This study was carried out to determine the cardiac reference parameters of Karabash dogs, a breed specific to Turkey, using M-mode and 2-D echocardiography techniques. The material of the study comprised 25 male and 25 female Karabash dogs aged between 2 and 6 and weighing between 30 and 51 kg. This study was conducted to determine the effects of the solar eclipse of August 11, 1999, on the behavior of birds (chickens, Pekin ducks, gulls, crows and sparrows), cattle, bees and horses. The animals were observed for 6, from 11 am to 5 pm. Abnormal and extreme behaviors were determined at the observation times. Birds, cattle, bees and horses felt the solar eclipse about 45, 20, 65 and 35 minutes before it occurred, respectively. They showed this via their behaviors. In this study, the data consist of 305-day milk yield, calving intervals and pedigree information regarding Holstein cows raised on the Gelemen state farm and calved between 1982 and 1997. Estimates of genetic parameters and variance components of 305-day milk yield and calving intervals were obtained by restricted maximum likelihood analyses fitting an animal model. Heritabilities of milk yield and calving intervals were 0.16 ± 0.055 and 0.058 ± 0.0436, and the replications of the same traits were 0.35 ± 0.031 and 0.058 ± 0.040, respectively. This study was carried out to determine the carcass traits of geese of different origins reared in Turkey. INRA, Armutlu, Başkuyu and Tatlıcak origin geese were used; 6 females and 6 males of each origin were slaughtered at the end of the experiment. Among the origins, the differences were statistically significant for leg weight, head and abdominal fat ratio to the body (P < 0.05), neck weight, feather and gizzard fat ratio to the body (P < 0.01), hot carcass, blood, head, foot, heart, liver, gizzard, cold carcass, wing, breast and back weight, and blood, heart, liver and back ratio to the body were also significant (P < 0.001).

The objective was to compare the reproductive performances of Brown Swiss cows and heifers synchronized for estrus and ovulation using prostaglandin F 2 alpha (PGF_{2\alpha}) alone or with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Primiparous and multiparous cows (45 to 75 days postpartum; n = 26) and nulliparous heifers (16 to 20 months; n = 26) were randomly assigned to 2 treatment programs. This study was conducted from data from 3 years of research performed at the Türkgeldi State Farm in 1997-2000. A total of 1053 Türkgeldi Pro-type B_1 Tahirova x Kıvırcık sheep including mature and young individuals were used as the study material. Litter size and fecundity were 1.42 and 1.51, respectively. The averages of birth weights and weaning weights were 3.43 and 20.04 kg, respectively. The average lactation milk yield was 100.62 kg, and the lactation period was 174.90 days. The levels of milk fat, protein, dry matter, ash and casein were 7.36%, 5.28%, 18.72%, 0.98% and 4.37%, respectively.

Growth and development traits of female Brown Swiss and Holstein Friesian cattle born in the Research Farm of the Agricultural College at Atatürk University were estimated by the Richards growth model by using weight-age data obtained between 1987 and 1998. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of Box-Cox transformation on estimations of the genetic parameters for egg production traits that do not hold to the assumptions of parametric statistical analysis. Egg production of 1980 animals from 43 sires and 8 dams per sire were used. The objective of this study was to investigate ruminal fluid and whole blood oxidant-antioxidant status in normal and fauna-free small ruminants. Forty male Ramlıç lambs, a local breed in the Afyon area, with an average body weight of 32-36 kg and approximately 210 days old were used. The lambs were divided equally into 4 groups (faunated (F), defaunated (D), faunated + urea (FU) and defaunated + urea (DU)). Nutritive Value Of Pastures In Kars District I. Botanical And Nutrient Composition At Different Stages Of Maturity, İsmai̇l Kaya, Ahmet Öncüer, Yücel Ünal, Sedat Yildiz

The objectives of this study were to examine the botanical composition and determine the nutritive value of pastures in 9 different locations in Kars district with respect to stages of maturity. Samples were collected bi-weekly from 21 May to 30 July 1999. The Gramineae, Leguminoseae and other plant families constituted 64.2, 22.8 and 13.0% of the plant population, respectively. There was a variation in the nutrient composition of samples collected from different locations (P < 0.05). Average dry matter (DM) content was 28.8% and concentrations of organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), nitrogen-free extract (NFE), ether extract (EE) and ash on a DM basis were 90.8, 15.3, 30.0, 57.6, 43.4, 2.0 and 9.2%, respectively. Stage of maturity altered nutrient composition (P < 0.5). Concentrations of OM, NFE and ash did not change, CP linearly decreased, and CF and NDF quadratically increased with advancing maturity. In conclusion, the Gramineae were the predominant flora of pastures in northeastern Turkey. Moreover, mathematical models developed to characterize changes in the nutrient composition of pastures with advancing maturity may help to improve current feeding strategies.

