External Morphology Of Eggs Of Macronemurus Bilineatus And Megistopus Flavicornis (Neuroptera, Myrmeleontidae): A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study, Zeki̇ye Suludere, Savaş Canbulat, Selami̇ Candan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The eggs of Megistopus flavicornis (Rossi, 1790) and Macronemurus bilineatus Brauer, 1868 were studied by light and scanning electron microscope and are described in detail in this paper. Both species have roughly elongate and cylindrical eggs with rounded ends and have 2 flattened disc-like micropylar processes at the opposite poles. The chorionic surface is tuberculated and differs between the 2 species. The eggs of M. flavicornis additionally have some rows containing polygonal pattern of exochorion near the micropyles. Moreover, a number of morphological differences between the 2 species are noted.

The Effect Of Queen Removal On Sexual Production In The Bumble Bee, Bombus Terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae), Ayhan Gösteri̇t, Aşkin Gali̇ç, Fehmi̇ Gürel

We analyzed the effects of queen removal on male and queen production in the bumble bee, Bombus terrestris. In total, 43 Bombus terrestris colonies were reared under standard laboratory rearing conditions. Before the competition point, when the colonies comprised 35-40 workers and many diploid larvae, we removed the queens from 20 randomly selected colonies to test the effects of queenlessness. The timing of gyne production in queenless colonies (25.6 ± 1.5 days) was significantly earlier than in queenright colonies (32.8 ± 3.2 days). The karyotypic and cytogenetic characteristics of southern catfish, Glyptothorax silviae Coad, 1981, was investigated for the first time by examining metaphase chromosome spreads obtained from gill epithelial and kidney cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 52. The karyotype consisted of 9 pairs of metacentric, 14 pairs of submetacentric, and 3 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. The arm number was 98. No heteromorphic sex chromosomes were cytologically detected in this catfish. Comparison of the chromosome number of this fish with that of the other members of subfamily Glyptosterninae shows that 2n = 52 may be regarded as …

The characteristic features of Oecobius rhodiensis Kritscher, 1966 and Oecobius teliger O.P.-Cambridge, 1872, which are recorded for the first time in Turkey, are presented in this paper. Identification keys for the Turkish species, digital and SEM photographs, and drawings of genitalia of the new recorded species are also given together with their zoogeographical distributions.

The parasitoid complex of several lepidopteran pests were studied in maize plantations in the Southeast Anatolian Region of Turkey during 2003-2004. Apenteles sp., Bracon hebetor (Say.), Chelonus oculator Panzer, Meteorus rubens Nees (Hym.: Braconidae), Conomorium patulum Walk. (Hym.: Pteromalidae), Diadegma crassicornis (Gray.) subsp. africator Aubert (Hym.: Ichneumonidae), Euplectrus sp. New Records Of The Oppioid Mites (Acari: Oribatida) For The Turkish Fauna From Artvin Province, Ayşe Toluk, Nusret Ayyildiz

Four oppioid (Oribatida:Oppioidea) mite species, namely Berniniella (Berniniella) parasigma Iturrondobeitia, 1987, Autogneta (Rhaphigneta) numidiana (Grandjean, 1960), Conchogneta dalecarlica (Forsslund, 1947), and Lauroppia tenuipectinata Subías and Rodríguez, 1987, recorded from Artvin province are given with their original figures. Some of their morphological features and distributions in the world are also presented. All of them are new records for the Turkish fauna.

New distribution areas for previously known species, Dioctria abdominalis Becker, 1923, Dioctria atricapilla Meigen, 1804, Dioctria flavipennis Meigen, 1820, and Dioctria valida Loew, 1856, are added.

