Increased BCS at calving due to nutritional manipulation during the prepartum period resulted in greater mobilization of body fat after calving, regardless of plane of nutrition during the last 60 d of gestation. Although fatter cows were shown to have greater mobilization of reserves during the postpartum period, they maintained greater BCS at all points from calving to weaning compared to cows calving with fewer reserves at calving. The fat content of distillers grains with solubles (DGS) partially accounts for DGS feeding value being greater than corn. Finishing diets containing DGS to supply up to 8% of diet DM as fat may be fed without depressing cattle performance. However, feeding diets containing 8% diet fat with corn oil depresses cattle performance. The difference in rumen metabolism of these two fats is due to physical protection of DGS fat from interaction with rumen microbes. Meta-analyses of University of Nebraska–Lincoln feedlot research feeding wet corn distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) with dry-rolled corn (DRC) and high moisture corn (HMC) to either calf-feds or yearlings was conducted to calculate the feeding values of WDGS relative to corn. The feeding valueof wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) was superior to dry-rolled corn (DRC) and high moisture corn (HMC). The feeding value of WDGS was greater for yearlings than for calf-feds. The combination of WDGS and HMC provided cattle performance superior to DRC with or without WDGS.

Five datasets from Canada, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Nebraska were used to determine the impact of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) on performance, with emphasis on dry matter intake (DMI) and feed to gain ratio (F:G). Data included pens and individually fed cattle. In general, cattle treated for BRD had lower DMI and average daily gain (ADG) with little to no effect on F:G. When BRD occured early in the feeding period (days), little change in performance was observed.

Glycerin was fed at 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9% (DM basis) in a steam-flaked, corn-based (SFC) diet to determine the effects on performance and carcass characteristics. Glycerin linearly increased (P = 0.02) final BW, ADG linearly increased (P = 0.02), and F:G linearly decreased (P < 0.01) by 7.1%. The data  suggests glycerin can be added up to 9% inclusion to improve performance.

An economic evaluation of a growth performance study (2011 Nebraska Beef Cattle Report, pp. 62-64) comparing wet or dry distillers grains with solubles (DGS) containing varying levels of sulfur was conducted. Diets containing DGS were more profitable than the control diets containing no co-product (Control). Wet DGS showed greater profitability than Control and dry DGS diets. Sulfur content in dry DGS did not affect profitability. Profits were lowest for Control and greatest for wet DGS (0.82% S) at 30% inclusion. Low sulfur concentration in wet DGS allows shipment to feedlots further away.

Effect of dietary sulfur on beef cattle fed diets containing wet or dry distillers grains with solubles (DGS) was evaluated. Sulfur concentration in DGS was either 0.82 or 1.16%. Steers (n = 120; IBW = 761 ± 75 lb) were individually fed ad libitum. Intake decreased when wet and dry 1.16% S DGS were fed. Gain decreased as wet DGS that was 1.16% S increased in the diet to 40%. Feedlot finishing steers (n = 483) were randomly allotted to four dry-rolled corn based diets containing 0 or 30% wet distillers grains with or without the synthetic antioxidants supplementation (ethoxyquin and tertiary butyl hydroquinone in AGRADO®PLUS). This study intended to minimize detrimental effects of feeding wet distillers grains on color and lipidoxidation of beef tenderloin and clod heart muscles during retail display by feeding a synthetic antioxidant mixture. Feeding AGRADO®PLUS significantly reduced meat discoloration and lipid oxidation.

A five-year study from 2005-2009 was conducted to evaluate differences in three grazing management strategies for backgrounding calves on smooth bromegrass pastures. Economic budgets were used to calculate profit differences. Steers supplemented an average of 5.3 lb/day of distillers grains were 90 lb heavier than either of the unsupplemented groups, which resulted in increased revenue of $49.38 for supplemented steers. Land costs were the same per AUM for all treatments but were decreased on a per head basis for pastures with supplemented cattle because cattle were stocked at higher rates than the control. Five years of data were summarized to evaluate cattle and pasture performance when smooth bromegrass pastures were fertilized or cattle were supplemented daily with dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on nonfertilized pastures. Cattle were supplemented at 0.6% of BW for an average of 158 days. Supplemented cattle gained 0.59 lb/day more than unsupplemented cattle. As forage quality declined over the grazing season, ADG also declined but the cattle’s response to DDGS supplementation increased. Each 1 lb of DDGS supplement replaced approximately 1 lb of forage intake. Pastures with supplemented cattle had increased forage production compared to control pastures but …

Two species of shrimps occur in Arkansas; they include the Ohio shrimp, Macrobrachium ohione (Smith) and the Mississippi grass shrimp, Palaemonetes kadiakensis Rathbun. The present survey is based on collections made between 1974 and 2008 with additional supplemental data from museum specimens to document the overall distribution of the 2 species. Our survey found a total of only 42 specimens of M. ohione from 6 localities (2 counties) in Arkansas, all taken from the Mississippi River. Specimens were seined over sandy substrates in 0.6-0.9 m of water without vegetation. A 1914 museum collection of 5 individual M. ohione is the …

