A new species, Quadrastichus dasineurae n. sp. (Hym.: Eulophidae), was reared from galls of Dasineura oleae (Loew) (Dipt.: Cecidomyiidae) on leaves and shoots of Olea europea L. as a larval parasitoid of the host in Hatay, a province of Turkey. This paper details the new species and some biological data.

This study comprises the Eunicidae (Polychaeta) species from İskenderun Bay and surrounding waters (Levantine Sea, Eastern Mediterranean). Benthic material was obtained from 25 stations from 0 to 100 m depths in September 2005. Ten species and 639 individuals belonging to 5 genera were found. Most of the individuals (65%) were determined among rocks and algae. Palola valida for the Mediterranean Sea, Eunice antennata and Lysidice margaritacea for the Levantine Sea, and E. vittata, Marphysa bellii, and M. sanguinea for the Levantine coast of Turkey are new records. Revised Checklist Of Turkish Agromyzidae (Diptera) Fauna Of Turkey, Hasan Sungur Ci̇velek, Emi̇ne Çikman, Oktay Dursun

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study was carried out in the years of 2007 and 2008 in some provinces of Turkey. Specimens of leafminers were collected on cultured and non-cultured plants during 1 year. In this study, 29 new records belonging to 7 genera were found for the Turkish fauna. With this study, the number of leafminer species, which was 136 previously, has been updated to 165 species.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This paper aims to elucidate the structure and design of radulae of 2 species of limpet, namely Patella caerulea and P. rustica. Samples were examined by light microscope and SEM. Although the general formula is the same, the pattern of each dentition differed between the 2 species. General morphology and histology of odontophore showed structural significance of the organ, suggesting a further study to confirm ecological choice of the genus at different intertidal levels.

Four Euphorinae and Opiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitoid species, Biosteres (Chilotrichia) arenarius Stelfox, 1959, Opius (Misophthora) bulgaricus Fischer, 1959, O. (Phaedrotoma) umlalaziensis (Fischer, 1996), and Perilitus (Microctonus) cerealium Haliday, 1835 were recorded for the first time in Turkey. All species were collected from the Adıyaman province in 2004 and 2005. The general distribution and known hosts of each species are presented in this paper.

This research was carried out to determine the macrobenthic crustacean species associated with mixed eelgrass beds (Zostera marina and Z. noltii) occurring in the upper-infralittoral zone of the Sinop peninsula coast (the southern Black Sea, Turkey) and their bioecolological features. From June 2004 to April 2005, investigations were seasonally performed at the depths of 2-4 m at 6 different stations chosen on the Sinop peninsula coast. External Morphology Of Eggs Of Macronemurus Bilineatus And Megistopus Flavicornis (Neuroptera, Myrmeleontidae): A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study, Zeki̇ye Suludere, Savaş Canbulat, Selami̇ Candan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The eggs of Megistopus flavicornis (Rossi, 1790) and Macronemurus bilineatus Brauer, 1868 were studied by light and scanning electron microscope and are described in detail in this paper. Both species have roughly elongate and cylindrical eggs with rounded ends and have 2 flattened disc-like micropylar processes at the opposite poles. The chorionic surface is tuberculated and differs between the 2 species. The eggs of M. flavicornis additionally have some rows containing polygonal pattern of exochorion near the micropyles. Moreover, a number of morphological differences between the 2 species are noted.

The karyotypic and cytogenetic characteristics of southern catfish, Glyptothorax silviae Coad, 1981, was investigated for the first time by examining metaphase chromosome spreads obtained from gill epithelial and kidney cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 52. The karyotype consisted of 9 pairs of metacentric, 14 pairs of submetacentric, and 3 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. The arm number was 98. No heteromorphic sex chromosomes were cytologically detected in this catfish. Comparison of the chromosome number of this fish with that of the other members of subfamily Glyptosterninae shows that 2n = 52 may be regarded as …

