It is essential that land use decisions made by local administrations be compatible with sustainable use and management principles of natural resources. In this study, we evaluated the use potential and suitability of 27 land mapping units of 4,891 ha in Antakya for three different land use types: (1) recreation- reforestation, (2) residence and (3) arable farming. For this purpose, land suitability evaluation was carried out using soil and land data, the ŞENOL land evaluation system, and a PC compatible ILSEN software package. The Reaction Of Crotonic Anhydride With Scots And Corsican Pine: Investigation Of Kinetic Profiles And Determination Of Activation Energies, Ni̇lgül Özmen, Ni̇hat Sami̇ Çeti̇n

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The kinetics of the reaction of crotonic anhydride with Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Corsican pine (Pinus nigra) using pyridine as catalyst/solvent was investigated and activation energies for the initial reaction determined. Activation energies were calculated from the Arrhenius equation using rate data obtained from time-course experiments repeated at several temperatures. In one method, reaction constants (k) were determined experimentally, while in the other method initial rates were extrapolated at time zero. With the rate constant method, activation energy values for Scots and Corsican pine were calculated as 39.0 (±5.8) and 30.3 (±6.8) kJ mol^{-1}, respectively. The method of initial …

This study was conducted to estimate the effect of salinity on crop yield by employing a geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing technologies. The saline soils of Arıcan village, located in the southeastern part of Harran Plain, were studied. Surface soil samples representing each soil series in the study area were collected and analyzed to generate an electrical conductivity (EC) map of the study area soils. Plant density and pruning systems play a key role in the effective use of the area inside the greenhouse. Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivars, Amazon-long green and Balo bell-shape type, were grown in the winter cultivation period in a glasshouse. A constant space of 80 cm between rows with different within-row spacings (45 cm, 30 cm and 15 cm) and shoot numbers (between one and four shoots per plant) were applied to optimize plant density and number of shoots. Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) is an important pest in cucumber greenhouses in Çamönü (Menderes, İzmir), Turkey. This study was carried out during the spring and autumn production seasons in 1999 and 2000 in two greenhouses belonging to a local farmer, each of them 1000 m^2 in size. The infested leaves from insecticide-treated and non-treated greenhouses were sampled weekly. The leaves were sampled weekly from both greenhouses and kept in our laboratory under observation to compare the number of emerging leafminer adults. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficiency of fogging system (FS) for greenhouses. The experiments were carried out in a multi-span plastic greenhouse (PG), 105.6 m wide and 205 m long, made of 11 spans. The FS consists of a water softener and filters to prevent nozzle clogging, a water reservoir, pumps and a pressure regulator, and fog generating nozzles (FGN). The required pressure for FGN was 4.5 atm. Three nozzle lines with 82 FGN were installed in each span of the PG. At each nozzle line, 82 FGN were uniformly located at 2.5 m nozzle spacing. …

Deforestation rates in México are about 670,000 ha/year. This threatens the richness of forest genetic resources in México, causing the disappearance of locally adapted populations and rare and endangered pine species. México is one of the six megadiverse countries in the world, with half of the world’s Pinus species. Pinus is one of the most economically and ecologically important forest genera in México. We suggest that delineation of seed zones and the establishment of a network of Forest Genetic Resource Conservation Units (FGRCUs), linked with forest management and ecological restoration programs will protect this valuable resource. Broad-scale information in concert with conservation of individual species must be used to develop conservation priorities and a more integrated ecosystem protection strategy. In 1999 the United States Forest Service initiated an approach for the 1.2 x 106 ha of national grasslands in the Northern Great Plains to fulfill the requirement to maintain viable populations of all native and desirable introduced vertebrate and plant species. The challenge was threefold: 1) develop basic building blocks in the conservation planning approach, 2) apply the approach to national grasslands, and 3) overcome differences that may exist in agency-specific legal and policy requirements. A strawberry plant is considered day-neutral if it can form flower buds under both long and short day conditions; however, researchers use different methods to score day-neutrality. We studied the relationship among several different evaluation methods for day-neutrality and analyzed the possibility that greenhouse screens can be used to predict field flowering performance. Phenotypic plasticity, such as morphological and behavioral changes in response to predators, is common in larval anurans. Less is known about inducible defenses in the embryonic stages of development. We investigated the predation risk imposed by crayfish (Procambarus nigrocinctus) on southern leopard frog (Rana sphenocephala) eggs aud whether crayfish presence induces a change in the timing of hatching of R. sphenocephala eggs. We found that crayfish significantly reduce the hatching success of R. sphenocephala eggs by eating them and that eggs hatch significantly faster in the presence of crayfish than when crayfish are not present. The Influence Of Predator Threat On The Timing Of A Life-History Switch Point: Predator-Induced Hatching In The Southern Leopard Frog (Rana Sphenocephala), James B. Johnson, Daniel Saenz, Cory K. Adams, Richard N. Conner

We tested the hypotheses that potential egg predators, crayfish Procambarus nigrocinctus and dytiscid Cybister sp. larvae, would accelerate the timing of hatching and that a larval predator, dragonfly naiad Anax junius, would delay hatching in the southern leopard frog (Rana sphenocephala). We also tested the hypothesis that differences in response would be proportional to predator lethality. Our results indicate that our hypotheses were partially supported. The presence of an efficient egg predator (crayfish) induces hatching faster than a less efficient predator (dytiscid larvae). However, the presence of a larval predator (naiads) did not delay hatching. Eggs that …

