Poultry production is a growing industry in East Texas, generating about 360,000 m tons of broiler litter each year as a by-product for application on pasturelands. Grab samples of fecal coliform (FC) and fecal streptococcus (FS) were collected monthly between March and December 1996 and FC and E-coli samples were collected weekly between July and October 2001 at six sites on the Waffelo and Terrapin Creeks in Nacogdoches County, Texas to assess possible impacts of poultry litter application on bacterial water quality. Recent studies on potential mercury (Hg) contamination of fish from East Texas lakes and waterways have caused concern about mercury levels in East Texas waters. Historical records of Hg concentrations in 33 East Texas streams showed that median concentrations for each stream segment were no different than other U.S. streams. All the means and medians for stream segments having at least 20 recorded measurements were less than Texas (2.4 µg/L) water quality standards. Water samples collected in December 1995 and March 1996 from 6 different stream sites in Nacogdoches County had concentrations similar to historical records. Due to biological magnification, …

Aspen clones of an aspen-dominated community in Southwestern Utah are declining, some having experienced high mortality coupled with in sufficient regeneration. The objectives of this study were to (I) determine if decadent, non-regenerating mature aspen stands could be regenerated through disturbance of the 111 auxin/cytokinin hormone relationship by clearcutting; (2) determine the extent of ungulate use of regenerating aspen ramets. Clearcuts were made in late summer of 2001 in 10 different clones that exhibited various levels of decline on a continuum from relatively healthy to extremely deteriorated. Species Pairwise Associations Over Nine Years Of Secondary Succession: Assessing Alternative Explanations And Successional Mechanisms, Lara R. Rozzell

The importance and mechanisms of species interactions are undetermined in most successional systems. I used correlations and null modeling to detect pairwise species associations between 33 plant species in the first nine years of secondary succession after logging and burning in a western Oregon Cascade forest. I tested for correlations between each species and soil nutrients, nonvegetative ground cover, and surrounding vegetation. More positive than negative associations were found at all sampling times. The proportion of positive associations decreased and negative associations increased through time. Up to 42% of associations at a sampling time were explicable by shared positive correlations …

The impetus for this research was the increasing threat of catastrophic wildfires resulting from the accumulation of fuels across the West. Guided by the priorities, goals, and guiding principles outlined by the national fire plan (NFP), the objective was to identify those areas within a pinyon-juniper woodland-dominated landscape with the highest hazard of catastrophic wildfire. Statistical and graphical analysis techniques were applied to disc refining operations in order to understand the relationship between strength and drainage properties for a given stock. Two refining variables of refining energy and revolutionary velocity were varied during the experiment. The calculated variable of refining intensity was used to represent these refining variables. The relationship between the refining energy, strength, and drainage properties for northern softwood, northern hardwood, and printing grade recycled stock was explored. The particle size of commercially produced printing inks available for each of the printing processes, such as letterpress, lithography, flexography, rotogravure and screen-printing was completed. The study of their stability on the press, as well as the examination of the effect of particle size on printability and color balance was investigated. This was demonstrated on several gravure and flexo printing trials lasting for several hours.

Infrared units are widely used in paper coating drying to initiate evaporation and quickly reach solids immobilization point. Thermal efficiency of IR units can be improved by increasing absorption of coating color. Borate compounds have shown good IR absorption at wavelengths typical to commercial IR units.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the compatibility of selected borate-containing compounds with the primary components of the paper coatings like clays, carbonates, and some binders.

This study documented nest success, nest initiation chronology and nest site selection for interior least terns (Sterna antillarum athalassos) along the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River in Childress County, Texas during 1998. Terns experienced

a 65% nest success rate (Mayfield estimate 71 %) and clutch sizes ranged from 1 3 eggs (x = 2.25) for 20 nests. Seventy percent of all nests were initiated during the first 20 days of June, which coincided with the highest number of adult terns observed on the study site. Non-industrial private forest (NIPF) landowners have played an increasingly important role in the nation's timber economy. Nearly 70% of the forestland in the South is owned by NIPF landowners (Powell et al., 1994). In Mississippi alone, these landowners control approximately 66% of the state's forestland base (Hartsell and London, 1995). Therefore, NIPF landowners are expected to provide a large portion of the state's supply of timber. However, whether they do so depends largely on how their timberlands are managed. Forest management decisions of NIPF landowners can impact future timber supply due to the magnitude of their collective ownership.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is rated as moderately salt tolerant and it can produce profitable crops on saline soils. It is slightly more tolerant of salinity than barley but is more tolerant than wheat. Because salinity reduces germination and delays emergence, safflower stands tend to be irregular and crop yield is depressed. However, some varieties are less affected by salinity than others. In this study the salt tolerance of stock (Matthiola tricuspidata) was investigated. For this purpose, a control and 4 different concentrations of NaCl + CaCl_2 were applied to plants grown under greenhouse conditions. Na, Cl and electrical conductivity (EC) analyses were conducted in soil, plant and leached samples. Yield, plant growth parameters and plant dry matter were also determined. All plants survived until the end of the experiments. Treatments affected the ion content and EC of leached and soil samples significantly. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of the litter chemistry of spruce (Picea orientalis), pine (Pinus sylvestris) and chestnut (Castanea sativa) grown in the Artvin region on their decomposition rates. Freshly fallen litters from these species were analysed for total carbon, nitrogen, lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. The litterbag technique was used to determine their mass loss in the field for 2 years. Specimens prepared from Calabrian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) wood were treated with borate-supplemented aqueous solutions of Calabrian pine bark powder, acorn powder, sumach leaf powder and gall-nut powder. Then, fire test methods containing flame source, without flame source and glowing stages was performed according to the ASTM E 160-50 American Standard. Three softwood species of Bornmulleriana fir (Abies bornmulleriana Mattf.), Eastern spruce (Picea orientalis Lipsky), and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) grown indigenously in Turkey were selected to obtain a comparison among the green volume (GV), oven dry (OD) and maximum moisture content (MMC) methods.