The relationship between the lordosis severity and swimming performance in sea bass juveniles was investigated. In total, 149 experimental animals 110-130 days old that ranged from 1.44 to 3.44 g (mean_{TW} ± SD: 2.41 ± 0.49 g) and 5.4 to 6.5 cm (mean_{TL} ± SD: 6.03 ± 0.39 cm) were used in experiments to determine critical swimming speed (U_{crit}) in water that was 14 ± 1 °C. Vertebral angle in normal healthy fish is 180°. The lordosis severity in abnormal fish is indicated by a reduction in this value. The Heteroptera fauna in east Azerbaijan and west Azerbaijan provinces in northwestern Iran was surveyed during 2005-2006. In all, 73 species from 18 families were collected and identified, of which 1 species, Mozena lunata (Burmeister, 1835) (Coreidae), is a new record for the Palearctic ecozone and 6 species are newly recorded from Iran.

The present study reports the occurrence of 2 amphipod species, Caprella andreae Mayer, 1890 and Podocerus chelonophilus Chevreux & Guerne, 1888, that appeared on the carapace of the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758) in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (Levantine Sea). The amphipod specimens were found on a male Caretta caretta captured during experimental bottom studies conducted off Samandağ, Hatay (the Turkish Mediterranean coast) on 7 April 2007. The fatty acid content and chemical composition of retail samples of beef and lamb meat were investigated. Fifty beef and lamb chops were purchased from different supermarkets in İstanbul on separate occasions. The average muscle fatty acid content was 2395 and 2257 mg/100 g of muscle for beef and lamb, respectively. Saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid contents were 1000 and 940 mg/100 g, and 199 and 261 mg/100 g of muscle for beef and lamb, respectively. Overall results indicate that, particularly before the Sacrifice Holiday, concentrate-based feeding of livestock increases and this has an adverse effect on the n-6/n-3 ratio …

Lung, trachea, and serum samples obtained from turkeys showing clinical signs of respiratory disease were examined for the presence of Bordetella avium infection (bordetellosis) using culture, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The material of this study consisted of 2 live turkeys at the age of 24 weeks with respiratory distress, nasal discharge, and cough that had been brought to the Microbiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Adnan Menderes University. Fatal pulmonary aspergillosis and AA type amyloid accumulations in the liver and spleen are described in a female ostrich (Struthio camelus). The animal had had respiratory problems and long-term inappetence over an 8-week period. Necropsy revealed that several soft, grayish to white nodules ranging from 1 to 3 mm in diameter were scattered throughout the lungs and thoracic air sacs. Prominent enlargement of the liver and spleen was observed. No gross lesions were found in the other organs studied. In order to evaluate heat tolerance, physiological constants of 32 cows were measured (Chinampo: n = 12; Holstein: n = 10; Jersey: n = 10). From June to December 2006, rectal temperature and respiratory rate were recorded every Monday at 0600 and 1700 h. Holstein rectal temperature was affected by heat most, followed by Jersey, and Chinampo (the most heat-resistant). Respiratory rate of the 3 breeds was affected by climatic factors, but the Holstein and Jersey cows registered values higher than those of Chinampo cows. The effect of acupuncture therapy on the healing process of the calcaneal tendon (tendo calcaneus communis) of the dog was evaluated after tendon splitting in 10 adult mixed breed dogs. Complete, full thickness splitting of the right Achilles tendon, 2 cm in length, was performed using a scalpel blade. The dogs were randomly divided into 2 groups (group 1 and 2) of 5 dogs each. This study was carried out to determine the effects of oxalic acid (OA) on reducing Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) populations in honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies in the fall. Twenty honeybee colonies, in wooden Langstroth hives, were used in this experiment. Average Varroa infestation levels (%) of the OA and control groups were 25.87% and 24.57% on adult workers before the treatments. Clinical and laboratory findings recorded in 10 dogs naturally infected with Hepatozoon canis in the Aegean region of Turkey were reported. The diagnosis was made by finding H. canis gamonts within leucocytes in Giemsa-stained blood smears. H. canis parasitaemia level was calculated manually by counting 500 neutrophils in blood smears. Parasitaemia varied from 1% to 23% of the circulating neutrophils. Anorexia, fever, depression, weight loss, and lymphadenopathy are the main clinical signs in infected dogs. Total of 500 samples from triceps, gluteal and diaphragm muscles, kidney, and liver, were obtained randomly from beef carcasses of a slaughterhouse in Tabriz. We measured oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline (TCs) residues by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Seventy four percent of samples (380 samples) had detectable TCs residues. The mean amounts of oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline residues in all samples were 52.2, 33.8, and 125.2 µg/kg, respectively. The VRK1 protein kinase has been implicated as a proproliferative factor. Genetic analyses of mutant alleles of the Drosophila and Caenorhabditis elegans VRK1 homologs have revealed phenotypes ranging from embryonic lethality to mitotic and meiotic defects with resultant sterility. Genetic and environmental effects on incidence of Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease (PCVAD) and immune responses to Porcine Circovirus 2 (PCVZ), and their relationships with body weights were studied in 3,440 pigs of the Nebraska litter size selection lines. Pigs were weighed at birth, weaning, 65, and 180 days of age and scored for symptoms of PCVAD every 10 days from 70 to 180 days of age. Necropsies were performed to confirm accuracy of scoring. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of high concentrations of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS; 30%) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of gilts, during growing-finishing, that were previously fed high concentrations of DDGS during the nursery phase. Overall (week I to 16), the following observations are noteworthy: 1) among pigs that were fed DDGS in the nursery, average daily gain (ADG) and final body weight (BW) tended (P < 0.10) to be lower during growing-finishing compared to pigs that did not receive DDGS in the nursery; 2) among pigs that received DDGS during growing-finishing, ADG tended (P < 0.10) to be lower compared to pigs that did not receive DDGS during growing-finishing; and 3) among pigs that received DDGS in both the nursery and during growing-finishing, ADG and final BW was decreased (P < 0.04) compared to pigs with no prior exposure to DDGS. With respect to carcass characteristics, loth-rib back fat was greater (P < 0.05) at the end of finisher 2 among pigs that did not receive DDGS in the nursery and hot carcass weight tended (P < 0.07) to be decreased among pigs that received DDGS in both the nursery and during growing finishing. This research indicates that the inclusion of high concentrations of DDGS in both the nursery and growing finishing periods may result in negative effects on growth performance and carcass characteristics

