Out-of-feed events are a growing problem in nursery and grow-finish­ facilities due to issues associated with feed delivery to bulk bins and bridging of feed in bulk bins. Reports of bridging are increasing as producers continue to reduce the fineness of grind for complete diets in order to improve feed conversion. A study was conducted to examine the effect of repeated out-of-feed events and diet particle size on barrow performance in a wean-to-finish facility beginning six weeks after weaning. Increasing concentrations of vitamin B12 were fed to 144 weanling pigs (weaned 13-14 days) in two, five-week trials. Pigs were fed one of six diets: NC, negative control, basal diet without supplemented vitamin B12; or the basal diet with the inclusion of 100% (1X, 7.94 μg/lb), 200% (2X, 15.87 μg/lb), 400% (4X, 31.75 μg/lb), 800% (8X, 63.49 μg/lb), or 1,600% (16X, 126.98 μg/lb) of NRC requirements for the 11- to 22-lb pig. During a field excursion in eastern Turkey and the Zanjan province of Iran, 9 rodent species were captured, and the diploid number of chromosomes (2n), the number of autosomal arms (FNa) and the fundamental number (FN) were determined for these species. Microtus schidlovskii with 2n = 60 and FNa = 58 was recorded for the first time from Özalp (Van) and Yüksekova (Hakkari). The karyological record of Meriones vinogradovi in Turkey was also given for the first time. The efficacy of killed vaccines generally is not equal to live vaccines. However, due to safety and ease of production, they remain a vital part of controlling and preventing diseases. In this study, the immune response to four different vaccination preparation techniques for the agent of bordetellosis of turkeys, Bordetella avium (BA), was compared. Preparation/inactivation techniques included (1) formalin inactivation, (2) opsonization of formalin-inactivated BA, (3) buffered acetic-acid BA inactivation, or (4) opsonization of buffered acetic-acid-inactivated BA. Much recent research on mechanisms of learning and memory focuses on the role of heterosynaptic neuromodulatory signaling. Such neuromodulation appears to stabilize Hebbian synaptic changes underlying associative learning, thereby extending memory. Previous comparisons of three related sea-hares ( Mollusca, Opisthobranchia) uncovered interspecific variation in neuromodulatory signaling: strong in Aplysia californica, immeasureable in Dolabrifera dolabrifera, and intermediate in Phyllaplysia taylori. The present study addressed whether this interspecific variation in neuromodulation is correlated with memory of associative ( classical conditioning) learning. This dissertation aims to understand the history of, and possible alternatives to, managerial responses to socio-ecological issues by examining one of the largest natural resource management failures of the twentieth century—the collapse of the Northern cod fisheries off Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. In 1992, the Northern cod fishery off Newfoundland and Labrador (the world's largest ground fishery) was shut down. The Northern cod had been reduced to 1% of their historic spawning biomass and cod fishing as a way of life had come to an end after a 500 year history. Biological resource banking is becoming important for endangered species conservation. A series of experiments were conducted to address issues concerning collection and utilization of biomaterials from Gulf Coast Native (GCN) sheep (model species) (Ovis aries) and Eland antelope (Taurotragus oryx). In the first experiment, two ejaculates were collected 10 minutes apart from each of five rams three times a week for three weeks to maximize output and minimize handling time. Semen volume, concentration and total number of spermatozoa were significantly greater in first ejaculates, whereas pre-cooled, cooled and post-thaw motility, as well as sperm survival, were greater in second ejaculates. …

In this study, the spawning period, length at first sexual maturity and fecundity of the pike (Esox lucius L., 1758) population in Lake Karamık between March 2002 and February 2003 were investigated. Mean length at first reproduction (L_m) was determined as 19.7 cm for female pike. The monthly values of the gonadosomatic index indicated that spawning occurred between February and March. The relative fecundity was determined as 45.7 ± 4.9 eggs g^{-1} total body weight. A two-year experiment compared two systems for wintering pregnant heifers. The standard system used by the ranch served as the control (CON) and the treatment system (TRT) included a dried distillers grains based supplement. Heifers in the TRT system were heavier and had greater body condition score at end of supplementation. Calving difficulty, percentage of live calves weaned and subsequent pregnancy rate were similar between systems. Calves born to heifers in the TRT system were heavier at birth and weaning. Melengestrol acetate (MGA), which is commonly used in the beef industry to manipulate ovarian activity of females, was fed to bulls at two times during development, prepubertal (5.5 to 7.5 months) and peri-pubertal (6.5 to 9.5 months), to determine effects on testes size, scrotal circumference, body weight, and/or hormone production. We can conclude that feeding bulls MGA during the prepubertal and peri-pubertal time can alter body weight and testosterone production.

Digestibility of undegradable intake protein of subirrigated meadows, upland native range, smooth bromegrass, and other feedstuffs used in several growing trials was measured using the mobile nylon bag technique. In general, as the grazing season progressed, undegradable intake protein (UIP) digestibility of grazed forages decreased. Also, UIP digestibility was highly variable among feedstuffs. Compared to the constant 80% digestibility of UIP used by the 1996 Beef NRC, grazed and harvested forages tend to have much lower UIP digestibility values while the supplemental protein sources evaluated tend to have higher UIP digestibility values.

