Errata are given for the checklist of Tabanidae fauna of Turkey published by Kılıç in 1999 and additional records and localities reported after 1999 for previously known species are added to this checklist. With these additions, the number of species and subspecies is 164 and 13, respectively, for the Tabanidae fauna of Turkey.

The Fauna And Systematics Of The Genus Tephritis Latreille, 1804 (Diptera: Tephritidae) With A Key To The Species Of Tephritis In Turkey, Murat Kütük

This study is based on Tephritis species collected from 25 provinces in Turkey during 1999-2003. Twenty-two species of Tephritis were recognized, of which Tephritis mariannae Merz is a new record for the fauna of Turkey. Identification keys to the species were prepared. The locality, host plants and figures of wing pattern of each species are given. Distribution of the species in Turkey and worldwide is included.

The Feeding Biology Of Ophisops Elegans Menetries, 1832 (Reptilia: Lacertidae) Populations Of The Bursa Region, Abdulmüttali̇p Akkaya, İsmai̇l Hakki Uğurtaş

The feeding biology of Ophisops elegans inhabiting Bursa was investigated. Stomach contents of 66 adult (28 males, 38 females) specimens collected from 3 localities were investigated by numerical analysis. Most of the foods of the Ophisops elegans specimens were insects (64.58%), the majority of which were of larval form (19.44%). Two specimens that were collected from Gürsu were maintained in a terrarium to observe their feeding behaviors. During observations, Ophisops elegans exhibited various feeding behaviors depending on the type of prey and sometimes bit and ate pieces of its prey (legs, wings, etc.).

This research was carried out along the Turkish Aegean Sea coast (from Saros Bay in the north to Turunç-Marmaris in the south) in order to determine the Isopod fauna. A total of 163 samplings were conducted at 23 stations and 17 different biotopes, from which 3209 specimens were collected belonging to 18 families, 29 genera and 50 species. Four new localities of Leptotyphlops macrorhynchus (JAN, 1862) were recorded in Turkey. Two of the localities were found within the previously known distribution area on the east side of the Fırat River, and the other 2 were found on the west side. As a result, the distribution range of Leptotyphlops macrorhynchus has been extended. Information about the morphological features of the captured specimens is given.

The Little-Known Free-Living Ciliates From The Soils Of Pirgulian State Reserve (Eastern Azerbaijan), Ilham Alekperov, Jamilya Sadikhova

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The species diversity of the soil free-living ciliates of 3 parts of Pirgulian State Reserve was investigated. In total, 120 species of free-living ciliates were found. Five of them (Enchelys vermiformis F., 1986, Epispathidium terricola F., 1986, Drepanomonas sphagni Kahl, 1931, Frontonia terricola F., 1986, and Cirrophrya terricola F., 1986) are new for the Caucasus fauna. The description of 5 species are based on the observations of living specimens and the analysis of total slides impregnated by silver nitrate.

New Records And Description Of A New Subspecies For The Water Mite Fauna (Acari, Hydrachnidia) Of Turkey From The Eastern Black Sea Coast, Vladimir Pesic, Davut Turan

A new subspecies, Mixobates brachypalpis ozkani subsp. nov., is described from a stream in the Rize region (Eastern Black Sea coast, Turkey). The new subspecies can be easily distinguished from the type material of M. brachypalpis, a species reported only from the locus typicus in Russia, by the more elongated and slender I-L-5/6. In addition, 3 water mite species (Torrenticola oraviensis (Láska, 1953), Torrenticola thori (Halbert, 1944) and Mideopsis roztoczensis Biesiadka and Kovalik, 1979) are reported for the first time from Turkey.

