Characterizing the contributions of the seed bank and vegetative propagules will enhance our understanding of community resiliency associated with prairie dog disturbances. Our objective was to determine the effects of ecological condition (EC) and distance from burrows on the soil seed bank and vegetative propagules. Based on species composition of the extant vegetation, two prairie dog colonies were selected on the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands in western South Dakota. Bovine respiratory coronavirus (BRCoV) is a group 2a coronavirus expressing both hemagglutinin-esterase and spike (S) envelope glycoproteins. The S glycoprotein is a primary coronavirus virulence factor responsible for both receptor specificity and membrane fusion-mediated entry into host cells. In addition, the S glycoprotein serves as a major antigen targeted by both the cellular and humoral immune responses and, as such, is an important target for antibody-facilitated virus neutralization. Five experiments were conducted to assess potential improvements in a protocol for inducing ovulation in seasonally anovulatory mares based upon estradiol pretreatment followed by dopamine antagonist injection. The first experiment compared various doses of estradiol cypionate (ECP) and domperidone (in biodegradable microparticles), as well as additions and deletions to the protocol. It was concluded that as little as 75 mg ECP and as little as 1.5 g of domperidone could be used with success, but that both components were required. In the second experiment, timing of the injection (1, 6, or 11 days apart) and ECP dose were assessed. It …

We describe a model designed to simulate the shell carbonate budget of an oyster reef.We identify five parameters descriptive of basic characteristics of the shell carbonate budget of a reef that limit simulation accuracy. Two describe the TAZ (taphonomically-active zone) and the distribution of shell carbonate within it. One is the taphonomic rate in the TAZ. Two determine the volume contribution of shell carbonate and the taphonomic loss rate within the reef framework. For Mid-Atlantic estuaries, model simulations suggest that reef accretion only occurs if oyster abundance is near carrying capacity. A multidisciplinary approach incorporating otolith chemistry, age data, and numerical Lagrangian particle simulations indicated a single, self-recruiting population of Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) in the Southeast Pacific Basin (SPB) and Ross Sea, with a life history structured by the large-scale circulation. Chemistry deposited prior to capture along otolith edges demonstrated strong environmental heterogeneity, yet the chemistry in otolith nuclei, deposited during early life, showed no differences. Age data showed only adult fish in catches on the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge in the SPB and structuring of life stages consistent with transport pathways from the northern Ross Sea. Over the past several years, the authors of this work have investigated external structures of microdrile oligochaetes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both published and still-unpublished data have revealed new structures of interest, especially those associated with mating, ciliate sense receptors, chaetae, and dorsal pores. Mating systems can be classified in 3 categories: grasping, coupling, and embracing. Ciliate sense receptors can be classified as poorly defined (unelevated), sensory buds, or papillae, and are provided with blunt cilia and/or sharp cilia. The purpose of this study was to record the oligochaete fauna in Lake Kawaguchi and clarify their horizontal distribution. In addition, annual changes in the lake were recorded. Samples were collected between 5 March 1993 and 7 March 2006 by using a standard Ekman-Birge sampler at 22 stations, and multipoint sampling surveys were carried out. As a result of the study, a total of 8 species belonging to 6 genera and 3 subfamilies were identified. The profundal oligochaete fauna is mostly formed of species present also in shallower waters. Endemic taxa have developed only in ancient rift lakes like Lake Baikal. "Common" lakes, mostly of glacial or volcanic origin, are too ephemeral for speciation. In the profundal of larger European oligotrophic lakes, there can occur about 10 tubificid and lumbriculid species. This study deals with the structure of echinoderm assemblages and their relationships with the biotic and abiotic conditions in the Çanakkale Strait in 2006 and 2007. The species composition and distribution of large intestinal ciliates was investigated in feces from 5 Cypriot domestic horses living in Northern Cyprus. We identified 9 ciliate genera and 11 species. This is the first report on intestinal ciliates in Cypriot domestic horses, and no endemic species were observed. The genera Cycloposthium, Spirodinium, and Paraisotricha occurred in all animals. The mean number of ciliates was (5.5 ± 4.4) × 10^4 cells mL^-^1 of feces and the mean number of ciliate species per host was 7.2 ± 1.5. Two different myxosporean fish parasites (Myxobolus episquamalis Egusa, Maeno & Sorimachi, 1990 and Myxobolus ichkeulensis Bahri & Marques, 1996) are reported based on samples found on the scales and gill arches of flathead mullet (Mugil cephalus) captured from Çamlık Lagoon, located on the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Both parasites were found for the first time on flathead mullet from the Turkish coasts. In addition to the data concerning spore morphology and the dimensions of both species, new additional taxonomic observations are presented. Furthermore, asynchronous polar capsule maturation was observed in transmission electron microscope images of both species.