The histological changes of gonads were studied in Aphanius persicus from the Barm-e-Shoor spring (south of Iran). The gonads were extracted and prepared histologically. The maturity stage of each specimen was examined according to size and weight of gonad, degree of occupation in the body cavity, the type and number of germinal cells (in testis) and follicles (in ovary). We have described 5 sexual stages for females and 4 for males. The total length and body and gonad weight of each specimen increased with increasing maturity stages. The early developmental stages of the Pisidae crab, Doclea muricata (Herbst, 1788), and the Epialtidae crab, Acanthonyx limbatus (A. Milne Edwards, 1862), from Pakistan are described for the first time. Zoeae I and II of Doclea muricata and Acanthonyx limbatus were obtained from field-collected ovigerous females that were kept under laboratory conditions. These larval stages are described, illustrated, and compared with those of earlier studies of known species of the genera. Studies of Opisthobranchia diversity in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea are scarce. In the present study Opisthobranchia species collected along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Turkey in 2004 and 2005 were evaluated. Samples were taken from Çanakkale Strait and the northern coast of Gelibolu Peninsula in the northern Aegean Sea, and from Bodrum, Bay of Fethiye, Kaş, and Adrasan along Turkey´s Mediterranean coast. Length-Weight Relationships Of Fishes From Gökova Bay, Turkey (Aegean Sea), Tevfi̇k Ceyhan, Okan Akyol, Mustafa Erdem

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Length-weight relationships (LWRs) are presented for 17 fish species caught from Gökova Bay (southeastern Aegean Sea) during the 2006 fishing season. Fish samples were collected from small-scale trammel nets and longline fisheries. The values of b ranged from 2.086 (±0.152) for Sphyraena sphyraena to 3.499 (±0.058) for Scomber japonicus. The median value of b was 3.055 (±0.081). The r^2 values ranged from 0.712 for Sphyraena chrysotaenia to 0.996 for Scomber japonicus and all relationships were highly significant (P < 0.001). Estimated LWR parameters of 4 species, Dicentrarchus labrax, Seriola dumerili, Siganus luridus and Sphyraena sphyraena, for Turkish waters are presented for the first time.

Zooplankton Composition And Abundance In Lake Eğrigöl, A High Mountain Lake (Gündoğmuş, Antalya), Cem Aygen, Di̇dem Özdemi̇r Mi̇s, M. Ruşen Ustaoğlu, Süleyman Balik

Field studies were conducted in July and August 2000, and in June and September 2001 in order to determine the zooplankton composition and abundance of Lake Eğrigöl, a high mountain lake located 2060 m a.s.l. in the middle Taurus Mountain Range. In total, 41 species were found, including 30 Rotifera, 8 Cladocera, and 3 Copepoda. Based on the number of species and their abundance (individuals m^{-3}), rotifers were the dominant group (49.75%-90.92%), followed by Cladocera (6.54%-27.52%), and Copepoda (2.54%-22.72%). All taxa were first records for the lake.

Some ecological requirements of aquatic Coleoptera species were studied in a natural lake. Water beetle samples, collected in 2007 from the National Park Sahara-Karagöl belonging to the families Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae, Hydrochidae, and Dytiscidae were identified and listed. Both physical (conductivity and temperature) and chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, hardness, organic matter, chloride, phosphate, and some metal ions) parameters of the inhabited water were measured.

Multivariate Morphometric Study On Apis Florea Distributed In Iran, Ayça Özkan, Mohammed M. Gharleko, Berna Özden, İrfan Kandemi̇r

Multivariate Morphometric and Spatial Autocorrelation Analyses were performed to determine the morphometric variation in Apis florea colonies representing 13 localities from 4 states on the coastal north-south diagonal in Iran. New morphometric characters (hind wing length, hind wing width, and hind wing angles) were also measured to determine the usefulness of these characters for Apis florea. Analysis of variance of new morphometric characters showed that 7 out of the 8 hind wing variables displayed statistically significant differences among populations (P < 0.05). The scatter plot from Canonical Variate Analysis revealed that the colonies from north (Ilam, Khuzestan, and Bushehr states) showed an overlapping distribution. The colonies from south (Hormuzgan state) formed a non-overlapping distant cluster. Based on the spatial autocorrelation analysis, 14 correlograms were significant for morphometric characters (According to the Bonferroni criterion). Six characters (CuB, C.Ind, HWW, B4, D7, and I13) showed clinal type correlogram.

