Growth, The Length-Weight Relationship, And Reproduction In Vimba (Vimba Vimba L. 1758) Sampled From An Oligo-Mesotrophic Lake In Northwest Anatolia (Turkey), Hacer Okgerman, Mahmut Elp, Cumhur H. Yardimci

The growth parameters and reproduction period in vimba (Vimba vimba L. 1758) sampled from Sapanca Lake were determined monthly between September 2003 and July 2004. The 335 vimba specimens caught ranged in age from 2^+ to 6^+ years, and the majority of the samples consisted of individuals of the 4^{+}-year-old age group. The length-weight relationship was estimated to be W = 0.0084 FL^{3.1797±0.0035} for males (r^2 = 0.94, P < 0.05) and W = 0.0089 FL^{3.1572±0.0033} for females (r^2 = 0.93, P < 0.05). Regression coefficients for sex were significant (t-test, P < 0.05). The slope (b) significantly differed (ANCOVA, P < 0.05) between months. The fact that the b values for male and female vimba specimens differed from 3.0 indicates that there was positive allometric growth. The von Bertalanffy equation was determined using Lt = 28.940 (1-exp {-0.123[t+2.193]}), \phi': 2.030, (r = 0.999) for males and Lt = 24.708 [1-exp {-0.205[t+1.464]}), \phi': 2.097, (r = 0.999) for females. The sex ratio was 1:1.86 (\chi^2; P < 0.05). The spawning period of vimba began at the end of April and continued until the beginning of July; the water temperature during this period was between 14.8 and 25.9 °C.

Distribution And Allometry Of The Knobby Swimcrab,Macropipus Tuberculatus (Roux, 1830) (Brachyura, Portunidae) In The Strait Of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea), Giandomenico Nardone, Sergio Ragonese
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Distribution and biometric information for Macropipus tuberculatus of the Strait of Sicily were obtained via an experimental bottom trawl survey carried out in 2000. The species occurred with low frequency (20%) and abundance (365 specimens), showing a scattered spatial distribution, split in 2 preferential depth levels (90-160 m and 230-460 m). Males were larger and more abundant than females. The carapace length width relationship was allometric positive (b > 1), and the carapace length weight relationship was isometric (b = 3).

The red-wing tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens) is economically important as food. The current study investigated the limb and trunk characteristics in age-matched [year-of-hatch (yoh) 2004 and 2005], gender segregated birds, and determined differences in stride between cocks and hens. The locomotion trial was completed in a corridor of 0.6 × 2.36 m dimension. The girth was significantly higher in cocks than in hens, while body weight was slightly higher in hens. Cocks had a greater height than hens. The time to walk 2.36 m was longer for cocks than for hens. This was related to an attenuated speed and stride length …

Balocha hainana, a new idiocerine leafhopper species of the genus Balocha Distant from southern China (Hainan province), is described and illustrated. A key to the 3 Chinese genera of the tribe Megipocerini is provided. An image of the male adult and illustrations of the male genitalia are also given.

Fenoxycarb 0-ethyl N-(2-(4-pheoxyphenoxy)-ethyl) carbamate is the most potent juvenile hormone analogue (JHA) against a variety of insect species including the silkworm Bombyx mori. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the effects of this juvenile hormone on major hemolymph proteins of Bombyx mori during the fifth larval instar, by using fenoxycarb and clarifying the interactions between these proteins and the juvenile hormone. Topical applications of fenoxycarb to the fifth instar larvae of Bombyx mori were performed immediately after the fourth ecdysis (on day 0) and at the beginning of the prepupal period (on day 6). The relationships among 15 morphometric measurements in 219 aliquots of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were examined with respect to sexual dimorphism. The ratio of females to males was determined as 1:5.1 and gonadosomatic indices (%) were found for males (2.13 ± 0.86) and females (3.63 ± 1.18). There were 4 morphometric characteristics that differed between genders: ventral margin of cleithrum (VMC), postanal fin length (post-AFL), postdorsal fin length (post-DFL), and preanal fin length (pre-AFL). Although there were significant differences between morphometric characteristics (post-AFL, post-DFL, pre-AFL) and total length, no significant differences were found in the VMC. Our multidisciplinary group at the University of Arkansas has been investigating the suitability of the chicken as a medical model for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in humans. There are several forms of PAH in humans arising from elevated pulmonary arterial pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance. Spontaneous cases of PAH are known as idiopathic PAH (IPAH), where the exact physiological causes are not known. IPAH patients that do not respond to standard treatments have a prognosis of only a few years. Currently, there is no acceptable animal model for IPAH. Wolves (Canis lupus) in northeastern Minnesota cached six radio-collars (four in winter, two in spring-summer) of 202 radio-collared White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) they killed or consumed from 1975 to 2010. A Wolf bedded on top of one collar cached in snow. We found one collar each at a Wolf den and Wolf rendezvous site, 2.5 km and 0.5 km respectively, from each deer’s previous locations.

Yellowthroat Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is managed as part of the National Wildlife Refuge System by the Fort Niobrara / Valentine National Wildlife Refuges complex staff. Yellowthroat WMA is a 480-acre area managed for migratory birds. Our goal is to restore this former cropland to native prairie by using management techniques such as prescribed burning, grazing, weed control, water level manipulations, and planting native grasses. A variety of wildlife can be seen in the wetlands and grasslands, including the yellow-throated warbler for which the place is named.

