Settlement And Growth Of Quagga Mussels (Dreissenia Rostriformis Bugensis Andrusov, 1897) In Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, Usa, Wai Hing Wong, Shawn Gerstenberger, Wen Baldwin, Bryan Moore
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
Settlement and growth of quagga mussels Dreissena rostriformis bugensis were monitored in Lake Mead, NV, USA, where the first dreissenid occurrence was confirmed in the western United States. To measure the settlement rate of these invasive mussels, seven acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) pipes were attached to a line in shallow water (7.7 m below the surface) since November 23, 2007; eight ABS pipes were placed on another line in deep water (13.4 m below the surface) since January 3, 2008. Quagga mussels were sampled from these pipes on March 19, May 21, July 9, October 20, and December 19, 2008. …
The Equitarian Initiative: International Humanitarian Aid Using Horses, Angela Gebhart
The Equitarian Initiative: International Humanitarian Aid Using Horses, Angela Gebhart
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
This harrowing comment from a Mexican laborer echoes the worldwide importance of working horses, mules, and donkeys. For many in the United States, a horse is a source of recreation, a sport vehicle of sorts, a decoration, or a pet. For most other parts of the world, a working equid (horse, donkey, or mule) is a family’s sole vehicle, a day laborer, and the only constant source of income available. Many of these communities lack a steady food source for the animals, much less a competent veterinarian; thus, the world’s veterinarians treat only about 10% of the world’s total equid …

High Resolution Hybrid Mass Spectrometry For The Determination Of Marine Biotoxins, Azaspiracids, And Their Biotransformation Products., Zuzana Skrabakova
Theses
Azaspiracids (AZAs), polyether marine toxins, are produced by marine microalgae and accumulate in filter-feeding bivalve molluscs, such as mussels, clams, oysters and scallops, while grazing on phytoplankton, from which they derive nutrition. Although being discovered quite recently, AZAs have caused several human intoxication events and thus became a problem for health authorities and shellfish industries. The rapid development of highly sensitive liquid chromatography multiple tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS, LC-MS") methods enabled the identification of numerous AZA analogues and added to the control of shellfish contamination. Tandem mass spectrometry techniques, while being highly selective and sensitive for determination of AZAs in …

The Effects Of Nutritionally‐Modulated Prepartum Bcs On Pre‐ And Postpartum Metabolic Responses, In Vitro Lipid Metabolism And Performance Of Multiparous Beef Cows, Melissa Dale Hudson
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Increased BCS at calving due to nutritional manipulation during the prepartum period resulted in greater mobilization of body fat after calving, regardless of plane of nutrition during the last 60 d of gestation. Although fatter cows were shown to have greater mobilization of reserves during the postpartum period, they maintained greater BCS at all points from calving to weaning compared to cows calving with fewer reserves at calving. A unique finding of this experiment was that the variation in BCS at calving was positively associated with BCS loss for cows fed to accrete BC during the prepartum period but was …

Review: Lipid Addition To Corn Finishing Diets, Virgil R. Bremer, Galen Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein Klopfenstein
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The fat content of distillers grains with solubles (DGS) partially accounts for DGS feeding value being greater than corn. Finishing diets containing DGS to supply up to 8% of diet DM as fat may be fed without depressing cattle performance. However, feeding diets containing 8% diet fat with corn oil depresses cattle performance. The difference in rumen metabolism of these two fats is due to physical protection of DGS fat from interaction with rumen microbes. Due to an unknown mechanism, condensed corn distillers solubles, a liquid fat source, does not limit ruminal metabolism like corn oil. Optimum dietary fat level …

Meta-Analysis Of Feeding Calf-Feds Or Yearlings Wet Distillers Grains With Different Corn Processing Types, Virgil R. Bremer, Kathryn J. Hanford, Galen Erickson Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Meta-analyses of University of Nebraska–Lincoln feedlot research feeding wet corn distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) with dry-rolled corn (DRC) and high moisture corn (HMC) to either calf-feds or yearlings was conducted to calculate the feeding values of WDGS relative to corn. The feeding valueof wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) was superior to dry-rolled corn (DRC) and high moisture corn (HMC). The feeding value of WDGS was greater for yearlings than for calf-feds. The combination of WDGS and HMC provided cattle performance superior to DRC with or without WDGS.

Five datasets from Canada, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Nebraska were used to determine the impact of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) on performance, with emphasis on dry matter intake (DMI) and feed to gain ratio (F:G). Data included pens and individually fed cattle. In general, cattle treated for BRD had lower DMI and average daily gain (ADG) with little to no effect on F:G. When BRD occured early in the feeding period (days), little change in performance was observed.

Glycerin was fed at 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9% (DM basis) in a steam-flaked, corn-based (SFC) diet to determine the effects on performance and carcass characteristics. Glycerin linearly increased (P = 0.02) final BW, ADG linearly increased (P = 0.02), and F:G linearly decreased (P < 0.01) by 7.1%. The data suggests glycerin can be added up to 9% inclusion to improve performance.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
An economic evaluation of a growth performance study (2011 Nebraska Beef Cattle Report, pp. 62-64) comparing wet or dry distillers grains with solubles (DGS) containing varying levels of sulfur was conducted. Diets containing DGS were more profitable than the control diets containing no co-product (Control). Wet DGS showed greater profitability than Control and dry DGS diets. Sulfur content in dry DGS did not affect profitability. Profits were lowest for Control and greatest for wet DGS (0.82% S) at 30% inclusion. Low sulfur concentration in wet DGS allows shipment to feedlots further away.
