Validation Of The Effects Of Small Differences In Dietary Metabolizable Energy And Feed Restriction In First-Cycle Laying Hens, G. R. Murugesan, M. E. Persia
G. R. Murugesan
An experiment was conducted to evaluate energy utilization of laying hens fed diets containing 2 ME concentrations, using response criteria including performance, BW, abdominal fat pad, and energy digestibility. The experiment was a 2 × 2 factorial with 2 feeding regimens (ad libitum and restriction fed), and 2 dietary ME levels [2,880 kcal/kg of ME (CON); and 2,790 kcal/kg of ME (LME)]. A total of 60 Hy-Line W36 first-cycle laying hens were fed experimental diets, resulting in 15 individually caged hens for each of the 4 treatments. Hens in the restriction-fed group were fed 90 g of feed per day. …
Response Of Broiler Chickens To Variation In Dietary Nutrient Content, Sarah Diane Goodgame
Response Of Broiler Chickens To Variation In Dietary Nutrient Content, Sarah Diane Goodgame
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Rising feed costs, environmental pollution concerns targeted at animal agriculture, a worldwide focus on sustainability and the never ending battle to improve production and efficiency within the poultry industry challenges nutritionists to focus on products to improve nutrient digestibility and decrease feed costs while at the same time maximizing performance. The research presented in this dissertation focuses on improving nutrient utilization of protein sources with protein liberating enzymes currently available commercially. The research also conducted addresses the addition of crystalline amino acids valine and isoleucine and their effect on improving efficiency of broilers.
The first research project compared the efficacy …

Local Food Systems
Like everyone else in these troubled economic times, Mainers are looking for ways to create jobs that will remain relevant and vital in a global economy, that cannot be outsourced, and that will regenerate rather than exploit our natural resources.
A growing number of people believe that a food system rooted in local farms, fisheries, and food production and distribution enterprises can strengthen Maine’s economy and its communities’ health, thereby increasing revenue and decreasing an expense that is crippling government agencies and individuals alike – healthcare. Business people who want to make a living related to food, and public and …

Rapid Effects Of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 On Calcium Uptake In Isolated Chick Enterocytes, Ruta Phadnis
Rapid Effects Of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 On Calcium Uptake In Isolated Chick Enterocytes, Ruta Phadnis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
25-Hydroxyvitamin D3[25(OH)D3] is a metabolite of vitamin D3 that has long been considered to be an inactive precursor of the hormonally active metabolite 1,25- dihydroxyvitamin D3[l,25(OH)2D3]; consequently very few studies have addressed the potential biological activity of 25(OH)2D3. However, it is known that 100 nM 25(OH)2D3 increases calcium transport in the perfused duodenal loop of the chicken to 200% of controls within 20 minutes. The hypothesis of the current study is that 25(OH)2D3 may be a hormonally active metabolite …
Physiological Importance Of 1,25(Oh)2D3 Membrane-Initiated And Nuclear Actions In Chickens As A Function Of Growth, And Maturation In Male And Female Chickens, Birgitta Larsson
Physiological Importance Of 1,25(Oh)2D3 Membrane-Initiated And Nuclear Actions In Chickens As A Function Of Growth, And Maturation In Male And Female Chickens, Birgitta Larsson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is well established that l,25(OH)2D3 is a major regulator of calcium homeostasis. The steroid exerts its effects on its target organs by two mechanisms, a slow mechanism mediated by nuclear vitamin D receptors (nVDR), and a rapid mechanism mediated by the l,25(OH)2D3 membrane-associated rapid response steroid binding protein (l,25D3-MARRS bp). In this dissertation, the physiological relevance of membrane initiated steroid signaling was investigated by studying the correlation of age in male and female chickens with the magnitude of responses to l,25(OH)2D3 in duodena from 7-, 14-, 28-, and …

Values Of Commonly-Used Protein Supplements In Broiler Rations, D F. Hessels
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE performances of broiler flocks in the latter part of 1964 were below standard. Low body weights and a high incidence of gizzard erosion were common on farms.
It was therefore decided to test the biological valuss of the commonly-used protein supplements and also to try to find a correlation between gizzard erosion and any of the protein supplements.
Egg Shell Quality, R J. Bishop
Egg Shell Quality, R J. Bishop
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Recent overseas work and local industry developments indicate that the calcium content of feed for laying hens in Western Australia should be increased to achieve satisfactory egg shell strength.
Age, temperature and breeding are other important influences on egg shell quality.

PELLETS are the most profitable feed for broiler chickens—but when they contain about two-thirds cereal, does it pay a country grower to pay freight on pellets when cereals are plentiful in his district?

Growth Of The Broiler Industry In W.A, D F. Hessels
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE production of poultry meat in W.A. before 1956 was only a side-line for egg producers or small, mixed farmers.
Most of the meat available was made up of culled hens, first cross cockerels and some heavy breed birds.

FIRST THREE-YEAR-AVERAGE REPORT FOR THE WEST AUSTRALIAN RANDOM SAMPLE LAYING TEST COVERING THE 4th, 5th AND 6th TESTS
Despite every effort made to provide all entries in individual tests with a uniform environment it is still possible for a particular entry's performance not to be a true indication of its inherent ability.
Random Sample Test results should therefore be viewed on a long term, annual, consecutive basis. If the yearly results for a given hatchery are grouped together and averaged over a period of several years irregularities in performance due to factors other than genetic worth are minimised and a …

npHE Fifth Random Sample Egg Laying Test differs from the four previous ones in that the names of entrants are published with the results.
This procedure was adopted after a meeting of the Joint Poultry Industry Improvement Committee in April, 1961.
The Committee is a body made up of representatives from all organised sections of the poultry industry and one of its functions is to advise on policy in the random sample test.

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
TO help improve the quality of laying stock for poultry farmers in Western Australia the Poultry Branch of the Department of Agriculture conducts annual random sample egg laying tests.
The tests reveal good and bad points in the laying strains available, and their results are a valuable guide to breeders.
Most of the chickens sold in Western Australia are now bred by hatcherymen who participate in the Random Sample Tests.

AS part of the poultry improvement plan for Western Australia, the Department of Agriculture inaugurated a random sample laying test for commercial grade chickens at the Poultry Research Station, Herdsman Lake, in 1957.
The results of the first test appeared in the May-June, 1959 issue of the Journal of Agriculture and those of the second test in the June, 1960 issue.