The Niobrara River has a natural hydrograph and temperature regime with the lower 32 km protected under the National Wild and Scenic River system managed by the National Park Service. The largest threat to this river is decreased instream flows due to water withdrawals for agriculture. A total of 36 individually penned barrows (initial weight = 176 lb) were used in an experiment conducted to determine the lysine requirement for barrows fed ractopamine during the last 85 lb of the fi nishing phase. There were six dietary treatments that were corn-soybean meal-based with additional crystalline amino acid supplementation. Pigs were assigned to one of six dietary treatments for the duration of the experiment. Treatments included lysine concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 1.3% total lysine. Dietary treatment significantly affected average daily gain and feed efficiency. The total lysine requirement was estimated to be 0.76%. These results indicate …

This report evaluates the economic costs of production and profits for energy-restricted and conventional gilt development programs. Production and performance data and input and output prices were used to construct enterprise budgets for both groups. Results indicate that restricting feed intake during gilt development lowered breakeven selling prices for market pigs by an average of $0.17/cwt for two prolific maternal lines through their first four parities.

Litter performance, progeny growth performance, and progeny health status may be affected by dam parity. The objective of the current experiment was to evaluate gastrointestinal microflora, as a measure of gut health, in progeny derived from first parity (P1) compared to fourth parity (P4) dams. Fecal samples were collected from the progeny (n = 6 pigs/litter) of P1 and P4 dams (n = 4 from each parity, P1 and P4) on days 1, 7, and 14 following parturition. DNA from 57 generation-28 boars that had sired progeny in the NE selection and control lines was submitted to GeneSeek Inc., where genotypes for eight Single Nucleotide Polymorphic Markers (SNPs) affecting economic traits in pigs were determined. This experiment evaluated the effects of developing gilts with ad libitum access to feed to breeding age (226 days) or feed intake restriction from 123 to 226 days of age. Gilts were managed in groups of 10 per pen. Those in the restricted group were fed two meals per day so that energy intake was 75% of that of the ad libitum group. A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding 0, 5, 10, or 15% distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) on carcass quality, color stability, and sensory characteristics of the longissimus muscle (LM) of finishing pigs. Two hundred forty pigs (61.7 lb) were assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments with varying concentrations of DDGS (0, 5, 10, and 15%). Live weight, hot carcass weight, and dressing percentage did not change in response to increased dietary DDGS (P = 0.491, 0.807, 0.316, respectively). Forty pigs (66.6 lb) were used in a 14-week 4-phase regime study conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding varying concentrations of DDGS to growing-finishing pigs formulated on a standardized ileal digestibility (SID) lysine (lys) basis, DDGS withdrawal at the last feeding phase, and ractopamine (RAC) supplementation 4 weeks prior to harvesting on carcass quality, and color stability and sensory characteristics of longissimus muscle (LM) of finishing pigs. Pigs treated alike vary in performance due to their different genetic makeup and to environmental effects we cannot completely control. When a group of pigs is randomly allotted to treatments it is nearly impossible to get an "equal" group of pigs on each treatment. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary lactose alone or in combination with dried milk-yeast product on growth performance, gastrointestinal microbiota, and immune parameters in weanling pigs. Pigs fed lactose and lactose with milk-yeast tended (P = 0.07) to have greater BW compared to control pigs (19.56 and 19.60 vs. 18.55 lb) at the end of phase 1 (week 1 to 2); however, no differences in BW were observed during phase 2 (week 3 to 4), phase 3 (week 5), or overall (week 1 to 5). A preliminary experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of crystalline lactose on the relative abundance of sodium-dependent glucose transporter (SGLT)-1 mRNA in vitro in model porcine jejunal epithelial cells (IPEC-J2). Cells were treated with low (28 mM) or high (56 mM) concentrations of lactose alone or in combination with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 10 ng/mL). Total RNA and culture media samples from both apical and basolateral compartments were harvested at 3, 6, 12, and 24 hours following the addition of respective treatments. Abstract
Background
Representatives of Cetacea have the greatest absolute brain size among animals, and the largest relative brain size aside from humans. Despite this, genes implicated in the evolution of large brain size in primates have yet to be surveyed in cetaceans.
Results
We sequenced ~1240 basepairs of the brain development gene microcephalin (MCPH1) in 38 cetacean species. Alignments of these data and a published complete sequence from Tursiops truncatus with primate MCPH1 were utilized in phylogenetic analyses and to estimate ω (rate of nonsynonymous substitution/rate of synonymous substitution) using site and branch models of molecular evolution. Abstract
Background
Cetacea (dolphins, porpoises, and whales) is a clade of aquatic species that includes the most massive, deepest diving, and largest brained mammals. Understanding the temporal pattern of diversification in the group as well as the evolution of cetacean anatomy and behavior requires a robust and well-resolved phylogenetic hypothesis. Although a large body of molecular data has accumulated over the past 20 years, DNA sequences of cetaceans have not been directly integrated with the rich, cetacean fossil record to reconcile discrepancies among molecular and morphological characters.

Double-Layer Mesh Hernioplasty For Repairing Umbilical Hernias In 10 Goats*, Jose M. Vilar, Juan A. Corbera, Giuseppe Spinella

Umbilical hernias in goats are uncommon and can vary in their etiology and management. Hernioplasty can be done by closing the abdominal wall with a horizontal mattress pattern using absorbable sutures. However, larger defects (hernial ring size >3 cm) generally require the use of prosthetic materials that allow for a tension-free repair. In this study, 10 young female goats with umbilical hernias and hernial ring sizes ranging from 7-10 cm in width were treated using a double-layer polypropylene mesh. An ultrasonographic examination was performed to assess healing and connective tissue production.

Question: Are there territory sizes, shapes, and movement rules that animals can use to maximize their presence for territorial and reproductive purposes? Features of the model: Individual-oriented simulation model of a focal male, a female (his mate), and six other males in adjacent territories. Simulation variables were territory size and aspect (length-to-width ratio), velocity, step size, and potential movement angle. Each simulation represented 10,000 s of real time, and simulations were repeated until convergence on maximum mean encounter rates (MER) of a focal male with the female and other males was reached.
