Yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis L.) is an invasive weed introduced from the Mediterranean region. It predominantly infests rangelands in the western United States. The effects of water potential on germination were studied in six provenances of Pinus brutia from different bioclimatic zones in Turkey. Water potentials between 0 and -8 bars were obtained using polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG-6000) solutions. Seeds were kept for 28 d in light (12 h photoperiod at 1000 lux) and at 20 ± 0.5 ^oC. A decrease in water potential produced a marked reduction in germination percentage, germination speed and germination value. Significant variations between the provenances were found. The aim of this study was to develop an effective procedure for detecting land use/land cover (LU/LC) changes resulting from agricultural encroachment on eastern Mediterranean coastal dunes by using remote-sensing techniques. Historic LU/LC information was extracted from aerial photos taken in 1976 and IKONOS imagery was acquired in 2002 to determine the current LU/LC pattern. The remotely sensed aerial and satellite data were classified by integrating spectral information with measures of texture, in the form of statistics derived from the variance, co-occurrence matrix and variogram. The objectives of this study were to identify suitable plant species for mass rearing and to determine some biological characteristics of the predator Serangium montazerii Fürsch (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) used in the biological control of Dialeurodes citri (Ashmead) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). The development time, mortality rate, preoviposition, oviposition and postoviposition periods and fecundity of S. montazerii were studied on various host plants using Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). Two cotton (Çukurova-1518 and Deltapine) and two eggplant (Pala and Çukurova topağı) cultivars were used at 25 ºC and 65 ± 5% RH in growth chambers. Current focus on forest conservation and forest sustainability has increased the level of attention given to measures of ground flora in forest ecosystems. Traditionally, such data are collected via time- and resource-intensive methods of field identification, clipping, and weighing. With increased focus on community composition and structure measures of forest ground flora, the manner in which these data are collected must change. This project uses color and color infrared digital cameras to proximally sense forest ground flora and to develop regression models to predict green and dry biomass (g/m^) from the proximally sensed data. Ascochyta blight, caused by Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Lab., is the most important disease in the chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in many countries, including Turkey. Efforts to control the disease were made using host-plant resistance as the most efficient and economical way. A total of 41 exotic genotypes were evaluated for resistance to A. rabiei and also yield and yield criteria near Antalya in the west Mediterranean region of Turkey in the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 seasons. Domesticated species differ from their wild ancestors and relatives for a set of traits that is known as the domestication syndrome. The most important syndrome traits include growth habit, flowering time, seed dispersal, gigantism and morphological diversity. This paper reviews what is known about the genetic control of domestication traits with an emphasis on comparative analyses that examine this control in two or more crop species. Such analyses indicate that although most domestication traits are quantitatively controlled, the dramatic morphological changes that accompanied domestication may be due to relatively few genes. The purpose of this paper is to examine the marketing structure of milk processors, factors influencing production and problems faced by firms following recent economic conditions in the Trakya region. Dairy cattle production is more developed in the research area than in other regions. In addition, the region has played an important role with its high milk processing capacity. The research results indicate that the dairy industry has important problems, such as an insufficient and low quality milk supply, and poor hygiene and marketing. In particular, a large number of small-and medium-sized milk processors face extensive hygiene and marketing problems. …