The fecundity and egg size of 3 shrimp species, Crangon crangon, Palaemon adspersus, and Palaemon elegans, were studied off Sinop Peninsula in the Black Sea. Shrimps were sampled by beam trawl with a beam length of 3 m and 10 mm codend mesh size. Mean fecundity of C. crangon females was 2297 ± 134 (range: 910-3630). Mean egg size (shortest x longest axis) at early and late embryonic development stages was 0.472 ± 0.005 mm x 0.509 ± 0.008 mm and 0.489 ± 0.003 mm x 0.627 ± 0.004 mm, respectively. We studied the impact of activity space on the estrous behaviors of 11 healthy adult female and 3 adult male giant pandas with natural mating ability from the Beijing, Lanzhou, and Chengdu Zoos, and the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center during their non-mating and mating seasons from November of 1999 to May of 2003. Seasonality Of Reproduction And Embryonic Growth Of Spiny Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias L., 1758) In The Eastern Black Sea, Sefa Ayhan Demi̇rhan, Kadi̇r Seyhan

The seasonality of reproduction and embryonic development of spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) sampled from the Eastern Black Sea were studied. The gestation period of spiny dogfish, starting in August, September and October, takes around 23-24 months. Fertilized females were caught at a depth of 30-45 m in July and August. Females with full-term pups and empty uteri were found at 50-60 m depth, where the temperature was 10 °C. Lengths of pups at birth were around 28-29 cm, whereas their weights ranged from 68 to 78 g. To date, based on the studies of foreign and Turkish malacologists, 28 basommatophoran snail species belonging to 16 genera from 5 families (Physidae, Lymnaeidae, Planorbidae, Ancylidae, and Acroloxidae) have been found in freshwaters of Turkey. In Turkey, the genera Acroloxus (1 species), Galba (1), Stagnicola (1), Radix (2), Lymnaea (1), Physa (1), Physella (1), Planorbarius (1), Ferrissia (1), Planorbis (2), Anisus (4), Bathyomphalus (1), Gyraulus (8), Hippeutis (1), Ancylus (1) and Bulinus (1) are recognized. Also, 16 species (including 8 recent) and 5 subspecies are known from Quaternary fossil deposits of Turkey.

This research was carried out at 35 stations in 16 different streams on the Biga Peninsula during the spring and summer of 2000 and 2001 to determine the freshwater ichthyofauna and community features. In addition, some physical and chemical parameters of the streams were determined in their natural environment. Fourteen taxa belonging to 5 families were determined. Leuciscus cephalus, Petroleuciscus borysthenicus, Rhodeus amarus, Phoxinus phoxinus, Chalcalburnus chalcoides, Barbus tauricus escherichi, Gobio gobio, Capoeta capoeta bergamae, Vimba vimba, Cobitis fahirae and Neogobius fluviatilis are recorded for the first time from the Biga Peninsula. On Specimens Of Darevskia Armeniaca (Sauria: Lacertidae: Darevskia) Collected From Ardahan, Çeti̇n Ilgaz

Forty-seven Darevskia armeniaca specimens collected from 2 different localities in Ardahan were examined in terms of pholidosis characters, morphometric measurements and colour-pattern features. The 2 populations were differentiated from one another in terms of the number of supraciliar plates (left-right) (SCPa-SCPb), supralabial plates (left-right) (SRLa-SRLb) and transversal series of ventral plates (TVP) according to the results of the Mann-Whitney U test. An independent t-test based on morphometric measurements revealed significant differences in terms of the head index (HI) between the 2 populations. During 2001-2003, Amblyseius californicus (McGregor) was collected from the strawberry, peach, bean and pepper, where it was associated with Tetranychus urticae and Panonychus ulmi in Kuşadası, Aydın, Turkey. The descriptions and drawings of male and female A. californicus, which is a new record for the Turkish fauna, are given.

Prey Selection By African Catfish Clarias Gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) Larvae Fed Different Feeding Regimes, Erdal Yilmaz, Ahmet Bozkurt, Kaya Gökçek

Live prey selection by African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, larvae was examined under laboratory conditions. Larvae were offered plankton, plankton + trout starter (TS) and plankton + betaine supplemented trout diet (BTS) for 7 days after exogenous feeding. Five larvae were sampled to determine their gut contents and selectivity index for each treatment 15 min after the feeding. It was observed that dry diets (TS and BTS) improved the growth (P < 0.05), but did not significantly influence the prey selection of the larvae. It was determined that African catfish larvae preferred Copepods and Rotaria sp. to other zooplankton species for all feeding regimes.

A telephone survey of the Western Australian public was conducted to assess the level of success of programs implemented by the Department of Fisheries. The sample comprised of 700 interviews, 422 in the metropolitan area and 278 in regional areas throughout the State.

This community survey was used to determine the level of recall and awareness of the Department of Fisheries, the understanding and support of the community for the Department of Fisheries' management strategies and to examine key aspects of community participation in recreational fishing.

