Ecology Of The Malay Civet (Viverra Tangalunga) In A Logged And An Unlogged Forest In Sabah, East Malaysia, Christina P. Colon
Publications and Research
Malay civets in a dipterocarp rain forest were studied from December, 1995, through June, 1997, in the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve in Sabah, East Malaysia. To investigate the basic ecology of this species and explore the potential impact of selective logging, data on home range, activity and diet were collected on study animals in an unlogged and a selectively logged forest, and comparisons made.
Density in the unlogged forest was 1/0.46 km2 , and 1/1.07 km2 in the logged forest. Mean home range size based on a 95% minimum convex polygon was 110 ha. and did not differ …

Alpha Status, Dominance, And Division Of Labor In Wolf Packs, L. David Mech
Alpha Status, Dominance, And Division Of Labor In Wolf Packs, L. David Mech
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The prevailing view of a wolf (Canis lupus) pack is that of a group of individuals ever vying for dominance but held in check by the “alpha” pair, the alpha male and alpha female. Most research on the social dynamics of wolf packs, however, has been conducted on non-natural assortments of captive wolves. Here I describe the wolf-pack social order as it occurs in nature, discuss the alpha concept and social dominance and submission, and present data on the precise relationships among members in free-living packs, based on a literature review and 13 summers of observations of wolves …

The purpose of the newsletter is to receive details of new projects, re-assessments of the status of relevant species, interesting discoveries or observations, taxonomic changes, conservation successes or threats and anything else that members might find interesting. We would like in future issues to produce a list of relevant publications which appear during the year in order to keep members up-to-date with current information. We will publish requests for contacts or information, advertisements for conferences and workshops and news of projects and project proposals.

1999 Nebraska Central Mixedgrass Prairie Rapid Ecological Assessment, Mike Bullerman
1999 Nebraska Central Mixedgrass Prairie Rapid Ecological Assessment, Mike Bullerman
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
This document has been prepared in partial fulfillment of the 1999 Central Mixedgrass Prairie ecoregion [CMGP] Rapid Ecological Assessment [REA] contract between the Nebraska Chapter of The Nature Conservancy [TNC] and Michael J. Bullerman [“contractor”]. The contract provided for the survey of selected untilled landscapes within the Nebraska portion of the CMGP ecoregion, excluding the Sandhills. The objectives of this study were to:
1) Identify relatively intact CMGP landscapes within the state of Nebraska,
2) Determine the ecological condition, threats, unique features, and conservation potential of these landscapes,
3) Determine land use practices implemented by landowners,
4) Determine landowner attitudes …
1999 Wildlife Management Area Threatened And Endangered Species Inventory, Final Report, Robert F. Steinauer
1999 Wildlife Management Area Threatened And Endangered Species Inventory, Final Report, Robert F. Steinauer
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
This study was undertaken to determine the extent of threatened and endangered (T&E) species habitats and high-quality native plant communities on Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program (NHP) is responsible for environmental reviews of state projects that may impact threatened and endangered (T&E) species in Nebraska, including proposed management actions on state Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). These environmental reviews require a significant amount of NHP staff time, and frequently find no adverse impacts associated with the proposed management actions. This survey was undertaken to improve Nebraska Game and Parks Commissions (NGPC) …
