Turkish Journal of Zoology

Fars province in the south of Iran was surveyed for Asilidae (Insecta: Diptera) during 2006-2007. Twenty six species, belonging to 19 genera and 7 subfamilies: Apocleinae (5 species), Asilinae (7 species), Dasypogoninae (2 species), Laphriinae (2 species), Laphystiinae (1 species), Leptogastrinae (1 species) and Stenopogoninae (8 species), were recorded. Of these, 5 species are new to the fauna of Iran. Additionally 2 subfamilies, 10 genera, and 22 species were recorded for the first time from Fars province. Distributional data for each species are included.

Distribution And Current Status Of Hesperiidae And Pieridae Species (Lepidoptera) Occurring In Bursa Province, Northwestern Turkey, Ni̇met Sema Gençer, Orkun Bariş Kovanci, Bahatti̇n Kovanci

This study was carried out in Bursa Province, Turkey, between 1995 and 2006 in order to collect data on hesperiid and pierid species, their distribution, and current status. The butterflies were caught with sweep nets from 78 localities in 16 towns in Bursa Province, northwestern Turkey. Materials were pinned with their wings spread and put into a collection after drying. In all, 822 hesperiid and 956 pierid specimens were caught, including 17 and 16 species, respectively. The hesperiid Pyrgus serratulae (Rambur, 1839) and pierid Pieris manii (Mayer, 1851) are first records for the butterfly fauna of Bursa. The horizontal and …

During 2 detailed surveys conducted along the Turkish coasts of the Aegean and Levantine seas in 2000 and 2005, respectively, 2 rare deep-water bivalve species, namely Bathyarca philippiana (Nyst, 1848) and Verticordia granulata Seguenza G., 1860, were recorded. Of these, V. granulata is new for the molluscan fauna of Turkish seas while B. philippiana is first record for the Levantine coast of Turkey. According to the literature at hand, V. granulata is also a new record for the Levantine Basin. In the present work, morphological, ecological, and distributional features of these 2 species are provided.

Different habitat types chosen from Kasnak Oak Forest Nature Reserve (Isparta, Turkey) and 3 plots with vegetation structure, were studied comparatively with Alticinae (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) species composition, its richness and abundance. The study was conducted between the months of April and October at 15-day intervals during 2005 and 2006. Sixty-six sets of data were obtained during the survey, including 22 samplings for each plot. A New Species Of Terellia Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Tephritidae) From Turkey, Murat Kütük

Terellia yukseli n. sp. was collected in Turkey from Centaurea urvillei DC. and is described, illustrated, and placed in the subgenus Cerajocera. Type locality is Niğde Sazlıca, and specimens were collected from Centaurea urvillei DC. This species is most similar to T. setifera Hendel and T. clarissima Korneyev in having entirely hyaline wing. It can be distinguished from other species of Terellia by the lack of wing spot pattern, the presence of a spinose antennal horn, and characteristic glans and aculeus. Photographs of the specimens and detailed illustrations of the genitalia structures are provided.

This study was based on 8 species of 5 genera of Phytoseiidae of the order Mesostigmata (Acari) found in 67 samples. These specimens were collected from Hakkari province in 2005 and 2006. Among the species, Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) tamaricis Kolodochka, 1982 is a new record for the Turkish fauna. The descriptions and drawings of female T. (A.) tamaricis are given in this paper. The distribution of each species, worldwide and in Turkey, is also presented.

This study comprises the Eunicidae (Polychaeta) species from İskenderun Bay and surrounding waters (Levantine Sea, Eastern Mediterranean). Benthic material was obtained from 25 stations from 0 to 100 m depths in September 2005. Ten species and 639 individuals belonging to 5 genera were found. Most of the individuals (65%) were determined among rocks and algae. Palola valida for the Mediterranean Sea, Eunice antennata and Lysidice margaritacea for the Levantine Sea, and E. vittata, Marphysa bellii, and M. sanguinea for the Levantine coast of Turkey are new records. This study was carried out in the years of 2007 and 2008 in some provinces of Turkey. Specimens of leafminers were collected on cultured and non-cultured plants during 1 year. In this study, 29 new records belonging to 7 genera were found for the Turkish fauna. With this study, the number of leafminer species, which was 136 previously, has been updated to 165 species.

This research was carried out to determine the macrobenthic crustacean species associated with mixed eelgrass beds (Zostera marina and Z. noltii) occurring in the upper-infralittoral zone of the Sinop peninsula coast (the southern Black Sea, Turkey) and their bioecolological features. From June 2004 to April 2005, investigations were seasonally performed at the depths of 2-4 m at 6 different stations chosen on the Sinop peninsula coast. This research was conducted to record the fish species inhabiting Lake Ladik and its inlet and outlet streams between July 2003 and August 2004. Electrofishing equipment, fishing cast net, fisherman's dip net, and fishing nets with different scales were used to catch fish samples. As a result of evaluated samples caught from the research area, 12 species belonging to 4 families (Cyprinidae, Balitoridae, Esocidae, and Percidae) were identified.