Translocation to manage overabundant wildlife populations, (in particularly Odocoileus spp.), is generally viewed as an acceptable method of wildlife removal where more aggressive methods (i.e. hunting, sharp shooting) are not considered viable options, in heavily developed urban areas and residential subdivisions.

From December 2000 to March 2003,1 conducted a large scale White-tailed Deer 0Odocoileus virginianus) translocation study on a 259 ha (640 acres) site at Duke Farms m Hillsborough, New Jersey, a location with high public visitation, over 100 employees, and a significant building infrastructure. The bioecology of the Orthoptera species living in the Setif region of Algeria was studied between 1995 and 1999. The research was conducted at 12 ecologically homogeneous sites with typical biotopes for the Orthoptera species in the region. Thirty-six Orthoptera species were recorded, of which 6 belonged to Tettigonioidea and 30 to Acridioidea. The most abundant and frequent species in the area were Ocneridia volxemi (Bolivar, 1878), Dociostaurus maroccanus (Thunberg, 1815), Tmethis laevisculus (Krauss, 1892), Calliptamus wattenwyllianus (Pantel, 1896), Praephyppigera pachygaster (Lucas, 1849), and Platycleis laticauda Brunner, 1882. This report describes Missouri River activities and results related to a channelized Missouri River creel survey conducted from 29 March through 10 October 2003. This is the fourth of a planned annual creel survey to be conducted on alternating sections of the channelized Missouri River to measure changes in recreational fishing activity, especially those changes due to large scale habitat restoration efforts. Future reports will contain additional analyses of these data. Compared to the increases that were recorded in the 1970s, annual indices to abundance of the Mid-Continent Population (MCP) of Sandhill Cranes has been relatively stable since the early 1980s. The Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska spring index for 2006, uncorrected for visibility bias, was 183,000. The photo-corrected 3-year average for 2003-05 was 422,133, which is within the established population-objective range of 349,000-472,000 cranes. All Central Flyway states, except Nebraska, allowed crane hunting in portions of their respective states during 2005-06. Most sturgeon species worldwide have been in steep decline since the 1900s. This research evaluated shovelnose sturgeon health, reproduction, and exposure to environmental contamination in the lower Platte River. Shovelnose sturgeon served as a surrogate species for the endangered pallid sturgeon and their health was assessed by incorporating measurements of general health with hepatic, immune, and reproductive system biomarkers. Environmental contaminants were measured in water, potential pallid sturgeon food items (cyprinid minnows), and shovelnose sturgeon digesta, liver, and blood plasma. A literature review on the effect of fostering or moving individual piglets from one litter to another after they are 24 to 48 hours of age was conducted. Late fostering disrupts nursing, increases fighting, and impairs the growth rate of adopted piglets and their littermates. Pig body weight at weaning was reduced 13 to 24% in extensively fostered litters vs. those where no piglets were fostered after 48 hours of age. Successful freezing, or cryopreservation, of embryos could greatly impact the pork industry, serving as a tool for conservation of valuable germplasm and enhancing biosecurity for transfer of genetic material. Pig embryos are very sensitive to cooling and few reports have shown successful developmental rates following freezing. Two experiments were conducted to determine the influence of sire line and dietary energy levels on grow-finish pig performance. In each experiment, dietary treatments were corn-soybean meal based diets with no added fat and corn-soybean meal based diets with fat added and soybean meal adjusted to maintain a similar lysine: calorie ratio. Fat additions to the added fat diets ranged from 3.75% for the 40 to 70 pound body weight period to 1.5% for pigs over 220 pounds body weight. The amount of drinking water needed daily by the pig depends on numerous influences, including temperature, diet, stage of production and health. Within a 24-hour period under thermal-neutral conditions, grow-finish and gestating swine demonstrate a peak in water usage in late afternoon while lactating females consume water more consistently throughout the day. Litter size plays a major role in the economics of pork production. Even modest increases in average litter size can have considerable effects on overall profitability. Two major components of litter size – ovulation rate and embryonic survival – have been used in a selection index project ongoing for several generations at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL). Additionally, the Chinese Meishan breed is one of the most prolific breeds, producing four to five more pigs per litter than white crossbred females.