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of thermal screens made of clear polyethylene (PE) and polyester material on the microclimate and overall heat loss coefficient in plastic tunnel greenhouses. The dimensions of the plastic tunnels were: width 6 m, length 20 m and height 3 m. Three different installations were used: (1) a single cover without a screen (as a control); (2) a single cover with a PE screen; and (3) a single cover with a polyester screen. The forage yield and quality of common vetch, grasspea and barley grown alone and as mixtures were investigated in field experiments conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture, Gaziosmanpaşa University, in 2001 and 2002. The highest green forage (39.65 t ha^{-1}) and dry matter yields (10.71 t ha^{-1}) were obtained from the mixture including 25% common vetch and 75% barley, while the highest total seed yield (2.95 t ha^{-1}) was obtained from the mixture including 25% grasspea and 75% barley. This experiment was conducted in Mut-Mersin between 1997 and 2001 to determine the effects of seedling and GF-31 rootstocks on the yield and quality of fruits of Tokaloğlu, Precoce De Tyrinthe, Joubert Foulon, Canino, Sakıt 6, Beliana, Priana and Early Kishnevski table apricot cultivars. Fruit yields were highest on apricot seedling rootstocks for all cultivars. Yields (kg tree^{-1}) ranged between 14.66 kg (Tokaloğlu) and 63.06 kg (Priana) on apricot seedling rootstocks and between 13.6 kg (Sakıt 6) and 41.13 kg (Priana) on Myrobalan GF-31 rootstock in 2001. In this study, 6 comparative indicators for the assessment of irrigation system performance were applied to 12 irrigation schemes, which were components of the Southeastern Anatolian Project, for the period 1997-2001. The output per unit cropped area, output per unit command, output per unit irrigation supply, output per unit water consumed, relative water supply and irrigation ratio were calculated as 1223-9436 $ ha^{-1}, 308-5771 $ ha^{-1}, 0.12-2.16 $ m^{-3}, 0.45-2.92 $ m^{-3}, 1.00-5.90, and 7-100%, respectively. An Econometric Analysis Of Apricot Supply And Export Demand In Turkey, İlkay Dellal, A. Ali̇ Koç

This study estimates a supply model for apricots and an export demand model for dried apricots for Turkey to provide unit-free measure coefficients for better supply and marketing management. Using parameter estimates from the models and sample average data, elasticities of long-run supply, price-yield and export of dried apricots were computed as 0.72, 0.54 and -0.87 respectively. From the price dependent export demand model, the price flexibility of dried apricots was calculated as -0.71. Tomatoes were grown in a plastic greenhouse under 2 irrigation programmes and four N-fertiliser concentrations (0, 100, 150 and 200 mg N l^{-1}) of irrigation water. P and K concentrations were kept constant at 30 and 200 mg l^{-1}, respectively, for all N treatments. A drip irrigation system with single laterals centred between the plant rows, spaced 50 cm apart was used for irrigation as well as for feeding fertiliser solution (i.e. fertigation) during the experiment. A greenhouse and a 1-year field study were conducted during the cropping season on the effects of B on yield and some yield components of bread (Triticum aestivum L, cv. Bezostaja) and durum (Triticum durum L. cv. Kiziltan) wheat cultivars in a B-deficient soil (0.68 mg kg^{-1}, NH4OAc extractable). Boron was applied as H_3BO_3 at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mg B kg^{-1} in the greenhouse study and 0, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 kg B ha^{-1} in the field study. Wood plastic composites (WPCs) have gained popularity as building materials because of their usefulness in replacing solid wood in a variety of applications. These composites are promoted as being low-maintenance, high-durability products. However, it has been shown that WPCs exposed to weathering may experience a color change and/or loss in mechanical properties. An important requirement for building materials used in outdoor applications is the retention of their aesthetic qualities and mechanical properties during service life. Geomorphology is a dominant factor influencing vegetation distribution in the southern Appalachians, and quantifying landform characteristics is increasingly important for forest ecosystem classification. This study used slope gradient and two previously published geomorphic indices, terrain shape index and landform index that quantify landform shape and protection, to develop a field-based landform quantification system at four study areas in the southern Appalachians. Six major landform types (ridgetops, nose slopes, linear hillslopes, coves, stream ravines, and stream bottoms) exhibited quantitatively different characteristics, and these differences among landforms were not evident when using only categorical landform descriptions (e.g., convex, concave) that have been …

It has been almost forty years since the passage of the 1964 Wilderness Act and the establishment of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Forty years later, we still have not seen a wilderness that is not a surface environment. There exist neither subterranean nor marine wilderness areas.