The parasitoids of the small poplar longhorn beetle, Saperda populnea (L.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), were studied in the Aras Valley (Kars and Erzurum provinces), Turkey, during 2006-2007. Five parasitoid species, Paraperithous gnathaulax (Thomson), Dolichomitus populneus (Ratzeburg), Dolichomitus tuberculatus (Geoffroy) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Ipbiaulax impostor (Scopoli) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), and Billaea irrorata (Meig.) (Diptera: Tachinidae), were reared from the over-wintering larvae living in the galls of S. populnea. Dolichomitus populneus was the most numerous of the parasitoids and accounted for 55% of all parasitoids reared. The pathogens and parasites of Pyllotreta undulata Kutschera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) collected from 5 localities in the Black Sea region of Turkey were investigated. Four different types of pathogens and parasites were recorded in adults of P. undulata: gregarine, microsporidium, and 2 nematodes, namely 1 Howardula species and 1 Hexamermis species. Gregarine and Howardula were the most common pathogen and parasite in P. undulata populations. There is the first record of a Hexamermis (Nematoda: Mermithidae) parasite from P. undulata in Turkey.

Numerous studies with experimental animals have shown that neem seed extracts have transient and reversible effects on sterility. NeemAzal-T/S^® (1%) was fed to 3 experimental animal groups via stomach intubation (5, 15, and 25 mg/kg) for 6 days and the control group was given only tap water. Hematological parameters were determined on the 4^th and 9^th days of the experiment. Species composition, nocturnal activity and population dynamics of mosquitoes in the Aras Valley of Turkey are studied. Seven New Jersey light traps were activated two nights per month at different sampling sites showing various habitats such as riverside, orchard, roadside, village, wooded area, agricultural area and pasture in 30 km^^{2} area. The night was divided into 6 equal nocturnal periods (18^{00}-20^{00} h, 20^{00}-22^{00} h, 22^{00}-24^{00} h, 24^{00}-02^{00} h, 02^{00}-04^{00} h, 04^{00}-06^{00} h), and the specimens were collected in consecutive 2 hours. The ichthyofaunal changes in Lake Eğirdir between 1915 and 2007 were reviewed. It was understood that the most drastic change in the ichthyofauna of Lake Eğirdir occurred in 1955 with the introduction of pike-perch (Sander lucioperca), and that the process of change continued with the addition of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) in 1996 and big scale sand smelt (Atherina boyeri) in 2003. Today, there are 15 fish taxa (10 native, 5 non-native) in Lake Eğirdir. Turkish Journal of Zoology

A new species, Quadrastichus dasineurae n. sp. (Hym.: Eulophidae), was reared from galls of Dasineura oleae (Loew) (Dipt.: Cecidomyiidae) on leaves and shoots of Olea europea L. as a larval parasitoid of the host in Hatay, a province of Turkey. This paper details the new species and some biological data.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This paper aims to elucidate the structure and design of radulae of 2 species of limpet, namely Patella caerulea and P. rustica. Samples were examined by light microscope and SEM. Although the general formula is the same, the pattern of each dentition differed between the 2 species. General morphology and histology of odontophore showed structural significance of the organ, suggesting a further study to confirm ecological choice of the genus at different intertidal levels.

Four Euphorinae and Opiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitoid species, Biosteres (Chilotrichia) arenarius Stelfox, 1959, Opius (Misophthora) bulgaricus Fischer, 1959, O. (Phaedrotoma) umlalaziensis (Fischer, 1996), and Perilitus (Microctonus) cerealium Haliday, 1835 were recorded for the first time in Turkey. All species were collected from the Adıyaman province in 2004 and 2005. The general distribution and known hosts of each species are presented in this paper.

Faunistic data of the 16 Cremastinae species from Turkey were obtained. Four species of them are new records for the Turkish fauna. The males of Temelucha turcata Kolarov and Beyarslan were described for the first time. Zoogeographical characterizations of each individual species were summarized.

The objectives of this study were to provide an overview of fluid milk quality in the U.S., determine if there is a correlation between rapid and traditional tests, determine if results from different analyses correlate with a sensory analysis and to determine any correlation between any of the analyses done in this study. Inheritance Of Shoulder Spotting In The Tetra, Hyphessobrycon Bentosi Characidae, Jack Frankel

The tetra (Hyphessobrycon bentosi) exhibits two phenotypes associated with shoulder spotting. Fish possess ei-ther a prominent black vertical spot located directly behind the operculum (H. b. bentosi,  bentosi  white  tip  tetra) or  lack  this spot (H. b. rosaceus, rosy tetra). Segregation patterns observed from the progenies of ten different crosses suggest that the  inheritance  of  these  phenotypes  is  controlled  by  two  autosomal  loci  acting  in  a complementary  fashion,  with  domi-nance at both loci required for the expression of the spotted phenotype.