Preliminary experiments (reported in the 2008 Nebraska Swine Report) suggest that progeny health status may be affected by dam parity. However, the preliminary experiments only included a small population of sows and their progeny Therefore, the objective of the current experiment was to evaluate litter performance and the production and passive transfer of immunoglobulins (Ig) in dams (PI vs. P4) and their progeny. Litter birth weight tended (P < 0.10) to be greater for P4 progeny compared to P1 progeny. No effects of dam parity were observed on circulating Ig in dams during gestation or at parturition. However, concentrations of IgA tended (P <0.09) to be greater for P4 sows compared to P1 gilts in samples of colostrum and milk and serum IgG concentrations were greater (P < 0.02) for P4 progeny compared to P1 progeny across all preweaning samples. These results suggest that litter performance and health status may be affected by dam parity.

Forty pigs were used in a 14-week, +phase regime study conducted to evaluate the feeding value of diets with varying concentrations of DDGS for growing-finishing pig formulated on a standardized ileal digestibility (SID) lysine (lys) basis, DDGS withdrawal at the last feeding phase, and ractopamine (RAC) supplementation four weeks prior harvesting. Treatments consisted in 0, 15 or 40% dietary DDGS inclusion supplemented or not with RAC (4.5 ppm) four weeks prior harvesting. Two-hundred and forty pigs (61.73 lb) were used in a 16-week study conducted to evaluate the feeding value of diets with varying concentrations of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) for growing-finishing pigs. Pigs were assigned to one of four dietary treatments. Treatments consisted of a standard diet formulated on a standardized ileal digestible lysine (SID lys) basis in which a portion of dietary corn and soybean meal were replaced to include 0,5, 10 or 15% of DDGS in a 4-phase feeding regime.
