Department Of Agriculture Services : The Botany Branch And The W.A. Herbarium, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALTHOUGH the flora of Western Australia strongly attracted early botanists and collectors, it was virtually neglected by settlers faced with a century or more of hard pioneering.

Only recently has enthusiasm for our remarkable flora developed within the State and, with the formation of sponsoring societies and the establishment of the Kings Park Botanic Gardens, native species have become popular in home and civic gardens.

Poultry Behaviour As It Affects Management, R H. Morris

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

UNDER natural conditions animals have considerable control over their movements and over their proximity to each other.

Today, however, there is a trend in animal husbandry towards greater intensificaton, and this is most evident in the poultry industry.

An Estimate Of Winter Utilization Of The Cedar Creek Natural History Area By The White-Tailed Deer, L. D. Frenzel Jr.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Estimates of utilization of the Cedar Creek Natural History Area by the white-toiled deer (Odocoileus virginianus borealis) during the winters of 1963 and 1964 were mode using the deer-drive method. The 1964 estimate is considered the more realistic index of winter utilization by deer of the area because of increased efficiency of the drive, weather conditions favoring deer-drive technics, and agreement with results of pellet-count studies mode independently on the area.

Rabbit Fumigation, C D. Gooding Jan 1963

Rabbit Fumigation, C D. Gooding

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Not all poisons act by absorption from the alimentary tract or through the skin, the fumigants are a big group of poisons used in pest control which act on the animal after being absorbed through the lungs.

FUMIGATION as it is now used in Western Australia is not always an economical way of treating whole farm properties. It should only be used on its own in areas where it is impossible to use other more permanent methods such as warren destruction.

Spraying For Grasshopper Control, T J. Tozer Jan 1963

Spraying For Grasshopper Control, T J. Tozer

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A BIG increase in cereal growing in the "hopper" belt has brought a general improvement in the grasshopper situation over the past few years.

This highlights the emphasis entomologists have placed on cultivation as the best known way of controlling grasshoppers.

Comparison Of Spider Populations Of Ground Stratum In Arkansas Pasture And Adjacent Cultivated Field, W. H. Whitcomb, Harriet Exline, Maxine Hite Jan 1963

Comparison Of Spider Populations Of Ground Stratum In Arkansas Pasture And Adjacent Cultivated Field, W. H. Whitcomb, Harriet Exline, Maxine Hite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Of 64 species of spiders taken from the ground stratum of an Arkansas pasture and adjoining cotton field, only 26 were common to both. Twenty-two were collected only in the cotton field; 16, only in the pasture. Many of the 18 species of lycosids were taken in greater numbers in the cultivated field, especially Pardosa milvina and Lycosa helluo. Eight species of lycosids were found only in the cotton field; two, only in the pasture. Only Schizocosa avida, of the better represented lycosids, appeared to show no preference. Similar relationships are given for dictynids, erigonids, linyphiids, oxyopids, gnaphosids, clubionids, thomisids, …

Bee Farming : Honey Flora Of Western Australia, R S. Coleman Jan 1962

Bee Farming : Honey Flora Of Western Australia, R S. Coleman

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A GOOD knowledge of the nectar producing plants of the State is essential for success in commercial beekeeping.

The beekeeper who has a good knowledge of which plants produce good flows, when the flows might be expected, and where good stands of those plants may be found is the one who has the best chance of success.

Grazing To Control Pasture Composition, R A. Bettenay Jan 1962

Grazing To Control Pasture Composition, R A. Bettenay

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

APART from grazing management, there are a number of means by which the farmer can influence pasture composition.

With the exception of grazing, all of these processes involve recurring costs, so it is important to exert the utmost possible control through the grazing animal.

Field Techniques For Sexing And Aging Game Animals, Donald R. Thompson Jan 1958

Field Techniques For Sexing And Aging Game Animals, Donald R. Thompson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

The purpose of this booklet is to provide a ready field reference for identification, sexing and aging of common game species. It has purposely been kept in simplified form, presenting only those techniques which can commonly be applied in the field and avoiding those which would require special equipment and skills. Untrained personnel should be given demonstrations of the techniques, and thereafter this reference should serve as a reminder. It is not expected that the reference could successfully be used without such demonstration. Certain of the techniques such as cloaca! examination of waterfowl may require considerable practice by the individual. …