The relationship between the lordosis severity and swimming performance in sea bass juveniles was investigated. In total, 149 experimental animals 110-130 days old that ranged from 1.44 to 3.44 g (mean_{TW} ± SD: 2.41 ± 0.49 g) and 5.4 to 6.5 cm (mean_{TL} ± SD: 6.03 ± 0.39 cm) were used in experiments to determine critical swimming speed (U_{crit}) in water that was 14 ± 1 °C. Vertebral angle in normal healthy fish is 180°. The lordosis severity in abnormal fish is indicated by a reduction in this value. The Heteroptera fauna in east Azerbaijan and west Azerbaijan provinces in northwestern Iran was surveyed during 2005-2006. In all, 73 species from 18 families were collected and identified, of which 1 species, Mozena lunata (Burmeister, 1835) (Coreidae), is a new record for the Palearctic ecozone and 6 species are newly recorded from Iran.

The present study reports the occurrence of 2 amphipod species, Caprella andreae Mayer, 1890 and Podocerus chelonophilus Chevreux & Guerne, 1888, that appeared on the carapace of the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758) in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (Levantine Sea). The amphipod specimens were found on a male Caretta caretta captured during experimental bottom studies conducted off Samandağ, Hatay (the Turkish Mediterranean coast) on 7 April 2007. Faunistic Studies On Some Genera Of The Subfamily Ceutorhynchinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) From The Central Anatolian And The Mediterranean Regions Of Turkey, Osman Sert

Twenty-nine species belonging to 17 genera of the subfamily Ceutorhynchinae are reported from the Central Anatolian and the Mediterranean regions of Turkey. Detailed distributions of these species in these 2 regions are given. Seventeen species are newly recorded from central Anatolia and 10 from the Mediterranean region. Datonychus urticae (Boheman, 1845) is a new record for Turkey.

From 2003 to 2006, the freshwater ciliates of northeastern Azerbaijan were studied. The present paper describes a new ciliate - Gymnocyclidium nabranicum n. gen., n. sp. (Gymnocyclidiidae n. fam.) that clearly differs from other representatives of Scuticociliatida by reduction of bipolar somatic kineties to 2 or 3 short longitudinal crowns. Gymnocyclidiidae n. fam. includes 3 genera - Gymnocyclidium n. gen. (type genus), Paurotricha Dragesco and Dragesco-Kerneis, 1991 and Paracyclidium Grolière, de Puytorac, Grain, 1980.

During 2007-2008 survey conducted on the Turkey oak (Quercus cerris) in Isparta province Psilophrys parvulus (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea, Encyrtidae) and its host Kermes bacciformis (Hemiptera: Coccoidea, Kermesidae) represent new species records for Turkey. Previously, P. parvulus was known only from Italy where it was first recorded. The emergence behavior of this parasitoid differs from that of most scale insect parasitoids emerging from the anal opening of its host rather than chewing a hole in the scale insect's test to emerge.

Little is known about how avian relationships to tracts of native sod prairie compare with avian relationships to single and multiple species of cool- and warm-season grassland plantings. We compared grassland bird species richness and density in 5 grassland cover types (n = 97) in the tallgrass prairie region of eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota, 2001–2004. Grassland bird species richness was significantly higher in native sod prairies than it was in all planted cover types except warm-season mixes. Grasslands dominated by exotic species did not support as many grassland bird species or have species densities as high as grasslands …

A feeding trial was performed to investigate levels of corn-based Distillers Dried Grains with solubles (DDGS), a co-product of fuel ethanol manufacturing, used as a nutrient source for juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Three isocaloric (15.7±0.7 MJ kg-1 dry matter), isonitrogenous (29.6±1.0% crude protein) experimental diets were formulated to contain 20, 30 and 40% DDGS; a commercial diet containing fishmeal was used as a reference diet. Though the common eland (Taurotragus oryx) is not endangered, it lends itself well to the adaption of domestic assisted reproductive techniques due to its large size and calm temperament (Hansen et al., 1985). Plasma leptin concentrations in horses have been shown to vary widely. However, many factors may perturb these measurements. Previous research has documented a link between hyperinsulinemia and hyperleptinemia in horses. This condition has been speculated to be associated with components of equine metabolic syndrome, such as insulin resistance and laminitis. Transgene expression in stably transgenic organisms is affected by many factors, including the copy number of the transgene in the genome, and by interactions between the transgene and flanking DNA sequences. Transgene copy number has also been shown to effect genetic stability in transgenic plants. Two commonly used methods for transfecting cells are liposome mediated transfection and electroporation. Little is known about the mean transgene copy number or variability of the copy number with these techniques. A study was conducted to determine effects of differing fat and protein levels in commercial milk replacers on the growth performance and rumen development of neonatal Holstein calves. Fifty-three calves (23 male; 30 female) were assigned to one of three dietary treatments which included 3 milk replacers (20/20; 25/15; 28/20) fed once per day at 10% of birth weight through weaning. Since the cloning of Dolly there has been little change in the efficiency of nuclear transfer (NT). Research is beginning to investigate the characteristics of donor cells. Adiposetissue is an abundant source of adult-derived cells that have displayed “stemness” in-vitro(Gimble et al., 2003). The overall goal of this research was to define the in-vitro characteristicsof bovine adipose-derived adult stem cells (ADAS) for the use in NT.