The age composition, growth parameters, spawning season, sex ratio, length at first sexual maturity and fecundity of tub gurnard (Chelidonichthys lucerna) caught from the Bay of İskenderun in the eastern Mediterranean Sea were investigated. Females and males made up 58.2% and 41.8%, respectively, of the particular population of the species. The total length of females ranged from 8.0 cm to 30.3 cm, and of males from 8.3 cm to 21.2 cm. Karyotype analysis was performed on Alburnus heckeli (Battalgil, 1943) (Fam: Cyprinidae) by investigating the number and structures of its chromosomes. The fish used in this study were caught with fishing nets in Lake Hazer and were taken to our laboratory. Fish were injected intraperitoneally with doses of 0.01 ml/g body weight of 0.6% colchicine solution and left for 190 min before sacrificing. The purpose of the present study was to determine the distribution of cells containing glucagon (A), insulin (B), and somatostatin (D) in the goose pancreas. Small pieces of tissue from 5 adult geese (Anser anser) pancreases were dissected under deep ether anaesthesia. Sections were stained with Crossmon's connective tissue stain for general observations and Gomori's method for pancreatic islet cells. Twenty-five young budgerigars that died with the complaints of abdominal distension and crop swelling were examined pathologically. One hundred and twelve, 8-19-day-old chicks died at the same aviary with the same clinical symptoms over 16 months; the morbidity and mortality rate was 100%. Ascites, hydropericardium, crop and oesophagus ulcers, cardiomegaly, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and focal hepatic necroses were the predominant necroscopic findings. The histopathological examination revealed characteristic intranuclear inclusion bodies in the liver, kidney, spleen, lung, oesophagus, crop, brain, pancreas, heart, gut, thymus and bone marrow. : In recent years regions which exhibit many genetic polymorphisms for the DNA of cattle, sheep and goats have been discovered. The aim of this study is to analyse the polymorphism of various microsatellites, which have been previously defined as polymorphism for sheep, and to evaluate the use of the Kıvırcık sheep population, which is indigenous to Turkey in relationship testing. A 1-year-old male German Shepherd dog was brought in because its hard palate had been damaged by the left mandibular canine tooth. On inspection of the oral structure, lingual deviation to the interproximal area between the upper canine and lateral incisor of the left mandibular canine tooth and mild palatal trauma were seen. Stomach contents and feeding features of Silurus glanis living in Hirfanlı Dam Lake were investigated. Recognizable organisms were found in the stomachs of 91 Silurus glanis out of 162 caught between September 1996 and August 1997. The stomach contents of Silurus glanis and their levels were as follows: Gammarus (21.87%), Odonata (19.79%), Sander lucioperca (19.79%), Tinca tinca (18.76%), Silurus glanis (1.04%) and Gastropoda (1.04%). In addition, it was noted that 1.04% of the organisms found in the stomachs of Silurus glanis were Homoptera and 2.08% were the parasite Platyhelminthes.

A cytogenetic investigation on 12 Garra rufa (Heckel, 1843) specimens, from Müftü stream, was carried out by a slight modification of the conventional air-dried technique, using gill epithelial cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 44, comprising 22 metacentric and 20 submetacentric chromosomes and 2 acrocentric chromosome carrying satellites (NF = 85). A haploid idiogram, based on the chromosome measurements, was prepared. A detailed standard karyotype of G. rufa was established for the first time in this study.

Gyrodactylus arcuatus Bychowsky, 1933 was identified on the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus L., 1758 in the present study, which was carried out between January and May 2000. A total of 151 fish specimens were examined. The infestation prevalence and mean intensity levels were 80.2% and 35.44 ± 8.87 parasites per fish, respectively. The infestation prevalence and mean intensity levels were highest in February and May, respectively. No statistically significant preference for either sex of fish was determined. The status of populations of anchovies in Turkish terrestrial waters was preliminarily investigated using morphometric characters with the truss network system. Samples were taken from the main fishing areas of each sea, comprising the central (Sinop) and eastern (Trabzon) Black Sea, the Aegean Sea (İzmir) and the eastern Mediterranean (İskenderun). Plotting discriminant functions 1 and 2, explaining 93% of between-group variability, revealed a high degree of dissimilarity among the anchovy samples, indicating that the anchovies in each sea represent different aggregations. This study examined the pathological changes in tissues and organs with acute intoxications with amitraz and its veterinary medicinal formulation. In total 312 healthy white English mice (Mus musculus), 156 female and 156 male, were used for this purpose. The solutions were given to the mice by gavage at the following dosages: 500, 1000, 1500, 1800, 2200 or 2500 mg of technical amitraz/kg and 50, 100, 250, 500, 750 or 1000 mg of amitraz/kg in a veterinary formulation.