An economic analysis was conducted using feedlot performance, current feed ingredient prices, trucking, and cost of feeding inputs to determine economics of feeding wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) at five dietary inclusions. The analysis also incorporated positive corn basis into the model. Cattle returns are greatest when incorporated WDGS is fed at 30 to 40% of DM at feedlots located between 0 and 60 miles from the plant. As distance of the feedlot increases from 60 to 100 miles from the plant, optimum inclusion is between 20 and 30% of dietary DM. Either a 5 or 10 cent positive …

To assess growth promoting agents efficacy among seasons, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, blood metabolites, and tympanic temperature were measured in summer and winter studies. Within each season, pens of heifers were assigned to one of six growth promotant treatments. Season by growth promotant treatment interactions (P < 0.05) indicated that the combination of estrogen and trenbolone acetate increased triiodothyronine in the winter, whereas trenbolone acetate alone decreased both triiodothyronine and thyroxine in the winter. Maximum tympanic temperature was greater (P < 0.01) in the summer than in the winter, while minimum tympanic temperature was lowered (P < 0.01) in the summer. Changes in blood metabolite levels resulting from the use of growth promotants do not appear to substantially influence seasonal changes in body temperature.

We identified 32 compounds that inhibit 13 to 100% of the methane produced by in vitro cultures of rumen fluid and have the potential to inhibit enteric methanogenesis in ruminant animals. The compounds are analogous to a substrate in the methane biosynthesis pathway, and may inhibit methane production yet not affect other organisms in the rumen.

This study analyzes the benefit of Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) insurance to cattle producers in reducing basis risk. Nebraska producers insuring fed cattle with LRP realize a basis risk reduction of one-third to one-half compared to futures or options hedging. Nebraska feeder cattle producers using LRP experience only a slight reduction in basis risk. Reduced basis risk results in smaller errors when forecasting basis levels for future time periods. With more accurate basis forecasts, producers can better estimate net hedged selling prices and, consequently, future cash flows.

A commercial feedlot study determined manure nutrient flow in six feedlots using a corn and by-product based diet with an average P content of 0.39% (DM basis), and a range of 0.34 to 0.48%. Mass balances for N and P were conducted on each pen. The average feed nutrient intake was 0.52 lb N/head/day (64.0 + 7.6 lb/animal fed) and 0.09 lb P/head/day (10.9 + 2.2 lb/animal fed). Based upon averages from the 6,366 head of cattle, 11.5% of the feed nitrogen and 16.9% of the feed phosphorus were retained by the animal with the remaining nutrients excreted. The harvested …

Seven muscles from 10 beef carcasses were cooked quickly or slowly and held 0 or 1 hour to explore the influence of cooking rate and holding time on beef flavor. Off-flavor intensity was lowest when beef was cooked slowly (on a 300°F grill instead of a 480°F grill) and when it was held for 1 hour prior to sensory evaluation. The infraspinatus (flat iron) had the least intense off-flavor and the vastus intermedius (knuckle bottom) had the most intense off-flavor. Slow cooking or holding for 1 hour prior to consumption reduced the intensity of off-flavor in value cuts.

Crossbred steers fed with varying levels of wet distillers grains to test the incidence of liver-like off-flavors. USDA Choice steaks, when compared to USDA Select, had significantly higher trained sensory muscle fiber tenderness scores, less detectable connective tissue, higher juiciness scores, and more intense off-flavor ratings. USDA Choice steaks had a higher percentage of panelists denote liver-like and metallic off-flavors. Wet distillers grains did not significantly influence off-flavor indicating these by-products can be used to finish cattle without causing detrimental effects on the sensory profile.

Twenty-one lotic and lentic environments throughout central and northern Arkansas were surveyed for the presence of leeches during June 2004 and April, July - October 2005. Fourteen species of leeches {Helobdella elongata, Helobdella papillata, Helobdella stagnalis, Placobdella cryptobranchii, Placobdella multilineata, Placobdella ornata, Placobdella papillifera, Placobdella parasitica, Placobdella phaler a, Placobdella picta, Haemopis marmorata, Erpobdella fervida, Erpobdella microstoma, and Erpobdella punctata) representing 3 families were collected. We document the fourth record of a dicephalic western diamondback rattlesnake, Crotalus atrox, collected on 17 September 2005 in Tom Green County, Texas, along with features of its external and internal anatomy, which are compared with normal C. atrox neonates. This is only the second reported case of complete anatomical duplication of the respiratory system and nearly complete duplication of the circulatory and digestive systems in dicephalic snakes. In addition, we present a summary of dicephalism among 10 species within the genus Crotalus.

The eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius) is a small carnivore found across much of the central and southeastern United States, and while once common, this species has become rare in most obits range. We used harvest records collected by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission from 1941-2004 to examine historic and current distribution and long-term harvest dynamics of this species in Arkansas.