In eastern Anatolia, the sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) has been grown as a confectionary crop for a long time, but oilseed sunflower types have more recently been grown commercially. No information on the performance of oilseed sunflower hybrids for this region is, however, available. Therefore, during the 1998 and 2001 growing seasons, a field experiment was conducted to evaluate the agronomic performances and genotypic differences of some sunflower hybrids under Erzurum conditions. The relation between satellite measurements of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), cumulated over the growing season, and inventory estimates of forest woody biomass carbon is estimated statistically with data from 167 provinces and states in six countries (Canada, Finland, Norway, Russia and the USA for a single time period and Sweden for two periods). Statistical tests indicate that the regression model can be used to represent the relation between forest biomass and NDVI across spatial, temporal and ecological scales for relatively long time scales. The status, distribution, and abundance of North Dakota's bird life was summarized several times during the twentieth century (e.g., Wood 1923, Bailey 1926, Stewart 1971, Stewart 1975). The most recent official North Dakota state bird list was Faanes and Stewart (1982). The state's avifauna has changed markedly since that list was published. In an attempt to document some of those changes, the North Dakota Natural Science Society formed the North Dakota Ornithological Records Committee in 1979. That committee's goals were to evaluate and archive documentations of rare bird sighting and to periodically revise the official state bird list. Herein we …

Hurricane Georges passed over mature dry forest near Guánica, Puerto Rico in September, 1998. The trees of the dense, short-statured Guánica Forest have a multi-stemmed structure unique to the West Indies in the neo-tropics, a characteristic that has been difficult to explain. Following the hurricane, we measured sprout development below breast height on 1407 stems to assess how response to hurricane disturbance may influence dry forest structure. Basal sprouting increased 8-14 fold after Hurricane Georges. Basal sprouting was found on al- most 68% of damaged stems and, notably, on about 32% of undamaged stems. The primary goal of many nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) landowners, forestry consultants, and timber industry professionals is to increase revenues from their forestland. Most often, increased revenues are a result of harvesting timber stands from the site. However, the chances of increased revenues can be greatly reduced if the stands are improperly managed or voluntary Best Management Practices (BMPs) guidelines are not followed.

We examined resin chemistry of loblolly (Pinus taeda) and shortleaf (P. echinata) pines selected as cavity trees by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) in eastern Texas. We sampled resin from (1) pines selected by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers that contained naturally excavated active cavities, (2) pines selected by forest biologists that contained artificially installed cavity inserts and were actively being used by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, and (3) control pines of similar age and appearance to the active cavity trees. Understanding the responses of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to controlled dog hunting can aid in the effective implementation of canine-assisted population management strategies. We examined the 24-h diel movements of 13 radio-collared female deer exposed to dog hunting on the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina, where regulated dog hunting has occurred since 1965. We compared diel home range size, rate of travel, and distance between extreme diel locations before, during, and after hunts from 14 September-14 December 2002. Since the U.S. is the largest emitter of carbon dioxide (CO2), it has become crucial to develop options that are both cost effective and supportive of sustainable development to reduce atmospheric CO2. Electric utility companies have the options of reducing their use of fossil fuels, switching to alternative energy sources, increasing efficiency, or offsetting carbon emissions. This study determined the cost and profitability of sequestering carbon in green ash plantations, and the number of tons of carbon that can be sequestered. N-glycan structures of recombinant human serum transferrin (hTf) expressed by Lymantria dispar (gypsy moth) 652Y cells were determined. The gene encoding hTf was incorporated into a Lymantria dispar nucleopolyhedrovirus (LdMNPV) under the control of the polyhedrin promoter. This virus was then used to infect Ld652Y cells, and the recombinant protein was harvested at 120 h postinfection. N-glycans were released from the purified recombinant human serum transferrin and derivatized with 2-aminopyridine; the glycan structures were analyzed by a two-dimensional HPLC and MALDI-TOF MS. The relation between satellite measurements of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), cumulated over the growing season, and inventory estimates of forest woody biomass carbon is estimated statistically with data from 167 provinces and states in six countries (Canada, Finland, Norway, Russia and the USA for a single time period and Sweden for two periods). Statistical tests indicate that the regression model can be used to represent the relation between forest biomass and NDVI across spatial, temporal and ecological scales for relatively long time scales. Combining ability and heterosis were determined in a population obtained from the half diallel crossing of 6 different cotton genotypes for yield components and fiber quality parameters. For breeding purposes, to improve the investigated characters some suitable parents were selected for different characters: DPL 5690 for number of bolls per plant, Acala SJ-5 for boll weight and fiber length; Nazilli-84 and Carmen for seed cotton yield and lint percentage; Tamcot CAMD-E for earliness and fiber fineness; and PD 6168 for fiber strength. This study was conducted to determine the presence of plum pox virus (PPV) (family Potyviridae, genus Potyvirus) in different regions of Turkey and to characterize PPV isolates by serological and molecular techniques, including ELISA and PCR/ RFLP. Thus, leaf samples from different stone fruit species (almond, apricot, nectarine, peach, plum and sour and sweet cherry) exhibiting various types of symptoms related to PPV were collected from different parts of the canopy from randomly selected orchards in the main stone fruit growing areas in Turkey, except for Malatya province.
