Within the wide distribution of spirlin in Iran, populations of this species inhabit a great variety of habitats, including qanats. We hypothesized that qanats may contribute to habitat-specific variation in the life history of the fish. To test this, a total of 240 specimens of Alburnoides bipunctatus, caught in the qanat of Uzineh (northern Iran) from October 2007 to August 2008, were examined for life history attributes. The population had a 5-year life cycle. A total of 8 specimens of Rana tavasensis Baran & Atatür, 1986 (Tavas frog) were collected in Denizli Province (inner-west Anatolia, or the eastern part of the Aegean region), Turkey, in 2008 and 2009 and were examined for the first time for helminths. All 8 frogs were infected with 1 or more helminths. The helminth fauna of R. tavasensis comprised 3 species: 1 species of Digenea [Haplometra cylindracea (Zeder, 1800) Looss, 1899], 1 species of Nematoda [Cosmocerca ornata (Dujardin, 1845)], and 1 species of Acanthocephala [Acanthocephalus ranae (Schrank, 1788) Lühe, 1911)]. Fifteen Lyciasalamandra atifi and 14 L. fazilae from Antalya Province, Turkey, were examined for helminths. Three species of nematodes, Rhabdias bermani, Aplectana acuminata, and Cosmocerca longicauda, were found in L. atifi and 2 species, Aplectana linstowi and Cosmocerca longicauda, were found in L. fazilae. L. atifi represents a new host record for each of the 3 species of nematodes reported; L. fazilae represents a new host record for each of the 2 species of nematodes reported.

Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are considered serious agricultural pests in Pakistan. Their stomach contents were examined (n = 63) in central Punjab, Pakistan, and it was found that 32 types of food items were consumed. Triticum aestivum, Saccharum officinarum, Zea mays, Oryza sativa, Prosopis juliflora, and earthworms were the main staples. The major components of the diet of wild boar in central Punjab originated from 58% cultivated crops, 30% uncultivated crops, 9% animal matter, and 3% unidentified matter. Three New Species Of Hilara Meigen (Diptera: Empididae) From Turkey, Mustafa Cemal Çi̇ftçi̇, Abdullah Hasbenli̇, Hasan Koç

Three new species from the Marmara region of Turkey are described: Hilara sakaryensis sp. nov. (Hilara abdominalis-group), Hilara truva sp. nov. (Hilara canescens-group), and Hilara balikesirensis sp. nov. (Hilara intermedia-group). Males and females are described and compared with related species, and male genitalia and forelegs are illustrated. The systematic position of the new species within the species groups is discussed, and a key to the Turkish species of Hilara Meigen is given.

The ultrastructural pathological changes in the renal haemopoietic tissue of Channa punctatus (Bloch) experimentally infected with 2 species of aeromonads, Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas salmonicida, were reported. Adult C. punctatus specimens were injected intramuscularly, once at a time, with a chosen sublethal dose (2 × 10^9 cfu mL^-^1) of aeromonads at 5 µL g^-^1 body weight of fish and were exposed to 72 h of duration. Various vertebrate-type steroid and gonadotropin hormones have been identified in invertebrates, including insects; however, studies in this area are not sufficient to presume a generalized role for these hormones. We identified testosterone, progesterone, and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in the whole-body homogenates of Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and its parasitoid Pimpla turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Testosterone concentration significantly decreased from early instars to last instars and pupal stages of G. mellonella; however, no significant difference was observed in progesterone levels at different stages. Nest characteristics of the Eurasian coot (Fulica atra) and the effect of vegetation and water depth on nest size were investigated. The study was conducted in 2008 on Poyrazlar Lake (Sakarya) in northwest Turkey. Depth and distance from the edge has no effect on internal nest diameter; however, nest height and external diameter are correlated with water depth.

On The Occurrence Of Ascorhynchus Castelli (Dohrn, 1881) (Arthropoda: Pycnogonida) In The Aegean Sea, Cengi̇z Koçak

Sampling studies in the Turkish Aegean Sea revealed the occurrence of a sea spider species, Ascorhynchus castelli (Dohrn, 1881). The presence of this species is reported for the first time from the Aegean Sea and the second time from the eastern Mediterranean Sea. This record further extends the known distribution of the species from the Turkish Mediterranean Sea to the Aegean Sea in the eastern Mediterranean. This is also the first record of the species from shallow waters in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (10 m).

Suctobelbid mite fauna of the Shendabad region (East Azerbaijan Province) was studied in 2008 to determine the species found in soil samples. There were 4 species identified that are new records for the mite fauna of Iran: Suctobelbella (Flagrosuctobelba) elegantula (Hammer), Suctobelbella (Flagrosuctobelba) nana Shtanchaeva and Subias, Suctobelbella (Suctobelbella) acutidens (Forsslund), and Suctobelba trigona (Michael). One species, Suctobelba aliena Moritz, is new to Asia. An identification key is given for the species.

In December 2008, near Flaming Gorge Reservoir in northeastern Utah, a 2 ½-year-old male Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) was reported in poor body condition with bloody lesions covering the muzzle area. The sheep was euthanized, and samples were submitted to the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Logan, Utah. The gross and microscopic lesions confirmed the diagnosis of contagious ecthyma (CE). This is the first documented report of CE in bighorn sheep from Utah.