Some parasitic hymenopterans were reared from their host insects found on the stems and branches of Heracleum platytaenium Boiss., which contains furanocoumarins that are insect repellents and suppress growth in some species. Plant materials with insects were collected from the vicinity of Kızılcahamam in Ankara Province in July-September 2008. Some aspects concerning the reproduction, growth, and population dynamics of Plesionika martia were studied. Individuals were collected monthly between May 2008 and April 2009 during surveys conducted using a commercial trawl vessel. Samples were collected from Sığacık Bay (Aegean Sea, eastern Mediterranean) at depths ranging from 494 to 550 m. A total of 2110 individuals (766 males and 1344 females) were caught during these monthly surveys. The seasonality of group size and composition in sand partridges was studied at the Ibex Reserve in central Saudi Arabia. Mean group size and flock encounter rate were significantly related to rainfall and temperature. During winter and the breeding season (March to April), the encounter rate on the valley floors was distinctly lower than that observed during summer. Although encounter rates did not differ significantly between valleys, sand partridges were more likely to be encountered in narrow, stony valleys. Declines in populations of amphibians have been occurring more dramatically over the past 25 years. The declines have various causes. One of the possible causes of amphibian declines is pesticides. Copper sulfate is commonly used as a fungicide in vineyards and gardens in Turkey. In this study, our purpose was to explain the morphologically and histologically acute toxic effects of copper sulfate on Bufo viridis tadpoles. B. viridis tadpoles at Gosner stage 21 were exposed to different concentrations (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 mg/L) of copper sulfate for 120 h. The Combined Effects Of Salinity And Temperature On The Egg Hatching Rate, Incubation Time, And Survival Until Protozoal Stages Of Metapenaeus Monoceros (Fabricius) (Decapoda: Penaeidae), Mevlüt Aktaş, Nuran Çavdar

The combined effects of 3 different temperatures (24, 28, and 32 °C) and salinity levels (35, 40, and 45 g L^{-1}) on the egg hatching rate, incubation time, larval activity, and survival rate until protozoal (PZ1) stage of Metapenaeus monoceros (Fabricius) were investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. The average fertilization rate was 97.25% following spawning. The eggs were stocked in 2-L glass larval culture flasks and received 1 of 9 salinity and temperature combinations in 3 replicates. The eggs hatched in all treatments. Temperature, salinity, and their interaction had significant influences on the hatching rate of the eggs (P < 0.05). The hatching rate decreased as salinity increased and was lowest in all temperature levels at a salinity of 45 g L^{-1}. With regard to the hatching rate, the best combinations were obtained at 35 g L^{-1} and 32 °C (91.67%) and at 35 g L^{-1} and 28 °C (89.17%). The incubation time was shorter at 32 °C (11.2 h) than at 28 °C (14 h) or 24 °C (17.2 h). The development rate from the naupliar stage to the protozoal stage was best at a salinity level of 35 g L^{-1} combined with temperatures of 28 °C and 32 °C. Larval activity was also found to be best at 28 °C and 32 °C at 35 g L^{-1} and 40 g L^{-1}, as compared to that at 24 °C in all salinity levels.

Nucleolar Organizer Regions In Mesocricetus Brandti (Nehring, 1898) (Mammalia: Rodentia) From The Yozgat And Tokat Provinces Of Turkey, Nursel Baydemi̇r

Mesocricetus brandti possesses a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 42, a fundamental number of NF = 82, and a fundamental number of autosomal arms of NFa = 78. The chromosome set consists of 17 meta-submetacentric pairs, 2 subtelocentric pairs, and 1 acrocentric pair. The X chromosome is large and metacentric while the Y is medium-sized and metacentric. The nucleolar organizer regions were located at the telomeric region of 7 biarmed autosomes and at the centromeric region of 1 acrocentric autosome.

In this study, Zeiraphera isertana (Fabricius, 1794) is newly recorded among Turkish Tortricidae fauna. This is the first record of the genus Zeiraphera Treirschke, 1829 from Turkey. The specimens were collected from cherry trees in Afyonkarahisar Province during 2008. Collection was done via bait traps used for the control of Tortricidae pest moths. Both male genitalia and imago were depicted.

The present study was conducted to identify the parasitic infection of the nemacheilid loach, Turcinoemacheilus kosswigi, in 5 rivers of the Tigris basin in Iran, from July 2007 to August 2008. Extracted from 43 fish specimens were 3 parasitic species: metacercaria of Posthodiplostomum cuticola (Digenea: Diplostomatidae) in the skin, fins, gills, and muscles; Allocreadium sp. (Digenea: Allocreadidae) and Procamallanus sp. (Nematoda: Camallanidae) in the intestine. The Thysanoptera fauna of the Lakes Region of Turkey was studied in 1990-1992. A total of 3173 specimens from 397 samples were examined. The study revealed 74 Thysanoptera species and 45 of them are new records for the region. Three genera, namely Bregmatothrips Hood, Eremiothrips Priesner, and Iridothrips Priesner; and 5 species, namely Bregmatothrips dimorphus (Priesner), Eremiothrips dubius (Priesner), Eremiothrips taghizadehi (zur Strassen), Iridothrips iridis (Watson), and Mycterothrips annulicornis (Uzel) are new records for the Turkish fauna. A total of 44 molluscan species belonging to 5 classes were identified in 3 transects (including depths of 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 200 m) located in Kumkuyu, Limonlu, and Erdemli. Overall, no significant difference in community parameters such as diversity index, evenness index, and species richness was found among transects. The species abundance showed seasonal and depth-wise variations. The highest species richness (6-16 species) was encountered between depths of 10 and 100 m in winter and spring, whereas the molluscan population increased in warm seasons due to the high abundance of Corbula gibba and Nucula nitidosa. A New Species Of Tephritis Latreille (Diptera: Tephritidae) From Turkey, Murat Kütük, Nesli̇han Bayrak, Rüstem Hayat

Tephritis ozaslani sp. nov. is described from Artvin Province of Turkey and placed in the T. pulchra species group. The key to the T. pulchra group is provided, which includes 9 species. The main characters that distinguish the new species from the closely resembling Palaearctic species, T. cometa israilis Freidberg, T. acanthiophilopsis Hering, T. erdemlii Kütük, T. divisa Rondani, T. recurrens Loew, T. merzi Freidberg & Kütük, and T. hurvitzi Freidberg, are discussed. In addition, Inula oculus christi L. (Asteraceae) is determined as a host plant of the new species.