A survey of the fishes of Crooked Creek, White River Drainage, in northcentral Arkansas was conducted using personal collections, historical records, literature records, and the Arkansas Fishes Database. The study revealed a total of 65 species of fishes distributed among 14 families. Earlier records of only 36 species in 10 families were documented. This study documents a total of 29 species and four families as new to the Crooked Creek stream system. In addition, no endangered or threatened species were collected

Thermal imaging technology provides a useful tool to understand nocturnal activity of wildlife. We used thermal imaging to document American woodcock use of pine stands in Arkansas. A thermal imaging camera was used along logging roads on sampling dates ranging from December 2009 – February 2010 and in February 2011. We located 4 woodcock in 2010 in 20.27 hours of sampling within all stand types. For 11.55 h we only sampled pine seedling/clearcut stands due to vegetation structure inhibiting our ability to identify woodcock with the camera. As the number of fish reproduction studies has proliferated, so has the number of gonadal classification schemes and terms. This hasmade it difficult for both scientists and resourcemanagers to communicate and for comparisons to be made among studies. We propose the adoption of a simple, universal terminology for the phases in the reproductive cycle, which can be applied to all male and female elasmobranch and teleost fishes. These phases were chosen because they define key milestones in the reproductive cycle; the phases include immature, developing, spawning capable, regressing, and regenerating. The distribution of the Dismal Swamp Southern Bog Lemming is extended to include three counties west of the Dismal Swamp in southeastern Virginia, long considered its only location in the state. Evidence of lemmings was detected at 10 of 27 survey sites, and confirmed by trapping at three of five sites, all dominated by herbaceous vegetation.

Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of using copper sulfate (CuSO₄) as a drench in Hampshire ewes to control stomach worms (Haemonchus contortus).

A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of CuSO₄ to control gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) over a three year period. Ewes were FAMACHA scored, hematocrit evaluated for packed cell volume (PCV), and fecal egg counts (FEC) were determined from 2007 through 2009. Ewes received only CuSO₄ to control GIN. Ewes with FEC exceeding 6,000 eggs/g feces were drenched.

The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in the milk of cows in the villages of Kayseri province, Turkey. Ninety milk samples were investigated for AFM1 contamination using the enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA). The mean value of AFM1 levels was 59.9 ng/L, 95% confidence interval was 54.4-65.5 ng/L, and standard deviation was 26.6 ng/L. For 63 samples (70%) the values were significantly above the limit permitted by European Union criteria (EU) and the Turkish Food Codex (TFC) (P < 0.05). We report on 2 cases of recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) observed in Chilean Criollo horses aged 13 and 15 years. Both animals were classified as having severe RAO. The analysis of the recovered cells of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) showed high percentages of eosinophils (82% and 80% in the differential cell counts of the 2 horses) and poor responses to bronchodilator and corticosteroid drugs. The histopathological lung evaluation showed eosinophilic infiltration in the peribronchial tissue, as well as in the lumen of the bronchi and bronchioli. Disodium EDTA used as anticoagulant for common carp blood caused a significant increase and high variability in hematocrit readings comparing to the heparinized samples. Na2EDTA induced erythrocyte swelling, causing cell membrane disruption (hemolysis). The nuclei released from destroyed cells changed shape from oval to round, and underwent gradual swelling and vacuolation, followed by karyolysis. The degree of observed changes was similar at all Na2EDTA concentrations (0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/mL); on the other hand, percentage of abnormal and destroyed cells showed considerable differences among blood sampled from various carp individuals. Among 1608 Sahel goat bucks presented for slaughter at the Maiduguri Metropolitan abattoir in March-April 2007, 65.7% had plain white or black-white coat colour, and 91.2% were aged >1.5-3.0 years with mean body weights of 15.6-25.7 kg. Twenty-two (1.4%) of the mature bucks, aged 1.9 ± 0.3 years and weighing 20.6 ± 3.5 kg, had bilateral small hypoplastic testes that were symmetric, approximately 7 times smaller in weight, with a 2-fold reduction in longitudinal length and mid-circumference than the full-sized normal testes. This strain was used for transformation of Arabidopsis thaliana via the floral-dip method. The present study was aimed at pathologically and immunohistochemically evaluating the effects of interferon gamma (IFN-\gamma) and aminoguanidine (AG) in rats experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica. A total of 44 Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. With the exception of the controls (fourth group), the remaining rats were infected orally with 25 metacerceria of F. hepatica. The present study was planned to generate the G-band nomenclature of the commonly occurring Lohi sheep breed in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Whole blood samples were collected through jugular venepuncture in heparinised vacutainers. The metaphase slides were prepared using standard protocols. The results from microscopic screening of 50 good quality metaphase cells from each animal were studied and they revealed a chromosome complement of 54, XX and XY in Lohi sheep.