Management strategies proposed to mitigate the risk of brucellosis transmission between elk and cattle (e.g., test-and-slaughter of all elk, elimination of feedgrounds, use of contraceptives) could result in a substantial decrease in elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) populations. These strategies could impact hunting and outfitting industries through reduced regional elk populations. Loss of hunters, particularly nonresidents, could result in economic losses for the state and hinder elk management. European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are a known risk factor for the occurrence of microorganisms that are pathogenic to cattle and humans in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Starling use of CAFOs is known to vary in response to weather; starling control operations on CAFOs often are timed to coincide with favorable environmental conditions to maximize take. Avian influenza virus (AIV) is influenced by site fidelity and movements of bird hosts. We examined the movement ecology of American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) as potential hosts for West Nile virus (WNV) and greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons frontalis) as potential hosts for AIVs. Research was based on radio-telemetry studies conducted in the Central Valley of California, USA. Elk (Cervus elaphus) and bison (Bison bison) of the Greater Yellowstone area are the last known reservoir of bovine brucellosis (Brucella abortus) in the United States. Domestic cattle occasionally contract the disease while grazing in areas where infected wild ungulates have aborted their fetuses or have given birth. Cases of brucellosis in cattle trigger costly quarantine, testing, and culling procedures. Government agencies and stakeholders, therefore, allocate valuable resources to prevent wildlife-to-cattle transmission. Ongoing occurrence of elevated levels of lead in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) following the ban on lead shot for waterfowl hunting led us to hypothesize that spent lead from ammunition, which is present in field residues of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), represented a source of lead exposure in eagles. We conducted a case-control study using data from 1,277 bald eagles admitted for rehabilitation from January 1996 through December 2009. We modified and evaluated capture nets fired from the Coda Netlauncher® as a tool for capturing various avian species. We modified the netlauncher by using customized nets to maximize the area of the capture zone. We captured 137 birds, comprising 12 species, in 23 attempts between July 2008 and October 2009 using this method. Capture success rates varied from 25 to 69% were comparable to success rates reported for other capture methods for these species. Measuring photosynthesis or primary productivity in biofloc technology production systems is challenging because the biofloc must be maintained in suspension constantly. Photosynthesis can be measured in external incubators designed to keep the biofloc suspended in the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) bottle, but primary productivity must be measured in the biofloc technology production system culture unit. Therefore, a submersible device is required to keep the biofloc suspended in the BOD bottle. This report details a submersible, air-powered magnetic stirrer that we designed, fabricated from off-the-shelf materials, and tested in biofloc technology production system tanks.

The Chinese mystery snail (Bellamya chinensis) is an aquatic invasive species in North America. Little is known regarding this species’ impacts on freshwater ecosystems. It is believed that population densities can be high, yet no population estimates have been reported. We utilized a mark-recapture approach to generate a population estimate for Chinese mystery snail in Wild Plum Lake, a 6.47-ha reservoir in southeast Nebraska. We calculated, using bias-adjusted Lincoln-Petersen estimation, that there were approximately 664 adult snails within a 127 m2 transect (5.2 snails/m2). Why certain species of fish become invasive is poorly understood and a key obstacle to restoring many of the world’s ecosystems. In this study we tested whether variation in biotic resistance exerted by native predators might explain the reproductive success of the common carp, a large and fecund invasive species that typically spawns in outlying and unstable shallow habitat. An initial three-year study of the relative abundance of youngof- year (YOY) carp in interconnected lakes in the Upper Mississippi River Basin discovered that YOY carp are only found in shallow waters that experience winter hypoxia (winterkill) and have low densities …

Using real-time PCR, we tested 15 wolf (Canis lupus) feces from the Superior National Forest (SNF), Minnesota, USA, and 191 from Yellowstone National Park (YNP), USA, collected during summer and 13 during winter for canine parvovirus (CPV)-2 DNA. We also tested 20 dog feces for CPV-2 DNA. The PCR assay was 100%sensitive and specific with a minimum detection threshold of 104 50% tissue culture infective dose. Virus was detected in two winter specimens but none of the summer specimens. We suggest applying the technique more broadly especially with winter feces.

Little is known about the physiology or biochemistry of hypoxia (reduced levels of oxygen) tolerance during development in vertebrate embryos. In most species, relatively brief bouts of severe hypoxia are lethal or teratogenic. An exception to such hypoxia intolerance is the annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus, in which populations persist in hypoxic environments. This species inhabits seasonal ponds in Venezuela, surviving through the dry season in the form of diapausing embryos. Embedded in the pond sediment, embryos of A. limnaeus are routinely exposed to hypoxia and anoxia (lack of oxygen) as part of their normal development. Here, we exposed embryos to …

An increased understanding of species-specific behavioral needs has lead zoos to focus on providing more naturalistic and stimulating environments. Scientific assessments of how changes in habitat affect animal behavior are necessary in improving overall animal welfare. This study examined the move of three orangutans housed at the Oregon Zoo into a new and innovative exhibit. Post-occupancy evaluation (POE), which offers systematic information regarding the success or failure of the built environment (Maple & Finlay, 1987), was utilized to effectively evaluate the results of the move. This study used an in situ heart preparation to analyze the power and work of spontaneously beating hearts of four anurans (R. marina, L. catesbeianus, X. laevis, P. edulis) and three urodeles (N. maculosus, A. tigrinum, A. tridactylum) in order to elucidate the meaning of relative ventricle mass (RVM) in terms of specific cardiac performance variables. This study also tests two hypotheses: 1) the ventricles of terrestrial species (R. marina, P. edulis, A. tigrinum) of amphibians are capable of greater maximum power outputs (Pmax) compared to aquatic species (X. laevis, A. tridactylum, N. maculosus, L. catesbeianus) and, 2) …

Dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is known to be effective in avoiding many obesity related diseases. Conjugated linoleic acid is a product of ruminant fermentation and 3.4 g/day are needed to obtain the clinical benefits. However, it is difficult to obtain sufficient CLA to realize these benefits from a healthy diet containing dairy and beef products, without increasing levels of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat. A 20% CLA soy oil with low saturated fat and no cholesterol has been produced by photoisomerization of linoleic acid in the triacylglyceride oil.
