. erythrogaster, and only one gamma fraction was observed in …

Genic Variation In White-Tailed Deer From Arkansas, Phyllis K. Price, Michael E. Cartwright, Mitchell J. Rogers

Liver and kidney samples of 33 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) representing three populations in Arkansas were examined with horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Of 17 loci examined, only PGM-1 and ES-2 exhibited polymorphism. Average individual heterozygosity, ranging from 2.3% to 4.7% with a mean of 3.1 %, was much lower than that reported for white-tailed deer in other parts of its range. The three populations examined in this study were highly similar based on Rogers' genetic similarity coefficient.

An Analysis Of Staggered Spondaic Word Test Performances Of Dyslexic Children And Their Parents, Nancy Jane Maxwell

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of a familial lineage for dyslexia by analyzing certain auditory processing characteristics of dyslexic children and their parents. The Staggered Spondaic Word test was administered to twenty-one dyslexic children, eight to thirteen years of age, their natural parents and normal reading siblings.

The experimental test data were tabulated and analyzed according to listening condition for each of the four groups: dyslexic children, normal reading siblings, affected parents and non-affected parents. The ampullariid Pomacea urceus uses its ctenidium and lung in respiration. The snails reach the surface with their siphon and ventilate their lung by withdrawing their head-foot in a pumping action. The lung gas also serves to change the buoyancy of the snails. After a ventilation a snail does not necessarily return to the same buoyancy level. Three Linked Enzyme Loci In Fishes: Implications In The Evolution Of Vertebrate Chromosomes, D C Morizot, D A Wright, M J Siciliano

A three-point linkage group comprised of loci coding for adenosine deaminase (ADA), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and 6-phospho-gluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD) is described in fish of the genus Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae). The alleles at loci in this group were shown to assort independently from the alleles at three other loci--isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2, and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase 1. Alleles at the latter three loci also assort independently from each other. Data were obtained by observing the segregation of electrophoretically variant alleles in reciprocal backcross hybrids derived from crosses between either X. helleri guentheri or X. h. strigatus and X. maculatus. Synchronous cultures of early G1 cells were exposed to UV and their ability to photoreactivate lethal and aberrational damage was determined as a function of time following UV exposure. Lesions leading to cell death were converted to a non-photoreactivable state before cells entered S phase, while lesions leading to chromosomal aberrations were converted to a non-photoreactivable state as the cells entered S phase. These results indicate that the intracellular mechanism which expresses photoreactivable UV-induced lesions in G1 cells as cell death is not identical to the mechanism which expresses such lesions as chromosomal aberrations, and the two mechanisms operate primarily …

The Department of Agriculture is concerned at the rapid disapearance of some poultry breeds and strains over recent years. This trend has resulted from the disposal of flocks previously held by commercial poultry breeders and fanciers.

One way to stop the trend of disappearance of poultry breeds is for interested people to maintain a breeding flock of pure-bred poultry, making the progeny available to others.

This article describes a small unit suitable for housing breeding fowls. The unit is based on designs developed by the Department of Agriculture.

The establishment of normal chromosomal patterns for a wide range of plants and animals has led to the recognition of abnormalities as well as their relationship to phenotypic irregularities. Research dealing with the expression of human karyotype is of prime interest; but, closely rivaling that is the genetic study of domestic animals which are of economic importance to man.

One observed anomaly which has come under scrutiny by cytogeneticists is that of the female member of a heterogeneous bovine twin pair, the freemartin. This is a sterile animal with internal morphology showing varying degrees of intersex. Cytogenetic studies reveal XX/XY …

For just on a century there has existed on Faure Island, off the mid Western Australian coast, a herd of white feral goats.

The fleece of these animals, while similar in appearance to Angora mohair, has characteristics which somewhat resemble the luxury fibre cashmere, in that it comprises a fine dense undercoat, which sheds in early spring, as well as the hairy outcoat typical of all goat breeds except the Angora.

Study Of Ultraviolet-Induces Chromatid And Chromosome Aberrations As A Function Of Dose In G1 Phase Vertebrate Tissue Cultures, Troy V. Orr, H. Gaston Griggs

G1 phase A8 Xenopus laevis (toad) and V79B Cricetulus griseus (hamster) tissue cultures were used to observe the frequency of ultraviolet-induced chromosomal aberrations as a function of dose. When cultures are irradiated with ultraviolet light, visible aberrations are virtually absent until a threshold of approximately 80 ergs mm⁻¹ is reached. Aberrations then occur as a nonlinear function of dose. Chromatid aberrations are by far the most prevalent until doses in excess of 200 ergs mm⁻¹ are administered, at which point chromosome aberrations become common.

Metaphase Configurations In Drosophila: A Comparison Of Endemic Hawaiian Species And Non-Endemic Species, Frances E. Clayton

The metaphase configurations of 400 strains from 63 species of Hawaiian Drosophila were determined from squash preparations of larval brain tissue or spermatogenic cells from adult testes. These karyotypes include configurations from seven species not previously described. Metaphases of 148 Hawaiian species have been recorded, including species of the "picture-wing" group, the "modified mouthpart" group, and the "bristle-foot" group. A comparison between Hawaiian species and non-endemic species was made on the basis of chromosome numbers and configurations. Among the Hawaiian species, 85.8% have retained the primitive haploid configuration of five rods and one dot compared with only 34.8% of species …

Electrophoretic Patterns Of Serum Proteins In Two Subspecies Of Odocoileus Virginianus, Greg S. Jackman, Phyllis J. Garnett

Cellulose acetate electrophoresis revealed six monomorphic forms of serum protein in natural populations of two subspecies of white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus virginianus from Tennessee and Odocoileus virginianus macroura from Arkansas. The fixed pattern of serum proteins in the two populations indicates a lack of genetic variation in the loci controlling these proteins. However, electrophoresis revealed different hemoglobin phenotypes in the two subspecies. This finding indicates that further study is needed to determine whether or not there are genetic differences in the hemoglobin forms

In neuroblast cells homologous chromosomes tend to pair during prophase of mitosis. Heterochromatic elements of homologous chromosomes are widely separated in very early prophase, at which time the euchromatin is poorly stained. Pairing is intimate for euchromatic portions of chromosomes in early and middle prophase with chiasmata frequently present. Homologous chromosomes most commonly lie side-by-side in late prophase and metaphase. Statistical data are presented to show the frequency of intimate pairing in prophase and side by side pairing in metaphase.

This thesis is a report on the analysis of family data gathered to test the simple recessive hypothesis for the inability to taste phenyl-thio-urea (P.T.C.). The simple recessive hypothesis states that the inability of a minority of persons to taste high concentrations of P.T.C. is due to the action of an autosomal recessive gene in the homozygous condition.

The results of experimentation approximately twenty years ago with variuos bacteriophages by Ralston and Krueger16, Anderson and Felix1, Luria and Human12, and by Bertani and Weigle2 have shown that the host range of a given phage depends directly on the bacterial strain on which the phage has last propagated. This event came to be known as host-induced modification or host-controlled variation. The ry+ gene of Drosophila melanogaster and its associated enzyme, xanthine dehydrogenase, were employed in an analysis of the relationship between regulation and the location of a gene in the genome. Enzyme assays as an indication of gene activity were performed on genotypes containing zero, one and two doses of ry+ genes. Xanthine dehydrogenase activity of rosy genes in normal and relocated positions was determined during development.

The results indicate: 1) the gene ry+ is differentially active during ontogeny; 2) the activity during ontogeny is proportional to the number of ry+ genes present in the genome; …
